A Laugh From The Belly On The Fourth Of July

Today is America’s birthday kinda, sorta and we recall 1776 with great joy and exuberant liberation. It is Independence Day 2011. Explode the fireworks, wave the flag, celebrate!

For a birthday bash however, there seems to be a bit of a sullen attitude in some quarters:

“In this summer of our discontent, Americans arrive at the Fourth of July full of doubt and disappointment. The sickly economy is the main cause; if unemployment were 8 million (about 5.2 percent) instead of 14 million (9.1 percent), Americans would feel better. But we are also unhappy with our democracy — though hardly anyone says so — and this goes to the heart of how we see ourselves.”

The Iranian despots are mocking the land of E Pluribus Unum. Some laugh that toilet paper is rationed at iconic Coney Island.

Our British cousins, whose collective asses our foremothers and forefathers kicked, are writing about how gloomy we are these days:

“They’ll be celebrating Independence Day – the birthday of the United States and the 235th anniversary of shaking off the oppressive yoke of British rule.

On this day in 1776 a group of 13 colonies broke away to found a new nation free to govern itself as it saw fit, pledging that each citizen would have the unalienable right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. A nation, as Americans are apt to declare without equivocation, which became the greatest on the face of the earth.

That’s the good news. On the flip side, however, a country whose hallmark has always been a sense of irrepressible optimism is in the grip of unprecedented uncertainty and self-doubt.

With the United States mired in three foreign wars, beaten down by an economy that shows few signs of emerging from deep recession and deeply disillusioned with President Barack Obama, his Republican challengers and Congress, the mood is dark.

The last comparable Fourth of July was probably in 1980, when there was a recession, skyrocketing petrol prices and an Iranian hostage crisis, with 53 Americans being held in Tehran.”

No doubt, things are bad and the Brits are chortling a bit. But here at Big Pink our party hats are on, our horns are blaring forth, and our laughs come from the belly as we salute the Red, White, and Blue.

How can anyone not join us in celebration? Election day 2012 is almost here and every day from here on is a day closer to a brighter future.

There are some who deserve to hide and be in gloom this glorious day. Via Driscoll (The ‘Bam Who Fell To Earth) we are reminded of what a certain youngish dolt wrote in Big Media a few years ago on the night that Obama won the Iowa caucuses:

“I’ve been blessed to hear many great orations. [snip] Some of those politicians mirrored my beliefs better than Obama does. Some of their speeches were more declarative and immediate in their passion. But none achieve quite what Obama, at his best, creates.

Obama’s finest speeches do not excite. They do not inform. They don’t even really inspire. They elevate. They enmesh you in a grander moment, as if history has stopped flowing passively by, and, just for an instant, contracted around you, made you aware of its presence, and your role in it. He is not the Word made flesh, but the triumph of word over flesh, over color, over despair. The other great leaders I’ve heard guide us towards a better politics, but Obama is, at his best, able to call us back to our highest selves, to the place where America exists as a glittering ideal, and where we, its honored inhabitants, seem capable of achieving it, and thus of sharing in its meaning and transcendence. [snip]

The tens of thousands of new voters Obama brought to the polls tonight came because he wrapped them in that experience, because he let them touch politics as it could be, rather than merely as it is. And for that, he deserved to win. And he deserves our thanks. The politician who gets the most votes merits our congratulations. But the politician who enlarges our politics and empowers more Americans to step forward into the public square deserves our gratitude. And we, in turn, deserve to permit ourselves to feel inspired, if only for a night.”

If we had written the above the only course to follow on this Independence Day would be self-slaughter. Suicide. How can anyone survive having written, let alone thought, such destructive drivel, such ill-educated filth?

On a day when many Americans will read the founding documents, the great addresses, and listen to recordings of words that will live forever – who can sensibly recall a single syllable of Iowa night 2008 with any sort of pride or respect? The L.A. Times reports that not many in Iowa are proud of what they did that night, although there are still some with the intelligence of cornstalks.

Let those who wrote drivel about drivel speeches be embarrassed today. We are celebrating today. So, have a great guffaw, a large belly laugh aimed at the fools who remember Iowa 2008, or Grecian column night as anything but a national calamity.

Here at Big Pink we are celebrating. We applaud women hot dog eating contest winners. We wave the stars and stripes. We play the patriotic songs.

But we will zip a dee doo dah today too with non-traditional July Fourth fare. It’s a zip a dee doo dah Fourth of July day!

  1. Happy 4th Admin and Big Pinkers…

    No doubt, things are bad and the Brits are chortling a bit. But here at Big Pink our party hats are on, our horns are blaring forth, and our laughs come from the belly as we salute the Red, White, and Blue.

    I spoke to my ‘boss’ last week and wished her a Happy 4th. She said, (while spending her summer vacation in England), “Over here, it is a day of ‘Remembrance’. I said, “Yea, that’s because they LOST!”

    I asked how the economy was over there compared to here in CA. She said it’s WORSE over there, and she goes to England every year, so she has something to compare it to.

    So………….why are the stuffy ones feeling sorry for America? They are just jealous. 😉

    Well, that’s convenient! Six years ago the writer made these predictions. Now maybe we can see if he was right.

  3. I’d like to know why Dominique Strauss-Kahn was in such a rush to leave the hotel on that particular day

    They caught him at the airport iirc. When was his reservation made?

    But really, leaving an upset maid behind, naturally he’d get out of the hotel asap.

  4. TurnDownObama, long live the Oxford Comma!

    As we recall there was a case involving a missing comma which cost the contract signer $15 million. A vague memory tells us PriceWaterhouse (before the Coopers was added) was the culprit.

    WaPo’s belated, grudging report on Israel’s success against Gaza flotilla

    Reading Jerusalem correspondent Joel Greenberg’s article in the Monday, July 4, edition of the Washington Post about Israel’s success in getting Greece to stymie the Gaza flotilla, I had two reactions: What took the Post so long? and better late than never.

    But after reading Greenberg’s entire catch-up article, I also find that it’s still incomplete in many important respects.

    First the timing: Greek naval commandos took control of one of the flotilla ships, the U.S. Audacity of Hope, on Friday and forced it back to Greece. It would be normal journalism for the correspondent of a daily newspaper to report this — and its many ramifications — the next day, in the Saturday edition. It didn’t happen. Well, at least then in the Sunday edition. That didn’t happen either. Greenberg skipped two full news cycles before weighing in with a Monday piece. (‘As Gaza flotilla stalls, Israel hails ”success” — Repeat of Deadly 2010 Clashes Averted’ page A6). That’s shortchanging Post readers who expect timely news, not warmed over news.

    And even when you Greenberg finally digs to report Israel’s diplomatic success in getting Greece to blunt the flotilla’s objective to breach Israel’s blockade, the Post and Greenberg put Israel’s “success” between quotation marks — a signal to readers that they might not share in this assessment.

    Then there are the things Greenberg still isn’t reporting. While he writes that Greece arrested the skipper of the Audacity of Hope, he fails to mention that he faces criminal charges of endangering his passengers and violating Greece’s ban against any vessels seeking to depart for Gaza. Nor does he report that his first hearing won’t be until tomorrow, July 5, so he’ll be incarcerated over the Fourth of July.

    Even more importantly, he still doesn’t report that the Obama administration warned the skipper and his passengers that they also could face criminal charges in the U.S. for violating American laws prohibiting support of a terrorist organization — in this instance, Hamas, which rules Gaza.

    Nor does he take note of the fact that the international Quartet — the U.S., the EU, the UN and Russia — issued a statement strongly discouraging any and all Gaza flotillas because they may provoke violent confrontations — and unnecessary confrontations to boot since Gaza gets ample shipments of consumer products via Israel and Egypt. Also taking Israel’s side against the flotilla organizers were Australia and Canada.

    Then, he fails to report Greece’s Sunday offer of a compromise that would have Greece ship any legitimate aid aboard the flotilla to Gaza via normal channels — i.e. via land crossings from Egypt or Israel. And that this offer was roundly rejected by the flotilla organizers who finally admitted that they weren’t on any humanitarian mission, but instead were and still are intent on breaching Israel’s sea blockade.

    What all this makes quite evident is that the cliché Greenberg and others have disseminated about Israel’s supposed isolation on the world stage bears no relationship to reality. Certainly in this instance, Israel had plenty of company, while it was the flotilla organizers who were isolated.

    All in all, I ‘m still left to wonder what took Greenberg so long to even produce an incomplete piece and to have it published only after some Post readers made him and his editors aware of his dereliction of journalistic duty to get things on time and in full, proper perspective. As for better late than never — well, that would be a bit too generous.

  6. On Sunday, the daughter and I placed little flags along the front edge of her property. Later we drove to the vantage point I mentioned up thread. Upon returning, we glanced to admire those flags. But although the property is wide and emphasized with a white picket fence, one had to exert effort to see the flags because their staffs were too short. When I remarked upon the effort required to notice them, the daughter replied, “That’s all right. They are there.”

    I don’t know when I’ve spent a more meaningful Independence Day although I always revel in the spirit of it. And I suppose I can attribute that to the negative influence of Obama upon this Republic.

    I’ve seen footage this morning of the affair he held for 1200 military and families yesterday. It includes holding young children in each arm, one white, one black. He’s trying to crawl back. Condescending more and more to what he knows Americans expect. A tragedy that a sitting President is learning American from the Oval Office. Please, America, never again. Above all the candidate needs to be a Patriot.

    Thanks admin. It’s a wonderful post; I shall return now to view all the videos save the final one which I could not resist watching when the page refreshed and Adobe succeeded where earlier it had failed.

  7. DA set to drop charges vs. DSK

    Prosecutors will agree to drop the charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn — either on his next court date in two weeks or even sooner, according to a top investigator in the case who called the eventual dismissal “a certainty.”

    “We all know this case is not sustainable,” the source told The Post exclusively yesterday.

    “Her credibility is so bad now, we know we cannot sustain a case with her,” the source said, referring to the Guinean hotel maid who accused Strauss-Kahn of trying to rape her in his plush Midtown hotel suite — shocking charges that got the international banker bounced as head of the IMF and also derailed, at least for now, his bid to become president of France.

    “She is not to be believed in anything that comes out of her mouth — which is a shame, because now we may never know what happened in that hotel room,” said the source, who is at the center of the investigation and would speak only on the condition of anonymity.

    “Did [Strauss-Kahn] use force? Was there actually a crime? I don’t think we’ll ever know.”

    Meanwhile, defense sources described a different scenario, in which DSK admittedly engaged with the maid in a consensual, sex-for-money exchange in his Sofitel suite, with no force involved — and she turned against him only when he stiffed her.

    “In the past, guests have left stuff for her,” meaning money, one source close to the defense investigation said last night. “She goes back to look for the money,” and is disappointed, the source said. Also likely irking the maid? “His dismissive nature,” said the source.

    Multiple investigators for the defense and prosecution have confirmed that they believe the maid was turning tricks at the hotel, and prosecution sources have even accused her of continuing to “entertain” male visitors while in a DA safehouse.

    Meanwhile yesterday, French lawyers for Strauss-Kahn promised to fight back with criminal charges of their own against a French writer who claims he tried to rape her nearly a decade ago.

    Tristane Banon has accused the French banker of behaving like a “rutting chimpanzee” and allegedly yanking open her bra and attempting to get into her pants during a 2002 interview. Her lawyers said they plan to press charges against Strauss-Kahn in France today.

    But the banker’s legal team in Europe says they’ll file a criminal-slander complaint if Banon makes good on her threat.

    The volleys of accusations across the Atlantic come as new details emerge on the collapsing sex case in New York.

    For six weeks, the maid told investigators a credible and compelling story about her travails of rape and beatings in escaping Guinea’s violent regime, and about her alleged re-victimization last month by Strauss-Kahn.

    “One-hundred-percent consistent,” one top investigator called her first month-and-a-half of statements. “Rock solid,” another top investigator said.

    Only eight days ago did the maid’s story fall apart, according to two top investigators on the case, and Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. made what they termed the courageous decision to inform the defense and agree to release Strauss-Kahn without bail.

    Officials realized that for six weeks, ever since the May 14 incident, she had bamboozled some of the best minds in the storied Manhattan DA’s Office, including a trio of seasoned top investigators with a combined 75 years in the business — Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, Ann Prunty and Chief DA Investigator Rob Mooney.

    Vance “put his very best, most intelligent people on this — and eventually, we found the truth,” said one top investigator.

    Defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman declined to talk about the pending dismissal, or about a meeting set for tomorrow morning between the defense team and Vance.

  8. very very interesting.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0711/DLC_records_to_Clinton_Foundation.html

    The remnants of the once-powerful Democratic Leadership Council, which closed its doors earlier this year after a period of ideological and organizational decline, are being absorbed into the Clinton Foundation, founder Al From said in an email.

    From wrote this morning:

    The DLC has accomplished much of what we first set out to achieve. As a result, the DLC itself ceased operations earlier this year, but the records and materials prepared and formulated by the DLC over the years have significant historical value.

    Because many of these materials show and explain the growth and development of President Clinton’s policies, passions and legacy, the William J. Clinton Foundation has purchased all of the records and materials of the DLC. The Clinton Presidential Center is an important location for telling the story not just of the Clinton administration but also of the world at the latter part of the 20th century. We believe these records are an important part of that history, and believe the Clinton Foundation is an appropriate and fitting repository.

    The DLC sought for a time to identify itself with Obama’s message and his campaign, but found itself relatively unwelcome there and the final move cements its place as a central force in Clintonism and the Clinton historical record.

    The move may also resolve any debt the organization was coping with, and allow it to fold cleanly.

    Full email after the jump.

    I am pleased to report that the historical records of the Democratic Leadership Council will become part of the Clinton Foundation.

    In 1985, the Democratic Party was out of ideas and out of power. A small group of reform-minded governors – including Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton – senators and house members and I formed the DLC to change both. And over the last quarter century, I believe the record will show that we did just that.

    With then-Governor Clinton as chairman, the DLC championed bold and innovative reform ideas that challenged old orthodoxies. National service (AmeriCorps), an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit, welfare reform, charter schools, community policing, expanded trade and re-inventing government – all DLC ideas put into action during the Clinton Presidency – have changed America for the better.

    Our nation and our politics have changed significantly since 1985.

    In addition to being an important part of America’s historical narrative, the DLC was a transformative organization for the political landscape of the country. It was founded on the belief that if we held firmly to the first principles of the Democratic Party but furthered them with fresh ideas and modern means, the American people would once again turn to us for national leadership.

    Running on ideas shaped during his DLC chairmanship, President Clinton became the first Democrat to be elected and re-elected president in six decades. Most important, the DLC ideas he put into action restored the American Dream for tens of millions of Americans and became the model for resurgent progressive parties in countries across the globe.

    The New Democrat model is as powerful today as ever. Statehouses, state legislatures, and local governments across America are led by a new generation of leaders whose political philosophies were shaped by President Clinton and the DLC. We are thankful these documents and ideas will live on, and the new generation of leaders can learn from the politics that President Clinton and the DLC forged.

    Kerry share of Jewish vote: 74%. Obama share: 78%. Current Obama approval among Jews: 60%.

    In retrospect — and it didn’t take a lot of retrospect — that Middle East policy speech was one of the great own-goals of the Obama presidency.

  11. STRONG-ARMING ENDORSEMENTS

    To stem the tide of bad news, Team Obama must have been desperate to pressure whoever in the base is susceptible / bribeable into providing “early support”.

    NEA support down from 2008, 79% down to 72% now.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/05/us-obama-teachers-idUSTRE76352P20110705

    National teachers’ group endorses Obama for 2nd term
    ===============

    (Reuters) – The nation’s largest teachers union voted on Monday to recommend that President Barack Obama be elected for another term.

    The vote from National Education Association delegates at a meeting in Chicago was 72.03 percent, a bit down from the last time the NEA recommended Obama in 2008, when the “yes” vote was 79.75 percent.

    “President Barack Obama shares our vision for a stronger America,” said Dennis Van Roekel, president of NEA. “He has never wavered from talking about the importance of education or his dedication to a vibrant middle class.”

    The recommendation came early for the NEA. The Association’s presidential recommendation process typically takes place the summer before the general election.

    But the NEA took the vote Monday to provide “early and strong support” to ensure the election of a candidate on the side of students and working families, according to an NEA statement.

    “The last two years of state legislatures and the mid-term elections were eye-opening, demonstrating what can happen when education legislation and decisions are left in the hands of politicians who do not support public schools,” Van Roekel said.

    Van Roekel praised Obama’s initiatives as president, including the Education Jobs Bill, which Van Roekel said kept class sizes from ballooning and kept important education programs and services from being cut.

    In recent months, Republican-dominated legislatures have passed limits on public school teachers’ collective bargaining powers in several states, including Ohio, Tennessee, Idaho and Wisconsin.

    Vice-president Joseph Biden appeared at the NEA meeting on Sunday, criticizing legislators who attack teachers and telling NEA members: “You are not the problem!”

    With 3.2 million members, the NEA says it is the nation’s largest professional employee organization.

  12. extra.

    There is a Facebook page for NEA members opposed to the early Obama endorsement. https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_161754330559955

    Meanwhile, NEA member and education blogger Fred Klonsky says the early endorsement was not as big a hit as you might expect:

    Some day the story will be told of why NEA President Dennis Van Roekel decided to push for a first time ever presidential endorsement a year ahead of time.

    I don’t get it. Those that support it are luke warm. Those that are against it are pissed.

    I am convinced Obama would have received the official endorsement next RA. But this just seems smelly and manipulative by many delegates.

    After the vote, he added, “As for the Obama vote, many activists I spoke with were dismayed. The 72% of the delegates that voted support are well short of the 80% that Obama received in 2008. But it is too many. The difference is that in 2008, the vote of support was given with optimism and enthusiasm. Today’s vote was given with noses held. I’m not proud of the vote. But it is what it is. As always, it shows we have work to do.”

    …………………………….

    A lot of those are not gonna vote, 2008 euphoria is dead and gone.

  13. Great post, admin!!!

    Just one more Independence Day left in Omerica…can’t wait till Nov 2012!

  14. Good article on propoganda against Israel:

    In recent years, Palestinian propagandists and their international supporters have attempted to brand Israel with the label of “apartheid,” the despicable South African policy of racial discrimination that reduced the African non-white population to a decidedly inferior position akin to chattel. In many international circles, this political charlatanism has succeeded in giving the Middle East’s one and only democracy a black eye. However, the reality is quite the opposite of what the Palestinians peddle to a very gullible world.

    In Israel, contrary to the Palestinians’ fictional portrait of the Jewish state, not only are Arabs citizens with equal rights and protections under the law, but Arabic is an official second language. And many Arabs serve in a variety of positions in the government, including Deputy Speaker of the Knesset (Parliament) Majalli Wahabi of the Kadimah Party, as well as officers in the armed forces like Lieutenant Hesham Aborea and police such as Deputy Inspector-General Jamal Hakroush, deputy commander of the traffic division. Arabs are free to live anywhere in Israel, although most choose to live within their own ethnic, cultural, and religious communities. Arab students are welcome in the nation’s universities and colleges and serve as professionals in all areas of the national life.

    By contrast, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has stated that no Jews will be permitted to live in a Palestinian state. The Palestinian Christian Arab community has shrunk drastically in the last eighteen years since the PLO-controlled Palestinian Authority took over in the West Bank — to the point where today, Beit Jalla, once a Christian town outside Jerusalem, is without a Christian population, and Bethlehem, once the most Christian of cities in the Holy Land, is now peopled with a Muslim majority. So, too, do Palestinian Christians face a determined campaign of forced conversion to Islam by the Hamas government of Gaza, which permits only one Jew to reside in Gaza: the five-year captive kidnapped Israeli soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit.

    So if the term “apartheid” still refers to unequal treatment under the law, forced segregation, or outright exclusion on religious, racial, or ethnic grounds, then it’s the Palestinian donkey that should be pinned with the “apartheid” label. Palestine — where the president and the prime minister hold their offices without benefit of popular national elections, where non-Arabs are prohibited from owning land, and where the sale of land to a Jew is a capital crime.

    Of course, the Palestinian BDS movement doesn’t want the world to pay attention to any of these facts, and its international supporters will conveniently ignore the evidence, but anyone with a modicum of intelligence and a reasonably open mind will want to seek a Palestinian response to my charges. Nabil Sha’ath and Saeb Erekat: the world is awaiting your response, lo sema-hát (if you please), Inshallah.

  17. Here we go, this just got way more serious.

    Mexican lawmakers push for extradition of U.S. officials suspected in the operation that sent guns across the border.

    While the investigation continues into the U.S. operation that helped send thousands of guns south of the border, Mexican lawmakers say they’ll press for extradition and prosecution in Mexico of American officials who authorized and ran the operation.

