‘NObama’ Say Hillary Clinton Voters

Scott Conroy reports that Mitt Romney sees opportunity and a chance to win in Pennsylvania. A Republican winning Pennsylvania is supposed to be “unpossible” according to the Ralph Wiggums’ of Big Media. But maybe not.

The “maybe not” might be due to Hillary Clinton voters. Why Hillary Clinton voters?:

“For a striking number of Democrats, May 31, 2008, is a day that lives in infamy. It marked the moment that the national party’s rules committee dealt a deathblow to Hillary Clinton’s bid to win the presidential nomination over Barack Obama.

The committee, weighted with Obama loyalists, issued a unanimous decision amid whispered back-door deals.

The date “will not be forgotten,” according to Gayle Allegro, a Democrat from Pine Island, Fla. – which is why Allegro was frosted by last week’s announcement that Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker at the Democrats’ national convention next month.

If Obama and his crew think that having Bill Clinton give a speech is going to sway all the Democrats that left the party in 2010 or just slipped into the shadows, they are mistaken,” she said.

Do they really think we are that stupid, that we don’t see what is going on?

Gayle Allegro is not alone. There are many like her in Florida and in Pennsylvania. Big Media calls us the “bitter” and the “clinging” but usually forgets to add “determined”. And that determination is a Gayle force wind spitting in the face of Barack Obama’s reelection chances:

“Allegro, 60, is one of those women who break glass ceilings. She has lived in Europe, North Africa and Israel, and she was one of the first women to work as a laborer on the Alaska oil pipeline while earning a master’s degree in economic geology.

In 2008, most Democrats sucked up their sense of personal loss regarding Hillary and voted for Obama because the idea of handing Republicans another four years in the White House was just too awful to bear, said Lara Brown, an electoral-college expert at Villanova University.

Nevertheless, they had reservations about Obama’s leadership skills and experience,” Brown said.

By 2010, that allegiance waned and Clinton Democrats were the deciding factor that removed Democrats from power in the U.S. House, closed the margin in the U.S. Senate, and flipped state legislatures and governor’s mansions to Republicans across the country.

Republicans/conservatives who don’t understand that anger, that determined motivated anger and resolve are missing an important opportunity. Mitt Romney appears to understand he has a strong chance of winning over Hillary Clinton voters and does not miss a chance to praise certain aspects of the Bill Clinton presidency, Hillary Clinton’s work ethic, and the fact that Barack Obama is no Bill Clinton. It’s a smart move by Mitt Romney:

“Now, on the threshold of the 2012 election, many are still angry with their party – anger that mirrors how conservatives felt in the 2006 Bush midterm election and the 2008 general election. It is anger enough to not vote, or to vote for the opposing team.

To understand why, you must understand their roots.”

Hillary Clinton voters came from all wings of the party. Some of us were liberals in every way. Some of us were moderates, some conservative. Some of us were a mish-mash of political ideologies – social liberals/fiscal conservatives. But one thing we all admired was hard work and toughness when the going got tough.

We didn’t always have to agree with what Hillary Clinton (or Bill) said. We sometimes cringed at things they did. But we liked that Hillary Clinton was able to ‘seek common ground yet hold her ground on principles’. We also admired her philosophy of ‘it doesn’t matter where you are planted, you should blossom.’

There was also that bit about “experience”. When we saw a hard worker with experience shoved aside for a slim customer from Chicago we had to shake our heads in disbelief. Then we saw the full ugliness of the party “leadership” working behind the scenes to get rid not only of Hillary Clinton but also her senior voters and white working class supporters in favor of some abomination coalition which they called “the coalition of the ascendant”.

That reworked monstrosity which is now the Obama Dimocratic Party got its comeuppance in 2010 when senior voters and white working class voters voted NObama. We voted NObama not only to get rid of Barack Obama and defend the country but also to give a whipping to the “nutroots” which in their audacity came to call themselves the “creative class”.

The nutroots creative class DailyKooks creeps fancied themselves as hyper intelligent “high information” voters. They did not care about the country. The nutroots pretended to care about the country. They certainly caterwauled enough. But to quote Edmund Burke, “it is a general popular error to suppose the loudest complainers for the public to be the most anxious for its welfare.”

Somehow it never entered their atrophied minds that for them to truly “win” they would require someone with the experience and toughness to succeed. Hillary Clinton voters never took these clowns seriously because, seriously, how could a serious political party attach itself to such a nonentity?

We thought the Democratic Party cared about not only winning one singular election but also about governing – successfully. We thought the idea of a political party was to win election after election after governing sucessfully term after term. We did not realize that the “creative class” vanguard of the proletariat only cared about seizing power then putting the most crackpot ideas that Americans hated into practice. Girl, were we wrong:

“They didn’t plan on Howard Dean supporters (including the “Netroots” and ideological progressives) believing that Kerry lost because he wasn’t liberal enough.

They also didn’t plan on this faction starting a revolution in the party.

With Dean in charge of the Democratic National Committee, progressives worked to convince rank-and-file Democrats that victory required pursuing a 50-state strategy and dismissing people in “fly-over” states as not knowing what was good for them.

They believed that government led by coastal (elitist) Democrats would be a force for good for those people; they would educate them on environmental issues and help the “guns- and God-clinging” crowd to vote on economic self-interest, not on cultural issues.

Moderates always have been skeptical of such arguments, Brown said. “They believed in trying to bridge cultural differences between the coastal and the interior Democrats.”

Angry Clinton Democrats not only lost the 2008 nomination, but Obama did not become the president they had expected based on his 2004 convention speech. They felt their party betrayed them by installing the progressive wing and kicking out the centrists.

These voters, sometimes called Reagan Democrats, hold traditional values. Based on job (blue-collar), religion (Catholic), location (rural) or region (Appalachia and Midwest), they prefer moderate government regulation of the economy.

In 2008, they supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries. They also gave Obama, the most liberal U.S. senator, the benefit of the doubt and chose him over Republican John McCain.”

That’s a somewhat logical progression for the “moderates” that voted for Hillary Clinton. The liberals and the conservatives that voted for Hillary had their own issues with Obama. It all added up to: NObama:

“Today, Floridian Gayle Allegro has no more benefit-of-doubt to give Obama.

Nor does Jo Ann Nardelli, the Democrats’ former vice-chairman in Pennsylvania … or Richard Furillo and his son, Matthew, two Youngstown Democrats.

Theirs are the voices that usually remain unheard, the views that typically are not considered, in much national political analysis.

Yet they all insist that they are not alone.”

Hey guys, you are not alone. Those of us who used to fundraise for the Democratic Party now raise something else. Campaign work? No way. We saw through the Barack Obama creative class lies from the beginning. And we know, It’s not getting better:



Hillary Clinton voters also did not like the race-baiting from Barack Obama. His campaign was always a fairy tale. Obama claimed nonsense about no ‘red America, no blue America” when any sentient observer could see that the divisions were real and remain real. The Barack Obama tactic was to try to silence opposition with a veiled and not so veiled race war. John Ellis explains the 2012 Obama strategy:

“President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has spent more than $100 million on advertising over the last 3 months. Much, if not most, of it has been produced to shred Mitt Romney’s reputation and suppress turnout among white voters who might vote for Romney. The outlook for August is more of the same. The outlook for September and October is probably a lot more of the same.

The 2012 president election, boiled down to its remaining variables, is about two things: (1) white voters who voted for Barrack Obama last time and have since grown disillusioned and, (2) white voters who stayed home in 2008 rather than vote for John McCain but may vote this time. The Obama campaign’s goal is to make both groups stay home rather than vote. It’s not a “negative campaign” they’re running. It’s purposefully toxic. [snip]

Obama captured 43% of the white vote, the highest percentage of white votes garnered by a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon Johnson (President Clinton also received 43% of the white vote in his 1996 re-election campaign).

Fast forward to 2012. Black turnout indicators are down, substantially. Hispanic turnout indicators are down, substantially. The youth vote, as a percentage of the total vote, is expected to revert to form. White voters are now expected to comprise 75% of the total electorate.

If President Obama gets 40% of the white vote, he has a chance to win re-election. If President Obama gets 35% of the white vote, he’s finished.

Right now, depending on which poll you look at, President Obama is running somewhere north of 35% and south of 40% among white voters. The danger for Team Obama is that there will come a moment – “anything is better than this” – that will cause the bottom to fall out of the president’s support among white voters. If that happens, he will fall into Mondale country (35%) and lose in a landslide.

So the purpose of the president’s campaign is to make sure, if such a thing can be made sure, that that doesn’t happen. Thus the chemical warfare campaign, the war to end all wars.”

We’ve written about Mitt Romney’s VP strategy based on a Great Lakes or great landslide decision. That decision is coming soon. For Barack Obama the need is to suppress the white vote. Whatever it takes.

Whatever it takes will not include an overwhelming cash advantage. Team Obama raises $75 million in July is big news today but the Obama campaign has not seen fit to declare now much cash on hand it has. But more cash will not solve the basic problem Barack Obama faces.

White working class voters have already bailed on Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton voters here are lost to Barack Obama. Some, many, Hillary Clinton voters are up for grabs and Mitt Romney is likely to continue his thus far subtle courtship of all groups of potential supporters.

That courtship is about to begin the flowers and chocolate (dare we ask for champagne?) stage after August 31. Prepare for a lot of flowers and a lot of chocolate if this report is accurate: Romney/RNC raise $101.3 million in July:

“Team Obama was already more than $20 million down on cash-on-hand after June’s numbers, and with their burn rate, even a showing of fund-raising parity in July would probably put them further behind the eight-ball.”

“Further behind the eight-ball” is a polite way of putting it. Even the New York Times noticed Obama’s shrinking coffers. If this keeps up it’s not only his coffers that will continue to shrink. Don’t expect Hillary Clinton voters to come to the rescue.

    In addition, offended by unsubstantiated attacks by Reid and Cutter labeling Romney a felon, etc…the party is playing too dirty and you want nothing to do with it…this is not the democratic party you want to belong to…this is not what we used to stand for…

    But instead of flying all the way to Southern California, the president is making a shorter trip Monday evening to the $15 million beachfront Connecticut estate of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein for a $35,800-per-person fundraiser that’s expected to include screenwriter and producer Aaron Sorkin and actor Anne Hathaway, star of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” Mr. Obama also will hold a larger campaign event for about 500 people at a hotel in Stamford, Conn., where tickets start at $500 each.

    The quick trip should raise about $2.5 million for the president’s reelection fund and for other Democratic Party campaign war chests.

    Mr. Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, raised more money with the national party committee than Mr. Obama and the Democratic National Committee in July, $101.3 million to $75 million. It was the third consecutive month that Mr. Romney and the Republican National Committee out-raised the Obama campaign and the DNC.

    The Republican has been winning the money race in Connecticut, too, although Mr. Obama is well ahead in the polls there. Mr. Romney has raised more than $4.8 million from Connecticut residents, compared with $2.9 million for Mr. Obama, according to Federal Election Commission records. In a Quinnipiac University poll in June, the president led Mr. Romney in Connecticut by 12 points, 50 percent to 38 percent.

    Mr. Weinstein is a longtime supporter of Democratic candidates, including Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary against Mr. Obams. He was a guest at the White House in March for a state dinner honoring British Prime Minister David Cameron. Mr. Weinstein’s wife, fashion designer Georgina Chapman, is British.

    Mr. Obama’s cozy relations with Hollywood have even included the president pitching a movie to Mr. Weinstein earlier this year. The president sent Mr. Weinstein a spy novel he’d read and suggested that Mr. Weinstein make a movie about it. The film producer said Mr. Obama was “the most overqualified book scout I’ve ever had.”

    The couple’s Westport home has about 8,900 square feet and 8½ bathrooms.

    The president is leaning heavily on Hollywood and other celebrities for campaign donations this year. In May, shortly after Mr. Obama came out in favor of same-sex marriage, he raised about $15 million at the Los Angeles home of actor George Clooney. In June, he held a high-end fundraiser at the New York City home of “Sex and the City” actress Sarah Jessica Parker, co-hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour. And actor Morgan Freeman has donated $1 million to the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA.

