Time For A Special Prosecutor To Investigate Barack Obama, Part I

It’s time for a special prosecutor to investigate Barack Obama.

Prosecutor Elliot Ness Patrick Fitzgerald needs help to clean up Chicago. Americans need a special prosecutor to stop the Michael Corleone family Obama Chicago Culture Of Corruption from moving to Nevada Washington, D.C.

Big Media has not done any vetting of Obama and investigation of his claims, preferring instead to have their legs tingle at the mere mention of another flowery speech. Now, it is long past times for a Special Prosecutor to be brought in to assist Elliot Ness Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.

The massive Obama slush fund of more than $30 million campaign dollars, an amount much higher than the slush fund days of Nixon and Bebe Rebozo, must not be allowed to be utilized to provide the type of corrupt high paying jobs Democratic Illinois Governor Blagojevich envisioned.

A Special Prosecutor should investigate the selling of a U.S. Senate seat. A Special Prosecutor needs to investigate the role of the government funded Obama transition members and contacts between the mothership of Chicago’s Culture of Corruption and its expansion to the nation’s capital.

Some Big Media outlets are just now beginning to take notice of what we have written about since April 2007. Gawker, while defending Obama writes:

And, you know, the full extent of the involvement of Obama’s team and maybe Obama himself is yet to be discovered. [snip]

Tony Rezko! Hey, guess who’s tied up in all this mess? Convicted felon Tony Rezko, who once sold Obama some land, and donated money to Obama’s pre-presidential campaigns. So Rezko donated to Blagojevich in exchange for jobs for his friends and associates. Blagojevich’s wife was Rezko’s real-estate agent too, of course. And Rezko is now shorthand for “corrupt dealings in Chicago involving Barack Obama,” even though the Obama-Rezko connection remains the smallest of potatoes compared to what went on with everyone else in Chicago politics.

As in Watergate, Gawker is asking what we have asked, without answers, for a long time:

What Did Obama Know and When Did He Know It? Now we learn, over a couple weeks, what role Obama and his inner circle played in this mess. Obama says he hasn’t been in contact with Blago. But was he in contact with the FBI and the US Attorney? Did his campaign report the bribe requests to the FBI? Who were the bribe requests made of, exactly? Drip, drip, drip—Obama’s best chance here is that he comes off as aiding an investigation into a corrupt pol, and he gets style points for aiding an investigation into a corrupt pol from his own party. But if they weren’t directly aiding the investigation, even after the bribery… well, why not? Plus the investigation’s been going on forever. How much did Obama know about it and what dealings did he have with Blago in the years before this went public?

Elliot Ness Patrick Fitzgerald will discover who “Candidate 5” is. We believe it is Obama’s “godfather”, Emil Jones, the president of the Illinois State Senate. “Candidate 5” offered a “tangible” bribe for the U.S. Senate seat from Illinois. A Special Prosecutor is needed in Washington, D.C. to supplement the investigations required regarding Obama’s entire history.

When Barack Obama resigned his Senate seat earlier than any other similarly situated incoming president we surmised that it was to avoid the newly filed Senate ethics complaint. The Senate ethics complaint noted the similarities between convicted Republican Senator Ted Stevens and the circumstances of the Obama purchase of his mansion with financial assistance from the insufficiently capitalized Rezkos.

Obama ignored the freezing tenants in housing he helped obtain for Rezko business interests. Then when he became a state senator working with Emil Jones Obama ignored the freezing tenants while taking slumlord Rezko money. Rezko then received favors from Obama which helped Rezko obtain tens of millions of dollars for a business he had no experience in. The circumstances of Obama quid pro quo dealings have never been investigated.

The many articles we have written documenting the connections to corrupt Iraqi money potentially being the finance source for the Rita Rezko financing of the Obama mansion is a subject for a Special Prosecutor. This has never been investigated.

Many of the Hopium addled are trying to explain away Obama’s involvement with Blagojevich by citing the Blagojevich insults against Obama in the wiretap transcripts and Fitzgerald’s comments that at this time the prosecution does not have evidence detailing Barack Obama’s involvement. But this is a falling out among thieves and the investigation in great part is just beginning. Elliot Ness Patrick Fitzgerald said at his news conference that the investigation is not near complete and that he needs “to find out what happened.” As the appropriately named Swampland writes:

At a press avail this afternoon, Obama said, “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.” But just a few weeks ago, David Axelrod, Obama’s top adviser, said this on Fox News, about Obama, the governor and the search for a Senate replacement: “I know he’s talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them.”

Axelrod is now in Watergatesque mode and saying those statements are inoperative. Of course, in his recent Meet The Press interview Obama denied he was involved in the New York Senate replacement fight because he was so busy with the replacement situation of his senate seat. If Obama had a candidate for his vacated Senate seat that alone contradicts his claims of non-involvement.

The Blagojevich insults against Obama are merely proof that Blagojevich has learned that:

Obama simply cannot be trusted. Obama cannot be trusted on any issue. Obama cannot be trusted by his friends. Obama cannot be trusted by his enemies. Obama cannot be trusted.

Blagojevich wanted (in the words of The Godfather films) to “wet his beak” but Obama wanted to keep the connections and other politicians that he carries around like so much change in his pockets.

And let’s remember that Blagojevich is not the central character in this opera of corruption. Elliot Ness Patrick Fitzgerald must know by now that only imprisoning a Governor or a Senator (as he did with Republican Governor Ryan and Senator Fitzgerald) will not root out the deep mystic ties of Illinois corruption. A full forensic examination and mass imprisonment of Illinois officials is needed. And with the Chicago corruption spreading to Washington, D.C. a Special Prosecutor is needed there to root out the first big twigs of corruption planting themselves in the rich soil of D.C. corruption.

Republicans must make themselves useful. Republicans must demand a Special Prosecutor and not merely carp and issue impotent statesments about the Chicago Culture of Corruption.

Said Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the new GOP House whip: “The serious nature of the crimes listed by federal prosecutors raises questions about the interaction with Gov. Blagojevich, President-elect Obama and other high ranking officials who will be working for the future president.”

Added Robert M. “Mike” Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee: “Americans expect strong leadership, but President-elect Barack Obama’s comments on the matter are insufficient at best.”

Republicans must demand a Special Prosecutor. The Justice Department must act before January 20. Citizens must petition and demand a Special Prosecutor [We will notify our readers of any on-line efforts or petitions to demand a Special Prosecutor to uproot the first strong seedlings of corruption transplanted to Washington, D.C. from corrupt Chicago.]

Citizens must demand answers. Some questions:

It also appears that Obama friend Valerie Jarrett, an incoming senior White House adviser, is the person referred to repeatedly in court documents as “Candidate 1.” That individual is described as a female who is “an adviser to the president-elect” and as the person Obama wanted appointed to the Senate seat. Court papers say that “Candidate 1” eventually removed “herself” from consideration for the Senate seat.

In a Nov. 11 phone conversation with an aide, Blagojevich talked at length about “Candidate 1” and said he knew that Obama wanted her for the open seat but “they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. (Expletive) them.”

One day later, Jarrett, a Chicago businesswoman who is one of three co-chairmen of Obama’s transition team and was a high-level adviser to his presidential campaign, made it known that she was not interested in the seat. And, on Nov. 15, Obama announced that Jarrett would be a senior White House adviser and assistant for intergovernmental relations.

What did Jarrett know and when did she know it? What did Obama know and when did he know it?

What did Strautmanis know and when did he know it? We need a Special Prosecutor to block the corruption before it spreads even further.

At least one top aide to Obama, Michael Strautmanis, previously worked for Blagojevich. Obama has appointed Strautmanis to serve as White House chief of staff to the presidential assistant for intergovernmental relations and public liaison. The Chicago native was legislative director and counsel to Blagojevich when the governor was a member of Congress and then helped Blagojevich win the governorship in 2002. There is no indication that Strautmanis is involved in the case.

Obama, once again pretends to be the piano player in the Whore House unaware of what was going on in the bedrooms upstairs.

“Like the rest of the people of Illinois I am saddened and sobered by the news that came out of the U.S. attorney’s office today. But as this is an ongoing investigation involving the governor, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to comment on the issue at this time,” Obama said – and then he said he wasn’t aware of Blagojevich’s maneuvering.

The Democratic National Committee which moved operations to Chicago also must answer questions from a Special Prosecutor. Obama and the B.O. administration as well as national Dimocrats cannot investigate themselves. A Special Prosecutor is needed.

Again, Blagojevich is not the central character in this Chicago opera of corruption. Antoin “Tony” Rezko is more of a central character than the governor. And we know that Rezko is Obama’s bagman. It is Rezko who fixed governmental and quasi governmental boards in Chicago and twisted them to his corrupt schemes.

Any doubt about the central role of Obama’s slumlord friend and bagman Antoin “Tony” Rezko is quickly abandoned after reading the Fitzgerald complaint. [READ THE FULL COMPLAINT HERE.]

A Special Prosecutor is needed right now to investigate the Obama Culture of Corruption.

  1. An article published on November 5, which contradicts Barack Obama’s claims to not have discussed his replacement with Blagojevich:

    http://www.connecttristates.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=217582

Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That’s one of Obama’s first priorities today.

He’s meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement.

There’s already been speculation about his selection…from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Chicago’s south side who co-chaired Obama’s presidential campaign, to recently-retired state senate president Emil Jones, to the governor himself.

It’s likely the governor will make his decision quickly so the new senator will get some seniority before newly-elected senators take office in January.

Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

KHQA’s Alexis Hunt is speaking with Illinois Senator John Sullivan today about his thoughts on that replacement process, his time working with Obama in the state senate, and if there’s a chance Sullivan might play a role in the Obama administration. Watch KHQA News at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. tonight to hear what he has to say.

    State of Shame
    By Scott Turow

HERE in Chicago, where we are accustomed to news that challenges the thresholds of belief, we awoke Tuesday to find that our governor, Rod Blagojevich, had become the second Illinois chief executive in a row to be subjected to criminal charges.

The 76-page criminal complaint implies that Mr. Blagojevich was such an inveterate schemer that despite being the obvious target of a three-year federal grand jury investigation into trading state jobs and contracts for campaign contributions, he had to be taken out of his house in handcuffs to prevent him from selling off the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

Even by Chicago’s picaresque standards, Tuesday’s developments are mind-boggling, even more so to a former federal prosecutor like me with an understanding of some of the nuances of the federal criminal justice system. The most worrisome element is that Mr. Blagojevich’s shameless behavior seems to have put Chicago’s United States attorney, the estimable Patrick Fitzgerald, into the unenviable position of having to bring a case before he was ready.