    “I obviously feel violated. I feel my country’s sovereignty was violated,” Mexico Sen. Rene Arce Islas told Fox News. “They should be tried in the United States and the Mexican government should also demand that they also be tried in Mexico since the incidents took place here. There should be trials in both places.”

    Arce is chairman of Mexico’s Commission for National Security, a congressional panel similar to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

    His point of view is shared by many Mexican politicians, including Sen. Santiago Creel, a former Interior Minister and the likely presidential nominee next year of the National Action Party to succeed Felipe Calderone, also of PAN.

    “I think we should at least try to prove that what happened in Mexico must be sanctioned by Mexican laws and under our sovereignty,” Creel told us. “What can’t happen is that this now ends on an administrative sanction, or a resignation. No, no, no. Human lives were lost here. A decision was made to carry out an operation that brought very high risk to human lives.”

    Mexico doesn’t completely understand Operation Fast and Furious, the American plan to help send assault rifles and revolvers to Mexico as a means of exposing the gun trafficking rings that operate along the border. The project lasted 18 months and allowed some 2,500 guns to be illegally sold to suspects the U.S. government knew to be front men for the cartels.

    Rather than follow the guns and arrest the brokers and middle men who helped move the guns south, agents for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives dropped back and ignored the transfer and transport of the weapons to Mexico.

    Just days after watching the guns be sold to these so-called straw buyers, those who bought the weapons illegally and then sold them illegally, the weapons showed up at crime scenes and seizures in Mexico. Rather than stop the operation and tell Mexican police, U.S. officials continued to prime the pump, telling gun stores to order more weapons and sell hundreds to just a few individuals.

    To Mexico, the U.S. government has blood on its hands.

    “It confirms what many Mexicans already believe. That there is this conspiracy from the U.S. to sell guns to Mexico, and that conspiracy has to do with this idea that America is trying to control Mexico or protect the arms industry,” said Ana Maria Salazar, a respected Mexican political analyst and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Drug Enforcement Policy under President Bill Clinton. Before that she worked as a policy adviser in the White House on Latin American affairs.

    While it is highly doubtful the U.S. would allow its law enforcement officers to be extradited to Mexico, Salazar says Mexico could make the situation uncomfortable for the U.S. if it chooses to publicize the many people killed or injured by so-called Fast and Furious guns.

    “It would be very difficult for them to get a fair trial in Mexico,” she said. “But I think it’s very important they be prosecuted in the U.S. Not just those involved, but those who allowed it to happen. This should be followed up with a very strong prosecution here. If you are not going to be nervous in the United States, you should at least be nervous where these guns are found,” says Salazar.

    A Prominent Republican is joining a prominent Democrat in predicting that Gov. Cuomo will become President Obama’s running mate for vice president next year.

    Former New York GOP boss William Powers, credited with playing a key role in electing Rudy Giuliani mayor and George Pataki governor, was effusive in his praise of Cuomo’s successes in the just-ended legislative session, and in his prediction of the freshman governor’s political future.

    “Andrew had a fabulous session. It was fabulous. A property-tax cap, ethics reform and, for Democrats, gay marriage,” said Powers.

    “I don’t think there’s any doubt Obama is going to pick him as his running mate. The president is in trouble and [Vice President Joseph] Biden doesn’t bring anything to his ticket.

    “The president will call him up later this year and say, ‘Andrew, you have to do this for the good of the country.’ What’s Andrew going to say, ‘No?’ ”

    Cuomo, who saw a flurry of predictions last week in the wake of the gay-marriage victory that he’ll run for president in 2016, has repeatedly refused to discuss the possibility of higher office.

    He wouldn’t comment either on Powers’ prediction, but a source familiar with his thinking half-jokingly said this when asked what action Cuomo would take if Obama called to offer him the nation’s No. 2 position: “He won’t answer.”

    Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown earlier this year also predicted that Obama would pick Cuomo to replace Biden, who he claimed would be named by the president to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

    “He’s a big name, a big-state governor, and a Democrat who is taking on the issue of public-employee salaries and pensions. Plus, he looks good,” Brown said of Cuomo.

    Cuomo wouldn’t have to resign as governor to run for vice president, although many voters would likely react negatively since he could be leaving office just two years into his four-year term.

  21. Cuomo for Biden, thats like swapping a 10$ note for a 5$ note. Cuomo brings nothing, its not like New York is a swing state but go ahead show all how desperate you are and swap one gaffe machine for another.

  22. Obama/Cuomo ?

    What was it the Hispanics said about Obama in 2008? Something like “Como se namo Obama” ?

  23. Thanks Admin, and yes, I TOO feel the growing optimism and can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

  24. Our first and only Casey Anthony comment: Casey Anthony found not guilty in the murder of her child. Perhaps now the news broadcasters can return to reporting news.

  25. I don’t think it will be Cuomo…it will be Hillary! She’s going to have to drag him across the finish line…

  26. Casey Anthony found not guilty in the murder of her child.

    —-
    Whadda crock, maybe OJ did it.

  27. So Casey Anthony is found not guilty while Blago gets put on the spit.

    Justice really is blind.

  28. I just caught the tail end of it, but it sounds like the Casey Anthony jury (all of them) does not want to take questions or talk to the media.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, shouldn’t they be proud of their decision?

  29. From what I could tell, not following it in-depth, the evidence against Anthony was highly circumstancial. Prosecution spent too much time accusing her of being a bad person and not enough time on solid evidence and an unbreakable chain of events. Reasonable doubts were not laid to rest.

  30. votermom,

    I agree.

    And what was totally obscene in my opinion was the public response, i.e. jamming each other aside in order to get a seat in the gallery.

  31. He is plus 1.2% today on RCP. As for Anthony, as an attorney, I can tell you the case was very difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt….

    Democrats: We Are Going to Cut, Slash, and Chop MediCare, But We Want Seniors Everywhere to Know We’re Going to Keep the Name Intact
    —Ace

    That is the true headline here.

    Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Senate Democrat, said: “We are very willing to entertain savings in Medicare. Medicare gives very good health care very inefficiently.”
    In return, Mr. Schumer said, Republicans should be willing to consider some additional revenue.

    Negotiators said they were seriously considering cuts in Medicare payments to hospitals for uncollectible patient debt and the training of doctors; steps to eliminate Medicare “overpayments” to nursing homes; a reduction in the federal share of some Medicaid spending; and new restrictions on states’ ability to finance Medicaid by imposing taxes on hospitals and other health care providers.

    Medicare and Medicaid insure more than 100 million people, account for 23 percent of all federal spending and are likely to be an important part of any budget deal. Military spending, which accounts for about 20 percent of federal expenditures, is likely to be included as well.

    Obama and the Democrats already swiped $500 billion from Medicare, and their non-plan plans for reducing spending call for cutting a trillion plus more. And they repeat that here, looking to cut “waste” and such from Medicare, but to the tune of hundreds of billions.

    They also wish to run on the plank of “saving Medicare.”

    But in what way? It seems to me they are eager to cut the program. They just want to keep the name, and tell seniors that by saving the name they saved the program.

    Note that the Democrats intend to cut, cut, cut Medicare without any plausible plan for delivering the same levels of service for less money.

    ——
    There was no proof that he had molested her at all, and the judge therefore would not let them mention it in the closing.

    The defense just threw it out as an excuse for Casey’s rotten behavior when she knew her daughter was dead and didn’t do anything about it for a month except party. Casey also said she was groped by her brother, there was no proof of that either.

    Such a load of crap and the jury fell for it and delivered their verdict in 10 hours.

    Obama tries to stop execution in Texas of Mexican killer

    US president warns Texan authorities that execution would put America in breach of international legal obligations

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/05/obama-stop-texas-mexican-execution

    President Barack Obama is attempting to block the execution in Texas on Thursday of a Mexican man because it would breach an international convention and do “irreparable harm” to US interests.

    The White House has asked the US supreme court to put the execution of Humberto Leal Garcia on hold while Congress passes a law that would prevent the convicted rapist and murderer from being put to death along with dozens of other foreign nationals who were denied proper access to diplomatic representation before trials for capital crimes.

    The administration moved after the governor of Texas, Rick Perry, brushed aside appeals from diplomats, top judges, senior military officers, the United Nations and former president George W Bush to stay Leal’s execution because it could jeopardise American citizens arrested abroad as well as US diplomatic interests.

    Leal, 38, was convicted in 1994 of the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in San Antonio. Few question that he was responsible for the killing but the Texas authorities failed to tell Leal, who was born in Mexico and has lived in the US since the age of two, that under the Vienna convention he was entitled to contact the Mexican consulate when he was arrested.

    Leal’s lawyers argue that the lack of consular access played a role in the death penalty being applied because the Mexican national incriminated himself in statements made during “non-custodial interviews” with the police on the day of the murder. Had Leal had access to the Mexican consulate it would have been likely to have arranged a lawyer who would have advised the accused man to limit his statements to the police. As it was, the Mexican authorities were never informed of his arrest.

    In a 30-page brief to the supreme court, the administration said that the carrying out of the execution “would place the United States in irreparable breach of its international law obligation” under the convention.

    The White House said it was in the US’s interests to meet its treaty obligations.

    “These interests include protecting Americans abroad, fostering co-operation with foreign nations, and demonstrating respect for the international rule of law,” it said.

    Carrying out Leal’s execution would cause “irreparable harm” to US interests abroad, the administration added.

    “That breach would have serious repercussions for United States foreign relations, law-enforcement and other co-operation with Mexico, and the ability of American citizens travelling abroad to have the benefits of consular assistance in the event of detention,” it said.

    The legal situation has been complicated by earlier court rulings.

  37. “Obama’s finest speeches do not excite. The other great leaders I’ve heard guide us towards a better politics, but Obama is, at his best, able to call us back to our highest selves, to the place where America exists as a glittering ideal, and where we, its honored inhabitants, seem capable of achieving it, and thus of sharing in its meaning and transcendence.”

    Oh Christ, vomit. Gag me!

  38. Thanks, Shadow-

    The one day I watched- when the Dad was on the stand, and as I said, the moderator (?) mentioned (allegedly, maybe) the Dad had molested Casey as a child- The camera was flashing back and forth between Casey and the Dad trying to capture a reaction from Casey as her Dad was testifying… And like I said, I basically know nothing about the case- except for the charges against Casey- While I was watching, for that short amount of time. A distinct picture flashed in my mind… that it was the Dad that killed the child. Casey, protecting the Dad as they agreed beforehand before she was charged. The Dad molested the little girl and she never stopped talking about it. The Dad feared exposure because he did it, maybe accidentally- But he is the responsible party.

    As I said, I felt it during his testimony and Casey’s reaction to one of the questions while her Dad was testifying…

    Whatever happens afterwards… double jeopardy and all- I cued into the Dad as the perp-

  39. Casey’s dad was a retired homicide cop, mom was a nurse…so for them to cover up an ‘accident’, (defense said the child drown in their pool) and make it look like a murder by putting the child in trash bags and dumping the body down the street from their house…made no sense.

    It fits in with the lame-brained mother’s actions more than the grandparents that brought this to the attention of the police.

  40. “It fits in with the lame-brained mother’s actions more than the grandparents that brought this to the attention of the police.”

  41. Negotiators said they were seriously considering cuts in Medicare payments to hospitals for uncollectible patient debt and the training of doctors;
    —–
    If they do that, it will be a death sentence for the American Medical Education system and teaching hospitals. As an example, before Medicare went into effect, an intern where I trained in Boston was paid $300 a year. A few years later when I was an intern, I was paid $6,500 a year for spending 100-120 hours a week in the hospital. With my wife also working, that was a livable salary. Medical schools and hospitals can’t carry the full burden of paying for training the next generation of American doctors. I suspect that what will happen is that more “fully trained” doctors will be allowed to come to this country to fill the short fall. Right now, it is much less expensive to the pool of doctors with foreign medical graduates than it is to expand the US medical education system.
    ***********
    Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Senate Democrat, said: “We are very willing to entertain savings in Medicare. Medicare gives very good health care very inefficiently.”
    ——
    No news at H44 but Schumer is scum. Administrative overhead for Medicare is 20%. I guarantee that if Medicare is gradually shut down, even seniors with well financed retirements will be reduced to poverty. Over 65 age group is in the highest risk insurance category. Even if seniors can get insurance, it will be so limited and expensive that a serious illness will be financially ruinous.

    Somali Man Tied to Militants Was Detained Aboard U.S. Navy Ship for Months

    A Somali man accused of ties to two Islamist militant groups was captured by the American military in April and interrogated for months aboard a navy ship without being warned of his Miranda rights to remain silent and have a lawyer. On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced that the man had been flown to New York City to face prosecution before a civilian court.

    In an indictment unsealed in the Southern District of New York, Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame was charged with nine counts related to accusations that he provided support to the Somalia-based Al Shabaab and the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Mr. Warsame was captured on April 19, and a plane carrying him arrived in New York City around midnight Monday night, officials said.

    The Missing US Ambassador at the feast for Ronald Reagan

    Last night’s Guildhall dinner in honour of Ronald Reagan’s centenary was a truly glittering and warm occasion.
    The British roasted lamb and the sunny Californian chardonnay evoked the close Anglo-US relationship of Reagan and Thatcher as much as the fine speeches by Condi Rice and William Hague.
    But guests were left asking, where on earth was the American ambassador to London, Louis B Susman?
    “Our ambassador should be here,” said Lynn de Rothschild, the American entrepreneur who is married to Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and was one of Hillary Clinton’s key fundraisers in 2008 as well as a supporter of several Republican presidential candidates. “This was an historic dinner to mark Reagan’s centenary and to celebrate him as the man who ended the Cold War. What could not be more important?
    “Why is our ambassador not here on Independence Day? No excuse. How is it that America is not represented in this room by our ambassador? It is appalling that no representative of our government is in this room. This has the feel of petty partisanship.”
    Ambassador Susman is, of course, a long-standing Democrat fundraiser, nicknamed the vaccuum cleaner for his skill at sucking donations out of the wealthy. And his efforts to fill Obama’s campaign pockets was said by many to be his main qualification to come to London.
    According to the US embassy spokesman: “Ambassador Susman was pleased to be invited to the dinner but was unable to attend.”
    He had however been at the unveiling of a statue of Reagan in Grosvenor Square earlier in the day, and hosted a generous breakfast for the entire VIP visiting party and the military band. So he cannot be accused of snubbing the Reagan centenary.
    But he missed some cracking speeches and anecdotes. For more details see the Standard story here.
    And where was he? The embassy won’t say.

  47. Well, how many of you can say, you watched the fireworks from up in the sky? It was interesting to catch at least 3 or 4 big ones as we flew over them last night. Oh, BTW, if any of you are planning to go to Yellowstone, don’t miss the ‘Grand Prismatic Spring’ — more awesome than ‘Old Faithful’ if you ask me.

  48. Hacked: Obama’s campaign website

    By: Hayley Peterson | Examiner Staff | 07/05/11

    The Obama campaign website was hacked on Tuesday and invited supporters to two fake anti-government events hosted by an unnamed “Commy Obama.”

    The campaign’s application for mobile devices, such as iPhones and iPads, directed users to two events titled “Rules of Politics” scheduled for noon on Tuesday in Washington.

    “1. Politicians and other public servants lie,” read the event description provided on the Obama campaign website.

    “2. Politicians tell you what you want to hear and offer to provide things for ‘free’ to get votes.

    “3. When government buys, the people pay.”

    The 430-word message lists 21 total anti-government criticisms, none of which target Obama, another politician or a particular political party by name.

    The twenty-first note quotes the late Adrian Pierce Rogers, a Southern Baptist preacher who served two terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1979 to 1988.

    “‘You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom,'” the author writes, quoting one of Rogers’ more famous sermons. “‘When half of the people get an idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.’”

    The Obama website was hacked one day after Fox News’ Twitter account was hijacked and spread false information saying Obama had been assassinated.

    Update: Obama campaign adviser Ben LaBolt sent an e-mail to The Washington Examiner Tuesday afternoon saying the events calendar is user-generated, so the security of the website has not been compromised. The campaign removed the event from its calendar following the Examiner’s report.

  49. Adding Insult to Injury:

    NewsMax:

    We are committed to this fight against Shariah Law. Already, you have helped to fax the United States Congress over 300,000 times. You are making a distinct difference in the thought patterns, not just of everyday patriotic Americans, such as you, but with Members of the United States Congress. Thank you for your faxes—and let’s keep up the fight.

    This is literally a battle of survival for the integrity of the United States and our U.S. Constitution. But with the pro-Muslim leadership of Barack Hussein Obama, we must continue in this all-out war for the literal soul of America.

    You can make a very patriotic, serious decision to bring this fight to America! The Bill which outlaws foreign law from our U.S. Court system
    (H.R. 973) only has 56 co-sponsors. WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE THE OTHER 379 Representatives in this fight?

    Do you know where your Representative stands in this very important piece of legislation? You need to find out! And quickly.

    What is H.R. 973? This is a simple, short bill designed to protect Americans from being forced under laws which we did not enact, but were enacted by foreign powers or foreign peoples. The motivation for this bill is primarily that the sponsors do not want judges to use Shariah law, but this bill would apply to any foreign law which judges might use to subvert the Constitution or the will of the people of the United States. We are a sovereign nation.

    Part of the bill reads:

    ‘In any court created by or under article III of the Constitution of the United States, no justice, judge, or other judicial official shall decide any issue in a case before that court in whole or in part on the authority of foreign law, except to the extent the Constitution or an Act of Congress requires the consideration of that foreign law.’.

    However, It is still in the Subcommittee of the U.S. Constitution and has been since March 9th – almost 4 months ago! This bill is too important to stay in a Committee for that long!

    With your help we can expand this intensive NATIONAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN to put the other 379 House Members and U.S. Senators “ON NOTICE” that they should support this Bill, before too many cities include foreign law and Shariah Law in their judicial system!

    We urgently need your help today?

    Please CLICK HERE to FAX every Member of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 973 and urge them to become a co-signer right now! YOUR FAX will ALSO prod Congressmen to ACTION to get this important bill OUT of the Subcommittee.

    Since this is an all-out war for the very soul of America, a national media campaign is necessary to get this important bill passed. Our immediate plans include:

    Create ads that will tell people what their Member of Congress is doing on this vital bill Create and run television ads in key areas, as well as satellite and internet ads Run urgent campaigns on FACEBOOK and GOOGLE Keep up the pressure via our critical and massive Congressional faxing efforts
    But the stakes just got higher!

    Mr. Obama has nominated David Heyman as Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and at the same agency, Secretary Janet Napolitano has appointed Arif Alikhan as Assistant Secretary for Policy Development. Both men are devout, Shariah Law Muslims, and in her announcement Napolitano made that very clear. This administration continues to pander to Islam and supposed “political correctness.”

    Alikan is associated with the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) “a public service agency working for the civil rights of American Muslims.” BOTH men will have top security clearances. Several Muslims at the DHS who have top security clearances are associated with groups that claim Hamas and Hezbollah are “humanitarian” organizations.

    Meanwhile, Secretary Napolitano has ordered an investigation of the Border Agents who work for her, because they are allegedly “profiling” Muslims crossing into the United States at the Canadian border.

    These additional top security clearance Assistant Secretaries who uphold Shariah Law have a problem. You see, Shariah Law supports the establishment of a global Islamic state whose objectives are not compatible with the United States Constitution, the civil rights the Constitution guarantees and the representative, accountable government it authorizes. Already, Shariah Law has crept into the laws of several cities in the United States of America.

    U.S. Rep. Sandy Adams (R-FL) introduced H.R. 973 which outlaws foreign law from our U.S. Court system. She had 56 co-sponsors. Why aren’t more Congressmen committing to this very important bill? That’s why we must fax them to let them know how patriotic Americans truly feel. Let’s fax our Congressmen to raise our voice of support.

    Please CLICK HERE to FAX every Member of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 973 and urge them to become a co-signer right now! YOUR FAX will ALSO prod Congressmen to ACTION to get this important bill OUT of the Subcommittee.

    We must not let radical Islam penetrate our legal system!

    According to Shariah Law, their law supersedes any Constitutional Law!

    Little-by-little, Shariah Law is penetrating the United States that you and I once knew. Our founding fathers of our U.S. Constitution would rise up in rebellion to what is going on, even in our own court system where some places have already “embraced” Shariah Law in various degrees.

    I am NOT against Muslims! I am not against the right of any religion to practice their religion in the United States. Freedom of religion is one of the chief cornerstones of our republic and democracy. However, when a religion goes against our sovereign Constitution, then it must be thought of as sedition; and that religion must be limited.

