Dorothy Rodham, the mother of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has died at 92. Clinton had canceled a trip to London and Istanbul to stay with her mother, who had become ill.

Rodham died shortly after midnight, the Clinton family said in a statement.

“Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself,” the statement said. “She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was – a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.”

  2. My condolences to Hillary and her family. By all accounts she was very close to her mom. The statement by the family reflects that extraordinary women produce extraordinary daughters. Kudos to you Dorothy Rodham for being such an exceptional mother, grandmother and role model.

  3. Hillary is a person of great faith and courage instilled in her by her parents. Her mom is the one who taught her to never quit and never give up.We’re with you and your family Hillary. RIP Mrs D. Rodham!

    Hillary Rodham Clinton’s mother dies

Our condolences to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose mother passed away this morning.

Dorothy Rodham, often credited by her daughter for her success in public life, was 92.

“She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was,” said a statement from the Clinton family: “A warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.”

The former first lady had canceled a planned State Department trip to Europe to be with her mother.

Mrs. Rodham is also survived by her son-in-law, former president Bill Clinton.

    The funeral will be private.

In an obituary, The Washington Post described Mrs. Rodham as “a suburban Chicago homemaker who endured a devastating childhood and served as an inspiration to her daughter, Hillary Rodham Clinton, one of the most accomplished women in U.S. history:”

Mrs. Rodham spent decades as a familiar but unflashy presence alongside her daughter, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and son-in-law, Bill Clinton.

She accompanied them to Arkansas, where Bill Clinton was governor, and then to Washington as the Clinton family fortunes rose. Sturdy and down-to-earth, Mrs. Rodham was known among family friends for her sense of humor and curiosity, traits she passed on to her eldest child at an early age. Later in life, she grew close to her grandchildren, especially Chelsea.

Mrs. Rodham never worked outside the home, raising three children in the suburban enclave of Park Ridge, Ill., under the watchful eye of her husband, a conservative Republican who owned a drapery-making business.

In a restrictive household dominated by its patriarch, Mrs. Rodham funneled ambition and a passion for learning to her only daughter, who has long credited her mother with giving her the tools — and toughness — to enter politics.

During her presidential campaign in 2008, Hillary Clinton said she owed her inspiration to one person: “My mother, who never got a chance to go to college, who had a very difficult childhood, but who gave me a belief that I could do whatever I set my mind.”

Dorothy Howell was born June 4, 1919, in Chicago, the eldest of two daughters of Edwin Howell Jr., a firefighter, and Della Murray.

Her parents’ marriage turned violent. After their divorce in the late 1920s, they sent their daughters — Dorothy and Isabelle — alone on a train to California to live with their paternal grandparents. They were severe and unpredictable disciplinarians.

The full statement from the Clinton family:

Dorothy Howell Rodham was born in Chicago on June 4, 1919, and died shortly after midnight on November 1, 2011 in Washington, D.C., surrounded by her family.

Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself. She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was — a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Dorothy is and always will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Clinton; her sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh Rodham and Maria Rodham and Tony Rodham and Megan Rodham; her grandchildren, Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky, Zachary Rodham, Fiona Rodham and Simon Rodham.

She leaves behind many friends from all stages and places in her life, friends from California she met in high school, friends from Little Rock and Washington with whom she explored the world, the people who were first her doctors and then became her friends at George Washington Hospital, to the people she met through her children and grandchildren who became as much her friend as theirs.

To honor Dorothy, her family will hold a private celebration of her life for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers and in line with what Dorothy would have wanted, the family have asked that any one who would want to do so would make a donation in Dorothy’s memory to George Washington Hospital (http://www.gwhospital.com/Donations) where she received excellent care and made terrific friends over many years; to the Heifer Project (http://www.heifer.org/), her Christmas gift of choice in 2010 and an organization dear to her heart; or to a local organization meaningful to the giver that helps neglected and mistreated children, a blight Dorothy was determined to remedy until her last day because she knew too well the pain too many children suffer.

Her family is and will be forever grateful for the gift of Dorothy’s life and for the memories they will treasure forever.

  5. and finally, a more in-depth review of Mrs. Rodham’s life from the New York Times

    November 1, 2011

Dorothy Rodham, Mother of Hillary Clinton, Dies at 92

    By ROBERT D. McFADDEN

Dorothy Rodham, the mother of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and a strong influence in the life of the former first lady, senator from New York and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, died on Tuesday in Washington. She was 92.

Her death was announced in a statement by her family. Mrs. Clinton had canceled a planned trip to London and Istanbul to be at her mother’s side.

While she stayed in the background, occasionally appearing in public and rarely giving interviews, Mrs. Rodham was credited by her daughter with giving her a love of the higher learning she never had, a curiosity about a larger world she had not seen, and a will to persevere, about which she knew a great deal.

