Let Trump Be Trump Power Pivot: The @RealDonaldTrump Rope-a-Dope Double Punch Speech Strategy, Part II

Make that three speeches, not the two speeches we referenced in Part I, that shook the world. In this Part II we’ll discuss Trump’s rope-a-dope, now triple punch, speech strategy. We begin with a Trump hater extraordinaire who took this long to see what we saw last year when Trump announced.

Trump hater Matt Bai at Rolling Stone drunkenly stumbled into a topic we have discussed long ago and many times. We wrote long ago that Trump destroyed the old corrupt Republican Party because Obama destroyed the old Democratic Party coalition of FDR/Kennedy/Bill Clinton. Obama’s stupidity opened a path for the white working class and seniors to go to the Republican Party and provide success to Donald J. Trump in this year’s GOP primaries.

But Donald J. Trump not only destroyed the old corrupt Republican Party. Trump is building a new home for seniors and the white working class. Donald J. Trump is building a massive new tower soon to be called the New Republican Party. That’s what the triple powerful speeches have been about. The stunning news for Trump haters and the ancien régime of the GOP is that Donald J. Trump is not only bringing in seniors and the white working class. Donald J. Trump is bringing in a whole lotta love from groups long abandoned by the GOP. Donald J. Trump has Make The GOP Great Again ambitions.

Here is Trump hater Matt Bai, full of Trump fear and loathing:

A Republican Workers’ Party?

Democratic incompetence has made the previously unthinkable possible: Republicans are reimagining themselves as a labor party

A horrifying article appeared in The New York Times last week, entitled “They Want Trump to Make the G.O.P. a Workers’ Party.”

In it, conservative intellectuals say they disavow Donald Trump, but also see in his rise a reason to shift their party’s focus.

The new Republicans would no longer be the party of “business and the privileged,” but the protector of a disenfranchised working class.

This was unplanned. If it happens, it’ll be a change that takes place not because conservative leaders ever wanted it, but because voters demanded it.

Basically, large numbers of working-class voters, particularly white working-class voters, long ago abandoned the Democratic Party in favor of the Republicans. [snip]

All of this soul-searching is happening now because the maniac Trump has hijacked a portion of the Republican base and is driving it off an electoral cliff. (He will clutch his own hand all the way down in the inevitable Thelma & Louise crash ending.)

Republican propaganda for decades pushed magical-thinking concepts like “trickle-down economics” that asked lower-income voters to accept present sacrifices for theoretical bigger payoffs down the road.

Until this year, Republican voters mostly bought it. But Trump was their way of telling their leaders they’re done waiting. They want their piece of the pie now, even if it means unleashing the Trumpinator to get it.

People have been conscious of the defection of working-class voters to the Republican Party for years, but this has always been dismissed as the consequence of skillfull propaganda. It’s the What’s the Matter With Kansas? creation story, i.e., that the white working class has been hoodwinked into going against its own economic interests thanks to cynical/backward appeals to race, religion and culture.

But that isn’t the whole story, as some leading Democrats are beginning to realize. Joe Biden went on Morning Joe a few weeks ago and admitted that “the Democratic Party over all hasn’t spoken enough to [working-class voters],” the “ordinary people busting their necks.” [snip]

The problem with all of this is that the Democrats went so far in the direction of advocacy for the global religion that they made something as idiotic as the rise of unabashed nativist Donald Trump possible.

Worse, Trump’s rise will give the Globalist Faith Militant an automatic argument for more time. They will decry any criticism of free trade or globalization as racist Trumpism, and Trump is such a galactic jackass that this will work, his vast inventory of offensive bleatings discrediting even the legitimate economic concerns of his voters.

But expecting American politicians to advocate first and foremost for their own constituents isn’t isolationism. It’s just rational self-interest, which neoliberals only seem to disbelieve in when it pertains to labor. Moreover we didn’t call movements to disinvest from South Africa or the Soviet Union “nativism.” We called that idealism.

Matt Bai is so stupid, so full of hate, he can’t see past his anti-Trump jingoism. If Matt Bai had an ounce of intellectual honesty he would praise Trump for telling the truth and fighting for the working class. But the left is so corrupt we cannot expect anything like honesty from their precincts.