    One of the objectives of Shariah Law is to make sure they take over every aspect and area of life in a country: political, military, religion, everyday life. That is the ultimate goal of Shariah Law—to CONTROL every area of your life.

    That is only one of the dangers of Shariah Law infiltrating our Justice system.

    The new Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan is Abed Hammoud. In the past, he has said that Israelis are like Nazis. He has led marches against Israel and has shouted out praise for the name of a terrorist leader. He has been an activist in numerous Islamic organizations that preach hatred for Jews and Israel.

    But governmental appointees of Shariah-compliant Muslims are drastically on the increase. In fact, it is in epidemic proportions. Do you want Shariah Law to replace our United States Constitution? Of course not. Then we must continue to fax every Member of the United States Congress to keep the pressure on!

Germany started a program similar to US green card a while ago through the 90s dot com boom and there were not many takers precisely because there was no path to citizenship. Their view was, ‘yeah we’ll give you a nice job and money but we don’t want you to ‘contaminate’ our culture by trying to become one of us’ — people didn’t want that. In many ways, most of the European countries are having a ‘Muslim’ problem, precisely because how they are (or their parents generation were) treated. At least that is one side of the story.

    Govt “reforming and collapsing” has a different meaning in parliamentary systems (which are used in most of Europe). Usually it’s just pretty much like when a different party takes control of our House or Senate, except that the new ‘government’ gets to elect a new Prime Minister too.

  62. Obama tries to stop execution in Texas of Mexican killer
    US president warns Texan authorities that execution would put America in breach of international legal obligations

Few question that he was responsible for the killing but the Texas authorities failed to tell Leal, who was born in Mexico and has lived in the US since the age of two, that under the Vienna convention he was entitled to contact the Mexican consulate when he was arrested….

    In a sign that lawmakers are growing increasingly anxious over a pending deadline to increase the nation’s borrowing limit, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was forced to withdraw a bipartisan measure endorsing U.S. military involvement in Libya in order to refocus the Senate on talks to raise the debt ceiling….

    Israel is Sitting Pretty

    By Ted Belman*

    Israel is sitting pretty. Sure she has problems, but her future is bright. Even her present is not too shabby.

    Of immediate concern, is the attempt by the PA to gain recognitions and membership in the UN in the upcoming session in September. To this end the PA has agreed with Hamas to unify, thinking it would strengthen their case at the UN. Not so fast. Actually unification is proving more difficult to achieve then implied, due to irreconcilable differences. These differences have more to do with tactics rather than goals, they both want to destroy the Jewish state, and to their unwillingness to share power. So, at last reading, they have decided to postpone concluding an agreement until after September, if ever.

    The most the PA can expect at the UN is recognition by the General Assembly, of Palestine with the ’49 armistice lines as borders. But such recognition will change nothing on the ground and will be meaningless. The US has made it clear that it will veto its admission to membership. Furthermore, Israel has succeeded, diplomatically, in turning the EU around on the matter of recognition. A few months ago, Britain, France and Germany were threatening Israel to accept the armistice lines as the basis for negotiations, failing which they would vote for recognition. Now they are lined up with the US and Israel in urging the PA not to go to the UN for recognition.

    Israel has successfully made the case that such a unilateral move by the PA would be a violation of the Oslo Accords which mandated no unilateral moves and a negotiated settlement. Israel has made it clear that such a move would result in unilateral moves by Israel and the end of the Oslo Accords. This means the end of the PA created pursuant to these accords. The primary unilateral move mooted by Israel is the extension of Israel law to the settlement blocs which would make the blocs sovereign territory of Israel. It would also replace occupation law over these territories. Many in Israel are demanding that Israel not stop there but that she should do the same for all of Area “C” over which she currently has full control pursuant to the Oslo Accords. These lands contain 300,000 Israelis and 10,000 Arabs. Israeli grassroots are now mobilizing a major campaign to increase Israeli support for such a move.

    The last thing the Quartet wants to see, is the end of the peace process because it’s control over Israel would also end. It prefers to keep Israel shackled to the Oslo Accords while it violates them by demanding Israel concede more that the Accords required. It also violates them by interfering in negotiations.

    Last I heard, Abbas is still determined to go the UN. If he does, he risks alienating the US and the EU and ending the PA and his job.

    The US and the EU have argued that the turmoil in the Middle East makes it all the more imperative that Israel make concessions for peace. But they have never made the case. Israel is not buying it and neither are independent thinkers. In fact Israel believes the opposite is true.

    The US will not allow the US-brokered peace agreement between Israel and Egypt to be abandoned by Egypt. A new poll conducted by Egypt’s ruling military regime showed that a 67 percent majority of Egyptians want to maintain their nation’s peace treaty with Israel. This contradicted an earlier poll which showed that 54% of Egyptians wanted to scrap the agreement.

    Israel Today commented,

    “There is speculation that the new poll conducted by the Egyptian regime could be rigged. Egypt receives a massive amount of American military aid as a condition of the Camp David Accord. But, the numbers could also show a shift in attitude.”

    The US has brought the Muslim Brotherhood in from the cold in the vain hope that it can be managed. Hamas is moving closer to Egypt and away from Syria in the belief that the Assad regime cannot last. This may or may not be problematic for Israel but it is certainly problematic for Jordan who needs Israel more than ever to protect it. In fact Jordan wants Israel to remain in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) because it’s in Jordan’s best interest that she does. When Jordan pushes the peace process she does so to pacify her citizens and to show Arab solidarity but she doesn’t mean it. Palestinian nationalism is a threat to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. She prefers the status quo, thank you very much.

    Syria is on the ropes and is expected to go down for the count. Turkey has been threatening to invade Syria ostensibly to set up a safe zone for refugees but she may remain there and perhaps end up controlling Syria and by extension, Lebanon. The US is coordinating all this with Turkey and Israel. Remember, Syria and Lebanon used to be part of the Ottoman Empire. The US and Saudi Arabia have been trying to separate Syria from Iran for years and this may just be the way to do it.

    At the same time, there are reports that the US is propping up the Assad regime by calling for it to talk with the opposition rather than calling for it to resign. Elliott Abrams is critical with this realpolitik and writes

    “That is bad enough, but realpolitik must then be judged by its logic and its fruits. There are none, except for undermining the moral position of the United States. To repeat what has been written here before, the Assad regime is an enemy of the United States. It has the blood of tens of thousands of Syrians on its hands but also of thousands of Americans, killed in Iraq by jihadis it led into Iraq for that purpose. It is Iran’s only Arab ally, and provides Iran with a Mediterranean port, a border with Israel through Hizballah, and an arms trafficking route from Iran to Hizballah. It supports and houses Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups. The fall of the Assad regime would be the greatest blow we can strike against Iran and its terrorist allies today.”

    Hopefully, the US will come to its senses and follow the Turkey option above set out. In fact, we see the fruits of the US coordinating efforts in the fact that Turkey did not back the current flotilla.

    A week ago Lebanon formed a new government dominated by Hizballah loyalists and pro-Syrian politicians. Thus Lebanon can be counted on to be a strong part of the Iran/Syria axis and Turkey is being rejected due to its restored alliance with the US.

    But Hezbollah is not home free. According to the leading Arab international daily, alsarq alawsat, it is under duress because the majority of Lebanese do not want a sharia state nor do they want Hezbollah to involve them in a devastating war with Israel. To make matters worse four top leaders of Hezbollah have just been indicted for killing Lebanon’s beloved PM Rafik Harari. Finally, Hezbollah may be losing her Syrian patron and has begun removing her arms stored in Syria.

    It remains to be seen how the Syrian/Hezbollah relationship develops. Will it strengthen or will it fall apart? Will Turkey, with US support, be passive or aggressive? Time will tell.

    Greece, who previously was totally in the Arab camp, switched sides in the last year. Israel and Greece have been warming relations since Israel’s relations with Turkey took a turn for the worse.. Israel plans to export gas to Europe through Greece and Israelis are vacationing in Greece rather than in Turkey. And now Greece has stopped the flotilla from leaving her ports, at least for now.

    Yesterday, the Quartet, in a surprise move, issued a statement in which it supported Israel and discouraged the flotilla.

    “The Quartet recognizes that Israel has legitimate security concerns that must continue to be safeguarded,”

    “Members of the Quartet are committed to working with Israel, Egypt and the international community to prevent the illicit trafficking of arms and ammunition into Gaza and believe efforts to maintain security while enabling movement and access for Palestinian people and goods are critical,”

    Good news, indeed.

    Saudi Arabia recently threatened to acquire nuclear weapons as a needed defense against Iran who will soon be nuclear. It is noteworthy that Israel has had the bomb for four decades but Saudi Arabia saw no need to acquire her own capability ‘til now. Israel was not perceived as a threat. Saudi Arabia no longer looks to the US for protection because it is not reliable. In any potential war with Iran, the Saudis see Israel as an ally.

    The Palestinians did not rise up against Israel because they had no reason to. They have more rights and economic well being than Arab citizens of Turkey, Syria, Jordan or Egypt.

    The primary threat to Israel is the possibility that Iran or its proxies will use WMD’s, be they chemical, biological or atomic, to bring Israel down even if it means their own destruction; the Samson option if you will. Will Israel pre-empt? Your guess is as good as mine. But one thing is certain. Neither Syria or Lebanon wants war with Israel because it will result in a massive defeat for them and the loss of power by Assad and Hezbollah.

    Even President Obama has been neutered by his campaign for reelection. His so called tough love has been put on hold until his second term which, judging by the polls, may not materialize. A Republican president is much more likely to stand with Israel.

    On the economic front, Israel is coming up roses. Her economy grew

    “by 4.7 percent last year according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development against an average of 2.8 for its member countries. The OECD forecast for Israel in 2011 is 5.4 percent.”

    Canada’s Globe and mail recently reported

    ”The London-based World Energy Council says Israel’s Shfela Basin, a half-hour drive south of Jerusalem, holds 250 billion barrels of recoverable shale oil, possibly making the energy-vulnerable country (as expressed by The Wall Street Journal) “the world’s newest energy giant.” With reserves of 260 billion barrels, Saudi Arabia would remain the world’s No. 1 oil country – though not, perhaps, for long. Howard Jonas, CEO of U.S.-based IDT Corp., the company that owns the Shfela Basin concession, says there is much more oil under Israel than under Saudi Arabia: Perhaps, he says, twice as much.”

    It concluded that Israel should be pumping oil within three to four years. Israel, it reported, “will match Canada in oil exports to the U.S. and thus free its long-time friend from needing to deal with tyrants”.

    This week Bloomberg reported,

    “The results for Sara and Myra follow other gas finds off Israel since 2009, including the Tamar and Leviathan discoveries that together hold an estimated 25 trillion cubic feet. The finds are sufficient to meet Israel’s domestic needs eventually and enable it to export gas, industry executives and government officials have said.”

    In effect, these resources will change the global balance of power.

    Yes, Israel is sitting pretty.

    Bill Clinton calls for corporate tax cut –
    By MIKE ALLEN | 7/3/11 2:03 PM EDT Updated: 7/5/11 6:44 AM EDT
    ASPEN, Colo. — President Bill Clinton says the nation’s corporate tax rate is “uncompetitive” and called for a lower rate as part of a “mega-deal” to raise the debt ceiling. “When I was president, we raised the corporate income-tax rates on corporations that made over $10 million [a year],” the former president told the Aspen Ideas Festival on Saturday evening.

    “It made sense when I did it. It doesn’t make sense anymore — we’ve got an uncompetitive rate. We tax at 35 percent of income, although we only take about 23 percent. So we should cut the rate to 25 percent, or whatever’s competitive, and eliminate a lot of the deductions so that we still get a fair amount, and there’s not so much variance in what the corporations pay. But how can they do that by Aug. 2?” Clinton also said Grover Norquist, who as president of Americans for Tax Reform is the GOP’s unofficial enforcer of no-new-taxes pledges, has a “chilling” hold on the nation’s lawmaking. The former president said it has seemed like Republicans need any revenue concessions to be “approved in advance by Grover Norquist.” “You’re laughing,” he told the crowd of 800. “But he was quoted in the paper the other day saying he gave Republican senators permission … on getting rid of the ethanol subsidies. I thought, ‘My God, what has this country come to when one person has to give you permission to do what’s best for the country.’ It was chilling.” Asked by moderator Ron Brownstein what President Obama’s posture should be on a debt deal if Republicans hold to their view that no new taxes can be included, Clinton replied: “Well, look, there are some spending cuts [Republicans] agree on, … and apparently they run it by a fair number of people in the Democratic caucuses … “He could take those, and an extension of the debt ceiling for six or eight months. But if they’re really going to reach a mega-deal, you cannot reach a mega-deal without doing something like what the Bowles-Simpson committee recommended. … I don’t see how you can do this by Aug. 2. …

    What little I know about the case- it appears the Dad framed the drama. He pointed to Casey’s unbecoming behavior after the fact to the other side- which, I find in and of itself, strange- Being the father of the accused and a homicide officer, he knowns pretty much how to manipulate the system dangling a carrot under the nose of the prosecutor. If the wily prosecutor took the bait, which he did- Knowing full well none of it in the end would point to his daughter as hard enough evidence to breach the threshold of ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. Another thing, it seems the child’s body was in the final stages of decomposition which is another flag leading to the hopelessness of gleaning any samples of dna again pointing to interaction with a male.

    Listening to the multitude of analysis this morning- Apparently, Casey and her Mom have a lifetime history of an adversarial relationship. This would fit in with the wife, a nurse, in denial failing to protect her child from a predatory husband claiming to the wife after years of Casey’s abuse in tears; “I know I’m sick, I’m trying to fix what is wrong with me” What do you want me to do? Get help and seek treatment? Then everyone will know, I’m filth- then what happens to us? Our lives ruined. Lose my job. Shunned by everyone in the neighborhood?…

    I don’t think this is over- I think Casey will eventually break and spill the beans and tell her story to a therapist or to someone that can help her..

Republicans never announced that little conundrum did they? Too busy reaping the profits and filling their pockets on the backs of a dumbed down citizenry.

  70. Why did your Department of Housing and Urban Development just give a $78K grant to ACORN?

    Judicial Watch: Obama Administration Issues $79,819 Grant to ACORN Offshoot in Apparent Violation of ACORN Funding Ban

    Grant Recipient, Affordable Housing Centers of America, Criticized in 2010 Inspector General Report for Misappropriating Federal Funds

    WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwire – Jul 5, 2011) – Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that that the Obama Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has issued a $79,819 grant to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN)-offshoot Affordable Housing Centers of America (AHCOA) in apparent violation of an ACORN funding ban passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in 2009. Moreover, this grant was provided to the organization less than a year after ACORN/ACHOA was criticized by HUD’s inspector general in two separate investigations for misappropriating funds from federal grants.

    On October 1, 2009, President Obama signed into law legislation known as the Defund ACORN Act that effectively prohibited the federal government from funding “ACORN and any ACORN-related affiliate.” Following a lawsuit filed by ACORN challenging the law, which passed both branches of Congress by wide margins, the federal courts in New York upheld the constitutionality of the funding ban on August 13, 2010. The Supreme Court last month refused to hear ACORN’s appeal of this funding ban.

    But a Judicial Watch investigation revealed that on March 1, 2011, HUD announced a $79,819 federal grant to ACHOA to “educate the public and housing providers about their rights and obligations under federal, state, and local fair housing laws.”

    Although the Government Accountability Office issued a controversial advisory opinion in September 2010 stating that ACHOA is a separate entity from ACORN and is therefore not subject to the funding ban, the government’s website listing federal expenditures identifies the organization receiving the $79,819 grant as “ACORN Housing Corporation Inc,” and lists ACORN’s New Orleans, Louisiana, address. Moreover ACHOA maintains the same board of directors, executive director and offices as its predecessor, ACORN Housing Corporation, Inc.

    Federal investigators have documented fraudulent activity on the part of ACORN Housing/ACHOA. For example, according to a September 21, 2010, HUD inspector general report, which notes that ACORN Housing is “now operating as Affordable Housing Centers of America,” the organization misappropriated funds from a $3,252,399 federal grant. The inspector general concluded that ACORN Housing/ACHOA had charged salary expenses to the HUD grant that “were not fully supported.” The organization also continued to pay its counselors even after they were terminated, did not meet federal procurement standards and allegedly destroyed documents to conceal the fraudulent activity.

    The inspector general articulated a number of benchmarks that must first be met by ACHOA before the organization could begin receiving any future federal funds, including reimbursing the government the misappropriated funds.

    A separate November 8, 2010, HUD inspector general report documented additional fraudulent activity by ACORN/ACHOA. The ACORN group “inappropriately expended more than $3.2 million from its fiscal years 2004 and 2005 grants for the elimination of lead poisoning in its housing program,” the report concluded. The misappropriation included the use of funds “not identified in its grant application’s detailed budgets,” including “campaign services” and “grant fundraising activities.”

    In November 2007, then-Senator Obama addressed ACORN and thanked the organization for its work. While Obama has denied that he had any involvement with ACORN other than some legal work he did for them in 1995, his statements in 2007 suggest otherwise. In Senator Obama’s own words, “I’ve been fighting alongside Acorn [sic] on issues you care about my entire career. Even before I was an elected official, when I ran Project Vote voter registration drive in Illinois, Acorn [sic] was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.” Barack Obama served as the Illinois executive director of Project Vote in 1992. His campaign paid more than $800,000 to an ACORN organization to help “get out the vote” in his successful primary campaign against then-Sen. Hillary Clinton.

    The New York Times reported in 2009 that “perhaps no administration official has had more interaction with Acorn [sic] than Mr. [Shaun] Donovan,” who is Obama’s Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The Times notes that Donovan “worked closely” with ACORN’s politically-powerful New York housing affiliate when he was a New York City housing official.

    “President Obama is truly the president from ACORN. So it is no surprise that his administration would continue to dole out tax dollars to an ACORN affiliate with a documented history of fraudulent activity,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “This is another instance of President Obama’s appointees stubbornly refusing to follow the law and deny this crooked organization funds. Is the Obama gang ensuring that ACORN is around to help them again in 2012?”

    (This year, HUD provided $40 million in grants to 108 “fair housing” organizations, representing a $13.2 million increase over the 2010 award. According to HUD’s press announcement, the general purpose of these grants is “to educate the public and combat housing and lending discrimination.”)

  72. Probe finds widespread cheating in Atlanta schools

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700149453/Probe-finds-widespread-cheating-in-Atlanta-schools.html

    ATLANTA — Educators at nearly four dozen Atlanta elementary and middle schools cheated on standardized tests by either helping students or changing the answers once exams were handed in, according to the results of a yearlong state investigation released Tuesday.

    The report said that 178 teachers and principals cheated, though only 82 educators actually confessed to misconduct dating as far back as 2001 and affecting thousands of school children, according to a synopsis handed out by Gov. Nathan Deal’s office. More than half of the district’s 100 schools were examined, and 44 of those had cheating, the synopsis said.

    The investigators also found a “culture of fear, intimidation and retaliation” in the school district over the cheating allegations, which lead to educators lying about the cheating or destroying documents to cover it up, according to the synopsis. School officials had “warnings” as early as 2005 that there was cheating on standardized tests, but those signals “were ignored,” according to the synopsis.

    Deal would not give out any further details or release the voluminous report because he said it contains “very specific information” about educators. The results of the investigation are being forwarded to prosecutors, and many of the cases could lead to criminal charges, he said.

    read on………..

    …………………..

    What is the country coming to when you cant even trust the educators, this really brings good techers and schools into disrepute. A sad day for good teachers everywhere.

  73. I mean for God’s sake, i thought it was the students who are supposed to do the cheating, gone are the days when a kid would look over someones shoulder or notes were passed, now the teachers are doing it for them instead, sure why bother going to school, just get the teacher to write up the exam paper. I despair.

  74. Obama’s Iraq Pledge Reaches Its Expiration Date

    Obama’s statement, February 27, 2009: “I intend to remove all U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2011. We will complete this transition to Iraqi responsibility, and we will bring our troops home with the honor that they have earned.”

    The news today:

    The White House is offering to keep up to 10,000 troops in Iraq next year, U.S. officials say, despite opposition from many Iraqis and key Democratic Party allies who demand that President Barack Obama bring home the American military as promised.

    I suppose this news will be greeted with a shrug; Obama said that combat in Iraq is over, and the public appears to believe him, even though the facts on the ground are not quite the same.

    On August 31, 2010, Obama said in an Oval Office address that “the American combat mission in Iraq has ended.”

    Since Obama declared that the U.S. combat mission had ended nearly a year ago, 31 American servicemen have been killed by hostile fire, grenades, improvised explosive devices, rocket attacks, and sniper fire in Iraq.