Her own childhood had been Dickensian — she was abandoned by dysfunctional, divorced parents at the age of 8 in Chicago; sent unsupervised on a cross-country train with a younger sister to live with unwelcoming grandparents in California; escaping at 14 into the adult world of the Depression as a $3-a-week nanny.

On her own, she attended high school and became a good student, although her job left little time for other activities. But her employers were kind to her, and she had two memorable teachers. College proved to be out of the question, but she got a job as a secretary in Chicago. And after years of lonely struggle, she married a gruff traveling salesman and settled into a life of cooking, cleaning and raising three children.

In her autobiography, “Living History” (Simon & Schuster, 2003), Mrs. Clinton recalled her mother’s hardships. “I thought often of my own mother’s neglect and mistreatment at the hands of her parents and grandparents, and how other caring adults filled the emotional void to help her,” she wrote.

Mrs. Clinton recalled her as a sensitive and caring mother, a beacon of strength in the family, offering intellectual stimulation and teaching her children to be calm and resolute. “I’m still amazed at how my mother emerged from her lonely early life as such an affectionate and levelheaded woman,” she added.

Dorothy Emma Howell was born on June 4, 1919, in Chicago, the oldest of two children of Edwin John Howell Jr., a firefighter, and the former Della Murray. Her sister, Isabelle, was born in 1924. They lived as boarders in a house with four other families. The parents fought often and sometimes violently, according to Cook County records of the time.

Mr. Howell sued for divorce, accusing his wife of abandonment and abuse of the children. She did not show up in court; her sister, Frances Czeslawski, testified against her, and Mr. Howell was granted the divorce and custody of the children in 1927. But, unwilling or unable to care for them, he put them on a train to Alhambra, Calif., where his parents, Edwin Sr. and Emma, lived.

The grandparents were ill-prepared to raise the girls. Mr. Howell, a laborer for the city, left the task to his wife, whom Mrs. Rodham recalled as a strict woman in black dresses who discouraged visitors and parties and berated and punished them for small infractions. When she discovered that Dorothy had gone trick-or-treating one Halloween, she ordered her confined to her room for a year, except to go to school.

In 1934 Dorothy moved out and became a housekeeper, cook and nanny for a family in San Gabriel. She was given room, board and $3 a week. But the employers were kind and encouraged her to read, and Dorothy enrolled at Alhambra High School, where she joined the Scholarship Club and the Spanish Club.

Years later, Mrs. Rodham recalled two teachers: a Miss Drake, who taught speech and drama, and a Miss Zellhoefer, who taught her to write. “She taught English and was very strict,” Mrs. Rodham wrote in a book marking the school’s centennial in 1998. “We came from her class with respect for her and a solid ground in English. What made her special was her desire that we develop critical thinking.”

After graduating in 1937, Dorothy returned to Chicago at the request of her mother, Della, who had remarried. The girl was told that her mother’s new husband had offered to help pay her college expenses, and Dorothy hoped to enroll at Northwestern University. But when she got to Chicago, she discovered that the offer had evaporated, and that her mother actually wanted her to work as her housekeeper.

“I’d hoped so hard that my mother would love me that I had to take the chance and find out,” Mrs. Rodham said long after that wrenching sentimental journey. “When she didn’t, I had nowhere else to go.”

She found secretarial work in Chicago. In 1942 she married Hugh Ellsworth Rodham, eight years her senior, who became the owner of a small drapery-fabric business. They moved to Park Ridge, in suburban Chicago, where their children — Hillary, Hugh and Tony — were born and raised. They survive her, as do four grandchildren. Mrs. Rodham pushed her children to stand up for themselves, Mrs. Clinton recalled. Once, when she was 4, she went home in tears after a neighborhood girl bullied her. “You have to face things and show them you’re not afraid,” her mother told her. If she was hit again, Mrs. Rodham advised, “hit her back.”

“She later told me she watched from behind the curtain as I squared my shoulders and marched across the street,” Mrs. Clinton recalled. “I returned a few minutes later, glowing with victory.”

As a freshman at Wellesley College, Hillary called home to express doubts about her ability to stay on and compete. “You can’t quit,” her mother told her. “You’ve got to see through what you’ve started.”

Mr. and Mrs. Rodham moved to Little Rock, Ark., in 1987, to be near Mrs. Clinton, then the wife of the Arkansas governor, and their granddaughter Chelsea. Mrs. Rodham took college courses in psychology and other subjects, but earned no degree. Mr. Rodham died in 1993. Mrs. Rodham kept her home in Little Rock after Bill Clinton became president, although she visited the White House often.

Featured in a film before Mr. Clinton’s acceptance speech at the 1996 Democratic National convention, she vouched for the second-term nominee. “Everybody knows,” she said, “there is only one person in the world who can really tell the truth about a man, and that’s his mother-in-law.”

Mrs. Rodham, who had not traveled abroad extensively, accompanied Chelsea on a trip to Jodhpur, India, in 2000. After Mrs. Clinton joined the Senate in 2001, Mrs. Rodham spent time at her Washington home. The Clintons bought her a condominium near their home in Chappaqua, N.Y., in 2003. After 2006, she lived mostly at Mrs. Clinton’s home in Washington.