Mr. Fitzgerald has lived by the Machiavellian motto that if you shoot at the king, you had better kill the king. Mr. Fitzgerald’s highest-profile prosecutions — like those of I. Lewis Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, and of Mr. Blagojevich’s predecessor as governor, George Ryan — have been assembled methodically, with an almost obsessive desire to tie down evidentiary details before charges are returned.

Furthermore, Mr. Fitzgerald has a history of trying not to use the justice system to pre-empt the operation of other democratic institutions. Thus, despite a more than five-year investigation, the Ryan indictment was withheld until after the governor left office in 2003, and Mr. Fitzgerald did not oppose a defense request to schedule Mr. Libby’s perjury and obstruction justice trial after the 2006 midterm elections.

Undoubtedly one of the events Patrick Fitzgerald has no desire to influence is his own possible reappointment as United States attorney for four more years (all United States attorneys can be replaced by the incoming administration). Mr. Fitzgerald’s effectiveness as a prosecutor is unquestioned, and the state’s senior senator, the Democrat Dick Durbin, has said Mr. Fitzgerald can stay in the job if he wants to.

But the Justice Department may have other thoughts. Mr. Fitzgerald has held the job since October 2001, some may argue that a position with such extraordinary discretionary powers should not lay in the same hands for 12 years.

Moreover, Mr. Fitzgerald’s bare-knuckle methods have rankled many in the Chicago bar. For example, he got George Ryan’s chief of staff, Scott Fawell, to testify against his former boss by threatening to imprison Mr. Fawell’s girlfriend for perjury.

In his news conference Tuesday, Mr. Fitzgerald indicated that he hadn’t planned to indict Governor Blagojevich until next spring, meaning that the prosecutor was going to wait until his own fate was decided. Instead, with wiretap evidence piling up that showed that Mr. Blagojevich was intent on selling the Obama seat in exchange for a substantial personal benefit, like a high-paying job for himself or his wife, Mr. Fitzgerald was forced to make the arrest. He decided that he could not even wait for the grand jury investigating Mr. Blagojevich to meet on Thursday and indict him.

Bypassing the grand jury and proceeding through a criminal complaint instead effectively puts the case against Mr. Blagojevich on the express route. Mr. Fitzgerald will now have only 20 days to either give the governor a preliminary hearing — which would amount to free discovery for his defense lawyer — or return an indictment. Given Mr. Fitzgerald’s frank appeal for information from the public at his news conference, it’s obvious that his case is not fully buttoned up, and that Mr. Blagojevich forced the prosecutor’s hand.

All of this news comes with personal chagrin for me because I was Governor Blagojevich’s first appointment to the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission, a body created his first year in office. (For the record, I have never made a campaign donation to him.) The commission judges ethics complaints against state officials, supervises ethics instruction, and tries to carry out an overall mandate to improve the ethical climate in Illinois.

Ethics reform in Illinois is often regarded as an oxymoron, and I admit that the commission’s arduous efforts to strengthen our ethics laws have met with little success. Speaking solely for myself, I hope the governor’s arrest galvanizes public outrage and at last speeds reform.

One change that is obviously indispensable is overhauling the campaign contribution laws in Illinois, where there are literally no limits on political donations — neither how big they can be or who can give them. The lone exception is a law, passed over a Blagojevich veto, that takes effect Jan. 1, prohibiting large state contractors from donating to the executive officer who gave them the business. Otherwise, anybody — union officials, regulated industries, corporations, lobbyists — can throw as much money as they like at Illinois politicians.

This astonishing state of affairs persists 32 years after the Supreme Court, in Buckley v. Valeo, recognized “the actuality and appearance of corruption resulting from large individual financial contributions” in approving limits on such donations to candidates for federal office. One can only hope that even in Illinois we are too ashamed now to tolerate business as usual.

  3. Great article…trust me, if this were Bill/Hillary, Kenneth Starr would already be issuing subpoenas/indictments.

  4. Admin,

Excellent analysis! The Republicans must step forward and push for a special prosecutor. I hope McCain leads the way!

  5. America voted for change… Chicago style! Way to usher in a new Administration.

I really want to give Americans the one finger salute for allowing us the great pleasure of seeing Chicago political corruption on a national level.

  6. Reading Taylor Marsh is so fun these days. She’s practically elevated the Great One to sainthood.

    Read this little gem:
“Frankly, I’m not a fan of Jackson and never have been. I find him arrogant and sexist, with an image that reminds me of everything that’s wrong about politics today. Evidently, he’s also stupid, allowing ambition to trump ethics, something that would never fly anywhere near President-elect Obama.

  7. Filbertsf: HI!

Change you can believe in, Chicago style. What a friggin nightmare. It makes my head swim.

Admin: Thank you for your fantastic and intelligent work. It is a beacon in all this darkness.

  8. Thankyou for posting that trip down memory lane with racebaiter denver will burn if bambam aint nominated –JJ2.

That tape reveals something else that is important. The interrogator is not interrogating the guest. On the contrary she is treating him like her own witness on direct examination, with a leading questions which take him to a certain path to predetemined result with alot of head nodding to conote appoval of what he is saying.

And who praytell is the interrogator? Why Nora O’Donnell– The antithesis of honest journalism. And who praytell is her employer? Why MSNBC of course–also the antithesis of honest journalism.

I can think of no better example of why international corporations should be barred from owning media. This is the kind of disingenuous crap you get. It aint about the truth–it is a staged performance for a certain audience.

  9. Taylor Marsh also has this oh-so-cute poll, gleaned from MSNBC, that Beacon of Truth, citing a LA Times/ Bloomberg poll:

    POSITIVE FEELINGS TOWARD PRES.-ELECT OBAMA
    Presidential Victory 74%
    Handling Transition 79%
Where will he lead the country 59%
    &&&&&&

Golllllll-ly. Peachy keen. Ah feel a whole lot better now.

The RGB Times conducted a poll, and it too found overwhelming support for Obama:

Michelle is going to be a greater influence on fashion than Jackie Kennedy 98%
Obama will bring peace to the Middle East 96.5%
Obama had nuthin’, I mean absolutely nuthin’, to do with those corrupt Illinois politicians 93%
Obama will win a third term in 2016 68%
Obama is a “pretty cool dad” 108%

RGB Times vows that they use rigorous polling methods, and are not funded by the $30 million slush fund pile o’ money left from the election that was raised by innocent little old ladies and trusting liberals.

  10. Even a Kennedy Should Earn the Title
    By Marie Cocco

WASHINGTON — As a former New Yorker, I am occasionally obliged to ask impertinent questions. Such as:

How can Democrats, who ridiculed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as an inexperienced political wannabe, now embrace the idea of elevating Caroline Kennedy — who hasn’t served a day in public office — to Hillary Clinton’s New York Senate seat? How, indeed, can the same “progressives” who opposed Clinton’s election as president because they were repelled by the notion of extending the “Clinton dynasty” now be keen on perpetuating the Kennedy dynasty through an appointment?

As a longtime admirer of Sen. Ted Kennedy, I am embarrassed.

The iconic Massachusetts senator and others in the family are actively promoting John F. Kennedy’s daughter — who famously shunned the gritty political world for the sanctuary of public service through her private endeavors — to take the Senate seat once occupied by her late uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, and now held by Clinton. A decision on filling the vacancy should Clinton be confirmed as secretary of state is up to New York Gov. David Paterson, who could be forgiven, in moments like this, if he fleetingly wishes that he’d not ascended to the office after predecessor Eliot Spitzer’s indiscretions.

What, exactly, is the case to be made for Caroline Kennedy?

Certainly she would bring her family’s Rolodex, which is one route to credibility in a state where campaigns are extraordinarily costly — a total of $96 million was spent on the 2000 Senate race.

An argument is also made that Kennedy would keep aflame the liberal dreams her father ignited decades ago, and which her Uncle Ted has ably nurtured throughout his career. No doubt she is bright and committed to public service.

But if these are the sole qualifications, plenty of New York Democrats meet them.

They are, as a group, a famously liberal bunch. None can plausibly argue that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and members of the New York congressional delegation who are said to be interested in the seat aren’t sufficiently committed to public service; they’ve spent their lives in it. As for naming a woman to the job, as Paterson is being pressured to do, New York has a trove of experienced political women who’ve proved themselves in the trenches. Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg isn’t one of them. She’s never taken the risk of running for office or sullied herself with the day-to-day messiness of public life.

Comparisons to Clinton’s 2000 Senate bid are invalid. Clinton ran for the office, doggedly visiting all 62 counties and campaigning through long days and nights that took her from African-American churches in Brooklyn to Hudson Valley apple farms to agricultural fairs upstate. Her Republican opponent outspent her. The media coverage was relentless. Clinton won by a double-digit margin.

For all its cosmopolitan aura, New York’s politics are defined by ancient grievances and clannish alliances. Ethnic and racial rivalries boil. There’s an enduring rift between upstaters who resent New York City’s dominance of state affairs, and downstate city and suburban residents who send most of the tax money to state coffers. Cuomo, one of Kennedy’s chief rivals for the Senate appointment, is the former husband of one of her cousins.

Arcane squabbles routinely throw New York politics into utter turmoil. Example: Since Election Day, when Democrats wrested control of the state Senate from Republicans to gain full power for the first time since the New Deal, Albany has been consumed by a threat of three Democratic lawmakers to throw their support to Republicans, thus denying their own party the right to preside over the Senate chamber. Paterson was forced to broker a power-sharing solution to placate the dissidents — a deal came just days ago.

A U.S. senator doesn’t have to get into this swamp, but it’s good to know how to navigate around it. Kennedy doesn’t. Not that she couldn’t learn.

In fact, if she wants to be senator, there is a path to the job — the special election necessary to fill the Clinton seat in 2010, no matter who gets the interim appointment. A campaign would allow Kennedy to prove her mettle. Voters could take the measure of her as a potential leader, not as a celebrity.

I’m sure those in the far corners of the state would welcome her, just as they welcomed Clinton. A Kennedy is a big draw. And there isn’t a county chairman alive who would pass up the chance to make the annual rubber-chicken dinner a certain sellout.

I believe the powerful pols simply direct contractors to donate to the other candidates or PAC’s that they designate – that is the law in Chicago re contractors doing business with the city, too and it hasn’t made any difference in the overall level of corruption.

I’ll have to look at the law that takes effect on Jan 1.
    * * * * *
Also, it seems that they are attempting to legislate regarding holding a special election to suit this one individual – Blago – never a good policy. Within current law, the IL legislature could simply impeach and remove Blago from office. This would put Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn in the Gov’s office with the task of appointing to fill the empty senate seat. However, Pat is generally a straight arrow who doesn’t play ball in the cesspool inhabited by Rezko, Obama, Rahm, Blago, Axelrod and of course, Daley. (Gov and Lt. Gov run separately, unlike Prez/VP.) A special election (while generally a higher form of democracy) is not necessary if there is a sitting governor – just which one is the question.