  75. Personally, I think the Repubs futzing around with balanced budget amendments is a loser. Because they will just spend the money anyway, then come to us after the fact and say they “have” to raise taxes, because the law requires them to.

    What I’d like to see is total govt spending limited to X percent of GDP. That would effectively limit their spending, and would have the added benefit of FORCING the congresscritters to do things to get the private sector economy moving if they wanted more money. Get the economy (not just bankers balance sheets) booming, and you’ll have plenty of dough to spend. It’s a win-win to me. If the country does well, then all their pet projects do well. Gives the fuckers incentive.

    You could always allow that the limit could be exceeded in a given year with a 2/3 majority vote if its a real national emergency or catastrophic fiscal crisis.

  76. Alaskan pipeline oil is shipped to Japan. A caveat in the original bill designates emergency measures should oil/gasoline become a crisis. The release of the Oil Reserves is proof there is a crisis. So why hasn’t Alaskan oil been diverted to US refineries until further notice? It’s a rhetorical question. The answer is simple, whoever is making money from the way things are has the power to keep things the same.. irregardless of the problems facing Americans.

  77. The Inconvient Truth About Ethanol

    “But as a gasoline substitute, ethanol has big problems: Its energy density is one-third less than gasoline, which means you have to burn more of it to get the same amount of power. It also has a nasty tendency to absorb water, so it can’t be transported in existing pipelines and must be distributed by truck or rail, which is tremendously inefficient.”

    “Ethanol production in the United States does not benefit the nation’s energy security, its agriculture, the economy, or the environment,” according to the study by Cornell’s David Pimentel and Berkeley’s Tad Patzek. They conclude the country would be better off investing in solar, wind and hydrogen energy.”

    “The researchers included such factors as the energy used in producing the crop, costs that were not used in other studies that supported ethanol production, said Pimentel.”

    ::snip::

    “Another misconception is that ethanol is green. In fact, corn production depends on huge amounts of fossil fuel — not just the diesel needed to plow fields and transport crops, but also the vast quantities of natural gas used to produce fertilizers. Runoff from industrial-scale cornfields also silts up the Mississippi River and creates a vast dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico every summer. What’s more, when corn ethanol is burned in vehicles, it is as dirty as conventional gasoline and does little to solve global warming: E85 reduces carbon dioxide emissions by a modest fifteen percent at best, while fueling the destruction of tropical forests and is also unfit for conventional gasoline engines.”

    Accused Fort Hood Shooter to Have Military Trial, Will Face Death Penalty

    DEVELOPING: The Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly Fort Hood rampage in Texas will be court-martialed and face the death penalty, Fox News confirms.

    Fort Hood’s commanding general announced the decision Wednesday for Maj. Nidal Hasan.
    The 40-year-old is expected to appear in a Fort Hood courtroom for an arraignment and could enter a plea.

    Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the November 2009 shooting spree at the Army post.

    Hasan’s lead attorney, John Galligan, had urged the commanding general not to seek the death penalty, saying such cases were more costly, time-consuming and restrictive.

    Two Army colonels previously recommended that Hasan be tried in a military court and face the death penalty.

  79. Barack Obama on raising the debt ceiling in 2006 (which he voted against) Evidently, massive debt is only an issue when it’s the other guys doing it:

    The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

    That was about 6 trillion ago. If the Republicans had a brain in their heads, they would be reading that passionate condemnation aloud at every opportunity, in every TV interview.

    Why Obama won’t ditch Biden for Cuomo in 2012
    By Aaron Blake

    For the second time this year, there is chatter about President Obama picking a new running mate for his 2012 reelection campaign.

    First, it was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton switching roles with Vice President Joe Biden. Now, it’s Obama dumping Biden for the hottest thing on the national political scene, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

    It’s fun speculation — and the Fix loves political speculation — but it’s completely unfounded at this point.(Cuomo, as would be expected, has already said he won’t replace Biden.)

    But where is the chatter coming from — and why?

    The reason for the speculation is relatively obvious.

    The 68-year-old Biden is the rare vice president that doesn’t appear to be a future presidential candidate himself. (Although he is the second straight veep — following Dick Cheney — to have little future political ambition.) And by keeping him on the ticket, Democrats may be missing an opportunity to groom a future presidential candidate and get ready for 2016.

    Cuomo seems like the most likely person to fill that role right now. Extremely ambitious and popular since his days as attorney general, he’s got the makings of a presidential prospect — heck, we’ve already speculated about whether he is the 2016 frontrunner — and broke nationally in a major way by shepherding the state’s new gay marriage law to passage. In theory, Cuomo could help Obama with Democratic base and give the party a fresh face to get excited about.

    Though you can make a credible case for the swap, it’s just not going to happen. Here’s why.

    First, presidents don’t generally switch running mates unless there is an obvious reason to do so. While the practice happened relatively frequently in the 1800s, only one president in the 1900s – Franklin Roosevelt – switched running mates for his reelection campaign.

    Richard Nixon switched vice presidents, but he only installed Gerald Ford as his vice president after his 1972 reelection campaign (Spiro Agnew resigned amid scandal). After Ford became president, he ran for a full term with Bob Dole rather than the man he had chosen to be his vice president, Nelson Rockefeller.

    Second, Biden is reasonably popular. Say what you want about the vice president – gaffe-prone, a little loose with the tongue, not always on the same page as the president – the bottom line is: Biden has not proven to be a liability and, particularly in matters of foreign policy, is clearly a trusted adviser.

    Biden doesn’t have fantastic poll numbers, but he’s in much better shape than Dick Cheney was. Remember that President George W. Bush, in his memoir, said there was some talk about dumping Cheney for his 2004 reelection bid. If Bush didn’t abandon Cheney then and still won, why would Obama dump Biden now?

    Biden was chosen as an agreeable elder statesman that few would object to. And he still fits that mold.

    Third, Cuomo could use more time. Democrats say the McCain campaign’s decision to pluck Sarah Palin from obscurity so early in her term as governor of Alaska backfired. So why would they then pick Cuomo, less than two years into his own governorship of one of the biggest states in the union? The vice presidency is a great launching pad, but having just two years under his belt as a governor would not assure Cuomo any kind of frontrunner status in the 2016 Democratic primary.

    Fourth, and most importantly, a switcheroo of the vice presidential nominee would reek of panic — of the Obama team looking to shuffle the pieces on the chess board in order to pull off a victory in November 2012.

    Given where the race stands at the moment, that would be a considerable overreaction. The state of the economy clearly imperils Obama’s reelection chances, but he’s not in need of throwing the sort of “Hail Mary” pass that swapping vice presidents signals.

    Add to all that the fact that people vote for the president, not the running mate, and the swap scenario makes almost no sense.

    The Cuomo/Clinton speculation is a fun political parlor game, but there’s no reason to believe there’s anything behind it right now.

    ……………………………….

    I’m sorry but this guy is soooo far off on his reasoning, i have to laugh.

    Justice Department Obstructing ‘Fast and Furious’ Gun Probe, ATF Director Says

    The Justice Department is obstructing the congressional investigation of a U.S. law enforcement operation intended to crack down on major weapons traffickers on the Southwest border, according to the embattled leader of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

    Ken Melson, the acting director of the ATF, lobbed the accusation when he sneaked in for an interview with congressional investigators on July 4, two days ahead of his scheduled interview with the inspector general about the operation known as “Fast and Furious,” Fox News has learned.

    “If his account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand,” Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Eric Holder. “That approach distorted the truth and obstructed our investigation.”

    The Justice Department is reportedly looking to oust Melson, who has been acting ATF director since April 2009, as the agency deals with its biggest scandal in nearly two decades. Andrew Traver, who was tapped in November by President Obama to become the permanent ATF director, could be named as acting director until the Senate acts on his nomination, sources have said.

    In a separate development, congressional sources have learned that not only was U.S. taxpayer money being used to buy guns that were later sent to Mexico, but the main target of the investigation was actually a FBI informant and former drug dealer who had been deported years ago.

    “Fast and Furious” has been at the center of an investigation by Issa and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa. The operation began in the fall of 2009 as an effort to trace and stop the trafficking of illegal guns on the Southwest border, but instead allowed thousands of guns to get into the hands of Mexican cartel members.

    The two say they learned about the program after Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in December 2010. At the crime scene were two guns linked to the “Fast and Furious” operation.

    At an Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing last month, three federal firearms investigators testified that they wanted to “intervene and interdict” loads of guns, but were repeatedly ordered to step aside to allow suspected smugglers to carry the weapons over the border.

    Issa and Grassley have urged Holder to cooperate and turn over subpoenaed records that would reveal the scope of the government coverup.

    The alleged coverup involves three law enforcement agencies: the ATF, FBI and the DEA, or Drug Enforcement Administration.

    According to sources, unbeknown to the ATF, the target of their operation was a FBI confidential informant, a fact that only became known to them in April of this year after an 18-month investigation that cost millions of dollars of tax dollars.

    “They were going after someone they could never have,” a source in Washington told Fox News. “The Mr. Big they wanted was using government money to buy guns that went to the cartels. The FBI knew it and didn’t tell them.”

    The confidential informant is a former high-level drug dealer who had been deported by the DEA. The FBI, however, recruited him as a counter-terrorism informant, providing information on potential dirty bombs or Al Qaeda suspects moving through the border region.

    The FBI informant was picked up on a DEA wiretap, and forwarded to the ATF.

    Obama tries to stop execution in Texas of Mexican killer…
    The argument in Texas is that there is no law that says they have to do anything for a suspect except Miranda. Then the court appoints a lawyer if cannot afford one. His legal team did not contact the consulate either supposedly because he had been in the US since the age of two and had no contact with Mexico. This was dreamed up by his appeals team which was also paid for by taxpayers. The consulate does nothing except object to the death penalty. I would think that a law that says a foreign national can contact an embassy or consulate upon arrest and they can provide legal representation instead of US taxpayers would be welcome. Then the state might listen to objections on sentencing.

  83. Mormaer, the argument is that if we deny a Mexican citizen the right to their consulate, then American citizens in similar situations could be denied theirs.

    I say that we need to announce: “If an American citizen goes into another country and lives there illegally all his life, and never has any contact with the US, then commits a horrible violent crime, the we are PERFECTLY okay with you frying his ass without consulting us.”

    Why Hillary should have been the next UN chief

    It is an out-there idea. But it is a good one.

    Instead of earlier this month supporting the reappointment of Ban Ki-Moon as UN Secretary-General for another five years, the United States should have nominated Hillary Clinton as his successor.

    The 66-year-old Ban is due to finish his first term at the end of this year. Known for his distinctively bland style of quiet diplomacy, the former South Korean foreign minister’s time at the top has hardly caused headlines.

    To many, Ban’s fate as one of the worst secretary-generals in history was sealed last year when he failed to congratulate Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo or call for his release from jail, including during a meeting with Chinese president Hu Jintao.

    In contrast, Hillary has surprised many since losing the Democratic presidential nomination working hard to recast herself as a team player and has quickly developed a reputation as the most artful diplomat in recent history.

    Not since Henry Kissinger has the United States had such a powerful and prominent voice on the world stage. Against a team sheet of Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright and James Baker this says a lot.

    The UN has long toyed with the idea of a female chief.

    A 1977 General Assembly resolution called for a greater recognition of gender equality in the selection of the secretary general. And while the UN has a woman at the top of not just, predictably, its gender program; but also its humanitarian, development, auditing, legal and police outfits, it is yet to break that final glass ceiling.

    Different names have been floated along the way.

    From the current playing field this includes former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and the former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark as well as Radhika Coomaraswamy from Sri Lanka, Graça Machel from Mozambique and Margot Wallström from Sweden. Most of them now work for the UN in different capacities.

    While Hillary is the strongest candidate on paper, this is not to say her path to Turtle Bay would have been smooth sailing.

    Officially, the job is filled through an election by the entire General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council. In reality it is the five permanent veto-wielding members – the United States, United Kingdom, China, France and Russia – that choose who gets the top job.

    While Ban’s appointment was passed earlier this month there is still time for a viable alternative to rock the boat and force his hand.

    It is generally considered a matter of practice that the permanent members do not nominate their own nationals for the role. But Hillary would be bolstered by the fact that there has been a secretary-general from every major region besides North America.

    There is also a tendency to avoid high-profile candidates that are often touted for the job. Charles de Gaulle, Dwight Eisenhower and Sir Anthony Eden were all considered to become the first secretary-general.

    Bill Clinton was also widely understood to be chasing the role, arranging deals with Al Gore and John Kerry during their presidential runs. During the height of the Oil-For-Food crisis that plagued the then boss, Kofi Annan, some suggested Bill Clinton had gone so far as to secure the support of the all-important United Kingdom and France along with Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria, Morocco and Egypt and possibly Ecuador, Brazil and India. The Russians were also understood to have agreed not to veto Bill’s candidature and the Chinese seemed to love him. You would expect similar support for Hillary at a minimum.

    Revelations by WikiLeaks that Hillary, in line with her predecessor Condoleezza Rice, ordered American diplomats to spy on UN representatives to obtain personal information, including the Secretary General, will not help her case.

    But the Obama administration’s increased support and recognition of the UN will.

    Under Hillary’s watch, the United States appointed Susan Rice – a contender for Secretary of State in her own right – as Ambassador to the UN and elevated the role to Cabinet level in the process. Hundreds of millions of dollars in arrears between 2005 and 2008 were also coughed up despite the financial crisis, along with annual contributions totalling over a quarter of the UN’s entire budget. The United States also joined the Human Rights Council and Obama became the first president to chair the Security Council in September 2009. All this marking a sharp departure from the Bush-Bolton era.

    Hillary, who turns 64 later this year, clearly has an itch to continue to serve.

    “This is a moment in history where it is almost hard to catch your breath,” she said recently.

    Some have suggested that aside from a tilt at the 2016 nomination she might run for governor in New York or Arkansas in 2014. Rumours a few weeks ago suggested she was eyeing off the World Bank presidency at the end of next year. But Hillary has made it clear that in the future she hopes to help advance the cause of women and children around the world.

    So what better way to do that than as the world’s chief diplomat?

  96. From Gay Patriot blog – this is concerning:

    Lost in last month’s Weinergate nonsense was Obama’s June 9th signing of Executive Order 13575, which bears eerily close resemblance to a United Nations program known as “Agenda 21.”

    For those of you unfamiliar, Agenda 21 is a two-decade old, grand plan for global ’Sustainable Development,’ brought to you by the good people over at the UN. George H.W. Bush (thanks a bunch, George) and 177 world leaders agreed to it back in 1992, and in 1995, Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 12858, creating a Presidential Council on ‘Sustainable Development.’ This effectively injected the central planning virus into America’s large, churning government machine without the need for any review or discussion by Congress or the American people.

    Now, “sustainable development,” on it’s face, sounds harmless enough, until you consider just what it is Agenda 21 purports to accomplish, given the UN’s long-held hostility to the idea of “private property:”

    Land… cannot be treated as an ordinary asset, controlled by individuals and subject to the pressures and inefficiencies of the market. Private land ownership is also a principal instrument of accumulation and concentration of wealth and therefore contributes to social injustice; if unchecked, it may become a major obstacle in the planning and implementation of development schemes. The provision of decent dwellings and healthy conditions for the people can only be achieved if land is used in the interest of society as a whole.

    Obama’s antitrust cop to step down

    President Obama’s top antitrust cop, Christine Varney, is stepping down from her post to join a prestigious law firm, according to a person familiar with the matter.

    Varney came into her job with high expectations that she would launch landmark cases against increasingly dominant firms such as Google. But she leaves for a senior position at Cravath, Swaine & Moore amid disappointment from some antitrust watchers and consumer advocates who say the Justice Department has been too soft on industry giants.

    Under Varney, the Justice Department approved the controversial marriage of Ticketmaster and LiveNation, Google’s acquisition of a powerful travel software firm, and NBC’s merger with Comcast. In each of these instances, Varney tried attaching limits on how the companies could behave.

    In 2008, Varney said at a discussion sponsored by the American Antitrust Institute that Microsoft was “so last century” and that Google could be a potential problem, a remark that appeared to set the tone for an aggressive tenure.

    Ultimately, the Federal Trade Commission, rather than the Justice Department, took on the task of launching a broader investigation into the search giant.

    It’s ridiculous to say that simple ID is an undue burden. We use simple ID for every damn thing we do in this country. 105. The Ulsterman Report: A Metaphor for The Death of The Republican Party

    Yep, I said it. Death. Everything has its time and the Republican’s time has come. Ulsterman, an often odd and controversial writer for the Triond group sums it up with every off the wall head line and unbelievable, sensational, fear-mongering article. Death for the Republican party in two words, three syllables. Tea-Party.

    The Tea-party holds many things dear that the foundations of the Republican party was built on-states rights over federal, conservative family values that often means Christianity, and fiscal conservatism. What it doesn’t seem to have is the ability to function in our present form of government. The problem with this wing of the Republican party is the absolute lack of ability to compromise. They actually see that as their biggest asset, the best trait they have, and so did the voting public in the last US election. Not give on any ground, no matter how small. The result?

    Government has ground to a halt in many states, and soon on the federal level as the debt ceiling looms less than a month away and the federal budget once again undecided. The tea party sits in a corner like a sulking child screaming ‘NO!’ while the only work that actually gets done will be by the group most likely to try to meet others in the middle. In a democracy good legislation is that which no one interest group will particularly like, but that which no one will completely hate either. A compromise.

    The American people, a fickle lot at best, will take out there frustration on those they perceive to be behind their misfortune. In this case it will be the party in power of the legislative branch, the Republicans. It won’t matter that the Republicans aren’t all cut from the same Tea Party cloth. It will only matter that the voters blame them and vote them away. Ulsterman doesn’t realize it, but his fear mongering and sensational headlines about the destruction of life as we know it because of a Democratic President won’t just get a different president. It will get us a whole new party in our two party system. The do nothing but bitch about it Tea Party party. When they comprise the entirety of the Republican Party the Democrats will easily win back both houses and the presidency, because really, who is going to vote for a bunch of whiner babies?

    “Former President Bill Clinton Wednesday compared GOP efforts to limit same-day voter registration and block some convicted felons from voting to Jim Crow laws and poll taxes.

    “I can’t help thinking since we just celebrated the Fourth of July and we’re supposed to be a country dedicated to liberty that one of the most pervasive political movements going on outside Washington today is the disciplined, passionate, determined effort of Republican governors and legislators to keep most of you from voting next time,” Clinton said at Campus Progress’s annual conference in Washington.

    “There has never been in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the Jim Crow burdens on voting, the determined effort to limit the franchise that we see today,” Clinton added.

    Clinton mentioned Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s move in March to overturn past state precedent — including under former GOP governors — that allows convicted felons to vote once they’ve served they’ve finished probation periods.

    “Why should we disenfranchise people forever once they’ve paid their price?” Clinton said. “Because most of them in Florida were African Americans and Hispanics who tended to vote for Democrats. That’s why.”

    He also cited the New Hampshire proposal — which is currently stymied by a veto from Democratic Gov. John Lynch – that would stop college students who are from other states from registering to vote where they go to school.

    Other states with powerful new GOP majorities have also drawn fire for their recent proposals to change voting laws.

    Ohio Gov. John Kasich is expected to sign a bill that eliminates several early voting options and also eliminates a week-long period when voters could register and cast ballots at the same time. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a law in May requiring voters to show identification at the polls and to have lived in their ward 28 days before the election.

    And Maine Gov. Paul LePage last month approved a bill that negates a 38-year old law allowing same-day registration.

    “Why is all of this going on? This is not rocket science. They are trying to make the 2012 electorate look more like the 2010 electorate than the 2008 electorate,” Clinton said.

    Chris Jankowski, president of the Republican State Leadership Committee, pushed back against Clinton’s charge that the GOP is out to keep people from making it to the voting booth.

    “It’s just not fair to paint all these proposals with the same broad brush,” he said.

    “The Republican legislative majorities and their governors around the country are standing up for the integrity of the election process,” he added. “We support everyone who is entitled to vote to vote. And to take issue with that, to be opposed to that principle means you’re actually supporting illegal voting.”

    Jankowski also said that turnout is fair game in politics. “Each party is free to do everything they should and possibly can to turn out their voters,” he said.

    Carolyn Fiddler, communications director for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, welcomed Clinton’s remarks on an issue her organization has been closely tracking. “It’s such a serious issue, and it’s exciting to know Clinton is speaking out on it,” she said

    In a speech to liberal youth activists Wednesday, the former president called out proposals in battleground states like Florida and Ohio that could limit the voter rolls.

  110. http://thehill.com/opinion/columnists/dick-morris/169715-obama-losing-jewish-voters

    If the election were held today, President Obama would get only 56 percent of the Jewish vote against a generic Republican candidate, down from the 78 percent he won in 2008 and less than the 74 percent John Kerry received in 2004.