As we wrote long ago, Donald J. Trump destroyed the Republican Party. Now Donald J. Trump builds the new GOP:

Consider, both major political parties for their own selfish reasons, seek to impose illegal immigration amnesty, common core, disaster trade policies such as TPP. Both parties are in cahoots on these issues. Donald J. Trump is against illegal immigration amnesty, common core, disaster trade policies.

The GOP establishment wants to sell the notion that the problem with Donald J. Trump is one of “tone” and bombastic “personality”. But the GOP establishment’s problem with Donald J. Trump is one of policy. That’s why there can be no peace. One must die for the other to live.

Donald J. Trump is against what both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party want to impose on this nation. Recall that many of the abominations of the Obama gangster government were birthed by Republicans. TARP, Common Core, bailouts, trade deals – were authored by George W. Bush and then co-authored by Barack Obama. ObamaCare? It used to be called RomneyCare.

Donald J. Trump is against what both the Democratic Party of Barack Obama and the Republican Party of George W. Bush have imposed on American citizens. The American people are against what the Democratic Party of Barack Obama and the Republican Party of George W. Bush have wrought. That’s why there is a New Republican Party rising.

Donald J. Trump, aided and abetted by the voters, will bring about a realignment – a New Republican Party.

The last three Donald J. Trump speeches are the building blocks of the New Republican Party. The first speech was a tough discussion on terrorism. The second speech is the one we focused on in Part I. This second speech was a direct appeal to black voters (and a clever way to appeal to white suburban voters who don’t want to be perceived as “racist”) and an attack on lobbyists and the “rigged system”. At the end of the second speech Trump summed it all up – an appeal to blacks and the poor and an attack on the rigged system that benefits the powerful political establishment:

Let’s talk about what this means for the inner cities of America. It’s time to break through the television noise, the entrenched interests. I understand that a lot of powerful people in our political system – a lot of people who’ve created our problems – will lose a lot of their contracts, and their special gigs, if African-American voters, and all minority voters, support my campaign.

It’s time to stop making the special interests rich. It’s time to make the American people rich.

I am going to Make America Wealthy Again.

The Democratic Party has run nearly every inner city in this country for 50 years, and run them into financial ruin.

They’ve ruined the schools.

They’ve driven out the jobs.

They’ve tolerated a level of crime no American should consider acceptable.

Violent crime has risen 17% in America’s 50 largest cities last year. Killings of police officers this year is up nearly 50 percent. Homicides are up more than 60% in Baltimore. They are up more than 50% in Washington, D.C.

This is the future offered by Hillary Clinton. More poverty, more crime, and more of the same. The future she offers is the most pessimistic thing I can possibly imagine.

It is time for a different future.

Here is what I am proposing.

First, on immigration. No community in this country has been hurt worse by Hillary Clinton’s immigration policies than the African-American community. Now she is proposing to print instant work permits for millions of illegal immigrants, taking jobs directly from low-income Americans. [snip]

On trade, I am going to renegotiate NAFTA, stand up to China, withdraw from the TPP, and protect every last American job.

On taxes, I am going to give a massive tax cut to every worker and small business in this country, bring thousands of new companies and millions of new jobs onto our shores – and make it very difficult for our businesses to leave.

I am going to reform our regulations so jobs stay in America, and new businesses come to America to hire workers right here in Milwaukee. Every policy my opponent has sends jobs overseas. I am going to bring trillions in new wealth back to the United States.

On education, it is time to have school choice, merit pay for teachers, and to end the tenure policies that hurt good teachers and reward bad teachers. We are going to put students and parents first.

Hillary Clinton would rather deny opportunities to millions of young African-American children, just so she can curry favor with the education bureaucracy.

I am going to allow charter schools to thrive, and help young kids get on the American ladder of success: a good education, and a good-paying job.

On crime, I am going to support more police in our communities, appoint the best prosecutors and judges in the country, pursue strong enforcement of federal laws, and I am going to break up the gangs, the cartels and criminal syndicates terrorizing our neighborhoods. To every lawbreaker hurting innocent people in this country, I say: your free reign will soon come crashing to an end.