  14. Admin> remind me to never play chess with you. A special prosector is a brilliant idea. If we go down that path then there is one individual in all the country who is made to order for that task. He was a legendary prosecutor and later US District Judge. He has a proven track record of success in bringing down corrupt big city political machines in places like Newark, Jersey City and Atlantic City. Watergate prosecutors conferred with him before lauching their probe. Playboy did a movie on him Tiger In Court. If the powers that be are serious he is the man.

Strategically, you must begin with the premise that corruption in Chicago is a way of life. It permeates the system, and it does not good to clip the weeds, it must be eliminated root and branch as a way of life. Otherwise, you end up with Governor Fitzgeral being sent to jail for corruption, Governor Blag promises reform and ends up following his predecessor to reform school–ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

The answer is to institute a comprehensive reform program based on the principles of de-Nazification, which were adopted in Germany in the aftermath of World War II. Lesser measures like those which were instituted in the Teamsters Union to clean out the Mafia are insuffient. This is a culture of corruption. Strong medicine and a strong leader are required.

  15. Obama calls for Illinois governor to resign
By MIKE ROBINSON, Associated Press Writer Mike Robinson, Associated Press Writer
    1 hr 22 mins ago

CHICAGO – President-elect Barack Obama called for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign on Wednesday, hours after the embattled governor reported for work amid charges he plotted to sell Obama’s vacant Senate seat.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the president-elect agrees with other prominent politicians in Illinois and elsewhere that “under the current circumstances, it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.”

Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday, accused of scheming to enrich himself by selling Obama’s open seat for cash or a lucrative job for himself. The governor has authority to appoint the replacement.

In response to questions from The Associated Press, Gibbs said Obama believes the Illinois legislature should consider a special election to fill the seat.

Blagojevich (bluh-GOY’-uh-vich) is out on bond and has denied any wrongdoing.

The governor left his home on Chicago’s North Side early Wednesday and waved to the media before quickly getting into a dark SUV without talking to reporters.

A short time later, Blagojevich’s SUV arrived at his office.

“He is still the sitting governor of Illinois today, now, and that is not something we have any say in or control of,” U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said in unveiling corruption charges on Tuesday against the 52-year-old governor.

The governor’s attorney, Sheldon Sorosky, said Tuesday he didn’t know of any immediate plans for the governor to resign. Blagojevich believes he didn’t do anything wrong and asks Illinois residents to have faith in him, Sorosky said.

“I suppose we will have to go to trial,” he said.

Blagojevich could still appoint someone to fill Obama’s seat despite the charges that he tried to barter it away for cash or a plum job in what Fitzgerald called “a political corruption crime spree.”

But it would take a lot of nerve and Blagojevich would have to hurry because state lawmakers are racing to snatch away his power to appoint a new senator and put it in the hands of voters.

“No appointment by this governor, under these circumstances, could produce a credible replacement,” U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Tuesday after the governor, a second-term Democrat, was arrested on charges of conspiring to commit fraud and soliciting bribery.

Until state lawmakers call a special election, though, Blagojevich still has the power to fill the Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Obama.

Obama was not accused of any wrongdoing.

“I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so we were not — I was not aware of what was happening,” Obama said. “And as I said, it’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”

Prosecutors stepped in and had the governor arrested because he was on “what can only be called a political corruption crime spree,” Fitzgerald said.

Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, said he is prepared to call the Illinois House into session as early as Monday to set a special election to fill the seat. Illinois Senate President Emil Jones said he had something similar in mind.

In Washington, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., made it plain he didn’t want to seat anyone under such a cloud, saying the charges “are appalling and represent as serious a breach of the public trust as I have ever heard.”

Charged along with Blagojevich was his 46-year-old chief of staff, John Harris, who was accused of taking part in the schemes to enrich the governor.

The FBI said in court papers that Blagojevich was overheard conspiring to sell the Senate seat for campaign cash or lucrative jobs for himself or his wife, a real estate agent. He spoke of using the Senate appointment to land a job with a nonprofit foundation or a union-affiliated group, and even held out hope of getting named Obama’s secretary of health and human services or an ambassador.

According to court papers, the governor tried to make it known through emissaries, including union officials and fundraisers, that the seat could be had for the right price. Blagojevich allegedly had a salary in mind — $250,000 to $300,000 a year — and spoke of collecting half-million and million-dollar political contributions.

“I’ve got this thing and it’s (expletive) golden,” prosecutors quoted Blagojevich as saying about the Senate appointment on federal bugs in his campaign office and wiretaps on his home telephone, “and I’m just not giving it up for (expletive) nothing. I’m not gonna do it.”

Besides scheming to swap or sell the Senate seat, Blagojevich — a former congressman, state lawmaker and prosecutor — was accused of trying to strong-arm the Chicago Tribune into firing editorial writers who had called for his impeachment.

Blagojevich was charged with two counts: conspiracy to commit fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and solicitation to commit bribery, which is punishable by up 10 years. He was released on his own recognizance following an afternoon hearing.

Blagojevich becomes the latest in a long line of Illinois governors to become engulfed in scandal. He was elected in 2002 as a reformer promising to clean up after Gov. George Ryan, who is serving six years in prison for graft. He was re-elected to another four-year term in 2006.

Obama will bring peace to the Middle East 96.5%
Obama had nuthin’, I mean absolutely nuthin’, to do with those corrupt Illinois politicians 93%

That is why Caroline Kennedy should receive no special consideration for the job of senator.

  23. The powers that be failed to recognize that Obama is not and never will be the one to carry the dream of Dr. King forward. If they had taken one look at where he came from they would have realized that the selection of a flawed candidate like him could send the exact opposite message than the one they intended to send. The other possibility of course is they did not really give a damned about the message they wanted power and in him they saw the perfect puppet. I am inclined to believe the latter viewpoint.

  24. Will Blago flip on Obama? Potential sentences:

    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/10/fitzgeralds-legal-strategy/?hp

Here are the likely sentencing guidelines that will be applied, according to Mr. Barkow, based on the amount of money involved:

–If he sought $200,000 to $400,000, he could be sentenced to 78 to 97 months (57-71 with a plea)
–If he sought $400,000 to $1 million, he could receive 97-121 months (70-87 with a plea)
–If he sought $1 million to $2.5 million, he could face 121-135 months (87-108 with a plea)

“And these are under the 2003 guidelines,” Mr. Barkow wrote in an e-mail message. “Under the current ones, the sentence would be even higher, but he’d probably get the benefit of the lower ones.” Judges, of course, have significant discretion to modify sentences, he noted.

  25. Admin: I believe the sentencing guidelines do not address the question of where a convicted defendant will wile away the minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years of his all expensed paid holiday courtesy of the US Bureau of Prisons. Thus, that matter is within the discretion of the prosecutor and an important item to be negotiated into any plea agreement, subject to court approval. Just looking at Blag I do not think he would do particularly well in the general population–just a hunch. They throught Gordon Liddy in with the general population and he encountered the worst of the worst. But he was tougher than any of them and in the end they learned not to fuck with hoppe. Governor Blag is not that tought. He needs club fed.

  26. Michelle Obama Is The “Specifically Named Individual” On Page 64 of The Affidavit Submitted by FBI

    excerpt from page 64:

ROD BLAGOJEVICH said that the consultants (Advisor B and another consultant are believed to be on the call at that time) are telling him that he has to “suck it up” for two years and do nothing and give this “motherfucker [the President-elect] his senator. Fuck him. For nothing? Fuck him.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH states that he will put “[Senate Candidate 4]” in the Senate “before I just give fucking [Senate Candidate 1] a fucking Senate seat and I don’t get anything.” (Senate Candidate 4 is a Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois). ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated that he needs to find a way to take the “financial stress” off of his family and that his wife is as qualified or more qualified than another specifically named individual to sit on corporate boards. According to ROD BLAGOJEVICH, “the immediate challenge [is] how do we take some of the financial pressure off of our family.” Later in the phone call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated that absent getting something back, ROD BLAGOJEVICH will not pick Senate Candidate 1. HARRIS re-stated ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s thoughts that they should ask the President-elect for something for ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s financial security as well as maintain his political viability. HARRIS said they could work out a three-way deal with SEIU and the President-elect where SEIU could help the President-elect with ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s appointment of Senate Candidate 1 to the vacant Senate seat, ROD BLAGOJEVICH would obtain a position as the National Director of the Change to Win campaign, and SEIU would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future.

  35. Illinois governor ignores Obama’s call to resign
By DEANNA BELLANDI and CHRISTOPHER WILLS, Associated Press Writers Deanna Bellandi And Christopher Wills, Associated Press Writers
    38 mins ago

CHICAGO – His career in shreds, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich clung defiantly to power Wednesday, ignoring a call to step down from President-elect Barack Obama and a warning that Senate Democrats will not let him appoint a new senator from the state.

“Everyone is calling for his head,” said Barbara Flynn Currie, a leader in the Illinois Senate and, like the governor, a Democrat.

One day after Blagojevich’s arrest, fellow Illinois politicians sought to avoid the taint of scandal-by-association.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. said at a news conference in Washington that he was Senate Candidate 5 in the government’s criminal complaint — a man Blagojevich was secretly recorded as saying might be willing to pay money to gain appointment to Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Jackson said he had been assured by prosecutors he was not a target of the investigation, and he emphatically said he had not engaged “whatsoever in any wrongdoing.”

Other Democrats in Washington edged away from calls for a special election to fill Obama’s place in the Senate, hoping that Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn would soon become governor and fill the vacancy on his own. That would assure the party of holding the seat, and on a far faster timetable than any balloting would allow.

Ensconced in his downtown office, Blagojevich gave no sign he was contemplating resigning, and dispatched his spokeswoman, Kelley Quinn, to say it was “business as usual” in his 16th-floor suite, situated a few blocks from Obama’s transition headquarters.

“At the end of the day, the top priority for our office is to serve the people, and we have not lost sight of that, nor will we lose sight of that,” Quinn said.

One day earlier, federal prosecutors released a thick document that included excerpts of wiretapped conversations in which the governor allegedly schemed to enrich himself by offering to sell Obama’s Senate seat for campaign cash or a lucrative job inside or outside government.

Blagojevich, whose 52nd birthday was Wednesday, is charged with conspiracy and solicitation to commit bribery, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and 10 years, respectively.

More than 24 hours after the arrest, Obama joined other prominent Democrats from his state in calling for Blagojevich’s resignation.