She was in the Senate gallery when Mrs. Clinton took the oath for her second term in January 2007, and appeared in Iowa and New Hampshire early in the 2008 presidential campaign. And when she quit the race in June 2008, Mrs. Clinton stood with her mother and her daughter at the National Building Museum in Washington, their hands raised together in a memorable three-generation tableau.

Dorothy Rodham dies at 92; mother of Hillary Clinton

Her compassion, humor and toughness as a stay-at-home mother in the 1950s profoundly influenced her daughter.

Dorothy Rodham, whose compassion, humor and toughness as a stay-at-home mother in 1950s suburban Chicago profoundly influenced her daughter Hillary Clinton and masked her own difficult childhood, has died. She was 92.

Rodham died early Tuesday in Washington, D.C., according to a statement by the William J. Clinton Foundation. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton canceled a trip to London and Istanbul to be with her mother.

Rodham was born in Chicago on June 4, 1919, to Edwin Howell, a fireman, and his wife, Della.

Her parents fought violently, according to the records from their 1927 divorce, and neither paid much attention to Dorothy or her younger sister, Isabelle. After the couple divorced, the children were sent west by train to live with their paternal grandparents in Alhambra.

“On the four-day journey,” Clinton recalled in her 2003 memoir “Living History,” “eight-year-old Dorothy was in charge of her three-year-old sister.”

Life in California was no easier than it had been in Chicago, Clinton wrote.

Dorothy was treated cruelly and isolated socially; after she was caught trick-or-treating with friends, her grandmother declared that she would be confined to her room for a year (the punishment ended after several months when the grandmother’s sister found out about it, Clinton wrote).

She left her grandparents’ home at 14 and moved in with another family as a nanny while attending Alhambra High School. She planned to attend college in California until her mother summoned her back to Chicago, promising to help her pay for her education there. It turned out, Clinton wrote, that the newly remarried mother only wanted a housekeeper.

“I’d hoped so hard that my mother would love me that I had to take the chance and find out,” Clinton quoted her mother as saying. “When she didn’t, I had nowhere else to go.”

She moved into her own apartment and got an office job where she met Hugh Rodham, a traveling salesman. They were married in 1942 and five years later Hillary was born, the first of the couple’s three children.

The Rodhams’ two-story brick house became a hub for the neighborhood’s many children. Ernest Ricketts, 64, who was one of those kids, said Rodham seemed to relish her time as a stay-at-home mom.

But she could be tough too. As one story goes, Rodham once gave her daughter permission to punch a girl who had been bullying her. She did, and her bully problems were over.

“One of the things that Dorothy said was that Hillary always had the capacity, the confidence and tenacity to stare the devil down,” Ricketts said.

Clinton, who in her high school days was an enthusiastic conservative in the mold of her Republican father, gradually drifted to the left, causing her to fall out with her father, according to some of her biographers. That, in turn, brought her closer to her mother, according to Carl Bernstein’s 2007 book, “A Woman in Charge.”

“Dorothy is the person who shaped Hillary more than any other, and there is no way to see Dorothy and not see how she fashioned her daughter,” Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a Hollywood producer and close Clinton friend, said in Bernstein’s book.

In 1987, Rodham and her husband left Chicago to join Hillary and her husband, Bill Clinton, in Arkansas. Rodham’s husband died in 1993, and she later moved to Washington, joining her daughter on the campaign trail during her quest for the presidency in 2008.

In 2008, I drove Hillary’s mother to and from the airport to a rally in a one of the cities in IOWA. She was such a nice person. She was proud of not only Hillary, but her siblings also. She also was very fond of her grandaughter, and Mark, who at the time were not married. She said they came on the weekend often to visit her. I am glad that they go married before she died.

Mrs. Dorothy Rodham, it was an honor to have met you.

It was just a flook. I had brought another women and 3 college students to work the caucus, and we had rented a American Van to make the trip. In the HRC campaign office, they said that they needed an American car for her motorcade, and my hand went up. I thought I was going to just watch the process. Near the time of the plane landing they said they wanted to put HRC in my car, but I could not drive. To compensate, they would let me drive one of their cars, and they would put HRCs mother with me. I thought I was dreaming. However, I was not, and it was a wonderful experience, I will never forget.

  24. NMfan – wow.

I have only seen the Big Dawg. Missed Hillary in Denver, every where I went.
It must have been difficult knowing Hillary was in your car but you didn’t get to be there with her.

  25. I had errands to attend to today in the Scranton area. I kept wondering if Hillary’s father was buried there. And I decided it was appropriate for me to don my Hillary hat once again. No one commented one way or another about it as I went from store to store.
As soon as I arrived home and unpacked the car, I checked wikipedia and it has these details of Mr. Rodham’s death: Hugh Rodham died in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 7, 1993, three weeks after suffering a stroke and less than three months after Bill Clinton’s inauguration as U.S. president. Following a private memorial service in Little Rock attended by the Clintons, he was buried in the Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton, Pennsylvania, in a private funeral also attended by the Clinton family.