    After his glitzy fundraiser on Monday, Mr. Obama will take a two-day campaign trip to Colorado later this week to promote his plans to help the middle class.

    “The charge is not that Mitt Romney paid less than a factory worker, or whatever, but it’s a bit more vicious than that from Harry Reid. He said he has an anonymous source telling him that [Romney] paid no taxes for something like 10 years. So the president has talked a lot about change in the tone of this town. Why hasn’t he picked up the phone to ask Harry Reid to stop making a charge like that?” FOX News White House correspondent Ed Henry asked WH press secretary Jay Carney at today’s briefing.

    “I think the idea that people tell Harry Reid what to do is inconsistent with what everyone here understands to be [the case],” Carney responded.

    Carney then referred to several campaign attacks on Romney such as paying a lower effective tax rate and outsourcing jobs.

    “That’s not the charge,” Henry corrected Carney. “The charge is that he didn’t pay taxes for ten years. Does the White House believe that allegation?”

    “Yeah, I would refer you to Senator Reid. I can’t — only Senator Reid knows his source, which he has discussed. And I would refer you to that,” Carney responded.

    “Somebody told him it was true. Somebody told him that it was a fact. Do you agree with that rationale?” Henry pressed Carney.

    “I haven’t seen that statement,” Carney claimed. “Again, I would refer you to Nancy Pelosi.”

    “Harry Reid says he hasn’t paid taxes in 10 years and that’s just a fact?” Henry asked.

    “I think the President is focused on — and you hear him say this every day — issues that matter to the American people,” Carney said, suggesting that Reid’s accusation is not an issue that matters.

    At this point, ABC’s Jon Karl jumps in to try to pry something out of Carney.

    “One more on Harry Reid. It’s a simple question. Does the president think that this allegation coming from Harry Reid, without any evidence, made on the Senate floor, is that below the belt? Does that cross the line?” Karl asked.

    Carney responded by saying that President Obama believes in full disclosure of tax documents when you are running for the presidency.

    “The issue here is one of transparency and, again, as the president sees it, in regards to his candidacy, one, it is an important tradition. It allows the American people to get a sense of the candidate’s background,” Carney said to the press.

    “You can talk to Senator Reid. I’m sure he’ll address this issue if you ask him. He certainly speaks for himself. The president is focused on the issues that matter most to the American people,” Carney said.

    Reid is where he loves to be: the center of controversy. He has accused Mitt Romney of paying no taxes for 10 years. Romney denies the accusation and challenged Reid to put up or shut up. In an apparent response, Reid repeated the charges on the Senate floor. Countless aides have echoed their boss. They and he attribute their information to a source they will not name.

    Whether such a source exists, really, is beside the point. It could be that someone did indeed tell Reid that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. Journalists get that sort of tip all the time, and their responsibility is (1) to check it out and (2) identify the source. Reid has not done the latter and apparently has not done the former, either. The truth is that Reid doesn’t really care if the charge is true or not. He would prefer the former, but he’ll settle for the latter.

    For Reid, this is yet another brazen and tasteless partisan attack. As majority leader, he has managed to sink the public image of the Senate even lower than it would otherwise be. He contributes to bad feelings, gridlock and the sense — nay, the reality — that everything is done for political advantage. Reid is a crass man, the very personification of the gaudy and kitschy Las Vegas Strip.

    Still, he is not some backbencher, but the Senate majority leader. He is the face of the Democratic Party in the Senate and the ally of President Obama. Yet, not a single Democrat has had the spine to rebuke Reid. The White House has been given the chance and explicitly ducked its duty. Other members of the Senate have run for cover. They fear Reid and, if truth be told, sort of like what he’s doing — constantly needling Romney, keeping him on the defensive about taxes and his insistence on releasing only two years of his returns.

    The politics of this squabble are delightful. But Reid has managed to draw both his party and his president into the gutter with him. When Reid accuses the Republicans of being overly partisan, he now lacks all credibility. For a long time it’s been difficult to believe anything he says. Now, it’s impossible.

    As for Obama, he is tarnished by this episode. The fresh new face that promised us all a different kind of politics is suddenly looking cheesy. The soaring rhetoric that Obama used in his first campaign has come to ground in the mud of Harry Reid’s latter-day McCarthyism.

    White House: Obama Supports Renewing Assault Weapons Ban — But Congress Won’t Act

    President Obama supports reinstating the assault weapons ban, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Monday, on the heels of back-to-back shooting rampages in the United States.

    As a presidential candidate, Obama supported renewal of the 1994-2004 federal ban on manufacturing semi-automatic weapons for civilian use. But he hasn’t pushed for it as president, largely steering clear of the issue.

    “He does support renewing the assault weapons ban,” Carney said at his press briefing, one day after a shooter killed six people at a Sikh gurdwara in Wisconsin. In response to several questions, he added that “there has been reluctance by Congress to pass that renewal.”

    The top Obama spokesman reiterated several times that the administration intends to push for gun safety “under existing law” and “not infringe upon Second Amendment rights of citizens.” Evoking Obama’s recent speech in New Orleans, he said the president wants to improve background checks and enforce laws to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of criminals.

    The issue of gun control is increasingly toxic in Washington as Democrats, traditionally the standard bearers of the cause, are now at pains to go head-to-head with the powerful National Rifle Association. High-profile shootings — including the Tucson massacre that critically wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and last month’s Colorado rampage at a movie theater — have done little to change the dynamic.

    The semi-automatic weapons used to carry out the Colorado and Wisconsin shootings were reportedly purchased legally by the alleged shooters.

    Carney called gun safety “a broader problem that needs to be addressed from a variety of fronts.”

    The inquiry into potential money-laundering involves two high-rolling gamblers.

    WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is investigating whether Las Vegas Sands Corp., owned by high-profile Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, broke federal law by failing to report millions of dollars of potentially laundered money transferred to its casinos by two high-rolling Las Vegas gamblers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

    The U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles is investigating deposits made in the mid-2000s by a Mexican pharmaceutical businessman, later indicted for drug trafficking in 2007, and a California executive with Fry’s Electronics, who later pleaded guilty to taking illegal kickbacks, the newspaper said, citing lawyers and federal officials working on the case.

    The Journal said there were no indications that the investigation included actions by Adelson, Sands’ chief executive and a major political donor for the Republican Party. Adelson has pledged to spend as much as $100 million to help Republican candidates in this election cycle.

    Federal investigators have begun focusing on casinos amid concerns that the industry’s lax financial systems could be used for money laundering and other illegal activities, according to Justice Department officials cited by the Journal.

    Sands Corp. did not immediately return calls from the Associated Press on Sunday. A company spokesman, Ron Reese, told the Journal that the company believes “it has acted properly and has not committed any wrongdoing.”

    Chinese-born Mexican businessman Zhenli Ye Gon transferred about $85 million to casinos owned by Sands in the middle of the last decade. He lost more than $125 million at Vegas casinos, according to an affidavit cited by the Journal.

    Federal prosecutors say Ye Gon’s use of Mexican exchange houses should have been a warning sign of suspicious activity to Sands employees. In July 2007, Ye Gon was indicted in the U.S. on charges of trafficking the illegal stimulant methamphetamine. The drug charges were dismissed in 2009, but Ye Gon is scheduled to be extradited to Mexico to face additional trafficking and laundering charges there.

    The Justice Department is also investigating more than $100 million in money transfers by another Las Vegas high roller, Ausaf Umar Siddiqui, who was previously a vice president at Fry’s Electronics. Siddiqui was arrested in 2009 for accepting illegal kickbacks. He pleaded guilty to the charges and is serving a six-year prison sentence.

    Our ruling

    Reid has said Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. It was no slip of the tongue. He repeated the claim on at least two more occasions, at one point saying that “the word is out” when in fact it was only Reid who put that “word” out.

    Reid has produced no evidence to back up his claim other than attribution to a shadowy anonymous source. Romney has denied the claim, and tax experts back him up, saying that the nature of Romney’s investments in Bain make it highly unlikely he would have been able to avoid paying taxes altogether — especially for 10 years.

    Reid has made an extreme claim with nothing solid to back it up. Pants on Fire!

    The New York-based Sikh Coalition has reported more than 700 hate crimes in the U.S. since 9/11 and has fielded complaints in the thousands from Sikhs about workplace discrimination and racial profiling.

    The media is trying to create a sense of momentum and of inevitability about the Obama candidacy. One benighted Newsweek reporter even speculated about a possible Democratic landslide.

    On Friday, I saw the real numbers. These state-by-state polls, taken by an organization I trust (after forty years of polling) show the real story. The tally is based on more than 600 likely voter interviews in each swing state within the past eight days.

    The trend line is distinctly pro-Romney. Of the thirteen states studied, he improved or Obama slipped in nine states while the reverse happened in only four. To read the media, one would think that Romney had a terrible month. In fact, the exact reverse is true.

    Romney is currently leading in every state McCain carried plus: Indiana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina, and Colorado. If he carries these states, he’ll have 228 electoral votes of the 270 he needs to win.

    To win the election, Romney would then have to carry Florida where he trails by two points, and either Virginia (behind by two) or Ohio where he’s down by only one.

    If he carries all three of these states and also wins all the others where Obama is now at 50% or less – Iowa, New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey — he will get 351 electoral votes, a landslide about equal to Obama’s 363 vote tally in 2008.

    The strong probability is that Romney does, in fact, carry Florida, Ohio, and Virginia and a share of the other states where Obama is below 50% of the vote.

    So don’t believe the garbage being put out by the media. The attempt to portray Romney as not catching on and as dropping in the polls is ludicrous. It is, at best, the product of incompetent polling and, at worst, the result of deliberate media bias. But Romney is winning and expanding his lead each week. That’s the real story.

    Why are the college records, of a 51-year-old President of the United States, so important to keep secret? I think I know the answer.

    If anyone should have questions about Obama’s record at Columbia University, it’s me. We both graduated (according to Obama) Columbia University, Class of ’83. We were both (according to Obama) Pre-Law and Political Science majors. And I thought I knew most everyone at Columbia. I certainly thought I’d heard of all of my fellow Political Science majors. But not Obama (or as he was known then- Barry Soetoro). I never met him. Never saw him. Never even heard of him. And none of the classmates that I knew at Columbia has ever met him, saw him, or heard of him.

    But don’t take my word for it. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2008 that Fox News randomly called 400 of our Columbia classmates and never found one who had ever met Obama.

    Now all of this mystery could be easily and instantly dismissed if Obama released his Columbia transcripts to the media. But even after serving as President for 3 1/2 years he refuses to unseal his college records. Shouldn’t the media be as relentless in pursuit of Obama’s records as Romney’s? Shouldn’t they be digging into Obama’s past–beyond what he has written about himself–with the same boundless enthusiasm as Mitt’s?

    The first question I’d ask is, if you had great grades, why would you seal your records? So let’s assume Obama got poor grades. Why not release the records? He’s President of the free world, for gosh sakes. He’s commander-in-chief of the U.S. military. Who’d care about some poor grades from three decades ago, right? So then what’s the problem? Doesn’t that make the media suspicious? Something doesn’t add up.

    Secondly, if he had poor grades at Occidental, how did he get admitted to an Ivy League university in the first place? And if his grades at Columbia were awful, how’d he ever get into Harvard Law School? So again those grades must have been great, right? So why spend millions to keep them sealed?

    Third, how did Obama pay for all these fancy schools without coming from a wealthy background? If he had student loans or scholarships, would he not have to maintain good grades?

    I can only think of one answer that would explain this mystery.

    Here’s my gut belief: Obama got a leg up by being admitted to both Occidental and Columbia as a foreign exchange student. He was raised as a young boy in Indonesia. But did his mother ever change him back to a U.S. citizen? When he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii or as he neared college-age preparing to apply to schools, did he ever change his citizenship back? I’m betting not.

    If you could unseal Obama’s Columbia University records I believe you’d find that:

    A) He rarely ever attended class.

    B) His grades were not those typical of what we understand it takes to get into Harvard Law School.

    C) He attended Columbia as a foreign exchange student.