On healthcare, we are going to get rid of Obamacare – which has caused soaring double-digit premium increases – and give choice to patients and consumers. Aetna, just today, announced they are dropping out – as are many of the major insurance companies.

On government corruption, I am going to restore honor to our government. We’ve seen the corruption of Hillary Clinton, the mass email deletions, the pay-for-play at the State Department, the profiteering, the favors given to foreign corporations and governments at your expense. We’ve seen a former Secretary of State lie to Congress about her illegal email scheme, risk innocent American lives, and bring dishonor onto our government.

In my Administration, I am going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. No one will be above the law.

I am going to forbid senior officials from trading favors for cash by preventing them from collecting lavish speaking fees through their spouses when they serve.

I am going to ask my senior officials to sign an agreement not to accept speaking fees from corporations with a registered lobbyist for five years after leaving office, or from any entity tied to a foreign government. This is all just the beginning.

We are going to make this a government of the people once again. This is our chance to take back power from all the people who’ve taken it from you. The reason you see the establishment media lining up behind my opponent is because they are scared that you, with your vote, can take away their power and return it to your family and community.

These are tough times. But I know we can make American Greater Than Ever Before.

To do this, we are going to need a fighter in the White House.

I will be your fighter. [snip]

The only individuals she’s ever delivered for is her donors – not the people.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. My opponent asks her supporters to repeat a three-word pledge. Her pledge reads: “I’m With Her”

I choose to recite a different pledge. My pledge reads: “I’m With You – the American people.”

I will fight to ensure that every American is treated equally, protected equally, and honored equally. We will reject bigotry and hatred and oppression in all of its forms, and seek a new future of security, prosperity and opportunity – a future built on our common culture and values as one American people.

I am asking for your vote so I can be your champion in the White House. We will once again be a country of law and order, and a country of great success.

To every parent who dreams for their children, and to every child who dreams for their future, I say these words to you tonight: I’m with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you.

Together, We Will Make America Strong Again.

We Will Make American Safe Again.

And We Will Make America Great Again.

That’s a New Republican Party speech not an old GOP speech. The third Trump speech is of a like manner. An outstanding line from the third speech is Trump taking on both parties and allocating a share of the blame to the Republican Party. The entire speech is a summation of the two earlier speeches:

On Monday, I laid out my plan to defeat Radical Islamic Terrorism.

On Tuesday, in Wisconsin, I talked about how we are going to restore law and order to this country. [snip]

I speak the truth for all of you, and for everyone in this country who doesn’t have a voice.

I speak the truth on behalf of the factory worker who lost his or her job.

I speak the truth on behalf of the Veteran who has been denied the medical care they need – and so many are not making it. They are dying.

I speak the truth on behalf of the family living near the border that deserves to be safe in their own country but is instead living with no security at all.

Our campaign is about representing the great majority of Americans – Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Conservatives and Liberals – who read the newspaper, or turn on the TV, and don’t hear anyone speaking for them. All they hear are insiders fighting for insiders.

These are the forgotten men and women in our society, and they are angry at so much on so many levels. The poverty, the unemployment, the failing schools, the jobs moving to other countries.

I am fighting for these forgotten Americans.

Trump also addressed the world he comes from which helps to explain the departure of Paul Manafort and Corey Lewandowski as well as the new team Trump has assembled. A builder like Trump understands that you hire the crane operator only for as long as she is needed, once the job is done, the project moves forward. Manafort’s job was to appease the Republican establishment during the Republican convention and to make sure Trump secured the delegates for the convention. Manafort did his job. Now a new team was needed.

In the world of Trump you do your job. The mission comes first. The excavator arrives to dig the earth so the foundation can be laid and once that job is done the excavators leave. The iron workers arrive to build the skeletal frame then the iron workers leave. The bricklayers arrive to their job followed by the contractors who border rooms with their plasterboard, followed by the carpenters, painters, floor installers, electricians, and eventually the tenants.

Trump comes from a world of easy to see achievements:

In the world I come from, if something is broken, you fix it.

If something isn’t working, you replace it.

If a product doesn’t deliver, you make a change.

I have no patience for injustice, no tolerance for government incompetence, no sympathy for leaders who fail their citizens.

