Update: Halloween and the story is Herman Cain. Well not really. The story is who leaked this story to Politico?
On the one hand Willard Mitt Romney has been leaking stories about everyone and he has the best opposition research team on the Republican side. On the other hand, this type of dirt is vintage Barack Obama. Attacks to benefit Barack Obama, based on sex, are an Axelrod specialty as we documented so long ago.
The campaign finance improprieties at Team Cain story is also an Obama style Chicago drive by shooting. It took Politico years to finally admit that our original reporting was correct and it was the Barack Obama campaign that anonymously pushed the John (“are you my daddy?”) Edwards $400 haircut story.
As we wrote below, Herman Cain’s strong card is his content of character. That is why this anonymous attack is so pernicious. Herman Cain has already strongly denied the sexual harassment claims so maybe this will go away if there is nothing at all to the story – but it is a test for Herman Cain on several levels including transparency and political acumen and durability of his support.
Herman Cain today said “I was falsely accused of sexual harassment” while at the restaurant trade association.
Cain appears to be surprised that the restaurant association settled the sexual harassment claims. There also appears to be a confidentiality agreement associated with the settlement which means that possibly even referencing the existence of such a settlement is legally difficult.
In today’s interviews Herman Cain has handled the matter well with a strong denial. There is not much more he can do.
As to the women who made the allegations it is up to them to go public or the matter will die. We hope if they are telling the truth they speak up. This is likely very difficult for them to do as they might put at risk the settlement monies they received. Of course Willard Romney, or Barack Obama – whoever is responsible for this drive-by shooting could offer a financial incentive that would negate loss of the settlement monies from 15 years ago. Let the truth prevail and whoever planted this story should also be exposed for all to see.
This is called “winning ugly.” This type of tactic wins elections, but it makes governing very difficult as the “losing” side does not forget the dirty methods employed to win.
In retrospect the rise of Herman Cain to the top ranks, if not the actual top rank, of the Republican nomination contest is easy to see. It can be summed up in one word: marketing.
Herman Cain rescued the Godfather’s Pizza chain by smart hands-on management and by “marketing strategies that worked.” That a marketing smart guy could market himself and his campaign effectively (with a simple 9-9-9 economic plan) should then come as no surprise.
But more importantly Herman Cain has displayed something that Barack Obama has never had: content of character.
Herman Cain’s character can be witnessed through his remarkable attack on Obama’s health care scam. Cain not only scorched the Obama policy but he placed it in the context of how it affects the individual who is sick – namely himself when he fought off Stage IV colon and liver cancer.
But Herman Cain’s character can also be seen in a Hillaryesque manner. In 2007 we noted that Obama’s history was shrouded in lies, lack of witnesses, and self-invented chronology from invented “autobiographies.” Hillary however had a history which could be traced in detail from kindergarten onwards.
Since the age of 10 the 65 year old Cain has attended the Antioch Baptist Church. Politically, Antioch Baptist is a church populated with “liberals.” Antioch is not however the “God Damn America” church of Jeremiah Wright on whose pews Obama squatted for more than 20 years.
It takes a lot of character to sit in a church from the age of 10, year after year, and worship as your faith teaches even though your positions are at odds with the vast majority of the congregation. Only a man of character could survive with reputation intact and respected as Herman Cain has.
Herman Cain, as Martin Luther King, Jr. advised, should be judged by the content of his character not by the color of his skin. Barack Obama race-baited his way through the many elections in 2008. Many Obama Dimocrats want to race-bait Barack Obama to reelection.
It’s not often that we see black on black violence in the realm of race-baiting. But Herman Cain is being race-baited by gentry whites and blacks. Perhaps it is the “paper bag test” that Don Lemon recently lamented that drives the race-baiting this time.
“We rarely expect a member of a minority group to discriminate against someone else in the same group. But that is exactly what happens among African-Americans.
More than any other minority group in the United States, blacks discriminate against one another. The discrimination, called “colorism,” is based on skin tone: whether a person is dark-skinned or light-skinned or in the broad middle somewhere.