    This is the key finding of a survey of 1,000 Jewish voters I conducted from June 20-27 using telephone and Internet interviews. After asking basic questions of the entire sample, I proceeded to drill down with more detailed questions for the Jews in the sample who identified themselves as Democrats. The overall survey has a 95 percent confidence of a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

    Triggering the increasing Jewish disaffection with Obama is opposition to his proposal that an Israeli return to ’67 borders be the starting point of peace negotiations. By 10-83, Jewish voters opposed the plan. Jewish Democrats opposed it by 10-67. Asked if President Obama is “too biased against Israel,” Jewish voters as a whole agreed with the charge by 39-30, while 32 percent of Jewish Democrats also agreed (and 40 percent of Jewish Democrats disagreed).

    Jews who identified themselves as Democrats also said:

    • By 37-47, they do not think Obama is “doing a good job of promoting peace in the Middle East.”

    • By 43-42, they break evenly on whether Obama “is being too tough on Israel.”

    • By 61-30, Jewish Democrats think the president “is naïve in thinking that he can make peace with the Arabs.”

    The survey probed the issue of 1967 borders in greater depth, reading Jewish Democrats a statement giving both sides of the issue:

    read on, plenty more in it.

  111. My mistake, Mrs. Smith. I stand corrected. I am very relieved that he is not talking about voter ID. The other things I could have a quibble with, so I won’t get pissed at him about that.

    I am, however, still disappointed that he used the race card to argue against it.

    I thought so- usually your posts are spot on. The race card? You mean when he said, Hispanics and African Americans here?

    I think it is a fact statistically Hispanics and AA’s tend to vote with the Democrats. I don’t think Bill Clinton used these ethnic terms as a slur. I took his quote said with a bit of anger aimed at Republicans calling them on their little game.

  113. FAST AND FURIOUS” BLOWS SKY-HIGH

    Holy Mary……………………………

    This morning, there was a stunning development in Congress’s investigation of the Justice Department’s “Fast and Furious” gun-running program: it was revealed that on July 4, Kenneth Melson, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Obama administration’s intended fall guy in the scandal, broke ranks with his superiors. Without their knowledge, he gave an interview to Darrell Issa’s House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, accompanied only by his personal attorney. While a transcript of that interview is not yet public, it is clear that he blew the whistle on senior officials in the Justice Department.

    This morning, Issa and Senator Charles Grassley released a letter that they sent yesterday to Attorney General Eric Holder. It is explosive, to say the least. You should read it in its entirety; here are some excerpts:

    Yesterday, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson participated in a transcribed interview regarding Operation Fast and Furious and related matters with both Republican and Democratic staff. He appeared with his personal counsel, Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods LLP. His interview had originally been scheduled through the Justice Department to occur on July 13 in the presence of DOJ and ATF counsel. As you know, however, under our agreement Department witnesses who choose to attend a voluntary interview with their own lawyer are free to exercise that right rather than participate with counsel representing the Department’s interests.

    After being made aware of that provision of our agreement, Acting Director Melson chose to exercise that right and appeared with his own lawyer. We are disappointed that no one had previously informed him of that provision of the agreement. Instead, Justice Department officials sought to limit and control his communications with Congress.

    DOJ’s effort to cover up the Fast and Furious scandal is one of the letter’s themes.

  115. Thanks Moon for posting a ray of hope that may impeach Holder and Obama.

    God, whoever wrote up the Department’s agreement deserves “The Medal of Freedom!’

  116. Read the letter from Issa and my guess Holder’s will be cleaning his shorts out. Sooner or later Holder better realise he is going under the bus, this scandal is looking more and more like its going to become a special prosecutors territory. All bets are off for 2012 if that happens.

  117. Talk about manipulation. Soros has the Secretarys of State in all the battleground states in his pocket just in case we face a Bush vs Gore scenario again. Where SOS Katherine Harris was instrumental in using her discretionary power for disallowing counting votes in democratic precincts that subsequently gave Fla’s electoral votes to Republicans. Now the Republicans are using Governorships to selectively disenfranchise voters who will vote Democratically.

    Yep, I’m going to right now- They had better encase ATF Director Melson in cotton batting and put him in the safest house in the US… This is way worse than WaterGate and a heck of alot more dangerous for the witnesses.

  119. By what I’ve read, Obama’s fall guy has decided not to go under the bus quietly and has gone to Issa with his PERSONAL attorney, not the DOJ’s, which can only mean one thing, he’s dropped Holder’s ass in the shit and Issa just let Holder know that he’s about to open a can of whoopass on him.

    “The evidence gathered by Issa’s oversight committee suggests that the Obama administration may actually have financed the purchases of firearms by known criminals, which then wound up in the hands of Mexican gangs and were involved in murders, including the murder of an American border patrol agent:

    The evidence we have gathered raises the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities. While this is preliminary information, we must find out if there is any truth to it. According to Acting Director Melson, he became aware of this startling possibility only after the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and the indictments of the straw purchasers, which we now know were substantially delayed by the u.s. Attorney’s Office and Main Justice.”

    More federal agencies implicated in gun-trafficking controversy
    The head of the ATF says the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration kept him in the dark about their role in the operation that allowed guns to escape untracked into the hands of Mexican criminals.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-naw-atf-guns-20110707,0,6997495.story

    Kenneth Melson, the ATF’s acting director, has been under pressure to resign over the agency’s handling of the gun-trafficking operation, known as Fast and Furious. But in two days of meetings with investigators, Melson disclosed that other law enforcement agencies had a connection to the operation. His statements sharply ratcheted up the affair, and strongly suggested that House and Senate investigations, as well as an internal review by the Justice Department, will widen.

    “Our investigation has clearly expanded,” one source close to the investigation said Wednesday. “We know now it was not something limited to just a small group of ATF agents in Arizona.”

    Under Fast and Furious, the ATF allowed straw purchases of weapons — in which a person buys guns on behalf of someone else who cannot legally buy them — ostensibly to trace the guns back to Mexican drug cartels. The agency lost track of the guns, and many were found at the scene of crimes in Mexico, including two that were recovered at the site of a U.S. Border Patrol agent’s killing.

    According to Melson, some of the Mexican drug cartel leaders being targeted were paid informants working for the FBI and DEA. Those agencies never shared that crucial information with the ATF, he said, telling investigators that if ATF agents had known of the relationships, the agency might have ended the investigation much earlier.

    Melson was to have met with investigators on July 13 accompanied by ATF and Justice Department attorneys. Instead, he met with them Sunday and over the Fourth of July holiday and brought his personal lawyer along.

    Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) and Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), told Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. in a letter Tuesday that “this whole misguided operation might have been cut short if not for catastrophic failures to share key information.”

    Ronald Welch, assistant attorney general for legislative affairs, responded Wednesday to the Issa-Grassley letter by saying Justice Department officials were still discussing how to provide any “sensitive law enforcement information” regarding the FBI and the DEA to congressional investigators. Without specifically acknowledging that cartel leaders were paid informants, he said their main focus is “how best to protect ongoing investigations.”

    “Like you,” he told them, “the department is deeply interested in understanding the facts surrounding Operation Fast and Furious.”

    Mexican authorities have long complained that most of the guns that fuel the drug wars there are purchased in the U.S.

    On Wednesday, Mexican federal police released a videotaped interrogation with recently captured Jesus Rejon Aguilar, an alleged founder of the Zetas gang there who is wanted in the slaying of a U.S. immigration agent in Mexico. He brazenly told them that “all the weapons are bought in the United States” and that “even the American government itself was selling the weapons.”

    He added, “Whatever you want, you can get.”

    Issa and Grassley said that over the holiday weekend Melson “was candid in admitting mistakes that his agency made.”

    They said he told them he personally reviewed hundreds of documents about Fast and Furious and became “sick to his stomach when he obtained those documents and learned the full story.”

    Melson said ATF agents had witnessed the transfer of weapons from straw purchasers to others “without following the guns any further,” contradicting statements by the Justice Department that they did follow through.

    Sources both on Capitol Hill and at the ATF said Melson did not volunteer the information about the FBI and DEA informants. Rather, they said, he “corroborated” it when congressional investigators told him other sources have said the FBI and DEA had a role in why Fast and Furious continued for months.

    Issa and Grassley were clearly upset over the revelation.

    “The evidence we have gathered raises the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities,” they said in their letter to Holder.

    “According to Acting Director Melson, he became aware of this startling possibility only after the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and the indictments of the straw purchasers.” Terry was killed when a gun battle erupted in December along a smuggling route in Arizona near the border with Mexico.

    Melson’s attorney, Richard Cullen, a former federal prosecutor and state attorney general in Virginia, declined in an interview Wednesday to elaborate except to say that the letter accurately reflects Melson’s comments to the investigators.

    Cullen said Melson volunteered to speak with the committee because “he was anxious to get the facts out about the program.” He added that no one “in the leadership” at the Justice Department has told him to resign.

    “He just wants the facts to be known by people in authority,” Cullen said. “He’s eager to be as cooperative in any official inquiry as he possibly can.”

    Sources said the congressional investigators “confronted” Melson with evidence that the FBI and DEA were not cooperating with the ATF, and it was at that point that “Mr. Melson’s responses tended to corroborate what others had said.”

    They said investigators have “very real indications from several sources” that some of the cartel leaders the ATF was trying to identify through Fast and Furious were “already known” to the other agencies and apparently had “been paid as informants.”

    Finally, Melson said, ATF agents along the U.S.-Mexico border realized that the FBI and DEA were running separate operations and that it “could have a material impact on Fast and Furious.” Melson said he notified his superiors of this problem in April.

    The congressional leaders also noted the pressure Melson has felt to resign, and they warned Holder not to make Melson the sole “fall guy” in Fast and Furious.

  123. If, as this story suggests, the straw buyers and smugglers were informants or operatives of the DEA and FBI, unbeknown to the ATF, the Gunwalker conspiracy just got broader, higher and more evil. What Melson is suggesting here, beyond embracing his own incompetence in favor of his own culpability, is that the ATF was the unwitting tool in a larger conspiracy. “Just shut up, let the guns walk and track them after they turn up in Mexico, and other people will handle what happens in the middle.”

    Melson’s claim is nothing less than a declaration of war on the FBI and DEA, and they will defend themselves. Expect more revelations to come from that internecine process. If Melson is right, it also implicates DHS, the National Security Agency and the White House, for the larger operation would not, could not, have proceeded without authorization and coordination from the top.

  124. When the various committees of Congress finally get around to investigating “Project Gunwalker” and where it came from, it would seem to me that Dan Restrepo would be a good witness to put under oath. He was the original architect of the Obama Mexico policies while still at the Center for American Progress, and has been in the National security Council with an eagle’s eye view of things ever since. We know that this scandal involved considerable inter-agency sharing of information and actions. Such bureaucratic operations across jurisdictional lines require a coordinator, someone at the level of the National Security Council, an Oliver North for example, to oversee the various parts.

    Is Dan Restrepo the Oliver North of the Gunwalker Scandal?

    Let’s ask him.

  131. WOLF: ‘No drama’ Obama losing his cool

    White House shows early signs of re-election panic

    By Dr. Milton R. Wolf
    The Washington Times
    Wednesday, July 6, 2011

    Something unexpected happened along the president’s breezy cruise to re-election. “No drama” Obama is suddenly looking about as calm as Jerry Lewis in a French film, about as brave as Ted Kennedy after an evening drive through Chappaquiddick. Witness Team Obama’s recent panicky behavior.

    Obamanomics anxiety. The White House is reeling as its reverse Midas touch to the economy is being exposed. Its own economists acknowledge now that each job created or “saved” by the so-called “stimulus” cost taxpayers a whopping $278,000. This is still fantasyland because there are 1.9 million fewer jobs on record now than on the day the stimulus was signed into law, but nonetheless, the quiet pre-holiday Friday night news dump of an announcement reveals the administration’s worry. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke admitted last month that he’s clueless why America’s economic malaise continues. Tax cheat and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, who called President Obama’s budget “unsustainable,” wants to abandon ship along with the rest of the “economic dream team” escapees: Lawrence H. Summers, Christina Romer and Austan Goolsbee. Meanwhile, the president, apparently believing no news is good news, has put his fingers in his ears – “La la la, I cannot hear you” – and, at one point, canceled his daily economic briefings.

    Obamacare waivers wild ride. That the White House would exempt its best friends from Obamacare underscores everything you need to know not only about the deeply flawed health care takeover itself but also about the White House’s embrace of cronyism. Team Obama vigorously defended those waivers right up until the moment when political expediency forced the president to wave them goodbye. About 1,400 “Get out of jail free” cards later, he thinks you will forget that his union friends were exempted from the rules you must follow. Parenthetically, look for those waivers to return quietly at some point under a new Obama Ministry of Truth name. Perhaps in accordance with the creative euphemism the administration chose for its Libyan war, it will call them “kinetic medical actions.”

    Afghanistan retreat. The “war of necessity” of 2008 has become the retreat of political expediency of 2012, timed oh so conveniently for the eve of the election. Rejecting his own generals’ advice is certainly within a commander in chief’s prerogative, but when the White House falsely claims that the withdrawal plan was offered by Gen. David H. Petraeus when it was not – according to the testimony of Marine Lt. Gen. John R. Allen – the White House reveals its panic. What’s more, the transparent attempt to placate Mr. Obama’s base among the anti-war left rather than reach out to moderates is evidence itself of worry in the White House.

    Panic at the pump. Gasoline prices have more than doubled since Mr. Obama took office. While claiming that increasing the oil supply with new drilling won’t affect prices, Economics 101 be dammed the White House offers the window-dressing measure of tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, our emergency backup stockpile. His release of 30 million barrels – a 1–day supply 1/2 is a fraction of the 200-million-barrel annual shortfall his Gulf of Mexico drilling ban has caused. The futility of this gesture underscores the administration’s political desperation at least to be seen as doing something.

    Clumsy class warfare. It’s never surprising when liberals segregate Americans into classes for their own political gain. That’s more or less their entire political strategy. Nudge a Democrat in his sleep, and he’s likely to say: “Tax the rich.” (Or maybe, “Bush’s fault.”) What is surprising, however, is how transparently desperate Mr. Obama sounds trying to pull it off. “[I]f we choose to keep a tax break for corporate-jet owners then that means we’ve got to cut some kids off from getting a college scholarship.” It’s a desperate president indeed who would have you believe that success among some Americans causes failure for others. The president’s class-warfare remarks are, as Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, describes, “more appropriate for some left-wing strongman than for the president of the United States.”

    Biden boot buzz. The rumors that Team Obama will drop Vice President Joseph R. Biden from the 2012 ticket in favor of New York Gov. Mario Cuomo are just that – rumors – and will go nowhere, but the interesting point is that they exist at all. Their origin almost certainly lies within insider Democratic circles and reveals two points: (1) no confidence in the gaffetastic vice president (and who can blame them?) and (2) worry that his presence could doom the ticket. Rumors of vice presidents’ imminent departures are nothing new, but they never seem to swell around re-election shoo-ins.

    The 2012 election may be the most consequential of our lifetimes, and it’s obviously far too early to predict its results. But that’s the point. The White House has conceded the inevitability factor. The bloom is off the Obama rose, and Team Obama knows it.

    Dr. Milton R. Wolf is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and cousin of President Obama.

  137. From Washington Monthly:

    The willingness of the rich to defend their wealth from taxation to the point of national ruin is nothing new in world history …

    The Han dynasty in China fell in the third century AD after aristocratic families with government connections became increasingly able to shield their ever-larger land holdings from taxation, which helped precipitate the bloody Yellow Turban peasant revolt. Nearly a millennium and a half later, the great Ming dynasty went into protracted decline in part for similar reasons: unable or unwilling to raise taxes on the landed gentry, the government couldn’t pay its soldiers and was overrun by Manchu invaders.

    The Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus persuaded his reluctant nobles to accept higher taxes, with which he built a professional military that beat back the invading Ottomans. But after his death the resentful barons placed a weak foreign prince on the throne and got their taxes cut 70 to 80 percent. When their undisciplined army lost to Suleiman the Magnificent, Hungary lost its independence.

    Anti-Terror Sensor That Scans Crowds for Bombers Tested in U.K.
    Published July 07, 2011
    LONDON – A sensor that can scan huge crowds and pick out a lone suicide bomber by homing in on hidden explosives has undergone official tests, The Sun reported Thursday. The revolutionary gadget — similar to airport scanners but top secret — is believed to silently analyze materials using the unique “terahertz” waves emitted by different substances. British government scientists began testing it a year ago on mock crowds where one person in every 75 carried a “Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Device.” Heavily-censored reports obtained by the newspaper in a freedom of information request reveal other trials saw the guinea pigs armed with “handguns and knives.” Real terrorists would have no idea they had been scanned from a distance — and could be intercepted before causing mayhem. The futuristic device — officially known as a “stand-off imaging system” — could be used to protect Al Qaeda targets such as rail stations, shopping malls and sporting events. The device is thought to be sophisticated enough to differentiate between plastic explosive and plasticine. British government sources have not ruled out the system being in place at the London Olympics. The Home Office said, “Protecting the public is our number one priority. We regularly test new technologies to help us face the ongoing terrorist threat.”

  141. For anyone not quite up to speed on the Gunrunner Scandal- Here is the beginning of Rep Issa’s evolving Opus starting on May 31, 3011-
    ______________________

    “Then ATF, the Attorney General and even the President of the United States may be staring down a long barrel of their own construction—a three-year Weaponsgate initiated and implemented by a US law enforcement agency that accomplished little else but the provisioning of Mexican cartels with more than 1800 assault rifles sold to them by gun dealers in the US who were, in turn, assured by ATF that this was not, in fact, illegal, but part of a ‘secret operation.’

    Of course, if you follow this line of thinking to the end, you find yourself in possession of some very serious ‘what-if’s,’ threads which, if Congress decides to pull them, could unravel the careers of senior ATF officials, the Attorney General, and even the President of the United States.

    That prospect isn’t stopping Representative Issa (R-Calif), who minced no words at the May 4 congressional hearing about what he sees as obstructionist ploys on the part of ATF/DOJ to escape accountability for an operation insiders say might, in a worst-case scenario, implicate the White House and DOJ in a ‘secret,’ politically-motivated US-Mexico agreement via which the US played a part in supplying concrete evidence for Calderon’s claim that US guns are fueling cartel violence. Did we give them the guns just so they could be counted?

    The response to this kind of scenario could range from career-shattering scandal to criminal indictment and anywhere in between.

    At the very least, the evidence already in possession of the House Oversight Committee might give the families of Agents Brian Terry and Jaime Zapata a starting place for legal enquiries.

    William Lajeuness reports the exchange on Capitol Hill between Issa and Holder was both combative and explicit:

    Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) went after Attorney General Eric Holder for refusing to answer questions and subpoenas for documents that implicate who approved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives project that allowed guns purchased illegally in U.S. to be smuggled into Mexico on behalf of the drug cartels with the knowledge and consent of the ATF.

    “We’re not looking at straw buyers, Mr. Attorney General, we’re looking at you,” Issa said. “We’re looking at you, we’re looking at your key people who knew or should’ve known about this.”

    Holder shot back.

    “The notion that somehow or another that this Justice Department is responsible for those deaths, that assertion is offensive,” Holder said, referring to the death of American Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

    “What if it’s accurate, Mr. Attorney General?” Issa responded. “What am I going to tell Agent Terry’s mother about how he died at the hands of a gun that was videotaped as it was being sold to a straw purchaser fully expecting it to end up in the hands of drug cartels?”

    Holder responded. “We’ll have to see exactly what happened with regard to the guns that are an issue there.”

    Now, when Holder says “We’ll have to see exactly what happened with regard to the guns”—the ‘we’ he’s talking about, again, is his own organization—DOJ, whose in-house Office of the Inspector General (the same folks we suspect might have been involved in the construction of Fast and Furious) is at this very moment conducting a ‘rigorous,’ internal investigation into the situation.

    Repeat—President Barack Obama agrees with his Attorney General that the DOJ ‘in-house’ investigation into its own operations is sufficient.

    He’s standing by his man.

    Indeed, the President has also encouraged the top Democrat on Issa’s House Oversight Committee, Representative Elijah Cummings (D-Md), to make an appeal to Chairman Issa—to be reasonable and ‘to sit down with Justice’ to talk about the ATF documents for which the Committee has delivered subpoenas, but which, almost a month past the deadline, have not yet been delivered.

    Critics, including ATF whistleblowers, say OIG/DOJ and the White House have one priority in regard to Justice’s internal investigation: damage control.

    Crisis sliding off public radar?