Perhaps DHR will repose in rest beside him. If you hear anything of her final resting place, please let me know. tnx.

Came down with a nasty cold, took my iPad to bed with me and spent my idle hours looking into Americans Elect. Answered 200 questions, but after the first few it became apparent they all were basically the same few questions. After each answer, you are shown how your answer compares with the rest of the country (how do they know what the rest of the country thinks? I mean, the whole country favors open borders, allowing illegal immigrants the same privileges as legals? I don’t think so) Is the purpose of this process to change the way the weak-minded view the issues? – conform to more “popular” views of the issues? I went through this grilling, anyway, but at the end, I went to the feedback section and wrote this note: “Why are you asking these same questions over and over? Why isn’t once enough to tell you what you want to know or say you want to know about our opinions? The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 20% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -22 (see trends).

For the full month of October, the president’s Approval Index rating fell to the lowest level yet measured for this president. Just 17% now believe the U.S. is generally heading in the right direction. Yesterday, President Obama mocked House Republicans for passing a resolution affirming “In God We Trust” as our national motto. See the president suggest that God wants the nation to help itself by putting people back to work.

Orwell’s 1984 was a simplistic warning — the real Big Brother is more varied and more subtly invasive.

BTW at the risk of bringing on a lengthy harangue from TD, have you seen the Fox article re the UN using climate data researched by students very young to the field of climatology? Analysis of climate monitoring is a very iffy science because of so many slippery variables and requires not only education but years of experience ……… oi, veh.

  45. Just had a call from The Republican Presidential Coalition (Dick Morris) which is collecting $ to run an ad (full page I think, maybe in USA Today – I really have to settle down and pay better attention) The ad will read: quit lying: you are who we thought you were.

I gave big to McCain/Palin (relatively speaking) and I seem to be on every Republican list there is. For the moment, it is fun.

  46. Yesterday near my apartment, in a good area the Occupy protesters showed up. They were holding signs on all four corners of a big intersection but were standing nicely on the sidewalks. They wanted so badly for people to ‘honk’ in solidarity with their 99% stuff. These were not pot smoking kids, these were the same type of adults that were in the Tea Party. This one, gray haired woman tried to get me to respond while I was stuck at a red light. Too bad my car was not close enough to the curb to talk to these folks. I would have been more prepared if I had known they were going to show up, with a sign. I wanted to tell them that even though this woman was one of the 99%, this was THEIR FAULT for voting for this community organizing liar. I only hope some of them bothered to watch me drive past them, for in my rear window was a Hillary 2008 and a Hillary 2012 bumper sticker.

    AMEN.

  48. These were not pot smoking kids, these were the same type of adults that were in the Tea Party.

    ================

Quite a lot of that age are showing up, some of them are Tea Party also. Both groups are against the banks that got bailouts. The Tea Party took the political route: OWS is inspiring people to take their money out of those banks.

But why do you think these older people voted for Obama?

  49. Pulled these remarks from amusing yet pointed article on PJMedia titled: “Barry, Honey, Let’s do Talk About Jobs”

–Now, you’re out on the campaign trail and you want to talk about your Democrat-stalled “jobs bill” – the Son of Stimulus? You’re serious about that?
    Well, bless your heart.
But Barry honey, since you brought it up again, let’s do talk about jobs.

–You’ve been traveling around campaigning on that big, black, foreign-made bus that looks like a harbinger of death come riding into America’s heartland. And on every stop in every hamlet, you say you want to talk about jobs, jobs, jobs, and jobs.

–“ your presidency has now come to be defined as the Obamaville that finally replaced Hooverville in the American political lexicon.” That’s not a good thing, honey.”

  50. Analysis of climate monitoring is a very iffy science because of so many slippery variables and requires not only education but years of experience

    ===================

Pls remember that when you see polluters’ lists of “X number of scientists doubt global warming.” Because most of the “scientists” on those lists are not in climate science at all.

  52. ‘Oakland is burning’

    ===============

Well, they set a bonfire in the middle of a street. Another story claimed someone was throwing molotov cocktails, but didn’t report any resulting fires.

  53. Just made my sign to deal with the Occupy protesters that are going to build up the protest in my town:

If you would have voted for Hillary,
we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Take your protest to DC where it belongs!

  54. TDO
But why do you think these older people voted for Obama?

    ——–
My guess is that most of these folks did vote for Barry. Why do I think that?

!- Because, if they voted for anyone else, they would be screaming that it was Obama’s fault.

2- Only the people that still think he is doing a good job are not seeing that it was HIS ‘stimulus’ that did nothing but pay off his large donors

3- HIS crappy healthcare plan that costs taxpayers up the waaazoooo and gives us worse care

4- HIS policy that gave the 1% the extend Bush taxcuts

5- HIS policy to bail out the banks and auto industry

    Need I go on………..