    D) He paid little for either undergraduate college or Harvard Law School because of foreign aid and scholarships given to a poor foreign students like this kid Barry Soetoro from Indonesia.

    If you think I’m “fishing” then prove me wrong. Open up your records Mr. President. What are you afraid of?

    If it’s okay for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to go on a fishing expedition about Romney’s taxes (even though he knows absolutely nothing about them nor will release his own), then I think I can do the same thing. But as Obama’s Columbia Class of ’83 classmate, at least I have more standing to make educated guesses.

    It’s time for Mitt to go on the attack and call Obama’s bluff.

The study found that Romney’s tax plan, which cuts taxes across the board, would raise the income for the wealthiest taxpayers, who also happen to pay the lion’s share of the taxes.

    Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams responded to the “Romney Hood” remarks by saying Obama has “used taxpayer dollars to grow government and reward his donors” while “middle-class Americans have seen fewer jobs, lower incomes, and less hope for the future.”

    The cancelled speech isn’t the only thing that caused speculation to swirl around Mr. Ryan this afternoon. Eagle-eyed Politico reporter Ken Vogel also noted Mr. Ryan’s political action committee, Prosperity PAC, filed amended versions of its three most recent monthly fundraising reports today.

    “Preparing for big announcement w FEC cleanup?” Mr. Vogel asked.

    Mr. Seifert said the reports had to be amended when Mr. Ryan’s staff noticed a donation made in April was accidentally counted for both the Prosperity Action Committee and the congressman’s joint action committee, a mistake which carried over into subsequent reports.

    Both the FEC cleanup and the cancelled speech could be completely unrelated and innocuous, but at this point, any unusual activity by any of the VP possibilities is going to be heavily analyzed. Knowing that, it’s interesting Ryan decided to amend its fundraising reports at this time, when he could have waited until next month and aroused far less interest. Why choose this time to do it?

    Emails: Geithner, Treasury drove cutoff of non-union Delphi workers’ pensions

    Emails obtained by The Daily Caller show that the U.S. Treasury Department, led by Timothy Geithner, was the driving force behind terminating the pensions of 20,000 salaried retirees at the Delphi auto parts manufacturing company.

    The move, made in 2009 while the Obama administration implemented its auto bailout plan, appears to have been made solely because those retirees were not members of labor unions.

    The internal government emails contradict sworn testimony, in federal court and before Congress, given by several Obama administration figures. They also indicate that the administration misled lawmakers and the courts about the sequence of events surrounding the termination of those non-union pensions, and that administration figures violated federal law.

    Delphi, a General Motors company, is one of the world’s largest automotive parts manufacturers. Twenty thousand of its workers lost nearly their entire pensions when the government bailed out GM. At the same time, Delphi employees who were members of the United Auto Workers union saw their pensions topped off and made whole.

    The White House and Treasury Department have consistently maintained that the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) independently made the decision to terminate the 20,000 non-union Delphi workers’ pension plan. The PBGC is a federal government agency that handles private-sector pension benefits issues. Its charter calls for independent representation of pension beneficiaries’ interests.

    Former Treasury official Matthew Feldman and former White House auto czar Ron Bloom, both key members of the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry during the GM bailout, have testified under oath that the PBGC, not the administration, led the effort to terminate the non-union Delphi workers’ pension plan.

    “As a result of the Delphi Corporation bankruptcy, for example, Delphi and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation were forced to terminate Delphi’s pension plans, which means there are Delphi retirees who unfortunately will collect less than their full pension benefits,” Feldman testified on July 11, 2012.

    The emails TheDC has obtained show that the Treasury Department, not the independent PBGC, was running the show.

    Under 29 U.S.C. §1342, the PBGC is the only government entity that is legally empowered to initiate termination of a pension or make any official movements toward doing so.

    The similarity of reasons and goals shared by enemies foreign and domestic should hardly surprise anyone who’s been keeping an eye on the ball. Whether or not Hillary ever runs for POTUS again, there will be a multitude of us Hillary supporters under the Dimocrat bus, who will never forget how democracy was assaulted in 2008 – the target of a DNC/Obama hit.

    Regarding the possibility that O attended college as an foreign exchange student, I recall seeing this idea put forth in a post on a Hillary blog several years ago. The person who wrote it said that she was the same age as Obama, and would have been attending college around the same time as he. She noted that as a college applicant, she was encouraged by the college to claim a foreign student status. She assumed she was approached about this because she looked foreign, even though her parents had come to this country quite a number of years previously, and she was a citizen at the time she entered school. Her recollection was that there was a big push during that time by some colleges to get foreign students. The blog has since closed, but her story stuck with me. Lots of dots to connect, but they’re there – just waiting for someone to put all the dirty little pieces of info together. I’d bet my lunch money that Barack has a whole closet full of skeletons related to his college years.

    Mitt Romney has more than doubled President Barack Obama’s fundraising in Connecticut. Business Insider notes, what may be more troubling for the Obama campaign is that his lead in what should be a more-than-reliable state for him has decreased to 8 points, according to a recent Public Policy Polling survey.

    Public Policy Polling is a liberal polling outfit that does polling for liberal groups like the Daily Kos and the SEIU. Obama’s numbers are not looking good in poll conducted by a group that usually oversamples Democrats.

    The cross tabs reveal some numbers that should trouble Obama’s reelection campaign: he has a 20-point lead among women but trails Romney by 6 points among men. Romney leads Obama, 47 percent to 40 percent, among independents. Further, Obama only gets 79 percent of the black vote and his approval rating is at 50 percent — in liberal Connecticut.

    “President Obama has quite possibly dropped more in Connecticut than in any other state he won in 2008,” PPP’s Dustin Ingalls wrote. Ingalls notes that even though Obama beat John McCain by over 22 points in Connecticut and now leads Romney only by 8, Obama does not have to worry about Connecticut.

    President Obama has not taken a serious question from the White House press corps in nearly seven weeks, a remarkable string that points to a campaign-style White House operation that is seeking to insulate the candidate from tough cross examination.

    The last substantive question Obama took from a White House reporter was during a June 20 press conference following the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. Obama allowed only six questions during the event, which was nearly guaranteed to keep him out of political hot water as the focus was on foreign policy.

    Since then, Obama has held no press conferences, given no interviews to White House reporters, and taken no questions at the White House events he has held where reporters have been present.

    After a July 26 Cabinet meeting, Obama actually laughed off the prospect of taking a serious question about gun laws.

    Q Mr. President, can you tell us, if what the Colorado shooter did was entirely legal, how do you do more on this subject without any new laws?

    THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. I’m sure we’ll have more opportunity to talk about this.

    During his recent trip to Europe and Israel, Mitt Romney’s failure to take many questions from the frustrated reporters traveling with him sparked an uproar in Washington, even though Romney did in fact hold a press availability during the trip.

    Obama’s silencing of the White House press corps has drawn no similar protest.

    To the contrary, Daily Caller White House reporter Neil Munro was derided by his colleagues when he interrupted Obama’s remarks in the Rose Garden June 15 to try to ask about immigration. Munro said he thought Obama had finished.

    It turns out that was one of the last questions any White House reporter has asked the president.

    Obama has done some interviews with local TV reporters during the interim. But, though they occasionally yield some news, these sessions tend to be easy home runs for the president. Obama is facing reporters less versed in national issues and politics than the White House press corps. And they are more likely to be intimidated by the trappings of the White House, where they suddenly find themselves sitting down with the president of the United States.

    Obama and Michelle also swatted away mainly softballs during a July 12 interview with “CBS The Morning” anchor Charlie Rose.

    Obama did get one feeble question from what appeared to be a White House reporter during his June 29 tour of the fire damage in Colorado Springs. Obama was quizzed, “What do you think when you see just this stuff right here?”

    A new report from the conservative Government Accountability Institute (GAI) finds that President Barack Obama’s and Attorney General Eric Holder’s failure to criminally charge any top Wall Street bankers is likely a result of cronyism inside the Department of Justice and political donations made to Obama’s campaign.

    Despite Obama’s and Holder’s “heated rhetoric” against Wall Street (in 2009, Obama blamed the 2008 financial collapse on “reckless speculation of bankers” while Holder charged that “unscrupulous executives, Ponzi scheme operators and common criminals alike have targeted the pocketbooks and retirement accounts of middle class Americans”), they haven’t “filed a single criminal charge against any top executive of an elite financial institution,” GAI wrote in its report, exclusively obtained by The Daily Caller.

    GAI argues that the Obama administration’s decision to not go after Big Finance is due to senior DOJ leadership — Holder, Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli, Associate Attorney General Tony West, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, Deputy Attorney General James Cole and Deputy Associate Attorney General Karol Mason — who “all came to the DOJ from prestigious white-collar defense firms where they represented the very financial institutions the DOJ is supposed to investigate.”

    The report details how Holder and Breuer both came to the DOJ from Covington & Burling, a “top-tier Washington law firm” with a client list that includes financial firms like Wells Fargo, J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, CitiBank, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, ING, Morgan Stanley, UBS and Wilmington Trust.

    GAI said that President Obama’s decision to choose Holder, “a white-collar defense attorney from Covington,” as his attorney general, over a “more fiery prosecutor,” appears to have sent “a subtle signal to the financial community” that this administration isn’t going to actually do anything, despite the harsh words.

    Cole, the report outlines, was with Bryan Cave LLP — “a white-shoe firm with A-list clients” — before becoming Holder’s right-hand man at the DOJ. One of Cole’s clients while at Bryan Cave LLP, the GAI report shows, was insurance and financial giant AIG.

    Cole had done $20 million worth of work for AIG between 2004 and 2008, but his close ties with the company — which was “at the heart of the financial crisis largely because of its noncompliance in regulatory and compliance issues” — didn’t stop Obama or Holder from welcoming him aboard their administration.

    In the ’08 campaign, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman was running for re-election against Democrat Al Franken. It was impossibly close; on the morning after the election, after 2.9 million people had voted, Coleman led Franken by 725 votes.

    Franken and his Democratic allies dispatched an army of lawyers to challenge the results. After the first canvass, Coleman’s lead was down to 206 votes. That was followed by months of wrangling and litigation. In the end, Franken was declared the winner by 312 votes. He was sworn into office in July 2009, eight months after the election.

    During the controversy a conservative group called Minnesota Majority began to look into claims of voter fraud. Comparing criminal records with voting rolls, the group identified 1,099 felons — all ineligible to vote — who had voted in the Franken-Coleman race.

    Minnesota Majority took the information to prosecutors across the state, many of whom showed no interest in pursuing it. But Minnesota law requires authorities to investigate such leads. And so far, Fund and von Spakovsky report, 177 people have been convicted — not just accused, but convicted — of voting fraudulently in the Senate race. Another 66 are awaiting trial. “The numbers aren’t greater,” the authors say, “because the standard for convicting someone of voter fraud in Minnesota is that they must have been both ineligible, and ‘knowingly’ voted unlawfully.” The accused can get off by claiming not to have known they did anything wrong.

    Still, that’s a total of 243 people either convicted of voter fraud or awaiting trial in an election that was decided by 312 votes. With 1,099 examples identified by Minnesota Majority, and with evidence suggesting that felons, when they do vote, strongly favor Democrats, it doesn’t require a leap to suggest there might one day be proof that Al Franken was elected on the strength of voter fraud.

    And that’s just the question of voting by felons. Minnesota Majority also found all sorts of other irregularities that cast further doubt on the Senate results.

    The election was particularly important because Franken’s victory gave Senate Democrats a 60th vote in favor of President Obama’s national health care proposal — the deciding vote to overcome a Republican filibuster. If Coleman had kept his seat, there would have been no 60th vote, and no Obamacare.

  95. The pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action lobbed a heavy-duty attack at Mitt Romneythis morning, airing an ad that links the closure of a GST Steel plant in Kansas City to the loss of a family’s health insurance — and the death of a woman some time later.

    The man speaking in the ad, Joe Soptic, says, “Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my health care and my family lost their health care. And a short time after that my wife became ill.” Soptic explains he’s not exactly sure when his wife became sick, but that when he took her to the hospital she had undetected, advanced cancer and died 22 days later.