    Was Fast & Furious a legitimate undercover investigation or a ‘rogue operation’?

    The standoff between Issa’s committee and the Attorney General is an edgy situation.

    But oddly enough, the situation has not fully captured the attention of the press or the public.

    Officials: President Obama seeks $3 trillion to $4 trillion in cuts

    Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama is seeking $3 trillion to $4 trillion in deficit cuts over the next decade, a move that would require putting Social Security, Medicare, defense spending and tax reform on the table as part of a balanced approach to cuts, Democratic officials familiar with the negotiations told CNN.

    The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not say what types of cuts would have to be considered under such a proposal. In the past, one Social Security adjustment debt negotiators have discussed is cost-of-living.

    Sarah Palin On Crying Report: I Was Not In ‘Tears’ Over Movie ‘The Undefeated’

    Sarah Palin is rejecting a report from the U.K.-based Daily Mail that she was “reduced to tears” after seeing a new documentary out on her tenure as governor of Alaska.

    According to the British tabloid, sources said Palin got emotional after her husband, Todd Palin, became enraged by the film, which premiered in Iowa last week.

    “Obviously we’ve seen our share of media lies, but the latest fabrications circulated take a big slice of the cake,” Palin wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “The UK Daily Mail reports that I was ‘in tears’ as Todd ‘rages over Hollywood stars ripping’ me in the new film ‘The Undefeated.’ Huh? Really? The beautiful town of Pella, Iowa, was flooded with an army of media covering the premiere of this film. You’d think someone would have caught those tears and rages on tape, right?”

    Directing readers to video of remarks she made in the Hawkeye State, the former governor added, “The emotion clearly displayed was gratitude to the filmmakers who invested their own time and money into highlighting my team’s record in Alaska. Todd and I were overwhelmed with gratitude, and we hope everyone sees this film.” She went on to scold the media and said, “There’s a story there, but you’ll never find it if you continue lying and carrying water for the powers that be.”

    The film on Palin’s time as governor features footage of Hollywood stars criticizing her. Matt Damon, David Letterman and Madonna are some of the big names who appear in the documentary. At the premiere of the film Palin asked the Hollywood Reporter, “What would make someone be so full of hate?”

    The former governor she was taken aback by the footage. “It makes you want to reach out to some of these folks and say, ‘What’s your problem?'” she said. “What would make a celebrity, like you saw on screen, so hate someone that they’d seek their destruction, their death, the death of their children? What would make someone be so full of hate and, I guess, a sense of being threatened that they would want to see that person destroyed?”

    And every senior citizen from here to kingdom come. It is becoming abundantly clear why the Republicans sponsored such a weak candidate such as John McCain in 08′. They wanted clean hands going into 2012 to finish up the dirty work they are pushing along with the president today-

    The money taken out of the working man’s paycheck for years and years held in Trust for them until their retirement or in case of permanent disability combined with an affordable HC plan when they are no longer employed, is in fact a violation by the US government of the Public Trust and the final destruction of FDR’s safeguards put in place during the depression. You can thank the Republicans for fulfilling Gingrich’s plan, ‘The Contract with America’ = abject Poverty for the rest of Americans.

    That’s for sure – especially that last line about Cuomo/Clinton speculation. He doesn’t realize that:

    1) Cuomo and Clinton being from the same state, they can’t run together on a national ticket;

    2) Disregarding (1) and hypothetically putting the two on the same ticket, it would be Clinton/Cuomo and not the other way around – Both because of (a) Clinton’s scope and experience and (b) the fact that Hillary would never accept VP under anybody.

  157. What really pss me off is the Republicans are totally to blame for what has happening to this country. They have been at it for 30yrs. From the time of the Reagan/Bush presidency with Cheney standing in the wings ready to make his trillions on Halliburton providing logistics for a War of convenience in Iraq. The country started going down hill from that time forward. (I would love herding every republican in the country into cargo planes and drop them off in Borneo and watch them wiggle with their high moralistic standards exclusive to zipper watch!)

    Is it any wonder why the animal Hatred of the Clintons still resonates today? Had it not been for the Clinton presidency in 92′ we would all be stranded in the Work Houses of the 30s the Irish endured when Britain slaughtered the Irish with a slow death during the blighted Potato Famine.

    I’ve been watching the movie “Hot Coffee” this morning. I read an article which stated that Obama cares very much about a second term. Apparently they had some hotshot come to the White House and explain to Bambi and Michelle the increase they could look forward to in speaking fees, etc., if he were a two-term president rather than a one- term. My guess is that from that day forward he decided to allow others to carry him for another four years after this term is up.

    &&&&&&&&

    Q: Where are the Dems?
    A: Out in the frikkin’ cold.

    Front page NY Times today, lead story:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/08/us/politics/08fiscal.html?_r=1&hp

    Here is the section describing the Democrats’ sense of betrayal by Obama who threw them under his re-election bus:

    The intensifying negotiations between the president and the speaker have Congressional Democrats growing anxious, worried they will be asked to accept a deal that is too heavily tilted toward Republican efforts and produces too little new revenue relative to the magnitude of the cuts.

    Congressional Democrats said they were caught off guard by the weekend White House visit of Mr. Boehner — a meeting the administration still refused to acknowledge on Wednesday — and Senate Democrats raised concerns at a private party luncheon on Wednesday.

    House Democrats have their own fears about the negotiations, which they expressed in an hourlong meeting Wednesday night with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner.