  55. Hillary wins big in 2012

    By Brent Budowsky – 11/02/11

This column is dedicated to the late Dorothy Rodham, a very proud mom and grandma who did good in the world.

The true political state of the union is best revealed in a recent poll in Time magazine that found that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton would win an epic and possibly realigning landslide in a presidential election against any Republican candidate.

First, the numbers. Then, the reasons.

In the Time poll, Clinton would defeat Mitt Romney by a whopping 55 percent to 38 percent. She would defeat Rick Perry by an even more devastating 58 percent to 32 percent.

These are realigning numbers. In this hypothetical match-up, the Clinton landslide would be so huge, and the Republican defeat so catastrophic, that Democrats would almost certainly regain control of the House and maintain control of the Senate.

In the Time poll, President Obama also defeats any candidate in the Republican field, though by far smaller margins than Clinton. Anyone who suggests that “Obama is toast” should not be taken seriously.

I believe the president, whom I support, would be a slight favorite in a close election against Romney, and could win a landslide against other Republicans, who have not come close to crossing the threshold of being serious contenders for commander in chief.

The lesson of the Time poll, which I believe would be replicated in other polls, though possibly not as dramatically, is this:

The next great realignment in American politics is very likely to be a Democratic realignment. It cannot be a Republican realignment, because the GOP has moved so far to the extreme right that it is now far outside the mainstream of American opinion.

While it is true that Hillary Clinton’s huge popularity is partly due to her being removed from partisan politics as secretary of State, there are other powerful messages for both parties in her soaring popularity.

Hillary Clinton represents the brand of the Democratic Party embodied by traditional Democratic presidents in hard economic times. She is identified with the great prosperity of the Bill Clinton presidency. But there are other powerful forces at work:

Hillary Clinton is part of what I once called “The Female Century.” Throughout the nation and around the world there is an epochal movement toward true equality for women.

By contrast, some Republicans slander Planned Parenthood. Many Republicans aggressively oppose pay equity for women. Congressional Republicans launch hostile attacks on countless programs that benefit women.

I have written before, and will write again, that a tidal wave of support from female voters will be a powerful factor helping the president and Democrats in 2012.

This “woman power” that benefits Hillary Clinton with women now benefits her with many men as well. In an economy where many view the 1 percent as unfairly gaining at the expense of the other 99 percent, Hillary Clinton is seen as a fighter. She never gives up. She is a voice for those who feel disempowered, including white male blue-collar workers, blacks who feel trapped in joblessness and injustice, Hispanics who are told their dreams can no longer come true and seniors who trust Hillary Clinton as their protector.

Hillary Clinton will not run for president in 2012. She will be one of the greatest assets of President Obama, who had the good judgment to name her secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton disproves the notion that America is a rightist nation. If the 2016 election were held today, America would not turn to the right, it would turn to Clinton.

In the eyes of voters, Hillary Clinton is the North Star of an America where Democrats act like Democrats and where every woman deserves equal pay, every worker deserves a job and nobody should be left behind.

The great source of Clinton’s strength is that the dreams of women are the dreams for all. Dorothy Rodham was one great mom who raised one great daughter. If Democrats remember why, they will do just fine in 2012.

Budowsky was an aide to former Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas) and former Rep. Bill Alexander (D-Tenn.), then chief deputy majority whip of the House. He holds an LL.M. in international financial law from the London School of Economics.

  56. Actor Michael Douglas backs US State Department budget

    November 3, 2011

WASHINGTON — Veteran Hollywood actor Michael Douglas on Thursday defended the US State Department against budget-cutting efforts in Congress as he said diplomacy is cheaper than war.

During a visit to the State Department, Douglas, a board member of the Ploughshares Fund, which fights the spread of nuclear weapons, said diplomacy is good value for money in tough economic times.

“People don’t take the time to understand just how important diplomacy is. It takes a long time, it’s quiet but it’s certainly a lot cheaper than a war,” the two-time Oscar winner told reporters.

“I think Congress is a way out of line in terms of the amount of budget (cuts) that they are talking about,” Douglas said amid fears that billions of dollars could be cut.

“I hope that sound minds and logical minds will prevail,” he said as he pointed out that State Department spending and all foreign aid account for only one percent of the total US federal budget.

Douglas praised the diplomacy that led to the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between Russia and the United States that entered force in February.

The treaty slashes existing warhead ceilings by 30 percent over the next 10 years and limits each side to 700 deployed long-range missiles and heavy bombers.

The actor meanwhile expressed concern about Iran’s uranium enrichment program as well as about the risk that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons could fall into the wrong hands.

The State Department said Douglas was visiting State Department officials to discuss the Ploughshares Fund’s nonproliferation and arms control efforts and its relation to President Barack Obama?s Prague Agenda.