“The president-elect agrees with Lt. Gov. Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois,” Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said in response to questions from The Associated Press.

Asked whether Obama supports a special election, Gibbs said Obama believes the Illinois General Assembly should consider how to fill the Senate seat and “put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the people of Illinois.”

Top Senate Democrats were more pointed in a letter circulated among the rank and file for signatures.

Blagojevich’s resignation, followed by an appointment made by a new governor, would “be the most expeditious way for a new senator to be chosen and seated in a manner that would earn the confidence of the people of Illinois and all Americans,” wrote Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and the party’s second-ranking leader, Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois.

They added that if Blagojevich chose to “ignore the request of the Senate Democratic Caucus and make an appointment we would be forced to exercise our Constitutional authority … to determine whether such a person should be seated.”

The Constitution gives the Senate authority to refuse to allow a member to be sworn in.

Top Illinois lawmakers have said they are preparing to call the Legislature into session as early as next week to set a special election to choose Obama’s successor. Many officials said Blagojevich should be impeached if he refuses to leave.

Still, it was unclear what incentive the governor had to give up his office.

His attorney said Tuesday that he is innocent, and a resignation might make him appear guilty. The office also gives him a certain amount of clout, which can help him raise money for his defense. And he may need the salary — federal prosecutors say their wiretaps also caught Blagojevich complaining about his financial problems.

“He appears to listen to no one, and his conduct becomes more outrageous as time goes on,” said Steve Brown, spokesman for Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Chicago Democrat.

Brown also said that no matter when lawmakers act, Blagojevich could sit on the legislation and still pick a senator. “Despite our best efforts, the governor could play hide the ball. That is an inescapable reality,” Brown said. “I’m hoping that’s not the case.”

The anger toward Blagojevich came amid more fallout over the scandal and new details about the case.

One of his top deputies, Bob Greenlee, resigned without announcing why. Greenlee, 33, was promoted to be a top aide to Blagojevich in June, earning $149,000 a year. Two deputy governors are listed in the criminal complaint, one as a potential Senate candidate to replace Obama and another as a Blagojevich lieutenant who was deeply involved in an alleged scheme to strong-arm the Chicago Tribune into firing some of its editorial writers critical of Blagojevich.

Neither deputy governor was identified by name in the complaint.

I was wondering the same thing. Kennedy’s influence may be waning, since his days are limited.

  38. Politico makes a good observation on the latest Obama hypocrisy and Hopium addition bullying:

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1208/Blagojevich_questions_censored_on_Transition_site.html?showall

President-elect Barack Obama’s Transition today launched “Open for Questions,” a Digg-style feature allowing citizens to submit questions, and to vote on one another’s questions, bringing favored inquiries to the top of the list.

It was suggested when it launched that the tool would bring uncomfortable questions to the fore, but the results so far are the opposite: Obama’s supporters appear to be using — and abusing — a tool allowing them to “flag” questions as “inappropriate” to remove all questions mentioning Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich from the main pages of Obama’s website.

The Blagojevich questions — many of them polite and reasonable — can be found only by searching words in them, like “Blagojevich,” which produces 35 questions missing from the main page of the site.

“Given the current corruption charges involving Blagojevich, will ‘serious’ campaign finance reform that takes money completely out of politics through publicly funded elections be a priority in the first term?” asked Metteyya of Santa Cruz, California.

“This submission was removed because people believe it is inappropriate,” reads the text underneath it.

    Also removed as “inappropriate”:

“In light of the recent corruption scandals (Blagojevich, Rangel, Jefferson, Stevens, etc) that have dominated the political scene,is there any ethics legislation being crafted to actually curb corruption and prevent another wave of nixonian cynicism?”, a question from “lupercal,” of Gainesville.

And: “Is Barack Obama aware of any communications in the last six weeks between Rod Blagojevich or anyone representing Rod Blagojevich and any of Obama’s top aides?”, a question from Phil from Pennsylvania.

Community reporting systems like this are often vulnerable to abuse from committed partisans — YouTube has wrestled with a parallel problem — and the only solution is conscious efforts to remedy it.

So far, Obama’s team does not seem to have stepped in to allow uncomfortable questions to rise to the top, and instead is allowing his supporters to sanitize the site.

  39. Re: I was wondering the same thing. Kennedy’s influence may be waning, since his days are limited.

But, Caroline Kennedy’s influence with the Huckster and the Mrs. is to the max, a repeat performance of the Gov of the state of NY is almost a sure thing IMHO.

A thought occurred to me that the Huckster may shut down the freedom of speech on blogs and the internet after his crowning. Did you all see where the media is scrubbing their websites of past reports of the Huckster and his connections and meetings with Blagojevich? We are no longer in a free country – our country has been bought.

  46. Hey where is everyone?? I want to know what you all think of Blag not stepping down?? 47. re: Caroline Kennedy – hopefully, this takes her off the table:

After speaking in praise of retiring Chief Judge Judith Kaye at an event on West 44th Street last night, I asked Paterson if the news out of Illinois is affecting his decision-making process about Hillary Clinton’s vacant senate seat.

He said it made him “more resolved” to find someone based on “merit” and to pick someone who can win in 2010.

“I’m not going to comment on anything that happened in any other state, but what I would say is that just hearing the news makes me more resolved to the fact that this has to be a merit process,” he said. “The only thing I should be thinking about is the merits of the candidates. And the only thing the candidates should be thinking about is demonstrating that in lieu of an election that they would serve the state the best. Interestingly enough I was reading that there have been, there have been, I think in the last century, over 80 times when governors have had to appoint senators. And since 1960, there have been 48. Of the 48, 10 have just decided to serve out the term and not run for election. Of the 38 that ran for election, only 18 won. So, less than half actually won. So, as I think about that, because of the precious nature of seniority in Washington, I’m hoping that a candidate that I select would win in 2010. Because what’s very key in the U.S. Senate, and what the U.S. senators that I’ve spoken to have apprised me, is that seniority is very important.”

Nairobi — The government has blocked Kenyan members of President-elect Barrack Obama’s extended family from talking to the media.

Family members will have to ask permission from government before issuing making any statement concerning Obama.

The government will also vet all those seeking information about the family.

“We are doing this because we want to ensure better flow of information.

The government has decided that you should inform its officers who will be based here if you want to address the media,” Athman Said, an Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Heritage, told the Obama family in Kogelo yesterday.

A proposed Obama Cultural Home comprising of a museum, a gallery, a library and a leadership centre will be put up in Kogelo, Said told the family. A cultural officer, Dorcas Obege, will be assigned to Kogelo to vet visitors and others seeking information about the family.

  55. Obama Was Mute on Illinois Corruption

The president-elect could use his bully pulpit to drive a clean-up.
    By JOHN FUND

This week Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on charges that he conspired to sell Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat, among other misdeeds. At first the president-elect tried to distance himself from the issue: “It is a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment.” But it quickly became clear that Mr. Obama would have to say more, and yesterday he called for Mr. Blagojevich to resign and for a special election to fill the vacant Senate seat.
APWhat remains to be seen is whether this episode will put an end to what Chicago Tribune political columnist John Kass calls the national media’s “almost willful” fantasy that Mr. Obama and Chicago’s political culture have little to do with each other. Mr. Kass notes that the media devoted a lot more time and energy to investigating the inner workings of Sarah Palin’s Wasilla, Alaska, than it has looking at Mr. Obama’s Chicago connections.
To date, Mr. Obama’s approach to Illinois corruption has been to congratulate himself for dodging association with it. “I think I have done a good job in rising politically in this environment without being entangled in some of the traditional problems of Chicago politics,” he told the Chicago Tribune last spring. At the time, Mr. Obama was being grilled over news that he bought his house through a land deal involving Tony Rezko, a political fixer who was later convicted on 16 corruption counts. Rezko is mentioned dozens of times in the 76-page criminal complaint against Mr. Blagojevich.
Mr. Obama has an ambiguous reputation among those trying to clean up Illinois politics. “We have a sick political culture, and that’s the environment Barack Obama came from,” Jay Stewart, executive director of the Chicago Better Government Association, told ABC News months ago. Though Mr. Obama did support ethics reforms as a state senator, Mr. Stewart noted that he’s “been noticeably silent on the issue of corruption here in his home state including, at this point, mostly Democratic politicians.”
One reason for Mr. Obama’s reticence may be his close relationship with the powerful Illinois senate president Emil Jones. Mr. Jones was a force in Mr. Obama’s rise. In 2003, the two men talked about the state’s soon-to-be vacant U.S. Senate seat. As Mr. Jones has recounted the conversation, Mr. Obama told him “You can make the next U.S. senator.” Mr. Jones replied, “Got anybody in mind?” “Yes,” Mr. Obama said. “Me.”
Starting in 2003, Mr. Jones worked to burnish Mr. Obama’s credentials by making him lead sponsor of bills including a watered-down ban on gifts to lawmakers. Most of Mr. Obama’s legislative accomplishments came as result of his association with Mr. Jones.
In 2002, Mr. Obama turned up to help Mr. Blagojevich, a staunch ally of Mr. Jones, win the governor’s mansion. Rahm Emanuel, Mr. Obama’s incoming White House chief of staff, told The New Yorker earlier this year that six years ago he and Mr. Obama “participated in a small group that met weekly when Rod was running for governor. We basically laid out the general election, Barack and I and these two [other participants].”
Mr. Blagojevich won, but before long, problems surfaced. In 2004, Zalwaynaka Scott, the governor’s inspector general, said his administration’s efforts to evade merit-selection laws exposed “not merely an ignorance of the law, but complete and utter contempt for the law.” Nonetheless, Mr. Obama endorsed Mr. Blagojevich’s re-election in 2006.
This spring, many Democrats were so disgusted with Mr. Blagojevich that state House Speaker Michael Madigan drafted a memo on why Democrats should impeach Mr. Blagojevich. Mr. Madigan’s “talking points” compared the corruption going on in the state to a tumor that must be removed.
But Mr. Madigan’s move drew a rebuke from Mr. Jones. The Chicago Sun-Times story at the time quoted Mr. Jones saying he thought it was wrong for the speaker to “promote the impeachment of a Democratic Governor. . . Impeachment is unwarranted in my opinion, and should not be used as a political tool.”
Many people were curious who Mr. Obama would side with in the dispute. Would it be with those Democrats who wanted to move aggressively against an apparently corrupt governor or with his old Chicago ally, Mr. Jones, who preferred to wait? Mr. Obama did neither. He kept silent. (I emailed the Obama campaign about Mr. Blagojevich’s problems in June, but my question was ignored.)