    “Depending on what they decide to recommend, they may not have Democrats,” Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, said in an interview. “I think it is a risky thing for the White House to basically take the bet that we can be presented with something at the last minute and we will go for it.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dear Mrs. Smith, I’ve been day-dreaming of this, talking about this, praying for this for so long it’s begun to take shape in my sleeping dreams. Ohh, God, please, if you love us, let it be!
  164. Our government is completely corrupt and screwed up. Here’s the gist of this: The EPA wants to do more regulating, but hits resistance in Congress. So they fund activist groups, with OUR tax dollars, who then use those funds to sue the EPA to accomplish what the EPA wanted to do anyway.
    I don’t care what you think of the particular issues being sued over, this process is CORRUPT and WRONG.
    The EPA gets sued on a regular basis by environmental groups complaining about a lack of enforcement, a process that routinely requires legal settlements and significant taxpayer expense. Investors Business Daily’s report today suggests that taxpayers may be funding more of the process than they know. Among the recipients of grants from the EPA are some of the same groups it faces in courtrooms:
    One organization involved in the suit, the Environmental Defense Fund, has a long history of taking the EPA to court. In fact, a cursory review finds almost half a dozen cases in the past 10 years.
    The odd thing is that the EPA, in turn, has handed EDF $2.76 million in grants over that same period, according to an IBD review of the agency’s grant database.
    This strange relationship goes well beyond EDF. Indeed, several environmental groups that have received millions in EPA grants regularly file suit against that same agency. A dozen green groups were responsible for more than 3,000 suits against the EPA and other government agencies over the past decade, according to a study by the Wyoming-based Budd-Falen Law Offices.
    Surprised? Probably not, and for good reason. The EPA doesn’t exactly discourage such lawsuits; in fact, the agency funded a handy guide instructing people how to go about suing them over ennvironmental enforcement. And, as IBD notes, the group that publishes the guide has received nearly $10 million in EPA grants over the past decade.
    Here’s another unsurprising surprise: the EPA usually winds up paying the legal fees associated with these suits. The Equal Access to Justice Act created what a former Bush official calls “sweetheart suits,” a lucrative business that ends up transferring funds from the federal government to activist groups … and their lawyers. It’s a free ride for plaintiff attorneys, since the EPA doesn’t get damaged by the process. In fact, the suits generally force the EPA to do what they want to do anyway, using the courts to grant them jurisdiction and authority that Congress withholds. It’s not for nothing that the EPA funds guides on how to sue them most effectively.
    It’s a win-win for regulators. They get more power, make themselves less accountable to Congress, and fund groups they like outside of Congressional appropriations, especially now that pork-barrel spending has fallen out of favor. Trial lawyers get rich, too, a particular benefit for Democrats, who rely on that lobby for heavy political donations. The only people who lose are the taxpayers getting their pockets picked and the businesses that end up on the wrong end of the expanding regulatory state.
    The left, the middle and anyone that cares about these two safety nets that workers have been paying into all their lives. Tax money and lives for wars, taxes for expense accounts, private jets, high pay for congress and politicians, but kick the middle and lower classes in a black hole of deeper poverty when they are “too old to hire” or sick to work.
    I was just over looking at the battle going on at the DU site and this one caught my eye-
    —–
    This is so sad when a Dem president
    always sides with Repugs and against the people that put him in office. Why the fuck would he even mention this except as a prelude to yet another cave. The only change he supports is moving to the right and destroying the Democratic base and why is he doing this – no reason at all except it’s what the right wants and he gets nothing back from them, no concessions on taxes at all!!!!! People here put down Clinton all the time, but at least Clinton had the balls to raise taxes on the rich & approve FMLA – what has Obama done to improve the economy and the lives of working people – zero, zilch, nada. If he cuts SS in any way, I will have such a hard time even getting up the energy to vote for him. If it wasn’t for the Supreme Court norminations, I would absolutely not vote for him.
  170. On the Fast and Furious/Gunwalker scandal:
    That story is huge, and some very powerful people are obviously clamping down tight on it. Outside of a very few newspapers who did a desultory basic coverage with no real follow up, the big media guns are quiet.
    No way a story that big and flashy is getting almost NO major media coverage by accident. Gunrunners and drug cartels and stings gone wrong and 1800 or more assault weapons sent over the border by our govt, and deaths and Mexico clamoring for info? It’s practically made for TV. Hell, it’s made for Hollywood. No fucking way it’s being ignored without a lot of pressure.
    US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in New Delhi on July 19 to attend the second round of US-India strategic dialogue. Sources told The Pioneer that Clinton will be in New Delhi for two days and then head for the ASEAN Regional Forum in Bali. The dialogue will be co-chaired by External Affairs Minister SM Krishna.
    Sources said a host of bilateral and international issues will come up for discussion but focus will be on the evolving situation in India’s neighbourhood —Afghanistan and Pakistan — alongside the recent NSG decision on ban on supplying ENR technology to non-NPT countries.
    According to sources, besides the Afghanistan situation, the dialogue will also take up issues related to East Asia, South East Asia, trade relations, G20, financial crisis and climate change negotiations and counter terrorism.
    New Delhi believes that US will be “sharing” and will be “committed” at sharing “more” information on the Mumbai trial and the issue will be pressed during the Clinton’s visit, sources told The Pioneer.
    Experts believe the visit of Clinton assumes importance as India is set to get a first-hand account of how the US views the present situation in Pakistan.
    Former Indian Ambassador to the US Naresh Chandra said, “The US-India Strategic dialogue is significant after the dip in US-Pakistan relationship. India can get a first-hand account from Hillary Clinton about how she views the present situation in Pakistan and the way US is dealing with terrorism.”
    Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibbal said, “India should take this dialogue as an opportunity to get clarity on US game plan in Afghanistan especially after Obama’s recent speech of drawdown strategy.”
    http://nation.foxnews.com/president-obama/2011/07/07/major-garrett-obama-bordering-panic-dangerously-close-losing-connection-a
    as it stands right now, Obama’s failing to connect and Garrett cited his so-called Twitter town hall meeting as an attempt almost in desperation to resurrect the messaging success the president in his prior election.
    “[I]f people aren’t listening to you on that core message, it doesn’t matter what you say anymore,” he said. “And I think the president is dangerously close to losing that connection with the American people on what he knows about the economy and what he can predict about the economy. And presidents who can’t lead on the economy tend to be replaced. And I think today’s Twitter town hall is evidence of a low-level degree of anxiety bordering on panic within the Chicago reelection headquarters because back in 2008 and 2007, I watched this develop on the ground. There was a sense that ‘oh social media created the energy.’ No, social media harnessed and built it out. It made it exponential. But it didn’t create it in the first place and you see a lot of sort of feverish attempts to engage social media as if that’s the means by which to create energy. No – you create energy by what you do, what you say and how you lead, especially if you’re seeking reelection and it’s at that level that I think the energy pool is much more shallow for President Obama than the campaign would like it to be.”
    …………………..
    Obama has no tingle anymore, he has showed the man behind the curtain, a cynical politician who would fuck a corpse for a pizza.
  179. I find this really sick:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303365804576429852703978020.html
    Some legal observers would like to be rid of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Associated Press reported over the weekend. These aren’t conservatives who find her too activist but liberals who find her too old and worry that if she doesn’t get out soon, a Republican president will get to replace her:
    Ginsburg could retire now and allow [President] Obama to name a like-minded successor whose confirmation would be in the hands of a Democratic-controlled Senate. “She has in her power the ability to prevent a real shift in the balance of power on the court,” said Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California at Irvine law school. “On the other hand, there’s the personal. How do you decide to leave the United States Supreme Court?” . . .
  180. Interesting. From a commenter at FreeRepublic, Gunwalker money was in an initial HCR bill and later rolled into the stimulus bill:
    Something about Project Gunrunner (gunwalker, fast and furious) has been bugging me but I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
    This morning when I woke up I remember seeing Project Gunrunner in a bill that was discussed here. The original thread about it was a rumor thread that HR45 had been rolled into the stimulus package.
    In that thread I scanned the text of H.R.1 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for gun, firearm, etc and came up with a hit.
    I posted in the thread: “Only time “gun” or “firearm” appears is in the part that give $10,000,000 to the ATF for Project Gunrunner. That was H.R. 495, asking for 15,000,000 for Gunrunner”.
    H.R. 495 that I mentioned never made it out of committee, but it looks as it was to specifically fund Gunrunner.
    Instead portions of it were rolled into the stimulus package a month later. That text found in H.R.1 is:
    For an additional amount for ‘State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance’, $40,000,000, for competitive grants to provide assistance and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall be transferred to ‘Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses’ for the ATF Project Gunrunner.
    Notice that’s $40,000,000 for Southern border enforcement, $10,000,000 of which specifically for Project Gunrunner. What does $10 million pay for here? It didn’t hire any new agents that I am aware of.
    What this tells me is that several congressmen also had knowledge of what Gunrunner was going to entail. This isn’t just the ATF and DOJ.
    See, this is one of the reasons I am philosophically opposed to mammoth, complicated legislation. It is just too easy to hide stuff. What the hell was funding a govt gunrunning sting doing in a fucking HEALTHCARE bill to begin with? And who inserted it in there?
  181. Wait, my bad. It was initially in a different stimulus bill, not the HCR bill. Running on 4 hours of sleep here, brain going foggy. But the overall point is the same.
  182. More from FreeRepublic
    Now a single traffic stop in Phoenix has revealed 43 weapons with serial numbers traceable to the the ATF scandal – taken from 4 illegal aliens arrested in the stop.
    If more Americans get killed by those guns that our own govt GAVE to the drug cartels, the shit is going to hit the fan.
  183. Okay, clarification coming in from commenters:
    Project ‘Gunrunner’ was different than ‘Fast and Furious’. Gunrunner had the aim of arresting traffikers before the guns left the continental US….Obama amended it to ‘Fast and Furious’ and then refused to allow agents to follow the guns out of the store,etc. In other words..it became ‘Gunwalker’ i.e. ‘Fast and Furious’ and the guns were allowed to ‘walk’…something never before done…EVER!
    —–
    Project Gunrunner was already in effect. It was started under bush. This waa to continue THAT program, but the chief executive and the doj changed the rules and ordered th ATF to back off arresting the perps. THAT is when things began to spiral out of control nd the guns that “walked” got away.
    This is what got some ATF agents so upset that they talked. They were fine with the stings they’d been doing before – that was standard practice. But then they started being told from higher up to not arrest them and take the guns back before they crossed the border. Which anyone with a brain knew was insane.
    Our government is completely corrupt and screwed up. Here’s the gist of this: The EPA wants to do more regulating, but hits resistance in Congress. So they fund activist groups, with OUR tax dollars, who then use those funds to sue the EPA to accomplish what the EPA wanted to do anyway.
    Some goodies to share, of (former) Obots crying in their beer. This first one basically wished Bill Clinton occupied the White House again:
    A lot of people will “shaddup” and stay home in 2012.But do you think Obama will really care? No. He will have destroyed the Democratic Party, but he, personally, will be a made man — forever due the adoration of the extreme right — their hero.
    Shame on him. FDR is no doubt turning over in this grave.
    The swindle will be, as usual, hidden in the accounting tricks.
    Face it. We are checkmated.
    And if you were one of the loud, loud DUers who got on the Obama bandwagon and pushed others on. I hope you are happy.
    What to take to San Antonio in August? Shorts, sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, windshield screen if driving to prevent burning your hands on the steering wheel and your behind on the seat, and an ice chest are just a few things to have with you. It is a beautiful city with some of the nicest people on earth.
  191. ANOTHER PRECIOUS DU QUOTE:
    While not 100% foolproof of course, it generally provides pretty good insight into human behavior. Thus far Obama has not done a SINGLE FUCKING THING to make people who have removed their lips from his ass and opened their eyes believe that this will be anything other than yet another disappointing cave to the right. What a terrible presidency this has turned out to be.
    GOP Rep. Tim Scott Warns Of Obama Impeachment
    ==================
    Written by NewsOne Staff
    July 7, 2011
    Rep. Tim Scott said that if President Obama should invoke a clause in the 14th Amendment in order to bypass Congress and borrow beyond the debt limit, the Republican lawmaker would consider that an act worthy of impeachment.
    “This president is looking to usurp congressional oversight to find a way to get it done without us. My position is that is an impeachable act from my perspective,” said Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) at a meeting sponsored by the Tea Party group LowCountry 9.12 Project on Tuesday.
    “There are a lot of things people say, ‘Are you going to impeach the president over that?’ — No. But this? This is catastrophic,” continued Scott. “This jeopardizes the credibility of our nation if one man can usurp the entire system set up by our founding fathers over something this significant.”
    Can you blame them? Rats are smart.
    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/envoy/no-2-defense-official-step-down-182733152.html
    Less than a week after Leon Panetta started as Secretary of Defense, the Pentagon’s low-profile number 2, Deputy Defense Secretary Bill Lynn, says he plans to step down from the job, but has agreed to stay on until a successor is appointed, the Associated Press’ Robert Burns reports:
    Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III said in an Associated Press interview that he told Panetta last Friday, on Panetta’s first day as Pentagon chief, that he planned to resign for personal reasons.
    “I thought this was a logical point for me to depart the Pentagon,” Lynn said during the interview in his office.
    He said he told Panetta that he would be best served by having a deputy who was willing to stay at least through President Barack Obama’s first term, which ends in January 2013. …
    Lynn said he was leaving for “personal, family reasons,” and wanted to spend more time with his children. He said it had nothing to do with Obama’s choice of CIA director Panetta to succeed Robert Gates. Lynn said he knew Panetta only slightly from periodic contact while both served in the Clinton administration. […]
    Panetta’s chief spokesman, Doug Wilson, said Panetta has begun a search for a deputy. Wilson said it was possible that a nomination could come by the end of the summer.
    A former Pentagon comptroller and Raytheon executive, Lynn has focused on budgets, and other close-in management tasks of the enormous agency, while also tending to more specialized issues, such as cybersecurity.
    It’s not clear if the former CIA chief Panetta–himself a former head of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB)–will want a deputy who has similar budget-crunching skills.
    One obvious potential candidate to succeed Lynn: Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy, who has frequently served as a critical DoD point person at committee meetings among inter-agency National Security Council deputies.
  195. So Twitter Hall was a bust?! Twits have moved on away from the twit in chief and he is in panic mode.
  196. I wonder if all this talk about cutting SS and medicare is to generate panic in the ranks and when he does do something not so drastic but bad nonetheless that they would heave a sigh of relief saying it was not as bad as they thought it would be — psychological perversion.. may be the WH focus grouped it.
  197. From Hotair (not a reliable source):
    the suits generally force the EPA to do what they want to do anyway, using the courts to grant them jurisdiction and authority that Congress withholds.
    ===============
    Unless the Hotair writer is claiming that the courts are corrupt also, there has got to be some basis in law for these suits succeeding. So — if the basis is there — what does Congress have to do with it at this stage?
    If the basis is there — why do they NEED a lawsuit to get the EPA to act?
    Good cop-out vs bad cop-out.
  200. Rep. Tim Scott said that if President Obama should invoke a clause in the 14th Amendment in order to bypass Congress and borrow beyond the debt limit, the Republican lawmaker would consider that an act worthy of impeachment.
    =====================
    We saw what happened in 1988 when a GOP House impeached a president: the Dem senate acquitted him. It takes 67 senators to convict.
  201. Didn’t the Obama campaign call Andrew Cuomo a racist? If I remember correctly, it was something about “shuck and jive”, I think. Why would they want Cuomo now as a VP? Although…Biden did also call Obama “articulate” and that was also seen as “racially tinged.”
    As for Social Security cuts, what a joke! I’m so done with just the misinformation and misrepresentation that goes on with Social Security, most especially with the Republicans. Their distortions, and really, fabrications, when it comes to SS is almost enough to turn me completely off them. Republicans should be careful how far they tread — I still oppose Obama, but what they want to do with SS isn’t winning them any favors.
    I feel it is also important to point that Social Security is probably the most successful program in our nation’s history. Over the 85 years or so that Social Security has been around, it has only exceeded payouts more than receipts 11 times in its history. See here: http://www.ssa.gov/history/tftable.html
    When you compare that in context with the rest of our budget, not to mention how long and how often we have been in deficit, Social Security really is one of the best things we’ve done as a country! Now though, they want to go after it. It’s always the same, Republicans have always been trying to grab Social Security since the day it was first around.
    Then there are pretend progressives. I was just reading at Politico, and there was an opinion piece saying “Liberals are wrong to oppose SS Reform, Obama is brilliant to do so, and Liberals need to stop complaining and support the President. Social Security Reform is the best thing for progressives.” I guess they have to now rewriting the dictionary on what it means to be progressive, in order to get the peons to get on board with this.
  202. pm317, the DUmmies are onto that sort of thing, i saw several yesterday referring to Obama doing that, they know his playbook now, he aint getting away with it anymore.
    Good Morning…
    I am watching this and wondering what hope we have of ever winning against these people. I have to go back to my original solution, increase the number of representatives from each state and select them for office by the most random method available. And maybe even make them serve from the home state rather then going to Washington where they are out of our sight.
  206. We were in Yellowstone over the July 4th weekend and I was nervous hiking the Cascade Canyon trail (in the Tetons) and sure enough, a mother grizzly killed a man and injured his wife two days ago (in the Canyon Village area of the Yellowstone) — the couple were hiking by themselves and surprised the bear as they stepped out of wooded area and walked into her and her cubs in the open. Scary! Take precautions and be prepared. We did see a bear cross the road right in front of us but we were in our car.
  207. If you have watched and listened to the above video, you heard where Prince Charles supports Islam. That little gem had been skipped over in the video where I found this article last night elaborating on Prince Charles radical philosophy.
    We are now aware of the dramatic foothold Islamists have in the UK. (Remember reading up to 25,000 British schoolgirls are to undergo clitorectomies to be in compliance with Sharia Law) To understand why Islam has had a free hand setting up mosques in London and elsewhere in the UK creeping slowly into the British school systems. Where traditionally the monarchy has been apolitical separate and apart from politics. Charles as King would change the system implementing his ideas into British Law.
    I found this quote last night in a UK article- Where there is good reason to believe Charles will not be the future King.. The UK fears if Charles succeeds QE, he will jeopardize the monarchy’s very existence. They fear due to the enforcement of Charles’ radical ideas as King mandating British citizens into Sharia Law will result in a citizen’s revolt against the monarchy ending the monarchy’s reign permanently as the figure heads of Great Britain for hundreds of years. (If you want to get a feel for what the article is saying click back to the first page for substance and background..)
    Britain’s crisis of succession: Charles and the story behind the royal wedding
    published April 22,2011 updated June 23, 2011
    “While Charles’s ideas about politics, urbanization and aesthetics alarm many liberals, he also holds ideas that offend many traditional Tory supporters of the monarchy: He is an ardent believer in radical ecology, not just in his commendable awareness of global warming but in his outspoken support of such thinkers as Wendell Berry, who advocate a turn away from technology and economic growth.”
    “A deeply religious man, Charles is also a great defender of Islam; he uses his School of Traditional Arts in East London to promote “the living traditions of Islamic art, architecture and craftsmanship, as well as those of other great religions and cultures.”
    “Scientists and doctors have been horrified by Charles’s lavish advocacy of pseudo-medical practices such as homeopathy and aromatherapy as alternatives to medicine. Many remedies with no proven medical or scientific value are part of the Prince of Wales’s business empire: His Duchy Originals firm makes herbal and homeopathic supplements, and has persuaded the Boots pharmacy chain to carry them in all its stores. ”
    ::snip::
    “How much will Canadians endure Charles now that the more appealing promise of William has been so tantalizingly dangled? We may start to learn the answer this summer, when it will be William’s turn to visit Canada, this time with his photogenic bride.”
    “If he sets foot on the shores of Newfoundland and attracts an audience not in the dozens but in the thousands, will that be read as a vote against his father? Or it could be a vote, as his grandmother may well hope, for a historic bait and switch: an era during which a prince is in our hearts and a king, otherwise ignored, is on our money.”
    President Obama will speak about the new data in the Rose Garden at 10:35 a.m., the White House says.
    …………………………
    Betty your proposed solution is dead on- If what we know now, we were aware of when Clinton was in office almost 20 yrs ago. I think your proposal is a plan the Clintons had in mind during the midterms to elect candidates, loyalists to Hillary during her campaign to clear out the Obama faction that helped him get elected. Yes, I agree this is plan based in logic.
    The problem is- we are out of time.. The Bankers and their elite Neoconic supporters (the Bush Cartel) have, through Obama gotten so far ahead of us, we cannot wait months and years to effectively change the Obama landscape.
    It occurred to me while watching the video- that like us, they (Obama’s administrative appointments) had been handed a script like they do in the movies when the plot and the outcome of the movie are to be kept separate and apart from the other actors as a whole. Meaning the actors are not allowed to discuss their role in the movie with other participating actors because the movie’s ending is to be kept secret until it’s release in movie theaters.
    If this is true, it is how Obama’s operation has been so successful. It now makes sense when we hear of his administrative people leaving, like rats deserting a ship in distress, is because they know the whole story now realizing they were used by Obama in the most derogatory sense of the word to facilitate his agenda with the ELITES and not following the promises he made to the people during his campaign. If you don’t believe what I am saying, Admin- posted a thread just the other day entitled “Hillary’s Dilemma”-
    Hillary is torn between keeping the Peace in the ME and is unwittingly tied to Obama’s malevolent plans for the dismantling of the country. Afraid to leave her post too soon and afraid to stay too long in Obama’s employ. TG she has Bill at her back supporting her in every way possible until we catch a break- Meaning if as Ulsterman predicted a big scandal is looming in the WH. If this Gunrunner expose is big enough and bad enough to force the House Republicans to Impeach Holder and Obama, this may be our only chance to get rid of Obama leaving him in disgrace as happened to Nixon. It’s really up to the House Republicans to do their duty and make it happen based on the evidence reviewed by Issa’s commission to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate Obama and Holder’s ties to the Gun Runner Scandal.
    Will it happen? If we want justice served and our country saved, it has to happen. If the Republican House remains silent turning a blind eye to Obama and Holder’s High Crimes and Misdemeanors- Then We have to turn to public outcry to force the House into doing their job removing Obama and Holder. Sad to say, imo- Public Outcry is our only recourse if the House does not move to Impeach soon.
  215. Obama’s Call To Destroy Social Security Is Last Straw for Leading Democrats
    July 8, 2011 • 9:45AM
    President Nerobama is not fiddling while Rome burns, but actively setting the fires. Before his meeting today in the White House with Congressional leaders, Obama announced that he planned to put not only Medicare and Medicaid on the cutting block, but also Social Security, sending Democratic leaders into canniptions. Obama also said that his original plan for $2 trillion in cuts over the next decade was not adequate, doubling the figure to $4 trillion. As he said Tuesday, he sees the current total collapse of the real economy as “a unique opportunity to do something big to rebalance the nation’s finances,” by slashing the entitlements, doing something “big” in a “grand bargain” with the Republicans.
    Obama did not consult, or even inform, the Democratic leadership of his plan to destroy the general welfare policies of the nation. Harry Reid, who has repeatedly insisted that Social Security could not be touched (and led the fight against George W. Bush’s effort to privatize it) refused to answer reporters’ questions about Obama’s call, and got testy when reporters followed up on the issue. Nancy Pelosi was not informed, nor was Chris van Hollen, who had been part of the failed bipartisan team with Vice President Joe Biden working on a budget-cut plan. Van Hollen told CNN: “Congressional Democrats are not going to support something that seeks to balance the budget on the backs of Social Security beneficiaries.”
    Obama called the two-hour meeting in the White House Thursday “constructive,” and told reporters that he (not a cooperative ‘we’) would convene a second meeting on Sunday.
    The dog-and-pony show about “cuts vs tax hikes” continues, with Obama claiming that he is trading the destruction of the general welfare for taxes on corporate jets and closing some tax loop holes. Democrats in the Congress are furious, and the “nationalist block” in the Congress against Obama’s nazi policies and for Glass-Steagall will be growing rapidly over the coming days. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) said: “I think when the president does a deal, he ought to talk to the Democrats.”
    Even the pro-austerity Democrats are angry. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and part of the Concord Coalition of budget-cutters, said he has never believed that Social Security trims should be used to reduce the debt. “Any savings from Social Security should be used to extend the solvency of Social Security,” he said.
    The Progressive Caucus Democrats exploded, sending a letter to Obama, demanding that Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid not be touched. “The middle class has experienced enough pain during the last three years,” it said. “Republicans are willing to inflict even more. We will not join them.” The signers include Reps. Raul Grijalva, Keith Ellison (Minn.), Judy Chu (Calif.), John Lewis (Ga.), Mike Honda (Calif.), Danny Davis (Ill.), John Conyers (Mich.), and Luis Gutierrez (Ill.).
    Mrs. Smith,
    What do you mean by “real money”? Do you think there is actually a physical space somewhere with piles of cash sitting in it?
    I assure you that is not the case. The fact is there is nothing in social security except government issued debt or bonds (and these are largely electronic accounting entries as well). They have been borrowing from social security forever, and ever. The bonds are only worth whatever someone will pay for them, and unfortunately, it is the taxpayer who has been paying for all this debt, both in the social security deductions, and then again in the interest the government pays on the bonds it issues. Most recently, with QE 1 & 2, with buying the damned bonds themselves. THAT is where the funding for this stimulus and bailout bullshit came from; not robbing piles of cash sitting somewhere behind a door labeled “social security trust fund”.
    By Charles Krauthammer, Published: July 8 | Updated: Thursday, July 7, 8:00 PM
    Here we go again. An approaching crisis. A looming deadline. Nervous markets. And then, from the miasma of gridlock, rises our president, calling upon those unruly congressional children to quit squabbling, stop kicking the can down the road and get serious about debt.
    This from the man who:
    • Ignored the debt problem for two years by kicking the can to a commission.
    • Promptly ignored the commission’s December 2010 report.
    • Delivered a State of the Union address in January that didn’t even mention the word “debt” until 35 minutes in.
    • Delivered in February a budget so embarrassing — it actually increased the deficit — that the Democratic-controlled Senate rejected it 97 to 0.
    • Took a budget mulligan with his April 13 debt-plan speech. Asked in Congress how this new “budget framework” would affect the actual federal budget, Congressional Budget Office Director Doug Elmendorf replied with a devastating “We don’t estimate speeches.” You can’t assign numbers to air.
    President Obama assailed the lesser mortals who inhabit Congress for not having seriously dealt with a problem he had not dealt with at all, then scolded Congress for being even less responsible than his own children. They apparently get their homework done on time.
    My compliments. But the Republican House did do its homework. It’s called a budget. It passed the House on April 15. The Democratic Senate has produced no budget. Not just this year, but for two years running. As for the schoolmaster in chief, he produced two 2012 budget facsimiles: The first (February) was a farce and the second (April) was empty, dismissed by the CBO as nothing but words untethered to real numbers.
    Obama has run disastrous annual deficits of around $1.5 trillion while insisting for months on a “clean” debt-ceiling increase, i.e., with no budget cuts at all. Yet suddenly he now rises to champion major long-term debt reduction, scorning any suggestions of a short-term debt-limit deal as can-kicking.
    The flip-flop is transparently political. A short-term deal means another debt-ceiling fight before Election Day, a debate that would put Obama on the defensive and distract from the Mediscare campaign to which the Democrats are clinging to save them in 2012.
    A clever strategy it is: Do nothing (see above); invite the Republicans to propose real debt reduction first; and when they do — voting for the Ryan budget and its now infamous and courageous Medicare reform — demagogue them to death.
    And then up the ante by demanding Republican agreement to tax increases. So: First you get the GOP to seize the left’s third rail by daring to lay a finger on entitlements. Then you demand the GOP seize the right’s third rail by violating its no-tax pledge. A full-spectrum electrocution. Brilliant.
    And what have been Obama’s own debt-reduction ideas? In last week’s news conference, he railed against the tax break for corporate jet owners — six times.
    I did the math. If you collect that tax for the next 5,000 years — that is not a typo — it would equal the new debt Obama racked up last year alone. To put it another way, if we had levied this tax at the time of John the Baptist and collected it every year since — first in shekels, then in dollars — we would have 500 years to go before we could offset half of the debt added by Obama last year alone.
    Obama’s other favorite debt-reduction refrain is canceling an oil-company tax break. Well, if you collect that oil tax and the corporate jet tax for the next 50 years — you will not yet have offset Obama’s deficit spending for February 2011.
    After his Thursday meeting with bipartisan congressional leadership, Obama adopted yet another persona: Cynic in chief became compromiser in chief. Highly placed leaks are portraying him as heroically prepared to offer Social Security and Medicare cuts.