During a speech in Prague in April 2009, Obama pledged to lead a quest for a world purged of nuclear weapons and denounced “fatalism” over proliferation.

  58. Bibi gets pist:

Israel’s prime minister has ordered an investigation into alleged leaks of plans to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, it has been reported.

According to the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida, the main suspects are the former heads of the Mossad and the Shin Bet, respectively Israel’s foreign and domestic intelligence agencies.

Netanyahu is said to believe that the two, Meir Dagan and Yuval Diskin, wanted to torpedo plans being drawn up by him and Ehud Barak, the defence minister, to hit Iranian nuclear sites. Tzipi Livni, leader of the opposition Kadima party, is also said to have been persuaded to attack Netanyahu for “adventurism” and “gambling with Israel’s national interest”.

The paper suggested that the purpose of the leaks was to prevent an attack, which had moved from the stage of discussion to implementation. “Those who oppose the plan within the security establishment decided to leak it to the media and thwart the plan,” it said.

Both Dagan and Diskin oppose military action against Iran unless all other options – primarily international diplomatic pressure and perhaps sabotage — have been exhausted. In January the recently retired Dagan, a hawk when he was running the Mossad, called an attack on Iran “the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard”.

The Kuwait paper has a track record of running stories based on apparently high-level leaks from Israeli officials.

Even well-informed Israeli observers admit to being confused about what is going on behind the scenes.

Although I also agree with this writers assessment of Hillary and who she is and what she stands for, I do not agree that the future belongs to the Dems, nor are they the party that truly supports women. I think we all understand that! The women that follow the Dem party blindly, are just that, blind. The Repubs at least appear to reach out to more women and in fact I believe have more women in elected positions.

I think both the Dem party and Repub party don’t get the American voter. I think most are fiscally conservative but socially moderate. Both parties pander to their extreme unfortunately.

NEW YORK — Vince Taylor doesn’t fit the stereotype of unkempt twentysomething protesters at the Occupy Wall Street site in Manhattan, which was clear from the homemade canvas sign he held there.
    It read: “75 AND DISGUSTED.”
Taylor, a retired economist with a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, flew across the country last Friday from his home in Mendocino, Calif., to join the Occupy Wall Street protest.
“I thought it’s important that people recognize that there are a lot of very thoughtful people in this country that identify with the Occupy Wall Street people,” Taylor said. Like many of his fellow protesters, Taylor said he was concerned with income inequality in America and corporate influence in Congress.

  72. NEW YORK (Reuters) – Barack Obama topped Forbes’ list of the world’s most powerful people in 2011, as the U.S. leader’s clout rose after the deaths of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Obama bumped Chinese President Hu Jintao from the No. 1 spot on the magazine’s annual rankings. German Chancellor Angela Merkel remained the most powerful woman at No. 4 on the list, as Europe’s largest economy continued to wield its influence over the troubled European Union. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is running again for president, was No. 2 and Hu came third as he gradually manages the transition of power to others in China. “The U.S. remains, indisputably, the most powerful nation in the world, with the largest, most innovative economy and the deadliest military,” Forbes wrote….

Call me naive three times over for not suspecting that Forbes would be impressed by killing a dictator.
Call me naive four times over for stating that Greece’s Prime Minister should be recognized by Occupy Wall Street for his desire to take the bailout decision to the people.
Then six times over for not realizing that after yesterday’s troubles, Occupy has pretty much been banished from early morning news. Had to spit out my coffee when I heard WPIX’s breaking news: There’s been an explosion in a mine in China and 4 are dead.

ACORN Officials Scramble, Firing Workers and Shredding Documents, After Exposed as Players Behind Occupy Wall Street Protests

Officials with the revamped ACORN office in New York — operating as New York Communities for Change — have fired staff, shredded reams of documents and told workers to blame disgruntled ex-employees for leaking information in an effort to explain away a FoxNews.com report last week on the group’s involvement in Occupy Wall Street protests, according to sources.

NYCC also is installing surveillance cameras and recording devices at its Brooklyn offices, removing or packing away supplies bearing the name ACORN and handing out photos of Fox News staff with a stern warning not to talk to the media, the sources said.

  74. Mrs. Smith, that is a story, like Fast & Furious, just waiting to be told. Yesterday FoxNews.com had article citing 30 congress critters who wanted to fire Holder over F&F. Cnn had an article stating that F&F did not have the scope of Watergate, Obama would probably weather it.

    http://www.breakingeconomics.com/2011/11/bill-clinton-attacks-obama-in-his-new.html

Former president Bill Clinton attacks President Barack Obama in his new book “Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government For A Strong Economy,” reports The Associated Press.

In the book, Clinton criticizes Obama for not seeking a debt ceiling increase when Democrats still controlled both houses of Congress, saying it made the country look “weak and confused.” Clinton states that Obama had the constitutional authority to do so and failed to use it.

Clinton also attacks Obama for his poor communication and strategic misfires, and says Obama failed to make a stronger case for the bailouts that banks and auto companies received, as well as the $787 billion economic stimulus program.