Don Boudreaux To his credit, Mr. Obama did call Mr. Jones in September to urge passage of an ethics bill banning some office holders from accepting money from a business that has a $50,000 or larger contract with the state. The bill passed and takes effect on Jan. 1.
Mr. Obama has spoken out forcefully against corruption outside Illinois. Kathy Tate-Bradish, a Chicago teacher active in education in Africa, gushed on Mr. Obama’s campaign blog during his visit to Kenya last year about his “amazing” speech against corruption during his visit there.
“Corruption is the single biggest thing keeping not only Kenyans, but all Africans, down,” she wrote. “Corruption is just killing them but nobody has been able to speak out against it because they fear for their own security. Barack spoke out against it, publicly, in Kenya. I honestly think the speech he gave will be one of the major factors that turns the tide against corruption.”
Mr. Obama says he plans to return often to Chicago as president. “Our friends are here. Our family is here. And so we are going to try to come back here as often as possible,” he told the Los Angeles Times this month. Perhaps during one of those trips he could find time to forthrightly address the corruption issues that the state will be sorting through in the weeks and months ahead. A president has a powerful bully pulpit. A few words from Mr. Obama could force real and lasting change in Illinois.

    Are they questioning the ONE.

  56. From the MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER:

Only ABC’s World News Questions Obama’s
    Relationship with Blago

The three broadcast networks started their evening newscasts on Tuesday with stories on Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s arrest and corruption charges. All of the newscasts mentioned Blagojevich’s Democratic affiliation, but only in passing. And, only ABC’s World News questioned the details about the Illinois Governor’s relationship with President-elect Barack Obama, while NBC and CBS brushed over the President-elect’s connections with Blagojevich and seemed content to end their investigation of this relationship by reporting on Obama’s statement that he was not aware of what was going on.
ABC and NBC both identified Blagojevich as a Democrat early in their reports. NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams’s introduction to the report by Lee Cowan described the charge as “that the two-term Democratic Governor tried to sell a seat in the US Senate to the highest bidder.” Brian Ross, reporting for ABC’s World News, identified the Illinois Governor as “the boyish looking Democrat branded a greedy, foul mouth politician who tried to sell a US Senate seat to the highest bidder.”
The CBS Evening News, however, did not identify Blagojevich as a Democrat until the very end of Dean Reynolds’s report when an on-screen graphic identified the Governor as “(D) Illinois” and Reynolds claimed that “fellow Democrats worry that whoever he might pick could wind up tainted politically and could ultimately cost the party a valuable seat in Congress.”
[This item, by the MRC intern Lyndsi Thomas, was posted Wednesday afternoon on the MRC’s blog, NewsBusters.org: newsbusters.org ]
The first report on World News by Brian Ross only noted that “President-elect Obama said today he was not involved in any way.” But Tapper appeared later in the broadcast to recap his research on Obama’s relationship with Blagojevich and what contact the two have had regarding the vacant Senate seat.
World News anchor Charlie Gibson first asked Tapper “what contact, or do we know what contacts the Barack Obama camp had with Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy?”:
TAPPER: Well, that of course is the big question, Charlie, because Governor Blagojevich in this criminal complaint speaks quite assuredly as if he knows that President-elect Obama’s not willing to give him other than, quote, appreciation, for naming his preferred candidate to the Senate seat, so with whom did he speak? We’re not getting a lot of answers from the Obama team right now.
Gibson went on to ask, “and, Jake, I know Barack Obama now is not probably going to get within ten thousand miles of the Illinois governor because this is so scandalous but they were close in the past, right?”
TAPPER: Well, I wouldn’t say that they were personally close but they had the kind of symbiotic relationship that a lot of state politicians had. Obama advised him in Blagojevich’s 2002 run. Blagojevich worked for Obama in his 2004. Obama endorsed Blagojevich for reelection very early in 2005 for that 2006 race. Things started to sour, however, when it became clear that Blagojevich was under investigation and they haven’t really had a close relationship professionally in the last couple years. In fact, Obama kept Blagojevich from speaking at the Democratic convention over the summer.
The report filed by Lee Cowan on NBC’s Nightly News was less descriptive and failed to identify David Axelrod, Obama’s chief strategist turned White House Senior Advisor, as the person who claimed Obama had spoken to Blagojevich about his Senate replacement:
COWAN: Barack Obama has advised Blagojevich in the past, even endorsed him, and according to one senior adviser did talk to Blagojevich about his replacement in the Senate. But today aides said that adviser misspoke, and the president-elect himself said he knew nothing about the behind-the-scenes efforts to fill his former seat.
Later, NBC political director Chuck Todd appeared to discuss Obama’s relationship with Blagojevich and claimed that Blagojevich’s statements were the “most exculpatory thing” for Obama: “A lot of concentric circles between Blagojevich and Obama. There’s no question that there’s going to be some folks that Obama’s bringing from Chicago to Washington, some that might have actually had conversations with the governor that are going to be in tape recordings that the FBI was wiretapping with. But there’s clearly no evidence that anything was going on, and if anything, the quotes from Blagojevich in that amazing indictment are the most exculpatory thing there for the President-elect.”
The CBS Evening News was the worst, though, as Dean Reynolds did not detail Obama’s relationship with the Illinois Governor or report on Axelrod’s claims that Obama had talked with Blagojevich about who his replacement should be:
REYNOLDS: Prosecutors said the complaint against Blagojevich did not include Obama and while the extent of contact with Obama’s transition team and the governor are far from clear, the President-elect today was.
OBAMA: I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not–I was not aware of what was happening. And as I said, it’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.

  57. The reporter on CNN was saying that there are a LOT of raised eyebrows over why it took Axelrod two weeks to come out with his statement of ” I was mistaken.”

Hey where is everyone?? I want to know what you all think of Blag not stepping down??
    * * * * * *
Blago is crazy – but he’s not doing anything anyone else isn’t doing in Illinois. Albeit inartfully and with an unseemly level of desperation.

The question isn’t “why isn’t Blago stepping down?” but, rather, why isn’t the legislature moving more quickly to impeach? Pat Quinn is not affiliated with or close to Blago and he has reform credentials in his own right. Blago is from a so-called “independent” arm of the IL Dems that includes among others JJ Jr., Gutierrez, Schakowsky and, yes – Obama. They’re all very close – the media is covering up – again. Hopefully the worm is turning.

  59. O has been very careful never to speak to anyone himself. He speaks through others whom he can later throw under the bus. One has to wonder if these clever crooks have managed to stow away an insurance policy of sorts that could be used against O. Smart crooks usually do have something.

  60. NMF: You’re right. The three-way involving “candidate #5,” the SEIU, Blago and Obama is most consistent with business-as-usual in these parts. The other more direct quid-pro-quo deals are what has prematurely sealed the fate of our greedy idiot of a governor.

My question is the following: So, when will O’s past greedy quid-pro-quo activities catch up with him? (Kenwood manse, Me-chelle’s federally funded pay raise)

  61. Prez-elect Ill.-advised
    Chicago roots may entangle

    By Michael Graham | Thursday, December 11, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Op-Ed

    America, meet the new boss.

Just five weeks ago, in a fit of anti-Bush anger and liberal self-flagellation, 53 percent of the electorate voted to send an unknown, untested and inexperienced Chicago pol to the White House.

Who was Barack Obama? What sort of pol? Nobody knew or, apparently, cared.

Now America is learning to pronounce “Blagojevich” and discovering what The New York Times [NYT] calls “the murky and insular world of Illinois politics.” It’s a realm of open corruption, boundless greed and contempt for the law. And it’s the lifelong political home of President-elect Obama.

    Surprise!

What, you didn’t know that Obama made his bones in the Chicago political machine? You didn’t know, for example, that he won his first election by getting one of his political mentors thrown off the ballot? Or about his financial support from corrupt Chicago moneyman Tony Rezko? Or how Obama and sidekick Rahm Emanuel advised the campaign of a machine hack named Rod Blagojevich?

You didn’t? Don’t feel bad. According to a post-election Zogby poll, a large majority of Obama supporters didn’t know key facts like these, either. And why should they? After all, NBC, The Boston Globe-Democrat and the rest of the Partisan Press had little interest in reporting these stories.

Instead, as the Chicago Tribune’s John Kass just wrote, the media “have been clinging to the ridiculous notion that Chicago is Camelot for months now. It must help them see Obama as some pristine creature, perhaps a gentle fawn of a magic forest, unstained by our grubby politics.”

“Grubby”? After reading the transcripts of Mr. and Mrs. Blagojevich’s political discussions, I needed a shower. Camelot it ain’t. This is the Chicago Way, and for two decades it’s been the Obama Way.

And for the rest of us, this story is just beginning.

Pols don’t spend their careers as players in the corrupt culture of Blagojevich, Rezko and Daley without making embarrassing friendships and compromising decisions. The morning after Obama’s election, skeletons began rattling the doorknobs of closets across Chicago, looking to make their way to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I am not saying that the president-elect is directly involved with the scandalously stupid behavior of Rotten Rod (Full disclosure: I worked on a congressional campaign against Blagojevich and his hatchetman David Axelrod in 1996).

But I am saying that the Blago scandal is the opening of a door into the actual career of Obama rather than the media-made hagiography that’s been passed off as journalism for the past year.

My prediction: Blagojevich is Barack Obama’s Whitewater. Before Bill Clinton became president, the Whitewater story had begun leaking into the media, but nobody paid attention. To most Americans in 1992, the names Webb Hubbell, Susan McDougal and Jim Guy Tucker sounded like the cast of a Branson, Mo., musical act. They meant nothing when Clinton was elected, but all three were in jail – and on the front page – before he left office.

Anybody want to bet that a similar cast of the corrupt and conniving is now sitting in Chicago central casting?

Just before the election, Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose had a fascinating on-air conversation conceding how little they knew about Obama, his policies and politics. “We really don’t know him,” Brokaw confessed.

I was one of the viewers throwing stuff at my TV and shouting, “Then why don’t you ask him, Tom?” Well, it’s too late now.

Six weeks after the election, we’re finally meeting Barack Obama, Chicago-style.

  62. Illinois Underground

That very well might be the Achilles heel that will make the difference. In today’s world, if you cannot get to the candidate, there is always his wife and her job. She need not be qualified, but just employed.

They were so worried about BJC, and his money sources, but don’t give a shXt about the President Elect’s wife, or the Governor’s wife of Illinois.

When corrupt candidates are given a blind eye from the media like this, they begin to believe they can do what they want, and not only survivie but win. The Gov of Illinois, knowing he was under investigation, obviously did not think he was touchable, or he would not have had such conversations.

ONLY A SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR WILL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS, AS THE MEDIA IS TOO WORRIED ABOUT SURVIVAL AND LICKING THE BXTT OF THE PERSON THEY THINK WILL SAVE THE INDUSTRY.