    We shall see. It’s no mystery what is needed. First, entitlement reform that changes the inflation measure, introduces means testing, then syncs the (lower) Medicare eligibility age with Social Security’s and indexes them both to longevity. And second, real tax reform, both corporate and individual, that eliminates myriad loopholes in return for lower tax rates for everyone.
    That’s real debt reduction. Yet even now, we don’t know where the president stands on any of this. Until we do, I’ll follow the Elmendorf Rule: We don’t estimate leaks. Let’s see if Obama can suspend his 2012 electioneering long enough to keep the economy from going over the debt cliff.
  219. PELOSI TO MEET W/ OBUMMER
    BUMMER: “Your welcome”.
    Pelosi, Obama to hold White House meeting on Friday
    By Felicia Sonmez
    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and President Obama will meet at the White House on Friday morning, according to a Democratic source.
    Meanwhile, Pelosi told Bloomberg TV that the country would reach a deal on raising the debt limit before the Aug. 2 deadline set by Treasury officials.
    “With all due respect to Greece, we are not Greece,” Pelosi said, referring to the recent financial crisis that engulfed that country.
    “I believe, respecting our colleagues on both sides of the aisle, that everybody knows that the full faith and credit of the United States of America must be respected by the Congress of the United States. I have faith and confidence this will happen.”
    Regarding the Pelosi-Obama meeting, the source, who has not authorized to speak publicly regarding the meeting, said the session had been scheduled before Obama invited eight bipartisan congressional leaders, including Pelosi, to meet at the White House on Thursday to discuss how to restart talks on a deal to raise the nation’s debt limit.
    Obama has held one-on-one meetings with other top lawmakers this week, including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Sunday and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday.
    The meeting with Pelosi is scheduled for 10 a.m. One issue likely to come up is entitlement reform. Obama is proposing significant reductions in Medicare spending and for the first time is offering to tackle the rising cost of Social Security as part of a sweeping debt-limit deal, people in both parties with knowledge of the proposal said Wednesday.
    Pelosi told Bloomberg that Social Security reform should be considered on a “separate table.”
    “If there are suggestions that people have for strengthening Social Security, let’s pour it back into Social Security if there are some good ideas to that effect. But we should not do that in order to subsidize tax cuts for the wealthiest people in our country. We have been clear about that from the standpoint of our House Democratic caucus over a long period of time.”
    Pelosi said that she did not think anyone was “drawing lines in the sand” that might subvert a “grand bargain” on a debt limit deal between Congress and the White House.
    “Understand though that our priority is no benefit cuts to Social Security or Medicare. I do not know if you can save money doing that. Are you reducing the deficit? We have to examine every piece of revenue we have.”
    On Thursday, Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders expressed alarm at the proposal.
    “We are not going to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, women and people with disabilities,” Pelosi said at a news conference at the Capitol.
    Mrs. Smith,
    What do you mean by “real money”?
    Do you think there is actually a physical space somewhere with piles of cash sitting in it?
    I assure you that is not the case. The fact is there is nothing in social security except government issued debt or bonds (and these are largely electronic accounting entries as well). They have been borrowing from social security forever, and ever. The bonds are only worth whatever someone will pay for them, and unfortunately, it is the taxpayer who has been paying for all this debt, both in the social security deductions, and then again in the interest the government pays on the bonds it issues. Most recently, with QE 1 & 2, with buying the damned bonds themselves. THAT is where the funding for this stimulus and bailout bullshit came from; not robbing piles of cash sitting somewhere behind a door labeled “social security trust fund”.
    ___________________
    Of course, what did you think I meant? The SS Treasury is full of Real Green backs piled up to the roof? Over reacting just a little methinks… 😆
    The fact remains- that is where the Stimulus money came from like I said in the first place. And if Obama and his new Republican friends get their way- that Stimulus money will never have to be paid back to the Social Security fund.
    i.e. Tax Payer screwed a second time!
    What Obama Wants
    =============
    By PAUL KRUGMAN
    Published: July 7, 2011
    On Thursday, President Obama met with Republicans to discuss a debt deal. We don’t know exactly what was proposed, but news reports before the meeting suggested that Mr. Obama is offering huge spending cuts, possibly including cuts to Social Security and an end to Medicare’s status as a program available in full to all Americans, regardless of income.
    Obviously, the details matter a lot, but progressives, and Democrats in general, are understandably very worried. Should they be? In a word, yes.
    Now, this might just be theater: Mr. Obama may be pulling an anti-Corleone, making Republicans an offer they can’t accept. The reports say that the Obama plan also involves significant new revenues, a notion that remains anathema to the Republican base. So the goal may be to paint the G.O.P. into a corner, making Republicans look like intransigent extremists — which they are.
    But let’s be frank. It’s getting harder and harder to trust Mr. Obama’s motives in the budget fight, given the way his economic rhetoric has veered to the right. In fact, if all you did was listen to his speeches, you might conclude that he basically shares the G.O.P.’s diagnosis of what ails our economy and what should be done to fix it. And maybe that’s not a false impression; maybe it’s the simple truth.
    One striking example of this rightward shift came in last weekend’s presidential address, in which Mr. Obama had this to say about the economics of the budget: “Government has to start living within its means, just like families do. We have to cut the spending we can’t afford so we can put the economy on sounder footing, and give our businesses the confidence they need to grow and create jobs.”
    That’s three of the right’s favorite economic fallacies in just two sentences. No, the government shouldn’t budget the way families do; on the contrary, trying to balance the budget in times of economic distress is a recipe for deepening the slump. Spending cuts right now wouldn’t “put the economy on sounder footing.” They would reduce growth and raise unemployment. And last but not least, businesses aren’t holding back because they lack confidence in government policies; they’re holding back because they don’t have enough customers — a problem that would be made worse, not better, by short-term spending cuts.
    In his brief remarks after Thursday’s meeting, by the way, Mr. Obama seemed to reiterate the Herbert Hooveresque view that deficit reduction is what we need to “grow the economy.”
    People have asked me why the president’s economic advisers aren’t telling him not to believe in the confidence fairy — that is, not to believe the assertion, popular on the right but overwhelmingly refuted by the evidence, that slashing spending in the face of a depressed economy will magically create jobs. My answer is, what economic advisers? Almost all the high-profile economists who joined the Obama administration early on have either left or are leaving.
    Nor have they been replaced. As The Wall Street Journal recently noted, there are a “stunning” number of vacancies in important economic posts. So who’s defining the administration’s economic views?
    Some of what we’re hearing is presumably coming from the political team, whose members seem to believe that a move toward Republican positions, reminiscent of former President Bill Clinton’s “triangulation” in the 1990s, is the key to Mr. Obama’s re-election. And Mr. Clinton did, indeed, rebound from a big defeat in the 1994 midterms to win big two years later. But some of us think that the rebound had less to do with his rhetorical move to the center than with the five million jobs the economy added over those two years — an achievement not likely to be repeated this time, especially not in the face of harsh spending cuts.
    Anyway, I don’t believe that it’s all political calculation. Watching Mr. Obama and listening to his recent statements, it’s hard not to get the impression that he is now turning for advice to people who really believe that the deficit, not unemployment, is the top issue facing America right now, and who also believe that the great bulk of deficit reduction should come from spending cuts. It’s worth noting that even Republicans weren’t suggesting cuts to Social Security; this is something Mr. Obama and those he listens to apparently want for its own sake.
    Which raises the big question: If a debt deal does emerge, and it overwhelmingly reflects conservative priorities and ideology, should Democrats in Congress vote for it?
    Mr. Obama’s people will no doubt argue that their fellow party members should trust him, that whatever deal emerges was the best he could get. But it’s hard to see why a president who has gone out of his way to echo Republican rhetoric and endorse false conservative views deserves that kind of trust.
  225. Good column from Krugman, especially this:
    It’s worth noting that even Republicans weren’t suggesting cuts to Social Security; this is something Mr. Obama and those he listens to apparently want for its own sake.
    I liked this section, which is applicable to many parts of the “Administratino That is Not All There”:
  229. blowmeobama:
    The bonds are only worth whatever someone will pay for them
    Nope. They are not even worth that. The bonds are not like regular Treasury bonds. They are a “special” bond that CANNOT be sold on the open market, period. Can’t be done. No one “invested” in that trust fund by buying those bonds other than our govt itself. They can only be sold to and redeemed by the govt.
    They are IOU’s from the govt to Social Security, nothing more. Calling it a trust fund is a joke, because in the end the money HAS to come from the general treasury regardless.
  230. A tea party group put this press release out today, and it’s good. Say what you want about the R’s, but they got into the House and promptly passed their budget. Like it or not (and much of it I don’t) they went on record and put it out there to be judged. The Dems, meanwhile, want to just keep obfuscating and posturing and pointing fingers without ever taking a stand on a what they want to do and HOW they are going to do it.
    They are really really disgusting me right now. My former party elected a bunch of fucking irresponsible children to Congress. If you had told me during the Clinton years that I’d ever see a Democratic Party that could spend two years in power with neither the President nor the Senate even proposing a budget, I’d have said it could never happen.
    “The Senate has a legal obligation to pass a budget every year but has not done so for more than two years,” said Jenny Beth Martin, National Coordinator of Tea Party Patriots.
    “Democrats have controlled the Senate and the White House since the election of 2008, and the House of Representatives up until this year. Certainly they could have passed any budget they desired, including one with tax increases and spending increases. But they chose to ignore the 800-day gorilla in the room because they don’t want to be on record supporting a budget that actually does what they want. Then the public could hold them accountable for their cowardly and irresponsible behavior in the face of national fiscal calamity.”
    “This week marks the 800 Days of Infamy—800 days without passing a budget,” said Mark Meckler, National Coordinator of Tea Party Patriots. “This Senate, controlled by Democrats, will go down as one of the most irresponsible, do-nothing Senates in the history of the institution. May history judge them as harshly as they deserve, and may the electorate throw many of them out on their collective hind ends in 2012.”
    What we’re watching is the death of the Democratic Party.
    Or, at least the Democratic Party as most of us have known it. The one that has taken its identity in the modern era from FDR and the New Deal, from Keynsianism and the social safety net. Despite any of its other shortcomings (and they are myriad), the Democratic Party has stood as a symbol for commitment to these principles. As recently as 2006, Democrats took over the House in a surprise wave election because the public feared that George Bush would destroy Social Security, and they trusted the Democrats over Republicans to secure it. Just like George Bush, Obama now wants to “save” Social Security….by giving those who want to burn it to the ground the the very thing they’ve wanted for decades.
    Any member of any party who participates in this effort does not deserve, and should not get, the support of anyone who values Social Security and cares about its preservation. The amount of damage that the Democrats under Obama have been able to do has been immeasurable, by virtue of the fact that they are less awful than George Bush. But where George Bush failed, Obama will probably succeed.
    Which means we’re watching another casualty here: Democracy. Or at least, the illusion that we live in a democratic society. The public, regardless of party, overwhelmingly opposes cuts to Social Security and Medicare. But elected officials of both parties are hell-bent on conspiring to bring the programs to an end. They seem to have come to grips with a fact that the public has not: their tenure in office depends on carrying out the wishes of oligarchical elites.
    We’ll fight this, because it’s the right thing to do. We will probably lose. But we will make it as painful as possible for any politician from any party to participate in this wholesale looting of the public sphere, this “shock doctrine” for America. And maybe along the way we’ll get a vision of what comes next. Because what we believe in as Americans, and what we stand for, is not something the Democratic party represents any more.
  233. And now the R Senators are ramping up the pressure:
    Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, with six Republican colleagues, sent a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid Thursday, urging him to unveil the Democrats’ budget proposal.
    ——
    “By forgoing a recess week,” read the letter, “the Senate was given an opportunity to begin this necessary work immediately. Yet to date, no budget work has been scheduled.”
    The letter points out that not only was no budget work scheduled this week, but the majority leader had scheduled a vote and a debate on a Libya resolution. While the resolution was withdrawn after objections that the forgone recess should be used to work on a budget, still nothing was scheduled.
    “We ask that you, as Majority Leader, call for the latest Democratic budget to immediately be made public, in all of its detail, and brought through the statutorily-mandated legislative process,” says the letter. “If our colleagues wish to raise taxes or propose spending cuts, the American people have a right to see that plan on paper.” (As debt talks ramp up, spending cuts not enough for some senators)
    The senators ended their letter with a warning that they may continue to object to considering matters unrelated to the budget until the Senate is given a chance to consider and debate the Democrats’ proposal.
    If the R’s are smart, they will keep up this “we are the adults in the room” and “why won’t you tell the people up front what you want to do?” tack. It’s a winner.
  234. By the way, new polling i saw today has Obama’s polling bombing in Pennsylvania, taking on heavy water, if he cant win PA, he loses the election.
  235. Breaking news. Obama caves.
    I listened this morning to my news radio. The White House confirmed that Social Security and Medicare are now on the chopping block.
    After reading so many fucking apologists here, telling me that the rumors were false, that there would be no SS or Medicare cuts, I can tell you I was shocked, shocked I say.
    So, I turn on Mourning Joe, and who is there, gloating like a pig who found a brand new sty in which to wallow? Eric Fucking Cantor, refusing to even allow for any tax increase, but smiling because Obama has just fucked himself and his chances for a second term.
    SS cuts and Medicare will hurt the lower, middle class citizens, and even more so, hurt the elderly and the sick, the very same people who Democrats were supposed to protect.
    These cuts will not only damage the Obama Label, it will hurt millions. Now, and for the foreseeable future.
    Go ahead, stay loyal to the president. Ignore WaPo, NYT, and others, simply because you don’t want to believe the message. But the fact is, only Nixon could go to China; only Obama could destroy Social Security and Medicare, two of the most successful social programs ever devised in this country.
    There have been many successess in the alternative madicines history. In my own family, my husband’s grand-aunt (grandmother’s sister) had a stroke and a guy in their village mixed up a few things and made her swallow that potion(for lack of a better word) and he said, she would get up from the bed and take her own bath in 10 days and she did. Now, one can pooh-pooh that but what do they think are in their blue and red pills? There is a movement in India to catalog these ‘home-remedy’ substances and institute research to analyze their effects on human body. My personal inclination is to trust western medicine but there are good doctors I personally know who have been effective in alternative medicine.
  238. Jake Tapper hit on Plouffe at the press briefing, and Carney doubled down on stupid for Preznit Awesome:
    TAPPER: OK. And lastly, comments by Senior Adviser David Plouffe were criticized today. Earlier this week, he said, quote, “The average American does not view the economy through the prism of GDP or unemployment rates or even monthly jobs numbers. People won’t vote based on the unemployment rate, they’re going to vote based on how do I feel about my own situation: Do I believe the president makes decisions based on me and my family?”
    And Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney said that those comments were — he suggested they were out of touch, and he said that if Plouffe worked for him, he would fire him.
    CARNEY: Well, I understand that we’re engaged in the – or rather, the Republicans are engaged in a primary campaign, trying to get some media attention. I don’t know where, you know, the voters that some other folks might be talking to — but — or — but most people do not sit around their kitchen table and analyze GDP and unemployment numbers. They talk about how they feel their own economic situation is. And they measure it by whether they have a job, whether they have job security; whether their house – whether they’re meeting their house payment, whether their mortgage is underwater; whether they have the money to pay for their children’s education or they don’t; whether they’re dealing with a sick parent and can afford that, or whether they can’t.
    They do not sit around analyzing The Wall Street Journal or other — or Bloomberg to look at the — you know, analyze the numbers. Now, maybe some folks do, but not most Americans. I think that’s the point David Plouffe was making; that’s the point the president was making just moments ago in his statement in the Rose Garden.
    -Jake Tapper
    The arrogance is astounding. Just fucking astounding. I got news for ya cupcake: we uneducated hicks out here in the hinterlands do indeed have an interest in all that mathy stuff. We regularly sit around our kitchen tables and talk about an article in Bloomberg, and the latest job reports, and and what the numbers say. You betcha. People with high school educations have had long insightful conversations with me about trade balances while standing in line at fucking WalMart.
    I know you guys up there in DC like to think of us as poor savages staring blankly at the confusing world, and operating like dumb sheep on how we feel about life, while waiting on our betters to esplain to us how it all works, but that is YOUR fucking ivory tower fantasy – it’s not reality.     http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/post/what-was-the-point-of-that-rose-garden-speech/2011/03/29/gIQAoN3q3H_blog.html
    What was the point of that Rose Garden speech?
    Following the release of the dreadful jobs numbers, President Obama appeared in the Rose Garden this morning. However, it was entirely unclear why he was there or what his plan is for digging the economy out of the deep hole in which we find ourselves.
    The speech, if you can call it that, seemed to be a disconnected collage of one-liners and excuses. He started off by explaining that “the debate here in Washington has been dominated by issues of debt limit, but what matters most to Americans, and what matters most to me as President, in the wake of the worst downturn in our lifetimes, is getting our economy on a sounder footing more broadly so the American people can have the security they deserve.” Is he saying he’s working on something the public doesn’t care about? Not clear. Later he tied the two together, adopting the GOP position that the failure to address the debt in impairing growth. (“The problems in Greece and in Europe, along with uncertainty over whether the debt limit here in the United States will be raised, have also made businesses hesitant to invest more aggressively.”)
    And throughout his tone alternated between dismissiveness (“We’ve always known that we’d have ups and downs on our way back from this recession”) to hectoring (“There are bills and trade agreements before Congress right now that could get all these ideas moving. All of them have bipartisan support. All of them could pass immediately. And I urge Congress not to wait”). Despite a boatload of evidence that government spending is not the way forward, he still insists that more “investment” is needed: “We’ve got to rein in our deficits and get the government to live within its means, while still making the investments that help put people to work right now and make us more competitive in the future.”
    As one GOP operative remarked to me regarding the ragged performance, “They don’t know what to do.” And it shows. An experienced conservative communications guru surmised that “they knew they had to have him say something today because if they didn’t they’d have gotten creamed. ( ‘Is he hiding? What’s he got to say for himself?’) But they constantly put him out there and it’s wearing everyone down.” The guru added, “Their policies are the problem, and the communications portion is just a layer on top.”
    As for the policy part of it, the president’s left-leaning base still thinks the answer is more of the same. Paul Krugman insisted today, “The situation cries out for aggressively expansionary monetary and fiscal policy.” How more aggressive could the Fed be without entirely eradicating the value of the dollar? But, alas, there is never enough spending to assuage the Keynesian cultists.
    It is then not so much a lack of “message discipline,”as the punditocracy likes to obsess over, but rather the failure, complete and glaring, of the economic policies of this president that is the problem. Until the White House figures out how to fix its economic agenda it should keep the president inside and under wraps. He does himself no good by revealing that he’s got no clue what to do about the dreadful economy.
  243. Wow homeopathy remedies get a bad rap because of charlatans. St John’s Wort works because those that take it have identified themselves as less than happy. Suffering from mild depression they become proactive. That in and of itself is the cure. I have worked with lots of people stuffed to the gills with SSRIs and not witnessed any life changing rebirths. What I can attest to is freaking swimming. Take an adult with a major depressive disorder put them in a big pool with direct sunlight everyday and within a month you see changes. Physically the flabby become toned. Grown men who needed horse tranquilizers to get a moments rest sleeping the night away. I am not a therapist but I swear being beats talking about being or medicating being any day of the week.
  244. moon, it wasn’t tapper saying that. It was carney. Jake actually did pretty good in calling the administration out on Plouffe’s original comment that americans don’t care about the unemployment number.
  245. Moon, OUCH, that was a damning article. The gloves are off for President Precious now – people are less and less afraid of hitting him hard.
    Yeah, Charlatans abound and hard to separate good ones from the pretenders (I am not into homeopathy but know of good things about Ayurveda).
  247. in the end the money HAS to come from the general treasury regardless.
    Hillary said (in 2007 or 2008) that all that’s necessary is for the economy to improve, so that general revenue can pay what Congress has borrowed.l
  248. Aromatherapy works, and homeopathy is at least a harmless placebo.
    I’m sure no one is suggesting that the nation scrap all the Vioxx, er, Big Pharma drugs. Natural remedies are something each patient may choose, usually in addition to whatever Big Pharma drugs they are taking.
    Pelosi to Obama: Dems ‘Firm’ in Opposition to Entitlement Cuts
    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi speaks to reporters June 16 on Capitol Hill in Washington.
    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, coming out of a meeting with rank-and-file Democrats, declared Friday that lawmakers in her party are “firm” in their opposition to Medicare and Social Security benefit cuts, as the White House puts entitlement programs on the table in bipartisan deficit-reduction talks.
    Pelosi’s comments underscore the tension flaring within the Democratic caucus over the potential course of talks as they pick up steam after temporarily breaking apart amid GOP objections. As President Obama coaxes Republicans back to the bargaining table, Democrats are expressing concern that he might offer too many concessions in order to gain their support on raising the debt ceiling before an Aug. 2 deadline.
    “They’re as firm as ever on what I have been saying,” Pelosi told reporters Friday afternoon, as she shuttled between meetings. She said Democrats do not want to “subsidize tax cuts for the rich” on the backs of seniors and others, and are demanding “no benefits cuts in Medicare and Social Security.” She also said she has “serious concerns” about what might happen with Medicaid.
    “This is a big deal. … It’s a 10-year bill and we want to work together to have something that has bipartisanship, that has balance,” she said. “It has to be reflective of our values.”
    Still, ahead of another meeting scheduled for Sunday evening, Pelosi said she’s “optimistic.”
    Krugman does have his moments of clarity.
    &&&&&&&&
    I was a huge Krugman fan for the longest time, and he originally sided with Hillary in the primary. For the general, he pointed out flaws in McCain’s proposals, and leaned toward Obama.
    Throughout the….uggggh, it hurts to say it, “The Obama Administration”, he’s run cover for them some of the time, but more often, he has been either quietly critical, or a little more vocally critical.
    Overall, he’s been fairly critical of Obama, although he’s divided his time by also pointing out how Repubs are even more insane (but that he wishes Obama had a spine, and would stand up to them).
  256. I don’t know. I checked to see who the writers are and recognized Steve Clemons. Comments seem to come from Obummer supporters or Dems.
    Nah, he’s got those bases covered. Besides that, I don’t think Hillary is up for a Primary. She is exhausted as it is from living on a plane and traveling 350,000 miles a year for the last 3.5 yrs without any rest.
    Her best bet and the least wear and tear on her, I think, is either a Draft Nomination or waiting to see if he is Impeached.
  260. The Rethugs would like nothing more than to have SS and Medicare destroyed by Barry’s own magical unicorn dust. They want him to take the blame from voters while they stack up their bars of gold with more tax breaks.
    And another gem as to why they stand behind him and are afraid to criticize him:
    As absurd as it may seem, there is much complexity in being both Black and a critic of President Obama. As our nation’s first African American president, Obama carries a historical eminence in the Black community.
    For most, he appears to be an untouched, can-do-no-wrong figure that represents the progression of a race. Many Blacks from the 1960s civil rights era never thought they would see the day the White House welcomes a man of color. Obama ran his campaign on change and hope, and many African Americans believed that change had finally arrived.
    Economic outlook worsens as U.S. adds only 18,000 jobs in June
    ===============
    Job growth came nearly to a halt in June, the federal government said Friday with surprisingly grim new data that challenge expectations that the economy is poised to bounce back from its spring lull.
    The disappointing report comes at a sensitive time, as President Obama and Congress engage in high-stakes negotiations over raising the legal cap on the $14.3 trillion federal debt. The weaker job market could make Democrats all the more reluctant to agree to spending cuts that might further slow the economy in the service of reducing long-term budget deficits.
    Employers added 18,000 jobs in June, a trivial number in a country with 150 million workers, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent from 9.1 percent, the Labor Department reported. It was a far worse report than expected: Economists had forecast 105,000 new jobs.
    The jobs survey was exceptionally bleak even beyond those headline numbers. Job growth in April and May was revised downward by a combined 44,000 positions. Temporary employers, often a leading indicator of future activity in the labor market, cut 12,000 jobs. And roughly 272,000 Americans dropped out of the labor force, perhaps out of frustration with their job prospects. The unemployment rate would have risen even higher had they continued their job hunts.
    A broader measure of unemployment that includes those who have given up looking for jobs out of frustration and those with part-time work who want a full-time job rose to 16.2 percent, from 15.8 percent.
    Financial markets dropped after the data were released, with the Standard & Poor’s 500 was down 1.1 percent at noon. Money flooded into U.S. Treasury bonds, viewed as a safe port in a storm, with the interest rate the federal government must pay to borrow money for a decade dropping to 3.02 percent, from 3.13 percent.
    It was, “all in all, an employment report with no redeeming features whatsoever,” said Barclays Capital economist Peter Newland in a research note. “Employment, unemployment, hours and wages all disappointed.”
    Speaking in the Rose Garden late Friday morning, President Obama said Congress can take action “right now” to help boost job growth, including streamlining the patent process, maintaining the payroll tax cut and advancing trade agreements. He then shifted focus to the debt-reduction package that the White House is negotiating with congressional leaders, saying that the uncertainty over whether lawmakers will raise the nation’s debt limit is keeping businesses from hiring.
    “The sooner we get this done, the sooner that the markets know that the debt limit ceiling will have been raised and that we have a serious plan to deal with our debt and deficit, the sooner that we give our businesses the certainty that will need in order to make additional investments to grow and hire,” Obama said.
    “I view this number as a call to action,” said Austan Goolsbee, the president’s chief economist, in an interview. “This number illustrates this thing that we knew, which is we’ve got to get the growth rate up. … There are all of those things we could do right now to support growth, where there’s bipartisan agreement. They’re keyed up just sitting there. When you see jobs reports like this, that should make it clear that we need to stop bickering, and get these things done.”
    House Republican leaders seized on the unemployment news at a Friday morning news conference, slamming the White House for “29 straight months of 8-percent-plus unemployment” and noting that the administration had said when it rolled out its stimulus package that unemployment would not exceed 8 percent.
    “The president always tells us he inherited a bad situation,” House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (Texas) said at the news conference with House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) and other GOP leaders. “I concede the point, but he has made it worse, and after 21 / 2 years, it is time for him to take responsibility and answer the question, ‘Where are the jobs?’”
    On one hand, the weak reading on the job market shouldn’t come as a complete shock. For the first six months of 2011, the nation has averaged 126,000 new jobs created per month, which is just about what one would expect with the soft 2 percent growth in economic activity over that period.
    At the same time, there had been some recent signs that a spring slowdown in the economy was a mere soft patch. And the report throws cold water on the idea, embraced by many economists, that the economy was held back by temporary factors — such as higher oil prices and the Japanese tsunami-earthquake — in the first few months of 2011 and was poised for a burst of growth as those problems ease.
    The steepest losses in June, as they have been throughout 2011, have been in government jobs. With state and local governments slashing workers by the tens of thousands to try to get their budgets balanced and the federal government posting heavy job cuts, as well, overall government employment fell by 39,000 positions in June alone. That followed 48,000 in jobs cut in May.
    But unlike earlier in the year, when private-sector job creation was strong enough to make up for the decline in government jobs, businesses appear to be pulling back, not hiring at the same rate they were earlier in the year.
    For example, transportation and warehousing employment, a good proxy for broad economic activity, rose by only 3,600 in June, compared with 11,500 in May. Financial sector employers cut 15,000 jobs, after adding 14,000 in May.
    GOP presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty laid blame for the weak job creation on the administration.
    “The president promised if we passed the massive stimulus package that unemployment wouldn’t go above 8 percent, we are now at 9.2 percent,” Bachmann said. “Unfortunately, millions of Americans are suffering today as a result of the president’s broken promise and his policy of attempting to create jobs through massive government spending that has added over 35 percent to our national debt.”
    Romney said that “today’s abysmal jobs report confirms what we all know – that President Obama has failed to get this economy moving again.”
    Pawlenty said the country “will have continued anemic growth and disappointing job creation so long as Barack Obama is president. ”