Clinton describes the current state of the economy as “a mess” and largely blames the Tea Party for the current anti-government sentiment.

  83. It’s going to be fun watching Bill Clinton go on news shows and voice the same criticisms in person…

Interesting timing for it isn’t it? Gotta love it…

  84. There was s story about Chicago Board of Trade iirc dropping McDonald’s job applications on OWS. Then a story saying McDonalds already had 16 applicants for each job (though previous to the OWS drop). Maybe that’s why the useless applications were given to the Board of Trade.

  85. From Brian Leubitz at Calitics:

Not-for-profit credit unions are owned by their members. These banks aren’t under pressure by Wall Street investors to maximize quarterly returns. Instead, profits go back to the members in the form of higher interest on savings and lower interest on loans, mortgages, and credit card balances.

    1. Fewer fees, more savings. The Credit Union National Association estimates that consumers save more than $6 billion a year in better rates and lower fees by using credit unions. That’s your money — who should make a profit off of it, you or your bank? — ABC News

    2. Credit cards with lower interest rates. Federal law prohibits federal credit unions from charging interest rates above 18%. Credit union customers pay, on average, 20% less in credit card interest. — Forbes

    3. Better customer service. 70% of credit union members feel that the institution put the customer’s interests ahead of the institution itself. The highest big bank, Wells Fargo, came in at a 40% positive rating. –Forbes

    4. No penalties for using or not using your money. Corporate banks routinely charge you to open a checking account, charge you if your account is dormant, charge you if your balance drops below a certain level. It’s crazy! Credit unions simply do not engage in these kinds of practices — practices that are focused on driving up quarterly profits, regardless of customer satisfaction. — MSN Money

    5. Your money stays in your community. Credit unions primarily employ people locally, and give back generously as well. Local credit unions are also more likely to give loans to local businesses, especially women- and minority-owned businesses. Since the recession began, credit unions have vastly expanded their business loan operations, which helps keep funds working in the local community. — Businessweek (Burnt Orange Report)

  86. Question: If Bill is criticizing Obama for not being more forceful enough with regards to the bank and auto bailouts plus the faux stimulus bill, then what does that say about Bill? Were these bailouts and the stimulus bill good policy or not? Apparently Bill thinks so. Me? Not so much.

I am struggling with this too, nomobama. I have a ton of questions about all the things the democrats have been doing with, at the very least, the silent affirmation of the Clintons. Sometimes I get so confused. And why does Bill Clinton dislike the tea party, why does he even bring the subject up? My first hand experience with the tea party has been positive?

  90. Were these bailouts and the stimulus bill good policy or not? Apparently Bill thinks so.

    ==================

I haven’t seen details of Bill’s view. But let’s distinguish:
    1. no bailout or help at all
    2. a trickle up bailout where the homeowners got money to pay their mortgages with, etc
    3. Obama’s actual trickle down bailout

A trickle up was Hillary’s approach with her HOLC proposal. The Clintons might still think the actual bailout was better than nothing.

  91. So much for the Jewish population and other minorities living in this mess…

Chanting ‘Russia for Russians,’ thousands of nationalists and neo-Nazis march through Moscow

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, November 4,

MOSCOW — Thousands of far-right nationalists and neo-Nazis marched through Moscow on Friday calling on ethnic Russians to “take back” their country, as resentment grows over dark-complexioned Muslim migrants from Russia’s Caucasus and the money the Kremlin sends to the restive region.

Some 5,000 people, mostly young men wearing medical masks and balaclavas, marched through a working-class neighborhood of gloomy apartment buildings on the outskirts of the capital. They chanted “Russia for Russians” and “Migrants today, occupiers tomorrow,” along with anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic slurs and obscenities.

Some raised their hands in a Nazi salute as hundreds of police officers stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the street, which was blocked to traffic.

“All Russian people are on the march — football fans, skinheads, national socialists,” said Dmitry Demushkin, a longtime activist who now leads a group called Russkiye, or Russians. “We have to show what our nation is demanding.”

Demushkin is a former leader of the Slavic Union, a neo-Nazi group that was banned last year as extremist, along with the Movement Against Illegal Migration.

Violent xenophobic groups have flourished in Russia over the past two decades. Their members kill and beat non-Slavs and anti-racism activists and crudely denounce the influx of immigrants from the Caucasus and from Central Asian countries that were once part of the Soviet Union.

Since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000, they have drawn moral support from his efforts to rebuild a strong Russian state. After two terms as president, Putin moved into the prime minister’s office, but an election in March is expected to hand him a third presidential term.

Following a clash last December between police and thousands of football fans and other extremists just outside the Kremlin walls — and an unprecedented outbreak of hate crimes — the government has taken a tougher line against the groups. But their virulent hatred is proving hard to combat.