  63. Knowing that the Chicago political machine is so thoroughly corrupt and so large makes it easier to understand how the DNC came to support “the Establishment Candidate”, despite Hillary being portrayed as the Inevitable choice, and Obama the Outsider-Reformer. Which we have known for a long to be a complete crock of sh*t, but which others might start to be waking up to.

Hey, if MSM wants headlines, and eyeballs, take down the Phony Prince of Bill Ayers:

Early January HEADLINE: President-Elect Obama arrested at his home. Inauguration put in jeopardy.

  64. Obama enriching his wife also enriches himself.

Getting a fire-sale house on a mansion results in money in his pocket.

Getting a fantastic mortgage rate (with little money down) keeps money in his bank account over the course of 30 years.

Stealing is stealing, no matter how clever. Stealin allegedly is still a crime. The trick is finding how to track down the well-connected.

  65. The appointment of a special prosecutor has become critical here for the reasons admin suggests and because if the case continues to be handled by the US Attorneys office–regardless of whom that it, that individual will be required to keep the attorney general apprised of developments and the attorney general will be required to keep Obama advised, and in that case it will be easier to minimize the damage and redirect the path of investigation away from obama confederates. I am unclear as to what the procedure would be to appoint a special prosecutor in these circumstances, and whether the special prosecutor law has expired. However, that is the way to go IF we want the truth. Then we must select the right individual, c.f. my commments above at 4:12 pm.

  66. …regarding that article up thread about the media coverage…wow, MSNBC…happened to catch some of Morning Joe this morning…they are going so out of their way…repeating over and over again how Obama has nothing to do with this…and how he is the ‘reformer’ from Illinois…gee, that’s funny, since Blago ran on being a ‘reformer’ from Illinois too!

Mike Barnacle embarrasses himself every time he opens his mouth…he and Chuck Todd have evidently chosen themselves to be O’s protector every time they are on the air…and just how do they know what O has been involved in when O never got vetted…

…can’t help thinking there must be a lot of people wondering now what they don’t know about O or what might start to leak out now with Fitz overriding the MSM

…and for good measure…as someone pointed out earlier…where has the DNC moved to….Chicago…you cannot make this stuff up…

  67. One of the lessons of Watergate: it is not the crime, it is the cover-up.

Hillary had a conversation with the Governor of New York to provide input on the Senate seat she will vacate if she is confirmed as SOS. She freely admitted it. Nothing untoward about that.

Meanwhile the Messiah claimed he had no conversation with the Governor of his state about the senate seat he would be vacated and has no idea the governor was trying to sell the seat. Yet Axelrod said he had in fact spoken with the governor about his replacement and was fond of the names being mentioned.

Furthermore, there is apparently a taped conversation between the governor and unnamed representative of Obama or Obama himself was recommending a specific individual, and the governor demanded illegal compensation for. That individual was referred to as “she”. One day later Valerie Jarret withdrew her name from consideration and accepted a job at the WH.

Jarret was the head of the Chicago Housing Agency that let tenants live in unliveable conditions in Obamas district. She is a friend and mentor to Michelle. Her bona fides are to say the least suspicious.

The only plausable conclusion that I can see is that Obama lied. He lied to cover up the conversation with the governor. Presumbaly he has a legal obligation to disclose the solicitation of a bribe but failed to do so.

The interersting question is what was there in Obama’s past and prior dealings with the Governor and others that would lead him to believe that Obama would be willing to be bribed.

The encouraging thing in all this, of course, is this is merely a complaint. No indictment has been issued. The investigation will take an additonal two years. This complaint was issued because the US Attorney needed to act and was under a legal and ethical obligation to act to prevent the commission of a crime.

Meanwhile Ratboy (Chuck Todd) is claiming that the governor is delusional, the taped conversation is meaningless, the US Attorney is politically motivated, wants to be governor–the little mensch is in a state of high dugeon. I just wish they had someone on that network to challenge the drivel from that litttle weenie.

In the meantime, it is clear that MSNBC has not yet come to terms with the fact that the very man they invested their hopes, credibility and business plan for survival in may at the conclusion of the investigation be shown to be corrupt.

I have got to believe that this information–or at least large parts of it were before the elders of the Democratic Party when they made the fateful decision to select this fraud for the nomination. They assumed the risk. I believe the scam here is not limited to Chicago, but exends world wide.

had a conversation with the Governor of Illinois to provide input on the Senate seat he has already vacated. He claimed Yet the governor had a conversation if not with Obama himself but by one

  68. Baracle is a proven liar. He was fired from the Boston Globe for that very reason. So he ends up where? MSNBC (or cnn). The sigh on his dressing room reads “Welcome Home Liar”. There are bouquets of roses and bottles of champagne waiting for him. So he goes out on the news set, and does the very thing he is paid to do: lie. And he does it with such a flair. He invents facts, advances specious arguments and pretends to know what he is talking about. It would appear that in some cases liars do prosper until the discerning viewer reaches for the channel changer.

  69. wbboei

When people protest, and protect, they usually have something to hide. One can only hope that the criminals and the FBI taped everthing. The Criminals for their ace in the hole and the FBI, because that is what they do.

Too bad this will take so long to get to the bottom of.

Who does appoint a Special Investigator?

  70. New Mexico: as indicated I am not clear. I talked to two people this morning and they thought it would have to be congress. If so then now might be a good time to be thinking about petitions to democratic congressmen in blue dog states to give them the political cover they need to do the right thing, because lord knows those two lightweight magpies Reid and Pelosi will never do the right thing for the country if it happens to conflict with what is politically expedient.

  71. Valerie Jarret had to have been pre-warned about what was going down. Obama as well. Then came the scrambling to sweep everything clean.

The media knows better than to point fingers at this guy and get on his bad side. They know what side their bread is buttered on.

  72. Sen. David Vitter wants to have President Clinton testify during Hillary’s nomination hearings…amazing how everyone is always worried about Bill and Hillary’s “associations”, but Obama, until now, got the pass….infuriating imo.

    That is the plausible inference.

What we do not know is how long the wire tap has been running.

Dollars to donuts they are sweeping the DNC headdquarters in Chicago as we speak.

  74. wbboei…I so agree with your comments…by any chance are the corporate honchos at MSNBC/NBC from Chicago? Capus and the rest of them…

  77. wbboei,

Somewhere, someone will become a scapegoat for the “wondrous one” and said “wondrous one” will continue on his merry way to mow down any obstacle that comes his way.

Steve Capus is the current president of NBC News.

Steve Capus was born in 1963. He graduated from William Tennent High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania and went on to attendTemple University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1986. Capus began his journalism career in radio and print, working at several stations and daily newspapers in the Philadelphia area. He worked at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia in 1986, and became an executive producer with KYW-TV in Philadelphia in 1990.

Capus moved to Charlotte, N.C. in 1993, joining the NBC News team as the senior producer of “NBC Nightside”, an overnight news program.

Capus then continued his career with NBC in Manhattan. During this time, he was the broadcast producer of “NBC News Sunrise” and then the supervising producer for Today. From 1997 to May 2001, Capus was the executive producer of MSNBC’s The News with Brian Williams. He was also the executive producer of numerous NBC News breaking reports and MSNBC special broadcasts. Among them were the 2000 presidential primaries and election, the “Summit in Silicon Valley” with Tom Brokaw and the political series 100 Days, 1000 Voices.

Capus was the executive producer of NBC Nightly News from May 2001 to June 2005. During this time, Capus was the executive producer for NBC News’ coverage of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, the war in Iraq, and the “Decision 2002-2004” political coverage. Capus was then promoted to senior vice president of NBC News.

In November 2005, Capus was named president of NBC News. Capus has served as the arbiter of issues involving ethics, style, standards, safety and other matters that affect the Division’s journalistic bearing. Capus reports to Jeff Zucker, president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal.

Capus has received criticism for many decisions he has had to make throughout his career – especially for those made during his time as NBC News president. He has stated that it is his job to try to balance conflicting opinions and to come to the decision that he believes is the right one.

Jan: go read some of the greek tragedies–or some of Shakespeares tragedies as respects the fall of people like Obama. They will cheer you up and help you see that no highwire act can go on forever when people are shaking the wire. When I am not quite up to all that I close my eyes and recite Humpty Dumpty and I feel better.

  81. LOL…wbboei,

I haven’t read the “tragedies” in years. My fervent prayer is that Obama goes down hard and that Hillary is no where near him when it happens.

  82. This complaint came as a terrible shock to Obama land and the more that ratboy and other confederates try to bamboozle their way out of it the more convinced I become.

They had expected that Fitzgeralds term in office would simply expire, they would simply replace him with an obama stooge and if anyone questioned their motives they would use the counterexample of Judge Gonzalales to fend off further inquiry.

Now what they have on their hands is a potential watergate. As Admin so wisely observes months ago Fitzgerald represents the greatest threat to Obama. If a special prosecutor is appointed–hopefully someone like the one I mentioned they will be sweating bullets. Guaranteed.

  83. Governor blog could end up being deep throat. Before this thing runs its course there will be others. In the fulsomeness of time, I predict Jesse Jackson Jr. is going down. I think it will entrap Obama as well–it is a stick wicket.

  84. Whether or not someone is “from Chicago” has little bearing on whether they are or were influenced by Chicago politics and money.

You don’t have to be physically present to commit a crime:
    a) electronic crimes (dude’s unauthorized access of Gov. Palin’s email)
    b) making someone else commit a crime for you, such as paying to have someone offed.

The tangled web of the corrupt Chicago political winds extends far beyond that city’s borders, well beyond the state. In fact, it probably is extends to Kenya and Indonesia (especially regarding Obama), among other countries.

“Chicago” derives its name from an Quidpro Quoix tribal saying, “windy shore where shady deals made”. This tribe had their first scandal a thousand years ago, involving giving bad directions to Vikings, and then having to tow them out of a swamp, something to that effect. The records on this are still ambiguous.

Second Obama is not one to let a little thing like the truth stand in the way of an invented story.

  96. WASHINGTON – Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would make about $4,700 less as secretary of state than her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice.

Congress late Wednesday lowered the salary for the nation’s top diplomat to keep Clinton’s nomination from running afoul of the Constitution.

An obscure section on compensation for public officials, the Emoluments Clause, says that no member of Congress can be appointed to a government post if that job’s pay was increased during the lawmaker’s current term.

In other words, Clinton, D-N.Y., might have been ineligible to serve in the post because she was serving in Congress when Rice’s salary was raised to its current level of $191,300. So late Wednesday, the House and Senate quietly rolled the secretary of state’s salary back to $186,600, its level in January 2007 when Clinton began her second Senate term.