Most African-Americans refuse to discuss this self-destructive problem even in private. According to the EEOC, though, the number of such cases are steadily increasing, jumping from 413 in fiscal year 1994 to 1,382 in 2002, a figure that represents about 3 percent of all cases the agency receives yearly.
The most recent case making news in the black press involves two employees of an Applebee’s restaurant in Jonesboro, Ga., near Atlanta. There, Dwight Burch, a dark-skinned waiter, who has left the restaurant, filed a lawsuit against Applebee’s and his light-skinned African-American manager. [snip]
Colorism’s history is fascinating: Fair-skinned slaves automatically enjoyed plum jobs in the master’s house, if they had to work at all. Many traveled throughout the nation and abroad with their masters and their families. They were exposed to the finer things, and many became educated as a result. Their darker-tone peers toiled in the fields. They were the ones who were beaten, burned and hanged, the ones permanently condemned to be the lowest of the low in U.S. society. For them, even learning – reading, ‘riting, ‘rithmetic – was illegal.
When slavery ended, light-skinned blacks established social organizations that barred darker ex-slaves. Elite blacks of the early 20th century were fair-skinned almost to the person. Even today, most blacks in high positions have fair skin tones, and most blacks who do menial jobs or are in prison are dark. Believe it or not, popular black magazines, such as Ebony as Essence, prefer light-skinned models in their beauty product ads. [snip]
In his 1996 book The Future of the Race, Henry Louis Gates Jr., chairman of the Afro-American studies department at Harvard, described his encounter with the brown paper bag when he came to Yale in the late 1960s, when skin-tone bias was brazenly practiced: “Some of the brothers who came from New Orleans held a “bag party.’ As a classmate explained it to me, a bag party was a New Orleans custom wherein a brown paper bag was stuck on the door.
“Anyone darker than the bag was denied entrance.“
Perhaps “colorism” is what animates the British accented Martin Bashir to brazenly question the “riting” skills of Herman Cain with “can he spell Iraq?“.
Cain, who graduated with a degree in mathematics from college, at least did not have his “rithmetic” skills questioned by Bashir. But the campaign is still young. Maybe if Cain bleached his skin like some rappers do Bashir will treat Cain with more dignity and respect.
Martin Bashir of MSNBC is not alone in his “colorism” attacks on Herman Cain. On Bashir’s program Karen Finney joined in the “colorism-baiting”:
“On Martin Bashir’s television program this afternoon, Democratic strategist and MSNBC analyst Karen Finney said that Republicans are supporting Herman Cain because of his race:
“One of the things about Herman Cain is, I think that he makes that white Republican base of the party feel okay, feel like they are not racist because they can like this guy,” Finney said. “I think he giving that base a free pass. And I think they like him because they think he’s a black man who knows his place. I know that’s harsh, but that’s how it sure seems to me.”
“Thank you for spelling that out,” Bashir responded.
This isn’t the first time liberals have made this kind of charge about Cain and his supporters. During an online production of NBC’s Meet the Press this week, Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland said white voters support Cain to show they aren’t racist. “I think when [members of the Tea Party] can vote for a Herman Cain and hear him say the things that he says they feel like, ‘Well, you know, I can, I support this guy and…so it shows that I’m not racist and I’m supportive,'” Cummings told host David Gregory.”
1%’er Janeane Garafalo told 1%er Keith Olbermann:
“Janeane Garofalo: “Herman Cain is probably well liked by some of the Republicans because it hides the racist elements of the Republican party. Conservative movement and tea party movement, one in the same.
“People like Karl Rove liked to keep the racism very covert. And so Herman Cain provides this great opportunity say you can say ‘Look, this is not a racist, anti-immigrant, anti-female, anti-gay movement. Look we have a black man.'”
So, according to this Obama Dimocrat strategist conservatives like Herman Cain because he’s a black man who knows his place. That’s an amazing standard. If you don’t support half-white half-Kenyan milk chocolate Barack Obama of Hawaii you are a racist. If you do support dark chocolate descendant of American slavery who grew up to be a captain of industry Tennessee born Georgia raised Herman Cain you are a racist.