    The Romney campaign has pushed back on other GST Steel-related attacks by arguing that the plant in Kansas City closed after he stepped away from his management job at Bain. (Democrats counter that Romney was still listed as a top executive at Bain through 2002, and that he built up the private equity firm during the time it invested in GST Steel.)

    In the case of this particularly jarring super PAC ad, it may also be relevant that Soptic’s wife died in 2006, years after the GST factory closed down.

    A 2006 story in the Kansas City Star reported the death of Ranae Soptic, a former champion roller skater: “Soptic went to the hospital for pneumonia, but doctors found signs of very advanced cancer, and she died two weeks later on June 22.”

    This is exactly how “pay” was determined in the Soviet Union and other eastern bloc countries. They had “commissars” who determined how much any job was worth based on the basic unit pay of a worker in the metallurgical industry. It was based on Marx’s “Labor theory of value”, i.e. that the value of a product was the sum total of the labor that went into making the product. The Labor theory of value was a tempting theory in the 19th century and was better than the other theories of that time, but Keynes shot it dead.

    Another thing about this communist system was that there was no money. The “rouble” and other currencies existed but were worthless because all products were distributed by ration tickets and “pull” – the higher you rose in the communist party, the more ration tickets you got and you also got access to products and services that were denied to non-communists, and paid in dollars.

    Former Libertarian Party VP candidate Wayne Allen Root who went to Columbia the same years the POS claims to have attended has suggested MR demand the POS release his college transcripts in return for more tax records.

    Root said he was in the same study program as the POS and never met him and neither did his classmates.

    He questions how the POS could have gotten into Occidental and then Columbia based on his poor high school grades and concludes he might have been admitted as a foreign exchange student.

    Now Root says he’s been contacted by an investigator in Indonesia who said he can prove the POS was not a US citizen at the time of his college attendance. And of course there’s that little matter of Americans not being eligible to travel to Pakistan as the POS chronicles in his book.

    Root also said that since publishing his article he has gotten dozens of calls from others who attended Columbia and none of the rememeber the POS. That is consistent with Fox News survey of 400 students from that era who also have no recollection of the POS.

    Let MR ask the POS about that. At least there is a source willing to go on record.

    But if we are talking nbc………if we are going to talk Rubio, then let us talk about the incumbent whose father was born in Kenya or wherever, and Romney whose father was born in Mexico while Rubio’s father was born in Cuba. None of the three are nbc…if one is to be excluded, then all three are subject to exclusion. None of the father’s were American citizens at the time of the birth of the sons.

    Nope Romney’s father was not a US citizen. I researched and found no records that he was a US citizen at the time of Mitts birth.

    If you have records of proof please post them as I did extensive research and reported it here. The Romney’s left the Territory that was not yet a state to go to Mexico; when the Territory became a state the residents currently residing could make an application to become citizens of the state of Utah. The Romney’s left for Mexico before Utah gained its statehood and therefore were not residents at the time of statehood. There is no record to date of an application to become a citizen of the State of Utah.

    That is quite a pass you give Romney. And this has been discussed before and I presented my research that came from original sources.

    The nbc required parents to be citizens at time of birth for a candidate to qualify as a natural born citizen. The incumbent or surrogates have claimed he was born in the US and that would suffice…but it does not meet the nbc requirements.

    It is my belief that surrogates of the incumbent if the going get tough could use this against Romney before the general; natural born status does not need to be proven in courts……..Romney’s father born in Mexico, Incumbent’s father born in Kenya; Rubio’s father born in Cuba. There are no records to prove that the Romney maintained US citizenship to date; but there are documents that prove they were living in a territory and left before the state gained admittance to the US. While they may be citizens of the US; they are not natural born citizens as the law requires.

    I am not willing to give the incumbent a pass; Romney gets a bye because of the Incumbent – maybe; and if those two both get a pass, why hold Rubio to a different standard?

    GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign has addressed the Delphi pension as well, in a May web video.

    Delphi salaried retiree Mary Southerland recounts how she “had interviewed with General Motors at 17 and was hired on at that time, so I had literally spent my whole life with General Motors and Delphi.”

    “Both my husband and I worked for Delphi, and we both lost well over 40 percent of our retirement,” Southerland said.

    Roy Smith, another Delphi salaried retiree, said that Obama promised during his 2008 election campaign “the protection of pensions and the bankruptcy process was a high priority for him.”

    Smith relays how he felt like Obama betrayed him and his peers. “In October of 2009, our pensions were terminated and they were not protected,” he said.

    The ad splices in 2008 campaign trail video of Obama claiming that he considers “pension protection” to be “something we ought to put at the top of our priority list.”

    “Right now, bankruptcy laws are more focused on protecting banks than protecting pensions,” Obama said back then. “And, I don’t think that’s fair. It’s not the America I believe in. It’s time to stop cutting back the safety net for working people while we protect golden parachutes for the well-off. If you’ve worked hard and played by the rules, then you’ve earned your pension. If a company goes bankrupt, then workers need to be our top priority, not an afterthought.”

    Let Freedom Ring president Colin Hanna said in a statement that it’s “clear the Obama Administration has thrown this ‘top priority’ by the wayside, terminating the Delphi salaried pension fund that is funded at a higher amount than the average of the top 100 corporations in America.”

    “And after this they unfairly decided to make the Delphi union workers whole by ‘topping up’ their pensions while they subjected the salaried retirees at the very same company to pension losses of up to 70%,” Hanna added. “Obama’s definition of pension protection would be perfect for late-night comedy if there wasn’t the tragedy of so many people getting hurt by his unfair actions.”

    Jon Lovitz spent much of George W. Bush’s presidency doing what nearly all of his peers did – making fun of the Commander in Chief.

    And no one said a peep.

    When the “Saturday Night Live” alum chided President Barack Obama for saying the rich don’t pay their fair share earlier this year, he ended up letting a security escort walk him to his car.

    Lovitz tells Big Hollywood that his now infamous podcast rant against Obama’s class warfare rhetoric led to death threats left on the voice mail of his Universal City-based comedy club.

    “I know where you eat,” one message warned.

    The comedian, who owns the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club and Podcast Theatre, says he isn’t concerned about his safety. He is riled up, however, about the media, his fellow Democrats and why questioning the president’s policies means complete strangers now accuse him of being a racist.

    The wide-ranging discussion with Big Hollywood also touched on his evolving views on business and the public’s reaction to his Obama critiques.

    The real story, as Lovitz sees it, is how the press is going after comedians. He praised two conservative media outlets for their coverage of his Obama comments.

    “Your site and Twitchy.com, they get the humor. The Huffington Post … their comedy guys have no sense of humor and their headlines are lying,” he says. The latter referenced Lovitz’s guest hosting gig for fellow “SNL” star Dennis Miller on the latter’s weekday radio program.

    We never said we wished more comedians would mock Obama, but that’s the way The Huffington Post’s headline read, he explains.

    Lovitz also got called a racist for critiquing the president, even though he’s never been associated publicly with any racially insensitive comments. It particularly galls him since one of his next projects is co-starring on “Mr. Box Office,” a new television series with a mostly black cast.

    “I don’t see the president as black or white. He’ a man,” Lovitz says, adding he’s frustrated by his own party rushing to slap a racist label on him.

    “What I find bizarre is how the quote liberals are bringing up race … saying, ‘shut the fuck up.’ I find them so close minded. I thought you were liberal,” he says. “You should be tolerant of everybody whether they agree with you or not.”

    Lovitz also takes issue with organizations like GLAAD which pounce on comedians for saying politically incorrect material on stage.

    “They don’t understand irony and sarcasm. They take what [comedians] say literally … it’s ridiculous,” he says.

    Lovitz hasn’t received any specific feedback, good or bad, from his fellow comedians after the fallout from his Obama comments.

    “They’re not not supportive,” he says. The everyday people he meets had a more vocal reaction.

    “I can’t tell you how many people came up and thanked me,” he says.

    Lovitz isn’t wanting for work these days, and he says his recent publicity hasn’t hurt that. His current projects include the upcoming “Grown Ups 2,” the aforementioned sitcom, his comedy club and frequent stand-up appearances (he will appear Aug. 11 along with fellow “SNL” co-star Tim Meadows at the SRC Arena in Syracuse).

    It’s his chores as a comedy club owner which have given him insight into the current economic situation. He routinely asks fellow business owners how they’re managing to make ends meet in this economy, and he usually gets a negative report back.

    “I don’t think I really understood what the economy meant to the degree that I do now,” he says.

    He’s not blaming Obama for that situation. He’s a registered Democrat, and his beef with the President doesn’t mirror what Miller says on his nationally syndicated radio show. Lovitz is more outraged by Obama’s soak the rich rhetoric, which he thinks is a cheap distraction from bigger issues.

    Romneys grandfather and grandmother were both US citizens living in Mexico when Romney’s father, George Romney was born. By definition making Romney’s father a US Citizen.

    In emails to supporters in Ohio, Florida, and Minnesota, Obama for America invites critics of hometown pols Sen. Rob Portman, Sen. Marco Rubio, and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty to “share what you think Americans need to know about” the could-be vice presidential candidates.

    An email to Obama for America’s Minnesota supporters calls Pawlenty “our former governor and ‘Obamneycare’ critic” and asks if the onetime presidential candidate “will really be Mitt Romney’s running mate.”

    “Most Americans don’t know Tim Pawlenty,” the email reads. “But as a Minnesotan, you do — and the truth is painful for the middle-class families who lived under his leadership. Like Romney, Pawlenty proved that when he’s in charge, fees and taxes go up, job creation goes down, transparency gets worse, and women’s rights are threatened.”

    A similar message was sent to Ohio Obama backers about Sen. Rob Portman: “The most damning pieces of his record involve choices he made as a senior member of the Bush-Cheney administration and conservative congressman, the consequences of which still reverberate on a national scale.”

    The message continued: “As one of the architects of the top-down Bush budget, Portman practically invented the policies that punished middle-class families while exploding the deficit, and crashing our economy.”

    Each email contains a link to a clearinghouse site where participants can, for example, “share what you think the rest of the country should know about what Rubio’s really done in Florida — the good, bad, and ugly — and why he’d be a disaster as our next vice president.”

    Obama is trying every trick in the book to sandbag Romney. We’ll have to wait and see what else he’s got up his sleeve. When I read about the DOJ was investigating Adelson’s casino business operation for money laundering as far back as 10 years ago. I was surprised they readily admitted they had not uncovered anything illegal in Adelson’s business affairs.

    The DOJ’s investigation demoted itself into looking into the gambling patrons spending habits frequenting Adelson’s casino having mega millions in losses inquiring where is the origin of their money?

    The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning.

    A 2011 Congressional Research Service report stated:
    The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term “natural born” citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship “by birth” or “at birth,” either by being born “in” the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship “at birth.” Such term, however, would not include a person who was not a U.S. citizen by birth or at birth, and who was thus born an “alien” required to go through the legal process of “naturalization” to become a U.S. citizen.

    “No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.” The Fourteenth Amendment does not use the phrase natural-born citizen. The plaintiff, Julia Lynch, had been born in New York while her parents, both British, were briefly visiting the U.S., and shortly thereafter all three left for Britain and never returned to the U.S. The New York Chancery Court determined that, under common law and prevailing statutes, she was a U.S. citizen by birth and nothing had deprived her of that citizenship, notwithstanding that both her parents were not U.S. citizens or that British law might also claim her through her parents’ nationality. In the course of the decision, the court cited the Constitutional provision and said:

    Suppose a person should be elected president who was native born, but of alien parents; could there be any reasonable doubt that he was eligible under the Constitution? I think not. The position would be decisive in his favor, that by the rule of the common law, in force when the Constitution was adopted, he is a citizen.

    And further:

    Upon principle, therefore, I can entertain no doubt, but that by the law of the United States, every person born within the dominions and allegiance of the United States, whatever the situation of his parents, is a natural born citizen. It is surprising that there has been no judicial decision upon this question.