That’s why I am running: to end the decades of bitter failure and to offer the American people a new future of honesty, justice and opportunity. A future where America, and its people, always – and I mean always – come first.

Aren’t you tired of a system that gets rich at your expense?

Aren’t you tired of the same old lies and the same old broken promises? And Hillary Clinton has proven to be one of the greatest liars of all time.

Aren’t you tired of arrogant leaders who look down on you, instead of serving and protecting you?

That is all about to change – and it’s about to change soon. We are going to put the American people first again. [snip]

Instead, every story is told from the perspective of the insiders. It’s the narrative of the people who rigged the system, never the voice of the people it’s been rigged against.

So many people suffering in silence. No cameras, no coverage, no outrage from a media class that seems to get outraged over just about everything else.

So again, it’s not about me. It’s never been about me. It’s about all the people in this country who don’t have a voice.

I am running to be their voice.

I am running to be the voice for every forgotten part of this country that has been waiting and hoping for a better future.

I am glad that I make the powerful a little uncomfortable now and again – INCLUDING SOME POWERFUL PEOPLE IN MY OWN PARTY. Because it means I am fighting for real change.

There’s a reason the hedge fund managers, the financial lobbyists, the Wall Street investors, are throwing their money at Hillary Clinton. Because they know she will make sure the system stays rigged in their favor.

It’s the powerful protecting the powerful.

The insiders fighting for the insiders.

I am fighting for you.

Them’s fighting words. Trump is birthing a New Republican Party with appeals to all the disaffected.

Perhaps that is why Trump is rising in the polls nationally and in Pennsylvania.

One last point, the rope-a-dope. While Hillary has disappeared more or less from the campaign trail, on most days Donald Trump is active every day. Trump and Hillary both knew that the stupid Olympic games (can’t we rid ourselves of this silliness or relegate the games to every ten years?) would suck up the news cycle. Hillary effectively disappeared during this period. Trump’s strategy has been to soak up attention with campaign appearances in state after state knowing he could break on local television through the sports fog.

But Donald J. Trump’s most audacious rope-a-dope strategy, the most nerve racking strategy, has been to rely on free attention from Big Media and not spend cash this summer season. Hillary2016 by contrast has spent money hand over fist which has led to higher poll ratings. The results are classic Muhammad Ali rope-a-dope:

Trump’s campaign spending at half the rate of Clinton’s

Donald Trump doubled his campaign expenses last month yet was still spending at a far slower clip than Hillary Clinton.

New finance documents show the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign spent about $18.5 million in July. By comparison, the Democratic presidential nominee spent about $38 million.

Boxer Muhammad Ali had a boxing strategy. Knowing his opponent’s strength and fully aware of that power, Ali went to the ropes surrounding the boxing ring. There, Ali took blow after blow, brutal punch after brutal punch. Ali only jabbing back sufficiently to convince the referee that he was still able to fight so the ref would not end the fight. Ali, in his “protective stance” against the ropes encouraged the beating delivered by his opponent, who now sells hamburger grills. Ali, took to the ropes to rope himself a dope. “The plan is to cause the opponent to punch himself out and make mistakes which the boxer can then exploit in a counter-attack.” Compare Ali, to Trump:

At the time some observers thought that Ali was being horribly beaten and worried that they might see him get killed in the ring. [snip] However, far from being brutalized, Ali was relatively protected from Foreman’s blows. Norman Mailer described the advantage of Ali’s rope-a-dope this way: “Standing on one’s feet, it is painful to absorb a heavy body punch even when blocked with one’s arm. The torso, the legs and the spine take the shock. Leaning on the ropes, however, Ali can pass it along; the rope will receive the strain.”[2] Ali’s preparation for the fight, which involved toughening himself up by allowing his sparring partners to pummel him, contributed to observers’ sense that Ali was outmatched. But when Foreman became tired from the beating he was delivering, Ali took advantage and won the match.

The dumb observers were wrong. Like Ali, Donald J. Trump has been considered out for the count. But like Ali, Trump comes out punching at a time of his choosing, in accord with his strategy. The time to punch forward starts this week, just before Labor Day as attention to political campaigns increases, as the Olympic tomfoolery ends.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