Many Russians share the anti-migrant sentiment, and even those who would not describe themselves as racist are increasingly resentful of the hefty subsidies sent to the Caucasus, particularly to Chechnya. The money is intended to bring stability after years of war, but the region remains deeply impoverished while Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov flaunts his wealth.

“Stop feeding the Caucasus” was one of the catchphrases of Friday’s march. It was printed on banners and repeated by speakers — including popular anti-corruption whistleblower Alexander Navalny, who originally came up with the phrase.

Navalny’s description of Putin’s United Russia party as the “party of swindlers and thieves” has also stuck.

“This is our country, and we have to eradicate the crooks who suck our blood and eat our liver,” Navalny, a lawyer, yelled to the cheering crowd. “Down with United Russia! Down with the party of crooks and thieves!” he shouted.

The phrases coined by Navalny have helped to unite a broad protest movement and become so popular that both Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev have felt compelled to address the criticism and defend their policies in the Caucasus as vital to Russia’s security.

The so-called Russian March has been held annually since 2005 on a new national holiday created to replace celebrations of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

The new holiday was usurped by far-right nationalists, whose first rally in 2005 led to the shocking sight of thousands of skinheads marching through central Moscow with their hands raised in a Nazi salute and shouting obscene racist slogans.

The following year the march was banned, but nationalists marched anyway and clashed violently with police. Since 2007, the Russian March has been relegated to areas outside of the capital’s center.

Marches also took place Friday in other cities across the country, drawing hundreds of participants.

Tens of thousands of skinheads, neo-Nazis and far-right nationalists are active in Russia, according to analysts and polls. They advocate exclusive rights for ethnic Russians, who comprise two-thirds of the population of 142 million. More than 100 ethnicities account for the remaining third, including dozens of ethnic groups from the mountainous and predominantly Muslim Caucasus region.

Last year, some 320 ultranationalists were convicted of hate crimes, including several teenage gang members that stabbed or beat to death dark-skinned non-Russians, according to independent human rights watchdog Sova.

It was her reaction to what is happening to this country as promoted by the current Democratic party. I think we have every right to question what is currently going on, and to not feel comfortable with what we have witnessed. The tea party was labeled as a terrorist organization which is bullshit. My encounter with tea party activists was positive. They ate decent people who do NOT deserve such disrespect. Teahadists my a$$. There are dangerous winds blowing from the left. I, for one, am not buying their bullshit. Bill Clinton is walking a very fine line of which he better not make a misstep for he will lose people like me for good.

  96. White House Fires Back at ‘Overbroad’ Subpoena on Solyndra Documents

The White House on Friday all but refused to turn over the documents House Republicans have subpoenaed on bankrupt solar firm Solyndra, firing off a letter saying the request would put an “unreasonable burden on the president’s ability to meet his constitutional duties.”

The feisty response appears to set up a clash between congressional investigators and the White House over the sprawling probe into Solyndra’s finances and the administration’s involvement in the decision to provide the struggling company a $528 million loan with taxpayer money.

Letter From White House on Solyndra Subpoena

The following is the letter sent Nov. 4 from the White House on Republicans’ subpoena for Solyndra documents.

White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, in her letter, scolded GOP lawmakers for demanding more documents, noting the Obama administration has already turned over 85,000 pages of documents in the course of their investigation. Without explicitly refusing to comply with the subpoena, Ruemmler repeatedly described the order as “overbroad.”

“The Committee’s extremely broad request for documents — now a subpoena — is a significant intrusion on Executive Branch interests,” she wrote, saying she can only conclude the subpoena was “driven more by partisan politics than a legitimate effort to conduct a responsible investigation.”

Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, questioned what the West Wing was trying to “hide” in a response late Friday.

“We have been reasonable every step of the way in this investigation, and it is a shame that the Obama administration and House Democrats continue to put up partisan roadblocks to hide the truth from taxpayers,” he said. “Now, we need to know the White House’s role in the Solyndra debacle in order to learn the full truth about why taxpayers now find themselves a half billion dollars in the hole. The White House could have avoided the need for subpoena authorizations if they had simply chosen to cooperate.”

Though the White House has turned over thousands of documents, Republicans say the administration has not provided everything they’ve requested. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted Thursday to subpoena, and the subpoenas went out late Thursday to the White House and office of the vice president.

“Unfortunately, we had to take this step after the White House has continued to slow walk the production of documents necessary for this investigation by only releasing selected documents and records,” Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., chairman of the House panel investigating the matter, said in a statement.

The subpoena called on the White House to produce “all documents referring or relating in any way” to the Solyndra loan guarantee, as well as to investors in the company and to the company’s financial condition.

The White House said in the letter Friday that “there is no basis for such a broad request,” claiming the administration has acted in “good faith” to accommodate the requests so far.

Ruemmler said the White House is “willing” to continue working with the committee but suggested they “negotiate the scope” of the documents they want produced.

As Republicans pressed the White House for more information, new bankruptcy court documents also revealed that Solyndra executives were paid quarterly bonuses earlier this year worth up to $60,000 apiece.