    The decision in Lynch v. Clarke was cited as persuasive or authoritative precedent in numerous subsequent cases, including In re: Look Tin Sing, on the issue of whether the child, born in the U.S., to two Chinese parents (who were prevented by federal law from becoming U.S. citizens) was a U.S. citizen, notwithstanding the nationality of his parents or the fact that he had traveled to China with them and not returned to the U.S. for many years. The federal court held in a decision written by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen J. Field) that he was a citizen by birth, and remained such despite his long stay in China, cited the decision in Lynch v. Clarke and described that case:

    Anyone born in the US is a NBC.. However, to be eligible as a candidate for the US presidency, the future candidate has to be born in the US having both parents US citizens at the time of his birth.

    A consensus of Constitutional scholars has already stated that Romney’s citizenship would qualify in a review by a court because his parents never renounced their US citizenship even though his father was born in Mexico of US citizens. Further, there is an unbroken line of US citizenship in Romney’s family going back to the 19th century. Rubio’s case is one of US citizenship but loses on the side of qualifying for the VP slot or the presidency because his parents were both Cuban citizens at the time of his birth. Even if they had been naturalized before he was born, he still would not meet the threshold of eligibility required by the Constitution.

    I researched this topic at length spending over a month, on an off reading pdf documents of case law defining natural born citizenship and the uniqueness of each case for a candidate’s eligibility in 08′-

    Nothing has changed- with regard to the eligibility for a presidential candidate to be a NBC born of two US citizens as was determined with McCain.

    But Soptic is actually a familiar face on the anti-Bain beat, and accused Romney of this before.

    In January, Soptic complained to Democracy Now, a liberal non-profit TV station, that when the steel company he worked for was bought out by Bain, they tried to buy out his job.

    “I guess the first thing I noticed that when the company was bought out by GST, they became very union non-friendly, they started looking for ways to eliminate jobs,” Soptic said.

    “In my case in my department, they actually offered to buy our jobs out from underneath us,” Soptic said.

    Why is Soptic upset? Primarily, its because his pension was cut. In this interview, Soptic clarified that his 401k was not affected but he lost $400 a month from his pension.

    But in a January 2012 Reuters story, Soptic reportedly said that he only lost $283 per month from his pension.

    Soptic also explained to Reuters that he took a school janitor job, with a starting salary of $24,000, and did not have a health insurance plan that covered his wife. His wife, died of advanced lung cancer that was discovered after she went to the hospital for pneumonia.

    “My wife had to quit working, and we didn’t have any health insurance for her. . . and I couldn’t afford health insurance for her,” Soptic told Democracy Now, adding that he had to liquidate his 401K to pay the hospital bills after her death.

    Syria rebel group says killed Russian general

    A Syrian rebel group said on Wednesday it had killed a Russian general working as an adviser to Syria’s ministry of defense in an operation in the western Ghouta region on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

    A video statement from a group calling itself the “Hawks Special Operations Battalion…a division of the Military Leadership of Damascus City and Province”, gave the name of the general as Vladimir Petrovich Kochyev. The video, sent to Reuters, showed what the rebels said was a copy of his ID, as issued by the Syrian military.

    The same group claimed responsibility for the assassination of four of President Bashar al-Assad’s top lieutenants in Damascus last month.

    There was no immediate comment from the Russian authorities.

    Russia, which has an estimated several hundred military personnel in Syria, is one of the few countries still backing Assad diplomatically since a popular uprising against his rule erupted 17 months ago.

    As speculation over whom Mitt Romney might choose as a running mate reaches a fever pitch, one of the Republicans rumored to be on the short list — Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan — is going on vacation.

    Ryan told reporters here that he is taking his family to Colorado, beginning Saturday, for a weeklong trip during the summer congressional recess.

    “I’m just doing my August schedule as I planned my August,” Ryan said, adding that he will first spend the next two days campaigning in Northwest Wisconsin for local candidates.

    Friday, Ryan said he will spend the day in his native Janesville preparing for his trip by getting his tent and backpack ready.

    Meanwhile, speculation has grown surrounding just when Romney will name his No. 2 has grown; some believe it could come as early as this week. That, presumably, would take Ryan out of the equation if he maintains his current schedule and heads to Colorado.

    Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who are seen as the other top VP contenders, are campaigning for Romney this week. Portman has five events Wednesday in Colorado while Pawlenty has scheduled events in Michigan and New Hampshire through the end of the week. Romney kicks off a four day, four state bus tour on Saturday.

    While Ryan’s name has been mentioned more and more in the past few days, the congressman brushed that off.

    “I think that’s just because of the convention. Its volume,” he said while greeting folks at Oak Creek’s National Night Out event.

    Ryan commonly refuses to discuss his VP chances — as he did tonight when a constituent asked him about it — but said Tuesday night he will definitely attend the GOP convention in Tampa.

    “Scott [Walker], our governor, we’re doing a beer and brats thing,” the congressman said, adding that he wasn’t sure whether he would have a speaking position at the convention.

    “My staff has talked to Reince [Priebus]. I haven’t talked to Reince,” Ryan said of the Republican National Committee chairman and fellow Wisconsinite.”I haven’t talked to Reince in awhile.”

    Ryan was scheduled to speak at a vigil later Tuesday night to honor the victims of the shooting at the Sikh Temple Sunday in his district.

    PRETORIA (Reuters) – Syria must not be allowed to descend into a sectarian war, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday, and she warned against “proxies or terrorist fighters” being sent in to join the conflict.

    “We have to set very clear expectations about avoiding sectarian warfare,” Clinton said, answering a question on Syria during a news conference in the South African capital Pretoria, her latest stop in a tour of Africa.

    “Those who are attempting to exploit the situation by sending in proxies or terrorist fighters must realize that will not be tolerated, first and foremost by the Syrian people,” she added.

    The U.S. secretary of state made the comments as Syrian government forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad encircled rebels in the country’s biggest city of Aleppo.

    She did not elaborate on her reference to “proxies or terrorist fighters” or name any particular country or group.

    But the escalating war in Syria has increasingly divided the region along its sectarian faultline, pitting the mainly Sunni rebels, who are backed by regional Sunni-led powers Turkey and the Gulf Arab states, against Assad’s government that is backed by Shi’ite Iran.

    Iran assured the Syrian president on Tuesday that it viewed his country as a vital partner.

    With action on Syria at the United Nations Security Council effectively blocked by vetoes from Russia and China, the United States and its allies have pledged to increase political support for the Syrian opposition.

    Clinton said the United States had taken note of the defection on Monday of Assad’s Prime Minister Riyad Hijab, who fled the country and denounced the “terrorist regime” in Damascus.

    The defection of Hijab, who like most of the opposition hails from the Sunni Muslim majority, was a further sign of the isolation of Assad’s government around an inner core of powerful members of his minority Alawite sect.

    “That’s the latest in a line of such defections and the opposition is becoming increasingly coordinated and effective. It now reportedly holds territory from northern Aleppo to the Turkish border,” Clinton said, adding the rebels had also seized weapons from the government, including tanks.

    PLANS FOR POST-ASSAD SYRIA

    Clinton said the opposition gains, combined with the fracturing of some of Assad’s support, made it imperative for the world to step up work on planning for a post-Assad Syria.

    “We can begin talking about and planning for what happens next, the day after the regime does fall. I’m not going to put a timeline on it, I can’t possibly predict it, but I know it’s going to happen,” Clinton said.

    “We must figure out ways to hasten the day when the bloodshed ends and the political transition begins … We have to make very sure that state institutions stay intact,” she said.

    Clinton said she intended to discuss the challenges facing Syria when she flies to Turkey for talks on Saturday. Turkey has been a vocal critic of Assad’s internal crackdown, but will also host Iran’s foreign minister for separate talks.

    The U.S. secretary of state also discussed the Syria issue with South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, whose country has expressed doubts about the U.S.-led drive to impose tough international measures on Assad.

    South Africa joined Pakistan in abstaining during the latest U.N. Security Council vote on possible sanctions on Damascus, saying the draft resolution was unbalanced because it only targeted the government and not the rebels. This echoed similar Russian and Chinese complaints.

    Nkoana-Mashabane told the news conference in Pretoria that South Africa could only support a “made-in-Syria” solution to the crisis that did not involve foreign intervention.

    “South Africa’s position is and has always been that no amount of bloodshed will ever take the place of a political solution,” she said.

    As I’ve said before, the Russians have a deep investment in the Syrian regime going back more than 50 years. “Several hundred” sounds very conservative to me. Russian general staff took an active part in the 1967 war, and KGB agents were so numerous when I was there that they became invisible: You just had to assume that anyone you talked to was a KGB asset, including branches of Syrian secret services in Lebanon. Assad is probably hiding out in Russia.

    Mind you, this doesn’t mean the Russians will oppose any form of democratic rule, or are in favor of bloodshed and opposed to a peaceful transition; but they most definitely want to be at the table when that transition occurs, and in control thereafter.

    When Hillary says “We have to make very sure that state institutions stay intact” (see my post above), I see that as a sop to the Russians. She knows that the most powerful of Syrian “state institutions” are made in Russia.

    yheitman.. there has been much written opinion on what constitutes a natural born citizen who is eligible for the presidency since Obama’s eligibility has been in question. I don’t intend to belabor the issue until it becomes such in the public domain if Rubio should be asked to become Romney’s running mate.

    As my reference, I refer back to the intent of the Founding Fathers, the framers of the Constitution, their view of a candidate who would be eligible as a Natural Born Citizen for the presidency or as the VP in line for the presidency here:

    In the case law you’ve cited- Lynch v Clarke.. I don’t believe the case is applicable to the question of presidential eligibility because the case was concerning her eligibility under the law at that time where only citizens could inherit Real Estate. Jane Lynch was not and never was a candidate for the presidency.

    So, I am not convinced the case law of Lynch v Clarke is sufficient evidence that Rubio is eligible under the law. However, it’s pretty clear Romney’s eligibility would qualify under the law as the framers intended.

    It’s also customary when we debate an issue to provide a link to the facts you’ve state to give people the opportunity to review the source of your argument.

    In what is clearly a nod toward the libertarian-leaning Senator and his longtime fiscal conservative Congressman father and former GOP candidate Ron Paul, the Romney campaign has just confirmed Rand Paul will be among a select group of primetime speakers at the upcoming GOP convention this month.

    Inside-the-campaign reports have long suggested both Ron Paul and Mitt Romney were on friendlier terms than other was the case between other Republican candidates during an often bitter fight for the nomination. This good nature is now being extended to Ron Paul’s son and rising star within the Republican Party – Rand Paul. There remain whispers that the popular Kentucky Senator was being considered for the VP slot – though such considerations never reached beyond mere campaign speculation.

    Romney is also extending another prime time speaking slot to Rick Santorum, possibly his fiercest rival during the Republican primary race. Both men have since mended fences (at least publicly), and Santorum has publicly declared his intent to help make Barack Obama a one and done president.

    GOP To File Lawsuit Against Obama Attorney General Eric Holder

    The fact is Obama has tried numerous times to get the nbc law changed to include his particular situation as acceptable for the definition of natural born citizen.

    However, the further back you go in history as you pointed out, the framers of the Constitution knew this could be a problem further on down the road due to the influx and immigration of many European citizens.

    For the office of the US presidency they revealed their intent as a nbc’s status should be held to a higher standard than a nbc contesting a real estate inheritance. And why their criteria for a candidate for the US presidency reveals that both parents be US citizens at the time of the birth of any subsequent children who’s future intentions would be as a candidate for the US presidency.

    I’m sorry but I believe the Founding Fathers knew what they were doing and in fear their newly formed government consisting of three unique branches served to balance power within their democratic framework. Their idea potentially thwarting a takeover by foreigners immigrating to America having a child and that child elected to the seat of power of the US government. When you remove all names and address just the facts and the intent behind the facts.. it’s a realistic approach the founders had to protect a brand new government and country from all newcomers to the country from destroying what they had worked so hard to create.

