“She possesses an extraordinary intelligence and toughness, and a remarkable work ethic,” Obama said in making it official. “She is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence, who knows many of the world’s leaders, who will command respect in every capital and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interests around the world.”

It is a shame not many can say this of 0bama and he is the President-elect (where she ought to have been).

H4T,

Let me say this on Condi Rice....Colin Powell himself said "he and Condi was the only sane one in the cabinet." "While he does admit that Condi was better at the politics and knew when to pull back, while he did not on his oppositition. In turn his pressure pushed GWB closer to the Cheney/Rumsfeld with Bolton his agent in his department.

I actually think Condi got a bad rap, she had to fight very hard for the power she now holds...it wasn't that way in the begining all she was was GWB close advisor, she had to build up her power base from nothing.

On Condi and her gracious and classy words regarding Hillary:

I fault her for not standing up to her boss more than she did, (and we may never know what efforts she did or did not make behind the scenes to reign in the maniacs) but her history is not one of being a wackjob far rightist, prior to being appointed SOS. Her history was of moderation and good sense. She has been horrible as SOS, but she is not stupid - she’s quite a brilliant woman. I have no idea her reasons for continuing as SOS for the Shrub, though it may well have been a sense of “doing more good from the inside”. Or maybe she was a coward, who knows? *shrug*

Condi and Hillary have actually been friends for years. Hill and Chelsea stayed in her home when Hill took Chelsea out to check out Stanford, as Condi was still teaching there at the time. They have great respect and affection for one another. Her words regarding Hill do not surprise me.

There is a rumor that it was this friendship that prompted Hillary to cast her AUMF vote as she did. They say Hill was worried, and went to Condi. Condi assured her privately, off the record, as a FRIEND, and gave her word that it was brandishing the stick only, that the inspectors would go back in first. I don’t know if that’s true. I also don’t know if Condi made that promise to Hill in good faith, and was herself lied to and kept out of the real plans by the Cheney faction. It’s entirely possible with those bastards.

After 26 days, Biden speaks

CHICAGO – Amid questions about his influence in the Obama transition and the potential for him to be overshadowed by Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, Vice President-elect Joe Biden spoke publicly on Monday for the first time since the election 26 days ago.

He stepped to the podium at the Chicago Hilton to congratulate Obama for bringing together “one of the most talented national security teams ever assembled.”

Biden, the animated former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was full of facial expressions, crossed arms, deep, pensive frowns and broad smiles during the nearly 45-minute long news conference.

Biden’s clout in the transition team – and more broadly within the constellation of Obama advisors — has been the subject of debate recently as the president-elect appears, publicly at least, to be consulting more with his longtime Chicago advisors than his running mate. Questions about Biden’s role in the administration, which has yet to be defined, were heightened as well when it became clear that Clinton, another strong personality, would be handling foreign policy.

Foreign affairs is Biden’s chief area of expertise and the main reason Obama selected him as his running mate.

In his remarks Monday, Biden praised Clinton and the others introduced as part of the national security team in-waiting.

Standing behind Obama and to the right of Clinton, Biden smiled broadly as Peter Baker of The New York Times asked the president-elect about his belittling of Clinton’s foreign qualifications during their primary battles, particularly his description of her international experiences as mostly attending teas.

In the speaking line-up, Biden batted clean-up. He stood, arms-crossed, as Clinton spoke. He laughed, grabbed Robert Gates’ arm and patted him on the back when a reporter asked if Gates qualified as Obama’s cabinet Republican, or if Americans should expect more GOP appointments. He nodded. He shifted on his feet. His eyes wandered around the room as if he couldn’t wait to speak.

When his turn came, Biden’s voice boomed in his signature loud-to-soft way during remarks that lasted three-and-a-half minutes, after the six other nominees had their says.

“The president elect has assembled a national security team that is poised, in my view, to recapture the totality of American strength,” Biden said. “Each member of his team shares the goals and principles that the president-elect and I have attempted to advance. Each member shares our conviction that strength and wisdom must go hand-in-hand. Each member believes as we do that American security is not a partisan issue — witness the team.”

“These are extraordinary times,” Biden continued. We face extra challenges. But I am, as the president-elect is, optimistic — absolutely optimistic that this team with the president-elect at its helm will see to it that America leads not only by the example of our power, but by the power of our example.”

He even paved the way for the next segment of the program.

“And now President-elect Obama is prepared to take your questions,” Biden said.
