I am an atty and have sued doctors but also have a fed doctor friends. By and large, most doctors could care less about patients. They are very arrogant and view themselves as better than others. My doctor friends openly admit it's all about the money/billings. I actually joined this MDVIP program down here and pay an extra $1500 a yr (in addition to my monthly premium of $3053 for family of 5 PPO) so I can have immediate access to my doctor whom happens to be a rare exception to the rule.

Much as I’d like that to be true i think the fact that the crisis is occurring on another continent in another country doesn’t (in the eyes of his worshippers) compare to katrina, a disaster involving US citizens on our shores.
-----------------------------
But Basil, the images are in our living room. Look, I will agree with you to this extent. We do not need to worry whether this is THE Katrina moment of his presidency. Why not? Because by the time we do the post game wrap up to determine why we lost there will be many more Katrina moments of his presidency to choose from. Why? Because we have intractible problems, a deeply flawed leader and a dishonest media that denies us accurate feedback from reality.

To Bambi I would simply repeat the words of Demosthenes before the Athenian Senate when they were confronted with a similar series of catastophes when confronting the threat posed to that democracy by the autocratic Phillip of Macedon:

"You take your marching orders from the enemy (not interdicting the North Korean ship, etc.); you have never formed any plan of campaign for yourself (his uncoodinated stabs on the economy); never forseen any event until someone tells you it has happened (the pro democracy rebellion in Iran). . . Our business is not to speculate on what the future may bring but to be sure it will bring disaster, unless you face the facts and consent to do your duty."

Basil9 and others, you have been lucky, there are many out there that are in it for the money.
They are intelligent and went into the field that make the most money, and many have told me that why they went into the field.
I worked with a Canadian trained doctor, and I have to say he really is the only one that tried to save money and give the best care. He also was in the field because he really care about patients.

WE Need to get capitalism out of healthcare!!!!

confloyd,

I guess I've been relatively lucky with doctors.

The one who helped treated me for my previous condition was a doll and his staff made it possible for me to qualify for treatment. He actually called me several times when blood test results were low when he was worried that I needed 'helper' drugs.

My current Dr. (for lymphoma) is equally concerned. True, i have gone for repeat tests but i have thought it's so she can rule out other possible disease causes and administer the best treatment.

BTW, I have been equally impressed by 99% of the nurses I come in contact with. You guys are amazing. I go for 6-hour treatments and i cannot believe yet competent and efficient, not to mention kind, the staff is.

I have been very lucky with family doctors. My mother's was amazing and went above board to take care of her needs. My doctor is the same. I have had her for over 15 years now.

I have heard horror stories from others though. The biggest problem here is that most of the good doctors are not taking on new patients. Having to go far out into the city outskirts is the result for many. Others just go to medi-clinics as the need arises.

wbboei, I have to say very few of the doctors that I have worked with in 20 years actually give a crap about their patients and neither does the hospitals.
Its quiet funny everytime I changed jobs and went to a new hospital they had a mission statement that stated how they care for the sick. B.S. it was all about money everytime.
Healthcare is a dirty industry, it cares about money only, don't kid yourselves.

Confloyd: I suppose that is true. There is always a bell curve. The ones who inspire us are the ones who have not forgotten the oath they took at the beginning of their career and realize that what separates them from most other professions is their earnest desire to help people within the constraints of a largely dysfunctional system. The weaker ones get discouaged with the battle and succumb to the profit motive. The strong ones persevere, fight on for the rights of their profession, and point the rest of us in the direction of an improved health care system which respects and caters to the needs of its patients. That is the essence what comes though when I read the comments of SHV, for whom I have immense respect. It is more than enough to convince me that there are good doctors out there, just as there are a few good lawyers too. As is often true, the problem is systemic. Fix the system and there will be even more good doctors, lawyers and politicians. The arbitrator told me yesterday that the problem with this country today is everyone can be bought, you just need to figure out the right price. Fortunately, that is not true.