    Weekly Standard: It’s Romney’s Race To Win

    The conventional wisdom in the presidential race is that President Obama is a clear favorite. We hear this from the pundits in the press, we see it in the InTrade odds, and various predictive models built around the polling averages tell us this. But I disagree.
    For starters, I believe it is based upon a historically naïve view of summer political polling. Yes, Obama enjoys a modest lead in the nationwide vote, as well in the swing states, but consider the bounciness of the polling in 1968, 1976, 1980, 1988, 1992, and 2000. It is not hard to see that political polling before and after the conventions looks different — in ways that endure beyond the traditional “convention bounces.”
    There is another problem with the received wisdom, which is that it is built on the assumption that all voters are equally persuadable. They are not, which is why President Obama’s three-point margin over Mitt Romney needs to be understood in the context of where he actually is in those polls.
    For the last two months, President Obama has bounced around between 46 and 48 percent of the vote in the national polls, as well as most averages of the state polls. Impressive? Hardly. Forty-six to 48 percent is really just the core Democratic coalition, which every Democrat has held for the past quarter century.
    The old Democratic party broke down in 1968, the start of a long presidential exile. The party managed only one victory out of the next six; worse, it saw the collapse of its traditional New Deal coalition built on the Solid South, the white working class in and around the big Northern cities, and farmers/ranchers in the West. Slowly but surely, the party rebuilt itself into the coalition we know today — dominated by racial and ethnic minorities, upscale white liberals (especially activist groups like the environmentalists and feminists), government workers, and young voters. It was in the 1988 election that we saw the party coming back from the brink, and every cycle since then the Democrats have enjoyed a floor of about 46 percent of the vote, built around roughly 90 percent of Democratic support, 40 percent of independent support, and 10 percent of Republican support.
    If you look carefully at the national horserace polls, you will notice that these are the only people supporting Obama over Romney, more or less. And if you look carefully at the presidential job approval polls, you will notice that these are also the only people approving of his job performance, more or less.
    In other words, Obama’s polling right now suggests that he has only locked down the core Democratic vote; what’s more, those not currently in his voting coalition tend to disapprove of his job as president. Indeed, the Gallup job approval poll finds him with just 31 percent support from “pure” independents, i.e. those with no party affiliation whatsoever.
    It is extraordinarily difficult for incumbent presidents to win the votes of people who disapprove of the job they are doing. Hence, this race is Romney’s to win.
    But it is not his to lose. And that’s an important distinction.
    It is difficult to overcome the hurdle that Obama faces — to win voters who think you’ve done a bad job as president — but not impossible. Richard Nixon in 1972 won a significant chunk of his disapprovers because the McGovern-Shriver ticket was not a serious option. Lyndon Johnson managed the same in 1964, as he made the Goldwater-Miller ticket out to be a threat to humanity itself.
    The 1964 election is particularly important to understanding the 2012 campaign. I have argued in the past that, bereft of popular legislative achievements, a sound economy, or a manageable deficit, President Obama is left running a version of LBJ’s 1964 campaign. Johnson was worried that passage of the Civil Rights Act would spark a backlash that would keep him from his goal of the largest victory in history. Hence, the “frontlash” strategy, designed to make typically Republican voters (mostly moderates in the Northeast) scared to death of Goldwater. “The stakes are too high,” LBJ warned the country in ad after ad.
    Obama is basically running this campaign. If LBJ made Goldwater a threat to western civilization, Obama is trying to make Romney into a corporate raider who will bring about a new feudalism.
    This points to Romney’s challenge, and it is a significant one. Obviously, he needs to remind swing voters of all the things about the Obama tenure that they do not like, but he also must counter Obama’s negative campaign. He cannot allow himself to be tagged as a capitalist pig whose only goal is personal enrichment. Instead, he must aggressively and constantly push the idea that he is a decent, public-spirited man whose background is precisely what this country needs.
    This is why a bold vice presidential selection is a good start. A vibrant, articulate conservative who can make the positive case for a change would be an important signal that Team Romney understands it is not enough to get the country to say “no” to Obama, but also say “yes” to Romney. Beyond that, while the Tampa convention should toss out plenty of red meat to conservatives, it must dedicate much more effort to promoting Romney as the best leader to fix our problems. Similarly, during the ad wars and the fall debates, Romney must not focus singularly on the case against Obama — the president has made that himself over three years of bad governance — but dedicate substantial effort to making the case for himself.
    By Election Day, there will be two stories about Mitt Romney. The one, which we have already heard from Team Obama, portrays Romney as a heartless capitalist. The other is a case still to be made, from Team Romney, that he is a pragmatic problem solver who understands the private economy and can fix it.
    If a majority of voters think that Romney’s story is closer to the truth than Obama’s, then Mitt Romney will be elected the 45th President of the United States.

    The final three: We can say with a high degree of confidence that Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential pick has largely come down to three men: former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Sen. Portman would be the insider, someone who knows the ways of Washington and who could help govern starting on Day 1. Indeed, Ryan has emerged a VERY REAL possibility, but he also brings the most risk. If Romney selects him, it’s more than conceivable that the dominant campaign discussion in the fall won’t be the economy — but rather the deficit and Medicare. Of course, there was already a good chance the Ryan plan will get plenty attention regardless of Romney’s VP pick.

    At a fund-raiser for the president at his Westport, Conn., estate Monday night, Harvey Weinstein spoke in a softly lit room shimmering with pink dahlias, gold Oscars, silvery celebrities and black American Express cards.

    “You can make the case,” Weinstein said of Barack Obama, “that he’s the Paul Newman of American presidents.”

    I interviewed Paul Newman. I knew Paul Newman. Paul Newman was an acquaintance of mine. Mr. President, except for the eyes, you are sort of like Paul Newman.

    “I’ve been accused of being aloof,” Newman told me. “I’m not. I’m just wary.”

    The star scorned the hoops he was expected to jump through in his profession and did not like feeling beholden. He said he dealt with fame by developing “selective insensitivities.”

    “With film critics and fans, you have to be selectively insensitive to their insensitivities,” he told me. “If people start treating you like a piece of meat or a long-lost friend or feel they can become cuddly for the price of a $5 movie ticket, then you shut them out.”

    Just so, the president does not think people should expect too much in return for paying $35,800 for an hour of his time, as they did at the Weinstein affair, or in return for other favors.

    Obama smashed through all the barriers and dysfunction in his life to become a self-made, self-narrating president. His brash 2008 campaign invented a new blueprint to upend the Democratic establishment. So it’s understandable if Obama, with his Shaker aesthetic, is not inclined to play by the rococo rules of politics. Yet, as the president struggles to stay ahead of Moneybags Romney, his selective insensitivities may be hurting him.

    Care and feeding has been outsourced to Joe Biden, who loves it, but it doesn’t build the same kind of loyalty as when the president does it.

    “He comes from the neediest profession of all, except for acting, but he is not needy and he doesn’t fully understand the neediness of others; it’s an abstraction to him,” says Jonathan Alter, who wrote “The Promise” about Obama’s first year in office and is working on a sequel. “He’s not an ungracious person, but he can be guilty of ingratitude. It’s not a politically smart way for him to operate.”

    Newman wanted to be an actor, not a movie star. Obama wants to be a policy maker, not a glad-handing pol. Sometimes after political events, even small meetings, he requires decompression time. Unlike Harry Truman or George Bush senior, he prefers not to mix relaxing with networking. He sticks mostly to golf with his male aides.

    “Needy politicians, like Bill Clinton, recharge at political events,” says Alter. “But, for Obama, they deplete rather than create energy.”

    Richard Wolffe, the author of Obama portraits, “Renegade” and “Revival,” agreed: “The very source of his strength as an individual, that he willed himself into being, that he’s a solitary figure who doesn’t need many people, is also clearly a weakness. There are people who’ve worked with him for years who don’t understand why he gives so little back.”

    From the first time Obama made a splash with an anti-apartheid speech at Occidental College, says David Maraniss, author of “Barack Obama: The Story,” he has been ambivalent, even perverse.

    “He realized that he could stir crowds while also thinking to himself that it was all a game and posturing,” the biographer said. “He is always removed and participating at the same time, self-conscious and without the visceral need or love of transactional politics that would characterize Bill Clinton or L.B.J. or even W., in a way.”

    What will save him, Maraniss believes, is his fierce competitive will. “His is cool and Clinton’s is hot, but they burn at the same temperature inside,” he said. “So he does some of what he finds distasteful, but not all of it, and not all of it very well.”

    One thing, though: Paul Newman sent thank-you notes.

    At a fund-raiser for the president at his Westport, Conn., estate Monday night, Harvey Weinstein spoke in a softly lit room shimmering with pink dahlias, gold Oscars, silvery celebrities and black American Express cards.

    “You can make the case,” Weinstein said of Barack Obama, “that he’s the Paul Newman of American presidents.”

    I interviewed Paul Newman. I knew Paul Newman. Paul Newman was an acquaintance of mine. Mr. President, except for the eyes, you are sort of like Paul Newman.

    “I’ve been accused of being aloof,” Newman told me. “I’m not. I’m just wary.”

    The star scorned the hoops he was expected to jump through in his profession and did not like feeling beholden. He said he dealt with fame by developing “selective insensitivities.”

    “With film critics and fans, you have to be selectively insensitive to their insensitivities,” he told me. “If people start treating you like a piece of meat or a long-lost friend or feel they can become cuddly for the price of a $5 movie ticket, then you shut them out.”

    Just so, the president does not think people should expect too much in return for paying $35,800 for an hour of his time, as they did at the Weinstein affair, or in return for other favors.

    Obama smashed through all the barriers and dysfunction in his life to become a self-made, self-narrating president. His brash 2008 campaign invented a new blueprint to upend the Democratic establishment. So it’s understandable if Obama, with his Shaker aesthetic, is not inclined to play by the rococo rules of politics. Yet, as the president struggles to stay ahead of Moneybags Romney, his selective insensitivities may be hurting him.

    Stories abound of big donors who stopped giving as much or working as hard because Obama never reached out, either with a Clinton-esque warm bath of attention or Romney-esque weekend love fests and Israeli-style jaunts; of celebrities who gave concerts for his campaigns and never received thank-you notes or even his full attention during the performance; of public servants upset because they knocked themselves out at the president’s request and never got a pat on the back; of V.I.P.’s disappointed to get pictures of themselves with the president with the customary signature withheld; of politicians disaffected by the president’s penchant for not letting members of Congress or local pols stand on stage with him when he’s speaking in their state (they often watch from the audience and sometimes have to lobby just to get a shout-out); of power brokers, local and national, who felt that the president insulted them by never seeking their advice or asking them to come to the White House or ride along in the limo for a schmooze.

    Care and feeding has been outsourced to Joe Biden, who loves it, but it doesn’t build the same kind of loyalty as when the president does it.

    “He comes from the neediest profession of all, except for acting, but he is not needy and he doesn’t fully understand the neediness of others; it’s an abstraction to him,” says Jonathan Alter, who wrote “The Promise” about Obama’s first year in office and is working on a sequel. “He’s not an ungracious person, but he can be guilty of ingratitude. It’s not a politically smart way for him to operate.”

    Newman wanted to be an actor, not a movie star. Obama wants to be a policy maker, not a glad-handing pol. Sometimes after political events, even small meetings, he requires decompression time. Unlike Harry Truman or George Bush senior, he prefers not to mix relaxing with networking. He sticks mostly to golf with his male aides.

    “Needy politicians, like Bill Clinton, recharge at political events,” says Alter. “But, for Obama, they deplete rather than create energy.”

    Richard Wolffe, the author of Obama portraits, “Renegade” and “Revival,” agreed: “The very source of his strength as an individual, that he willed himself into being, that he’s a solitary figure who doesn’t need many people, is also clearly a weakness. There are people who’ve worked with him for years who don’t understand why he gives so little back.”

    From the first time Obama made a splash with an anti-apartheid speech at Occidental College, says David Maraniss, author of “Barack Obama: The Story,” he has been ambivalent, even perverse.

    “He realized that he could stir crowds while also thinking to himself that it was all a game and posturing,” the biographer said. “He is always removed and participating at the same time, self-conscious and without the visceral need or love of transactional politics that would characterize Bill Clinton or L.B.J. or even W., in a way.”