Barack Obama whose dad was at best a sperm donor who vanished and was booted from Harvard for sperm donations is also a Harvard graduate whose mom dumped him into the arms of her banker parents so she could continue her elite travels for male companionship. Herman Cain’s father by contrast was a janitor, a barber, a chauffeur. Maybe it is a class bias that drives these anti-Cain Obama Dimocrats along with a color line paper bag bias.
We do have to consider that maybe it’s not colorism or classism that motivates the hatred. Maybe it’s because Cain supports those durn Joos and says things like “so-called Palestinians”. “So-called Palestinians” is surely a mistake, right?
Well, Cain might have some history on his side:
“In 1937, a local Arab leader, Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, told the Peel Commission, which ultimately suggested the partition of Palestine: “There is no such country [as Palestine]! ‘Palestine’ is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria.”
The representative of the Arab Higher Committee to the United Nations submitted a statement to the General Assembly in May 1947 that said “Palestine was part of the Province of Syria” and that, “politically, the Arabs of Palestine were not independent in the sense of forming a separate political entity.” A few years later, Ahmed Shuqeiri, later the chairman of the PLO, told the Security Council: “It is common knowledge that Palestine is nothing but southern Syria.”
If it’s not the durn Joos, perhaps the hatred and attacks come from the slight possibility that Cain might have a strategy that somehow will work and the Obama Dimocrats will have a dark chocolate opponent:
“HOMEWOOD, Ala. — Herman Cain’s rise in the polls appears to be no fluke.
Unlike some other Republican presidential contenders who have flamed out after auditioning as the conservative antidote to Mitt Romney, Cain is still riding high atop public opinion surveys.
“They said I was the flavor of the week,” the Georgia businessman said at an appearance Friday on a campaign swing through Alabama. “But four weeks later the Cain campaign still tastes good!“
Cain has little money (though Cain is “pacing himself” and the money is beginning to come in), lots of gaffes, not much of an organization and his 9-9-9 plan is under examination and assault. Conventional wisdom also says that Cain should be spending all his time in Iowa and New Hampshire. But maybe Cain, the guy who has somehow gotten high on the saddle, knows what he is doing:
“Cain has carved out an unorthodox — some say impossible — path to the White House, largely eschewing early voting states to focus heavily on the South. It’s a region where tea party groups, social conservatives and evangelical voters that make up the backbone of his support hold sway. [snip]
Block argues that next year’s compressed primary calendar means more states will play larger roles. So instead of scurrying around New Hampshire trying to win over skeptics, the campaign team is revving up support in states where Cain’s small government, anti-tax message and church revival-style delivery resonate with voters.
Cain was trying to show that in Alabama, where enthusiastic, overflow crowds greeted him at every stop. In Talladega, residents were visibly excited by the first visit from a presidential candidate in modern memory.
“I heard that FDR waved from the train once when he came through,” said Jeanne Rasco, who had turned out for a packed Cain rally at a historic theater on the city square. “I think it shows he cares about our values. He’s one of us,” she said.”
What clever racists! They shower love and say “HE’S ONE OF US.” They’re “enthusiastic” and emerge in “overflow crowds”. Clever racists huh? Cain doesn’t think so:
“Cain himself plays up his Southern roots: His drawl grows a little thicker and he mentions God a little more frequently, to suit the crowd. “I am in Alabama because Alabama matters,” Cain said at the state’s party headquarters. “Ya’ll are my neighbors.”
In the South, some Cain supporters say that supporting an African-American could turn long-held racial perceptions around. No Deep South states supported Barack Obama in 2008 and elected representatives in the state have become more racially polarized in recent years.
Scott Beason, a Republican Alabama state senator, said a Cain victory, especially in the Deep South, would be a visible sign of progress.
“It would change the stereotypes that still exist about how people make their decisions down here,” Beason said. “I think it’s ironic that he will do better here than in the so-called enlightened states up north.” ”What folks are doing is listening to what is he saying and he is not afraid to say what he thinks.“
In much the same way that old time Southern racists used biblical passages about the “mark of Cain” to discriminate and oppress black people, the Obama left today will twist words and use any reasoning to stop Herman Cain. We don’t think it will work to hurt him. Instead of cursed, Herman Cain appears to be blessed.