Even at the lower rate, Clinton would still get a raise over her Senate salary.

Senators now make $169,300 and are expected to receive a raise to $174,000 next year.

President-elect Barack Obama nominated Clinton to the post earlier this month. She is expected to keep her Senate seat pending confirmation by the Senate next year. Republicans and Democrats have said they expect no serious objections to her confirmation

  99. Here is an exerpt from a longer article by the toe sucker in Newmax. He wants Fitz not to be fired, whereas we want a special prosecutor, but in any event there must be no coverup–sunlight is the best disinfectant, electric light the best policeman, etc.
    ——————————————-

In view of the often-close relationship between Blagojevich, Obama, and other key members of the incoming administration, it would be a travesty were Fitzgerald’s head to roll now:

Fitzgerald has already indicted and convicted Antoin Rezko, Obama’s friend and key financial backer, who may have arranged for the then-state-senator to acquire his home and adjoining property on advantageous terms.

Obama and incoming Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel were among an intimate circle of Blagojevich advisers when Blagojevich first ran for governor in 2002. Emanuel says that he, Obama, and others “participated in a small group that met weekly when Rod was running for governor. We basically laid out the general election, Barack and I and these two.”

Obama adviser and media guru David Axelrod worked for Blagojevich in his races for Congress before he ran for governor, although Axelrod (a consultant of uncommon integrity) refused to work for Blagojevich when he ran for governor.

Even though Fitzgerald had already made it clear that he was investigating the governor, following up “very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud” and noted that he had “a number of credible witnesses,” Obama vigorously backed Blagojevich for re-election in 2006.

At the Illinois State Fair that August, ABC’s Jake Tapper reported that Obama told the crowd, “We’ve got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois.”

Fitzgerald has clearly signaled that his probe doesn’t involve Obama, but who knows if it might lead to other Illinois Democrats in the new president’s coterie of aides?

If Fitzgerald stays on the job, we can be sure the investigation will be pursued honestly and thoroughly. His Inspector Javert-like pursuit of the Valerie Plame scandal, aimed at the heart of the Bush administration, should be more than enough proof of his nonpolitical credentials.

Obama shouldn’t hesitate to replace Fitzgerald once his work is done. But if he removes the Illinois U.S. attorney right off the bat, we’ll be left wondering if he did so to cover something up.

Forgive me for posting anything by Morris. I will refrain from doing so in the future. This excerpt from what I just posted leads me to believe that there must be some business arrangement between the two of them. There is some reason for this strange plug which flies in the face of the evidence.

  101. That’s the thing about a hot potato.

You can hold it for one second.
    Maybe two.
    Or more.

But at some point, when it really starts burning your hand, you have to let go.

Those connected to Obama and shielding him eventually will have to ditch him along with whomever else is caught up in the swirling vortex.

Obama, like Nixon, raised ungodly amounts of money to overwhelm his opponent and to control the airwaves. Maybe he too will follow Nixon in a disgraceful exit from national politics.

At that point, the only differences would be a) Nixon actually had a substantial resume to belong in the White House, b) he actually accomplished bi-partisan objectives (getting out of Vietnam, opening relations with China, Earth Day).

Thanks rgb/ But I am mad at myself for this one. The statement about Axelrod being a consultant with “uncommon integrity” is counterintuitive.

Either Morris has some motive to make that statement (like access, or another gig in Africa) or else the only other consultant he was comparing Axelrod to at the time was himself.

I did not notice the statement when I posted it, and I do not wish to give it currency because in the course of time it will be shown to be false.

  106. Thanks rgb/ But I am mad at myself for this one. The statement about Axelrod being a consultant with “uncommon integrity” is counterintuitive.

wbb, I’m glad you left that one in there.

    That was the punchline.

  107. If we can assume Axlegrease is not of “uncommon integrity”, that he’s closer to the slimeball end of the spectrum, then we’ll assume for now that he’s been clever enough not to have gotten caught…yet. But the game is not over.

And Axlegrease has shown he is capable of making mistakes, such as his comments about Obama having talked with Blago, then recanting.

All these people think they are SOOO smart. Then their hubris grows, and they think they can outsmart everyone. Blago is a perfect example.

  108. Jan- generally speaking, when we undertake to cross examine an adverse witness (like Obama, Axelgrease, JJ2 or whoever else it might happen to be, we try to show that the testimony they have proffered is either: i) inconsistent with what they said previously or ii) improbable based on the world as we know it). Obama will err on both counts over the course of time. And it will be more and more difficult for the more legimate press sources to cover for him because they will look increasingly ridiculous in the process.

  109. If we can assume Axlegrease is not of “uncommon integrity”, that he’s closer to the slimeball end of the spectrum,
    —————————————
We can safely stipulate to that.

  110. What remains to be seen is whether this episode will put an end to what Chicago Tribune political columnist John Kass calls the national media’s “almost willful” fantasy that Mr. Obama and Chicago’s political culture have little to do with each other. Mr. Kass notes that the media devoted a lot more time and energy to investigating the inner workings of Sarah Palin’s Wasilla, Alaska, than it has looking at Mr. Obama’s Chicago connections.
    ———————————————
Marie: thanks for posting the article by John Fund. I did not realize there were people on the Tribune like this. I tended to think they were as much in Obamas hip pocket at shill Clarence Page is. In any event, my sense is that the corruption tie to Obama will be shown to be Emile Jones. I think a thorough investigation of that man will show the world exactly what he is. But until we have hard evidence I will not speculate further.

Cesca: “Meanwhile, the Politico and numerous other news organizations have been attempting to make this the first “scandal” of the Obama presidency as if Blagojevich is somehow a member of the transition or an appointee to the future administration. The truth is Obama never endorsed Blagojevich and Blagojevich never endorsed Obama. ”

  116. I do not know if you saw the story in USA today on the town of Kokomo today, but it tracks rather closely a good deal of what I wrote on October 29, and submitted to the McCain campaign but they never acknowledged. It is a little frustrating. . .

    THE TIPPING POINT

When Senator Obama says he wants “spread our wealth” around, and to pursue what he calls “economic justice”, then we need to ask themselves: what does he mean? If you look at his tax plan you will find part of the answer. He plans to increase the tax burden on small business–significantly. . . . But how would that affect average Americans–like you and me?

To answer that question we will visit a typical American town. The town we selected is Kokomo, Indiana 50 miles north of Indianapolis. It is known as the City of Firsts. The commercial automobile was invented here in 1894. So was the pneumatic tire, the carburetor, stainless steel, aluminum casting, chromium-cobalt alloy, and list goes on. It was an important part of the industrial economy.

Those inventions created industries like autos, steel, home products, food processing. The industries produced jobs for the people of Kokomo. And the town grew into a city and the city grew and prospered.

There is a reason for this: when someone has a job, they spend money and typically the dollars they spend passes through several sets of hands before it leaves the community. That creates an infrastructure of schools, factories, churches, restaurants, hardware stores, beauty salons and many other businesses. That was true here for generations.

Today, however it is not so true. The major employers have left the area, or scaled back their operations significantly. Let me show you what I am talking about: (visual), and this (visual) and this (visual). The effect of these closures has rippled across the local economy. Thousands of jobs have been lost. Home prices have plummeted (average home price today is $65-70,000). Tax base has eroded (example). Social services have been cut back provide (examples).

These are the warning signs of a depression. What saves Kokomo and other communities like it is small business. But if you look at your typical small business owner you find that their economic position is fragile. To start the business they borrow. They build the business through long hours of work, and a determination to make it successful. They assume entrepenurial risks and are burdened by overregulation, taxes. The profit margin is razor thin. . . .

Lets meet one of them. Jane Doe has been a resident of Kokomo for 25 years. She and her husband started a fast food restaurant here 17 years ago. Her husband passed away X years ago. Through hard work and long hours she now owns three restaurants. She employs 120 people. We asked her how would the Obama Tax Plan affect her business?

Jane Doe: the profit margin in my business is thin. I can only charge so much for my product. If I charge more, people will buy their meal elsewhere. All of my costs from transportation to products to labor are going up. If I understand the tax proposal of Barack Obama he would increase FICA by 4% and would impose a 4% surcharge on my business as well. I have put a pencil to this and concluded that if this proposal is enacted it will eliminate my profit margin and I will be forced to close my doors. That will be the saddest day in my life because it will end my dream, but also I will have to tell 120 people who I have come to know that they no longer have a job either. That would be a human tragedy.

Lets meet another. Jack and Julie Doe have worked in management jobs at Delco Electronics (now Delfi) a major corporation for over twenty years. They have children in highschool and college. They too worked hard to achieve the American dream. Tragically, that dream has now turned into a nightmare.

Julie Doe: my husband and I have been employed by a company that is part of the beleaguered auto industry. My husband’s job was eliminated recently due to a tight credit market. At the age of 50 he has been unable to secure replacement employment. I was recently diagonosed with lymphoma, am undergoing chemotherapy, but have continued to work. If my employer goes under I may lose my pension and health insurance as well. We live frugally and have put extra money into our 401 k program for our retirement. We cannot sell our home because the market has collapsed. We have been taxpayers for many years, have played by the rules but now we are facing the prospects of bankrupcy and public assistance. My husband and I are very concerned with the Obama’s redistributionist schemes. They could be the tipping point for our family. If my employer goes under and Obama increase the capital gains tax that could be a disaster for us. We will be voting for John McCain and Sara Palin.

Here then is the bottom line: Kokomo is a microcosm of the American economy today. Our country is facing difficult economic times and nobody is immune. If we want our society to prosper once again, then we must resist the tax and spend policies and the redistributionist schemes of politicians like Obama. Lest we forget Senator Obama has never run so much as a hot dog stand, so how could he know what it takes to run a business, much less manage an economy in crisis? The answer will not be found in advisors. The man in charge needs to know what he is doing. We must build jobs rather than eliminate them.

Illinois Gov. Rob Blagojevich Caught in Ebay Scam
EmailWritten by jimbyrd on Dec-11-08 7:12am
    From: http://www.jimbyrd.com

Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich was arrested yesterday on manifold indictments and allegations in an ongoing criminal corruption investigation. Simply put, Blagojevich, who has the authority to appoint Obama’s successor, was trying to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat to the highest bidder. Blagojevich’s conversations were recorded via a wire tap, legally mind you, by U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald. When obtaining the wire tap warrant, Judge Sandler asked what probable cause Fitzgerald had for the wire tap warrant, and Fitzgerald presented the factual evidence that Blagojevich was a Chicago politician, and before Fitzgerald could produce more evidence, Judge Sandler stated sharply, ” Enough said, the probable cause is overwhelming. Request granted!”