    What will save him, Maraniss believes, is his fierce competitive will. “His is cool and Clinton’s is hot, but they burn at the same temperature inside,” he said. “So he does some of what he finds distasteful, but not all of it, and not all of it very well.”

    One thing, though: Paul Newman sent thank-you notes.

    Further, the Obama campaign certainly is familiar with the story of Soptic, despite claims by top campaign aides that they’re not as they tried to make the case Wednesday that the super PAC ad had nothing to do with the campaign’s work.

    Soptic appeared in a pair of Obama campaign videos in May which hammered Romney over his former company Bain Capital’s role before GST filed for bankruptcy.

    “They made as much money off it as they could, and they closed it down,” Soptic said in that video, wearing what appears to be the same shirt he wore in the most recent ad. “It was like watching an old friend bleed to death.”

    This week, Soptic reemerged in the Priorities USA ad telling how his wife got sick, and later died of cancer, after he was let go at GST steel.

    Asked about the spot, Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs stressed that the super PAC is not connected to the campaign.

    “This is an ad by an entity that’s not controlled by campaign. I certainly don’t know the specifics of this man’s case,” he said on MSNBC.

    Under questioning, he said again: “I don’t know the specifics of this person’s case.”

The Republicans took the House in 2010 because the American People oppose Obamacare. Now, apparently, Romney advisor Andrea Saul has spoke approvingly of Romneycare. This gaff threatens to undue the fragile alliance Romney has forged with Bush. So now when he says he will do away with Obamacare on Day I of his presidency they wonder if he is not behaving as Bush Sr. did when he said read my lips–no new taxes, and then turned right around after he got elected and proposed tax increases. Voters never forgave him. From the beginning, part of the thinking in the Romney camp has been that they can win without the grass roots, and it is more important to court RINOs and those in the middle. That was and is a sure fire formula for failure. Mitt needs to repudiate Saul and other spokesmen who get him in trouble.     Mitt Romney’s ardent supporters are fit to be tied today. Andrea Saul cited Romneycare approvingly, conservatives rightly piled on, and Romney supporters are defending the guy.

    “You’re hurting him,” cried one.

    “Thanks for making this the big story of the day, Jackass,” cried another.

    Andrea Saul made this the big story of the day. She is hurting Romney. She is an official voice of the campaign. This was an unforced error of monumental idiocy and the blowback is deserved, appropriate, and — most importantly — absolutely necessary.

    What conservatives are doing re Andrea Saul’s comment is the same as how you housebreak your dog. Romney needs to know not to go there.

    The reaction should come quickly and be vocal or the Romney campaign, which is not conservative, will take it as a tacit admission from conservatives that it is safe to let their hair down on these issues.

    Many will say this should wait until after the campaign is over. But we’ve seen this play out before. Once George Bush was elected, we had to keep the fragile coalition together. Then it was the war. Then it was re-election. We got to TARP and the GM bailout and people were still yelling that we could not criticize the Bush Administration lest we help Barack Obama.

    These supporters are enablers of the $16 trillion debt we presently have. If we cannot vocally and forcefully hold Mitt Romney accountable now, there will be a new excuse after the election for why we cannot hold him accountable, just as there always has been up to $16 trillion.

    Last year, while many of us were telling the GOP to hold the line on raising the debt ceiling, the very same people who today are telling us to shut up about Mitt Romney were telling us to shut up about not raising the debt ceiling. What did we get? A super committee and possible sequestration in exchange for two extra trillion dollars in debt.

    Now many of these same people are telling us, with the super committee’s failure that so many of predicted would fail by design, we must scrap sequestration because of defense cuts. So we’ll get several trillion dollars more in debt with no cuts. This is exactly what I and others were warning about and it came to pass exactly as we said it would.

    Still the Republican enablers would have us say nothing because . . . campaign season.

    Should Mitt Romney be elected President of the United States, the very same American press corps that calls both small government conservatives and white supremacists “far right,” will call Mitt Romney a conservative whether he is or is not. The press corps is either too stupid or too liberal to be nuanced on these issues. [Note: embrace the healing power of “and”]

    Therefore, if we are not vocally on the record now that it is madness for the Romney camp to praise a failed healthcare regime in Massachusetts, between the press and Romney’s present enablers, we’ll surrender that right after the election.

    No one doubts we must beat Barack Obama. No one doubts Mitt Romney is the only vehicle with which we can beat Barack Obama. But I doubt we can if the Romney camp makes unforced errors and those errors — not being vocal about those errors — shake the fragile truce conservatives have with him in the name of beating Obama.

    You and I may go vote for Mitt Romney, but there are some in the center-right coalition who lean toward the libertarian end of the spectrum who will just sit it out. There are independents who will sit it out. They need to know Romney has seen the error of his ways and is not, as so many of the candidates in the primary season said he was, not very different from the man he is trying to beat.

    Also, it is worth noting as some of you forget, I carry water for no candidate, including for Mitt Romney. I’m not willing to sacrifice intellectual honesty or integrity to see him head into office thinking he can get a pass from the right on a destructive healthcare policy he still refuses to admit is economically damaging.

That said, I must also tell you that the praise of Romneycare makes me suspicious that the campaign does not understand the importance of the grass roots, and believes he can win with establishment republicans and independents. A year ago, this was the rumor. It is vitally important now for Romney to reassure conservatives that he is not another Manchurian candidate. First, he needs to rebuke and preferably fire this spokeswoman—media secretary. Second, he needs to pick Rubio, if his ego can stand to do that. Unfortunately, he will do neither.

    Law enforcement agencies are planning to boost their patrols of Tampa’s waterways during the Republican National Convention.

    The RNC will be held later this month on the city’s waterfront. Federal and local law enforcement agencies say they’ll saturate the waterway with armed boat patrols.

  231. BTW, about cancer, when my lymphoma was diagnosed it was at Stage 3. It’s very common with certain cancers to have no symptoms until you’re in the latest stages. It’s quite possible the woman was symptom free until developing the pneumonia which then led to the Stage 4 diagnosis and the short survival.

There are speeches, panel discussions and working groups on every aspect of government. The problem is, though, almost all of these discussions are steered toward government doing more, rather than less. Ideas arising out of the conference are generally biased to expand the reach of government. In fact, many of these sessions are essentially how-to-guides for growing government.
    Lawmakers will also meet in “committees” where, with the input of many outside interests they will decide “policies” which the organization will use to lobby Congress. Invariably this lobbying seeks to increase the flow of federal taxpayer money to state governments.

    And, we pay for it. NCSL receives a significant percentage of its budget from “dues” paid by the individual states. In addition to this, the organization receives grants from the federal government, private foundations and “sponsorship” contributions from corporations and unions. (Lobbyists and union reps also pay $1,200 to attend the conference and enjoy access to the lawmakers.)

    Why are we funding this? Why is it that everytime I turn around the left has managed to mulct the public fisc for yet another one of their taxpayer-financed agenda items, and no one does a damn thing about it?

He can “executive order” all he wants, but if he isn’t granted the funds by Congress, he is left with nothing and the country is left with a bit of hope for survival.

    For what it is worth to give you all a bit of hope, I live in SW PA and for every Obama ad, I am now seeing Romney ads. His campaign has not thrown in the towel for this state.

    Ten seconds into the ad “Always,” an employee is shown from behind, pushing up the security door of Krause’s while Obama talks about owners sacrificing to make their businesses run. The owner of the store, Debra Krause-McDonnell, said she did not give permission for her business to be shown and that some customers have told her they’ll no longer shop there. She says she’s “contemplating legal action.”

    “I’ve been put into a position I didn’t ask for,” she said Wednesday after the Hamilton County Republican Party sent out an email about the ad that accused Democrats of not responding to the owner’s concerns. “I’m a little angry.”

    She’d be just as angry, she said, if it were an ad for Mitt Romney.

    A store manager knew about the filming, Krause-McDonnell said, but was told it was for a survey on riot doors, those metal garage-type doors that pull down and lock to protect storefronts. That might be true, said Caleb Faux, director of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, who researched the ad confusion and spoke with Obama campaign officials in Columbus.

    The footage was among some stock footage bought from a Cincinnati video company, Faux said. He did not know the name of the company, but said he was told by the Obama campaign that company officials said they did explain to Krause’s manager that they were filming stock footage that could be purchased and used for any reason.

    Faux said he first spoke with Krause-McDonnell on a Friday night and called the campaign, which got back to him by Sunday. They couldn’t immediately do anything about the ad, he said, over the weekend but told him it would be ending anyway Monday.

    Krause-McDonnell said she still saw the ad after Faux told her the campaign said it would be off the air. It is no longer airing, but can be seen on YouTube.

    Faux disagreed that Krause-McDonnell would be just as angry if the ad were airing for Romney.

    “From my conversations with her, it’s clear she’s not an Obama supporter,” he said. “So she’s got a political agenda.”

    Tea Party-backed Rep. Akin wins Missouri GOP Senate primary to take on McCaskill

    Score another win for the Tea Party.

    Missouri Rep. Todd Akin broke out of a three-way GOP primary fight Tuesday and won the nomination to take on Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in the fall. Akin had played up his Tea Party credentials, in an unusual primary race in which all three candidates claimed conservative, outsider appeal.

    The results send yet another Tea Party-backed candidate into the general election, with the McCaskill face-off considered one of the most closely watched Senate races of the year.

    Akin won a contest defined by which candidate was the most conservative. In doing so, he beat out Sarah Palin’s candidate of choice, former state treasurer Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner, a businessman who poured more than $7.5 million of his own money into the race.

    In Michigan, meanwhile, Republicans selected former Rep. Pete Hoekstra to oppose Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in November. Democratic Rep. John Conyers staved off a primary challenge in a slightly redrawn district to advance to November’s election, when he will be strongly favored to win a 25th consecutive term in Congress. Rep. Gary Peters defeated Rep. Hansen Clarke in a member versus member Democratic primary also brought on by congressional redistricting.

    In another closely watched Missouri race, Rep. William Lacy Clay defeated Rep. Russ Carnahan in a showdown of two of Missouri’s most prominent Democratic families. The two were also drawn together because of congressional redistricting.

    Amid primary elections in four states Tuesday, Missouri’s Republican Senate primary figured to have the most national significance: The GOP needs to net four seats from Democrats to gain control of the Senate and Republicans viewed McCaskill as among their top targets this year.

    In a sign of the race to come, the candidates traded accusations of being a party extremist.

    “The choice is clear in November,” Akin said in a victory speech. “The big-spending, budget-busting, job-killing liberal or the less-spending, balanced-budget, job-creating conservative.”

    In an interview with The Associated Press, McCaskill said, “I don’t know that Missouri voters will ever have more of a contrast.” She added: “The issue here is not whether you can label him a conservative, but whether or not he is on the fringe — a very extreme candidate. I believe he is.”

    Akin, 65, who drew the backing of former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, has billed himself as a tea party supporter and has a strong conservative voting record in Congress. A former Army officer, engineer and state lawmaker, Akin first won election to the U.S. House in 2000 after narrowly winning a five-person Republican primary.

    Polls indicated that any of the three GOP contenders would stand a good chance of defeating McCaskill. She took the unusual step of airing television ads targeting all three, a tactic that reflected the uncertain nature of the GOP primary.

    In Michigan, Hoekstra enters his race against Stabenow as the underdog. Stabenow, the chairwoman of the Senate’s agriculture committee, is seeking a third term and has enjoyed a steady lead in polls.

    On the Democratic side in Michigan, Conyers defeated state Sen. Glenn Anderson. Conyers, who has had few serious primary challengers since first winning election in 1965, is expected to win the seat easily. Republican Harry Sawicki ran unopposed in the GOP primary.

    In Washington state, Democrat Suzan DelBene advanced to take on Republican John Koster in the newly drawn 1st Congressional District. The seat is open after Democratic Rep. Jay Inslee resigned to run for governor. Inslee and Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna both advanced in the state’s gubernatorial primary, setting the election for November.

    The Kansas primary was defined by a fight between the state GOP’s conservative wing and its more moderate elements. Conservative Republican challengers had unseated six GOP moderates in the Kansas Senate and led two others, improving their chances of reshaping the Legislature and ending a check on the political right’s agenda.

  260. Obama: Destroyer of Non-Union Pensions

    Add another burgeoning Obama administration scandal to the pile of scandals afflicting this administration. The Daily Caller’s Matthew Boyle is reporting that they have obtained a series of emails showing the U.S. Treasury Department, with Timothy Geithner in the lead, “was the driving force” behind terminating the pensions of 20,000 salaried retirees at Delphi, one of the world’s largest auto parts manufacturing companies. The move was made during the Chrysler/GM auto bailout of 2009, and it appears the sole motivation behind it was crassly political: these particular Delphi retirees were not members of an organized labor union. Delphi’s unionized workers ”saw their pensions topped off and made whole.”

    The Caller notes that the emails “contradict sworn testimony, in federal court and before Congress, given by several Obama administration figures,” and also “indicate that the administration misled lawmakers and the courts about the sequence of events surrounding the termination of those non-union pensions, and that administration figures violated federal law.”

    In July, UAW negotiator Ron Bloom, former Treasury official and task force legal adviser Matthew Feldman and former task force member Harry Wilson, all of whom were appointed by President Obama to his Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry, appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s Subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs. Prior to that hearing they had refused to cooperate for over a year with a congressionally mandated investigation by Christy Romero, the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The likely reason they did so: Romero had no subpoena power.

    During the hearing they were asked–under oath–what role the task force played regarding pensions. All three men dodged many questions from the Committee, but eventually Bloom and Feldman insisted the task force was nothing more than a neutral “facilitator” of decisions made entirely by other entities. They did this despite the fact that the Committee had two emails written by Feldman, one saying he was convinced GM would “rubber stamp” the administration’s preferences on the deal–and the second saying he had discussed the deal with the White House.

    Boyle corroborates White House involvement, having unearthed an email chain between Feldman and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) staffer Joseph House indicating the PBGC “believed it needed to clear decisions and action plans through senior administration officials,” despite the reality that PBGC’s charter calls for independent representation of private-sector pensioners. In fact, federal labor law makes PBGC ”the only government entity that is legally empowered to initiate termination of a pension or make any official movements toward doing so.”

    Furthermore, an email sent by House to several fellow staffers, as well as David Burns, then a principal at the finance restructuring firm Greenhill & Co., and Bradley Robins, Greenhill’s head of Financing Advisory and Restructuring for North America, is particularly damning. In it he reveals that Feldman “reported that he has made progress discussing our proposal with a number of key folks in Treasury and at [the] White House, but he has not yet wrapped up his coordination. He indicated that there is an 8 am call tomorrow that he’ll use to close the communication-loop, and he’s confident he’ll have a fully-vetted Treasury view after that call.”

    Feldman has not responded to Daily Caller requests for comment. But Treasury spokesman Matt Anderson insists that “termination of the Delphi salaried pension plan was made by the PBGC in accordance with its standard procedures and applicable laws–not by Treasury,” he wrote, responding to the Caller in an email. “Although the Delphi bankruptcy was very difficult for its employees and retirees, the actions Treasury took to support the American auto industry helped save more than a million American jobs during a period of economic crisis.”

    Other emails contradict Anderson. An email dated Thursday, April 2, 2009, shows House discussing a meeting he and his PBGC staffers anticipated attending the next day with the entire auto bailout team. House emailed Karen Morris and Michael Rae, saying that the “agenda” for Friday’s meeting “is everything–lead off with Chrysler, then we’ll get into GM/Delphi.”

    Harry Reid and Alinsky’s Thirteenth Rule

    Virginia State Sen. L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth), as quoted in The Washington Post, claims that Gov. Mitt Romney’s rise in the polls is the result of racism. In the same newspaper, Opinion Writer Harold Meyerson asks, “What happens if GOP’s voter suppression works?”

    These are just two of the most recent examples of liberals taking the truth and flipping it upside down. Consider: Only a liberal can see disagreement with a Marxist president as racist and a program to discourage voter fraud as inappropriate vote suppression.

    I sometimes wonder if they really believe their own, ah, let’s call it rhetoric. Importantly, however, these absurd allegations should not surprise us. Indeed, Saul Alinsky advised his followers in Rules for Radicals:

    RULE 13: “Confound the enemy with allegations he cannot possibly disprove.” Whenever possible, turn the enemy in on himself. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety, and confusion. (Watch how organizations flail helplessly when blindsided by irrelevant arguments they cannot refute.)

    Astute readers will note that Alinsky only published twelve rules. The thirteenth is my creation. Yet, does anyone doubt the tactic being employed?

    Take the claim that disagreement with the Marxist constitutes racism. “Look,” a good friend of mine argued, “there was no Tea Party until Obama was elected; Obama’s African-American; so the Tea Party is racist.”

    He said it with a straight face.

    “It’s perfect logic,” he argued, speaking from his heart. And the man is no dummy. Really, he isn’t! Actually, he is quite a nice guy. I like him very much. We even discuss politics without coming to blows (at least we were able to avoid blows in the past. We shall see what he thinks of me after reading my just-published conservative manifesto/novel and this article!).

    The amazing thing is that no amount of persuasion could move him, even when I pointed out what liberal-tilted Wikipedia thinks of his logic:

    Post hoc ergo propter hoc, Latin for “after this, therefore because of this[,]” is a logical fallacy (of the questionable cause variety) that states, “Since that event followed this one, that event must have been caused by this one.” … The fallacy is in coming to a conclusion based solely on the order of events, rather than taking into account other factors that might rule out the connection. (Emphasis in original)

    Like a good liberal, my friend replied, “Okay, but this!” with the following cite (of course from the same paragon of authority):

    Occam’s razor (… Latin lex parsimoniae) is the law of parsimony, economy, or succinctness. It is a principle urging one to select from among competing hypotheses, that which makes the fewest assumptions.

    So, obviously, my friend is saying, between my hypothesis that Americans object to Obama because he is a Marxist and his, that Americans object to Obama because he is African-American, the latter involves fewer assumptions (in his mind) and therefore is right.

    Regrettably, my friend did not read what even his beloved Wikipedia said about Occam’s razor:

    Occam’s razor is used to adjudicate between theories that have already passed “theoretical scrutiny” tests, and which are equally well-supported [sic] by the evidence. (Emphasis supplied, omitting citation)

    Clearly, there is no evidentiary support — none whatsoever — for the notion that the Tea Party is racist. To the point, any racist rearing his head would be quickly expelled with great fanfare. There is encyclopedic evidence, on the other hand, supporting conservatives’ abhorrence to Marxism quite independent of any racial component.

    But, note something else about Occam’s razor — something very cunning indeed:

    The aim of appeals to simplicity in such contexts seem to be more about shifting the burden of proof…. Alan Baker, “Simplicity,” Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, (2004)

    Well surprise, surprise. “Shifting the burden of proof” brings us right back to Alinsky Rule Thirteen and our feeling that we must defend against allegations we cannot possibly disprove.

    The problem is an overwhelmingly leftist media that allows, defends, and even intentionally propagates these perversions of logic and common sense. Shills like Lucas and Meyerson would merit little more than a mention (and that to expose the stratagem) in a world of neutral, honest, press coverage. In a world right side up, that is.

    Consider this upside down situation: A federal government refuses to protect its national borders and a state, overrun with illegals, is forced to enact, but is blocked from enforcing, laws aimed at doing exactly that which the federal government was formed to do, sworn to do — but is not doing. Then, not satisfied with themselves, liberals denominated Arizona’s activity — this attempt at self-preservation — as “racial profiling”!

    We have seen this logic before. If the police make an arrest on the grounds of being illegally in Arizona, and the suspect is Hispanic, then clearly the arrest was made on the basis of race.

    How can this be disproved if the person is Hispanic? We might argue that the initial stop was made for a traffic violation or whatever, with the officer then developing a suspicion that the person is not here legally (perhaps the person lacks a state-issued driver’s license). But we cannot prove the additional inquiry about citizenship was not made on the basis of race. Given two options, that the additional inquiry was made on the basis of a missing driver’s license or on the basis of race, the media will broadcast the latter.

    Here are the questions: Why do we need to prove race is not the motivating factor in our opposition to Obama and in Arizona’s defense of its borders? Why can’t we just speak the truth and let common sense prevail?

    The answer, of course, is the leftist media. The drumbeat assuring us that the emperor is fully clothed is incessant, omnipresent, and still, all too effective.

    Here’s another example recently discussed at American Thinker by Jerry Philipson.

    Dearborn, Michigan, hosts an annual Arab festival that has begun to attract Christian protesters. In 2010, fulfilling a prophesy in my novel, four Christians were arrested for doing nothing more than handing out Christian literature. At this year’s festival, different and more strident Christians appeared with signs and slogans that offended Muslims. Chastened by a civil lawsuit in which the four arrested Christians were awarded more than $103,000 in legal fees for false arrest, this time the police did not immediately object to the new, more strident protestors. However, once irate Arabs begin to throw hundreds of rocks, bottles, eggs, stones, and other objects, striking and injuring many of the Christians, it was the Christians who were threatened with arrest! Dearborn police told the Christians:

    Part of the reason they are throwing things is you tell them stuff that enrages them.

    Again, note the logic. Muslims were not rioting until Christians showed up with offensive signs. Rocks and bottles were thrown at, and hit, Christians. Therefore, it’s the Christians who are disturbing the peace.

    The sane want to shake their heads at yet another example of tortured logic that has the effect of shifting the burden of proof. The illegal acts were being carried out by the Arabs at the festival — not by the Christians protesting Islam. One would think the police would have sought to explain to the rioters that in America we have a First Amendment which, except as noted below, allows precisely this type of protest. Instead, just the opposite occurred.

    Indeed, by ushering the Christians away under threat of arrest, the rioters were given a very big lesson in American civics. They were taught about a little known addendum to our First Amendment, applicable at least in Dearborn, Michigan:

    Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble; provided, however, the right to commit Illegal acts against people who offend shall not be infringed.

    Bet you missed that in government class, didn’t you?

(now bancrupkt), the FCC is all Obots, the ATT deal was not rejected on merit, Market TIcker did a suberb job on exposing how the people on the FCC who were Obots had major contributions from Obot donors pushing for no deal on this merger.

    Normally I don’t like when corporations get bigger, but this deal would have opened up many smaller industries to more competition, more growth, more jobs.

    FAIRMONT, W.Va.—After giving then-Sen. Barack Obama a full-throttled endorsement in the 2008 presidential election, the United Mine Workers of America has decided not to endorse either Obama or the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, in 2012.

    “As of right now, we’ve elected to stay out of this election,” said Mike Caputo, a UMWA official and a democratic member of the West Virginia House of Delegates. “Our members right now have indicated to stay out of this race, and that’s why we’ve done that…. I don’t think quite frankly that coalfield folks are crazy about either candidate.”

    Both candidates are trying to prove otherwise to voters in coal-intensive swing states. Earlier this week the Obama campaign released in Ohio the first coal-issue ad of this cycle, claiming that Romney has flip-flopped his position on coal. The ad includes comments that Romney made as Massachusetts governor in 2003 standing in front of a coal plant, saying that he wouldn’t support jobs that kill people.

    For his part, Romney is claiming Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is waging a war on coal with a slew of regulations.

    The 54-year-old Caputo, who grew up across the street from a coal plant near Fairmont in central West Virginia and has been in the coal industry virtually his whole life, said he couldn’t remember a time UMWA did not endorse a presidential candidate. Caputo is a vice president on the UMWA’s International Executive Board.

    “It’s unusual,” he said during an interview at UMWA’s Fairmont office. Caputo, who describes himself as a “hard-core democrat,” intends to vote for Obama. “I’m loyal to my party,” he said.

    David Kameras, a UMWA spokesman based at the union’s headquarters in Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C., said UMWA has not officially completed its endorsement selection decisions for the 2012 election and expects to do so by about mid-September. In 2008, UMWA endorsed Obama in May of that year.

    “Our members count on coal-fired power plants and burning of coal to keep jobs,” Caputo said. “We’re a very democratic union and we try to listen to the rank and file. They’ve sent a clear message that they’re not supportive of the environmental rules that are being put in place.”