This investigation was to be an ongoing concern to ensnare as many villains as possible, but it was brought to Fitzgerald’s attention that Blagojevich, out of desperation for cash, had listed Obama’s Senate seat on the website Ebay. At the bottom of this page, please find a copy of page 77, addendum 1-A, a copy of the Ebay auction web page attached to the complaint filed by Fitzgerald, before being summarily pulled by the online auction house for violating its policy of selling congressional seats without a verifiable PayPal account.

It is apparent that Blagojevich resorted to the Ebay method after his attempts to trade the Senate seat for cash, a high paying job for himself, a Cabinet post in the Obama White House, an ambassadorship, a high paying job for his wife, and as a last resort– the coveted position of Ringmaster for Barnum and Bailey, was met with anemic resistance from the Obama camp.

Parts of the transcript from the recordings are as follows: The Senate seat “is a F*****g valuable thing, you just don’t give it away for nothing.” He was also recorded saying that unless “I get something real good,” he would appoint himself to the vacancy. I’m going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I’m saying. And if I don’t get what I want and I’m not satisfied with it, then I’ll just take the Senate seat myself.”

After reclaiming his sanity from his political equivalent of road rage, Blagojevich settled on trading Obama’s Senate seat for the Speaker of the House position. When it was pointed out to him by someone in the Obama camp that the Speaker of the House position only applied to the House of Representatives and not the Senate, Blagojevich took the high road and made several endearing comments about his close political ally, President-elect Obama, he said that he would not appoint an ally of the President-elect to the Senate vacancy if “I don’t get anything.” He stated that he did not want to give “this motherf-***er [Obama] his senator. F*** him. For nothing? F***him.”

Rob Blagojevich’s wife, First Lady Patricia Blagojevich, coming off her recently successful announcement of December’s selection for her Children’s Reading Club –How the Grinch Stole Christmas-by Dr. Seuss, seemed to be the only one involved who demonstrated any sort of calmness and class during the intense negotiations. She could be heard in the background during a taped conversation of the Governor while he was negotiating with the Chicago Tribune, which owns the Chicago Cubs, to fire its entire editorial staff and withdraw the state’s help with the sale of Wrigley Field. The ever elegant First Lady, as recorded, could be heard telling the Governor to tell Deputy Governor A “to hold up that f***ing Cubs s**t . . f*** them.” When contacted by the Daily Plains for comment about her husband’s arrest, Patricia Blagojevich answered the telephone with the following decorum: Daily Plains: “May I speak with Patricia Blagojevich?” This is Patrica f****g Blagojevich. Who the F***k is calling? The Daily Plains: The Daily Plains. Patricia: F***k you, f**k the Grinch, and f**k Obama.” Click!!

When asked about what contact he’d had with the governor’s office concerning his replacement in the Senate, President-elect Obama today said “Listen, I had no contact with the governor whatsoever, none, zippo, other than what contact I may have had with him, and I was not aware of what was happening with the Senate seat other than what I knew was happening with the Senate seat.” David Axelrod backed away from statements he made in November that Obama and Blagojevich talked about Obama and Blagojevich discussing the replacement for Obama’s Senate seat, and produced a few pictures from his cell phone’s camera to prove it. He has since revised his statement to, “They did not then or at any time discuss the subject other than what might or might not be on the wiretap recordings and it was limited to just that if there is anything at all there, but there is not. It was clearly another misunderstanding.”

The Daily Plains also tried to interview former Governor of Illinois, George Ryan, but the warden at the federal prison, where he is serving a six year sentence for federal corruption, would not allow the interview to take place. Not being discouraged, The Daily Plains tried to interview another former Governor of Illinois, Daniel Walker, but he refused to talk. An aide said he was still bitter from the Clinton snub in 2001. “Apparently he feels slighted”, said the aide, “that Clinton would not pardon him for his conviction for bank fraud and perjury. He pardoned all those other people.”

The Illinois Congress is meeting to block Governor Blagojevichs’ privilege to appoint someone to fill Obama’s Senate seat, and to also discuss the cost savings to the state if they have a separate prison built to house only Illinois’ politicians.

Blagojevich did not have the cash to post bond, but a Chicago style judge allowed him to use the Senate seat as collateral, and he was freed and back at work on Wednesday for the citizens of Illinois.

Obama – Born in the USA?
PRESIDENT-elect Barack Obama is being rocked by a series of shocking new lawsuits charging his election was illegal! GLOBE’s special report reveals why some national leaders believe his Hawaiian birth certificate was forged – and that America’s next commander-in-chief was born in Kenya, which could doom his presidency. It’s must reading.
    &&&&&&&&

    A few things:

“Born in the USA?”. Will Sprinsteen now sing it with a question mark, and redo the lyrics?

It seems that MIB (Men In Black) was prescient, where Tommy Lee’s character explains to Will Smiths’ character that their buying of tabloids was “research”. It turns out the Enquirer yellow rag was the one willing to break the Edwards story, instead of sitting on it.

After one of the recent upgrades to this site, it appears ulrs can now be fully listed out, with leading “http://”. No complaints.

If the real meaning of Chicago, thanks to IllinoisUnderground, is “wild leek” or “striped skunk”, then things really have been reeking in Chicago for much longer than White Man has been on this continent. The stench is permanent. No wonder Obama gravitated to such a city.

  133. JanH, good question.

And sweet that some of the politicians and pundits are calling Blagojevich insane, I suppose in hope that might make him less believable.

I watched a little Morning Joe this am and am so sickened that those I formerly held in high esteem are little more than Blagoasonofbitches.

Shorttermer: I dont know. However, it would seem to me that since Jarrett withdrew her name from consideration by the governor and took a position in the White House she would be hardpressed to reverse it. A reversal now would call her withdrawal into question what did she know about the governors efforts to solicit a bribe and when did she know it. And if she was aware of it then that knowledge could be imputed to bambi since the two are joined at the hip. And that would be a problem since he is claiming ignorance. As for Jesse Jackson I believe he has been outed and it would be hard for anyone to appoint that racebaiter to the seat. I think the Republicans and talk radio would have a field day with it. Beyond that I cannot say.

  135. OMG…is this for real?? is it really possible????? and if so, then why is nobody talking about this at all????

U.S. now only 2 states away from rewriting Constitution
Critic: ‘This is a horrible time to try such a crazy scheme’

A public policy organization has issued an urgent alert stating affirmative votes are needed from only two more states before a Constitutional Convention could be assembled in which “today’s corrupt politicians and judges” could formally change the U.S. Constitution’s “‘problematic’ provisions to reflect the philosophical and social mores of our contemporary society.”

“Don’t for one second doubt that delegates to a Con Con wouldn’t revise the First Amendment into a government-controlled privilege, replace the 2nd Amendment with a ‘collective’ right to self-defense, and abolish the 4th, 5th, and 10th Amendments, and the rest of the Bill of Rights,” said the warning from the American Policy Institute.

“Additions could include the non-existent separation of church and state, the ‘right’ to abortion and euthanasia, and much, much more,” the group said.

The warning comes at a time when Barack Obama, who is to be voted the next president by the Electoral College Monday, has expressed his belief the U.S. Constitution needs to be interpreted through the lens of current events.

Tom DeWeese, who runs the center and its education and grassroots work, told WND the possibilities stunned him when he discovered lawmakers in Ohio are considering a call for a Constitutional Convention. He explained that 32 other states already have taken that vote, and only one more would be needed to require Congress to name convention delegates who then would have more power than Congress itself.

kat in your hat 12.10.08 at 11:26 am Jon the Fluffer should not only be fired for being a sexist moron and disrespecting the former first lady; NY senator; Presidential candidate, and now Secretary of State… He needs to be fired because he is irresponsible and reckless by allowing it to be captured on film. He should be viewed as a thorn in the O administration, someone who is so immature and clueless that the chances of him doing something stupid and embarrassing again are HIGH. Meanwhile, it devalues O’s *words*…those bs words people cried over and swooned over were Jon the Fluffer’s, and so–who can take O’s words seriously when he speaks about women’s rights (which is RARE to NEVER)…cause they will be the words of Jon the Fluffer–all BS. ====================== RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT!

Photoshop ideas, for posters etc: The original photo middlesized with a large white margin around, and speech ballons like in a cartoon coming from each person’s mouth. 138. Kathleen Parker’s article excerpts, and my comments indicated w/ $$$:

Only Hillary Clinton has made light of the “incident,” hereinafter known as Night of BBB (Boys Being Boys). In an e-mail to The Washington Post’s Al Kamen, a Clinton adviser wrote: “Senator Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon’s obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application.”

$$$ Clever. Makes them seem like children, and HRC rises above it. Let’s face it, if she complained, they (MSM, liberal bloggers, etc.) would say she has a thin skin, yadda yadda.

Hear, hear. Nipping nonsense in the bud is an essential skill for a secretary of state and Clinton used her shears deftly. If anyone recognizes a little harmless male sport, it would be the bride of President “Is.” One thing is harmful; another thing isn’t.

Nevertheless, Clinton’s response has fallen short of what some deem appropriate. CNN’s Campbell Brown charged Clinton with forfeiting her feminist cred, especially after issuing her own charges of sexism throughout the presidential campaign. Now that Clinton’s a member of the Obama team, she suddenly has a sense of humor?

$$$ So now Campbell Soup is siding with feminists? Before, she was putting them down. Can’t she ever get anything right. Campbell: “Honey, I’m home, I brought home pizza with your favorite topping, anchovies”. Hubby: “I’m allergic to anchovies”.

    (snip)
In the meantime, feminists might channel their free-ranging anger toward, say, Iran, where yet another woman recently was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery.

$$$ That’s right. Change the subject. Make a valid issue seem inconsequential. Maybe Bill Ayers should have said: “Sure, I planted some bombs, but compare that with a super nova with explosive force of one million suns”. So, thanks, Kathleen, for your perspective.

$$$ Imagine the outrage there’d be a Clinton administration if a cardboard cutout of Obama was put through some racially questionable “fun stuff”, guy wearing a white hooded robe, or a noose. The outrage would be vehement, with Big Media leading the charge: “Where is President-elect Clinton in this? Won’t this signify that she doesn’t have a tight grip of the people under her? Is she just outright a bad manager and bad judge of character?

  139. “CNN’s Campbell Brown charged Clinton with forfeiting her feminist cred”

    ———————————————————–

So now Hillary is damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. Brown went out of her way to attack and degrade Hillary during the primary. Going a step further, she also riduled any attempt at Hillary to fight back at the so-called “feminist” garbage the boys club kept throwing.

Campbell Brown’s show should be retitled: “All Bull, All Day!”
