McCain, Palin, Big Media, And Obama Race To November

Today, and at tomorrow night’s debate, Barack Obama will attack John McCain regarding the Keating 5 scandal. It will be a wholly appropriate attack. The attack will be appropriate because candidates during elections should bring issues of character and record to the voters.

Tomorrow when the Obama Keating 5 attack comes, John McCain should respond that yes, questioning a candidate’s associations are entirely proper and then John McCain should proceed to question Obama’s past and present associations.

Doubtless, Obama’s Keating 5 attack will be phrased dishonestly – it is simply not in Obama’s history to attack honestly. But in either case the attack will fail. The Obama Keating 5 attack will fail because Americans know John McCain.

The Obama Keating 5 attack will be Obama’s way of trying to silence the mentions of what we call Barack Obama’s Running Mates. Obama does not want his slimy running mates mentioned because Americans do not know who Barack Obama is and Barack Obama does not want the voters to find out who he really is.

Hillary Clinton tried a little to tell us how little we know about Obama and his running mates. For that Hillary and Bill Clinton were attacked as racists, among other charming epithets.

McCain has written and talked for decades about the Keating 5 scandal which is one of the reasons why the Obama Keating 5 attack will fail. At the time it was alleged that McCain chose his friends carelessly.

McCain-Palin spokesman Brian Rogers said: “The difference here is clear. John McCain has been open and honest about the Keating matter, and even the Democratic special counsel in charge recommended that Senator McCain be completely exonerated. By contrast, Barack Obama has been fundamentally dishonest about his friendship and work with the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, whose radical group bombed the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol. Nor has Barack Obama come clean on his close friendship with Tony Rezko, a felon convicted on bribery charges who subsidized the purchase of Barack Obama’s home. It’s obvious that Barack Obama is frantically attacking because he knows that most voters find these kinds of friendships, and the failed judgment they expose, to be unacceptable for our next president.” [snip]

In 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee cleared McCain of corruption charges but cited him for “poor judgment” in meeting with federal regulators on behalf of Charles H. Keating Jr., a political patron who went to prison for fraud in connection with the collapse of the California-based Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which at the time was one of the biggest financial failures in the nation’s history. The Keating episode took a searing toll on the senator and his wife, Cindy. Robert Timberg, in his 1999 biography “John McCain: An American Odyssey,” wrote that the trouble began with the senator “carelessly choosing his friends.”

If it is fair to bring up McCain’s shared history with Democratic Senator John Glenn as a member of the Keating 5, why is it unfair to bring up Barack Obama’s corrupt friends and convicted bombers? Anytime Obama’s history with corrupt friends or bombers is mentioned Obama calls it a smear, or racism, or anything to avoid discussing his decades long friendships.

Democrat Barack Obama counterattacked on Sunday against a new Republican tactic by saying rival John McCain was more interested in a smear campaign than fixing the U.S. economy. [snip]

“Senator McCain and his operatives are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance,” Obama said. “They’d rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up.”

“It’s what you do when you’re out of touch, out of ideas and running out of time,” he said a month before the November 4 election. [snip]

Then he poked fun at Palin’s folksy way of speaking by saying: “We’re not going to let John McCain distract us. We’re not going to let him hoodwink ya, and bamboozle ya, we’re not going to let him run the okie doke on ya.” [snip]

The Obama campaign released a new ad hitting McCain as erratic during the past two weeks of economic crisis, a reference that could be interpreted as subtle reminder of McCain’s age. The Arizona senator, age 72, would be the oldest person elected president for the first time.

Poking fun at how Palin speaks (we recall how Obama poked “fun” at Hillary “Annie Oakley” Clinton) and smearing McCain as too old or “out of touch” is typical for Obama.

Obama, who claims he is a foreign policy expert because he lived abroad when he was 6 years old, won’t explain his friendship with bomber Ayres because when Ayres went a-bombing Obama was 8 years old. However, Obama does not explain why Obama as an adult associated with unrepentant Ayres. It’s not about being 8 years old – its about being a grown adult running for office and associating with corrupt or dynamite jailbirds – like Rezko and Ayres, respectively.

Ayres is white, but this past weekend the Associated Press charged that mentioning Ayres, who is white, carried a racially tinged subtext . Get that? Talking about a white guy is “racially tinged”. Karen Tumulty recently published an equally irrational “race card” article because of a McCain advertisement featuring African-American Franklin Raines. So, if you talk about a white guy or a black guy who associates with Barack Obama it is racism or at least racially tinged. Big Media is circling the wagons to protect Obama.

When we wrote “Stinky Politics” in September 2007 we asked the question Want to know how ‘stinky’ the 2008 presidential race is going to get? We discussed a top Obama campaign operative Robert Gibbs. In 2003 Gibbs was responsible for an advertisement that morphed the face of Osama Bin Laden with the face of then frontrunner Howard Dean.

We noted in Stinky Politics that Howard Dean had a long history of public service, especially in comparison to Barack Obama. Still, Howard Dean was attacked for a lack of experience all the while having his face morphed into Osama’s face.

It would be interesting for the John McCain campaign to issue a frame-by-frame duplicate of the Gibbs ad. It certainly would be fitting.

No doubt, the Obama lack of experience would be ignored by the Obama campaign (in the same way Joe Biden ignored Governor Palin’s accurate charge that Joe Biden himself has said Obama lacks sufficient experience to be president) but Obama would immediately shout “racism” if a Gibbs ad remake morphed Obama’s face with Osama’s face.

John McCain’s campaign says it is going to fight. John McCain’s campaign better prepare to be called racists.

I only saw part I on this site so far. Lot’s of info on part I was new to me, considering I was so involved in this election.     As far as Keating goes, if this is all the Obamadroits could dig up, then they must be desperate. I’m sure McCain and the Repubs will nip this garbage in the bud. At the very least, McCain’s lack of judgement is extremely minor to all the crimes building up against the wannabe messiah!

    You are going to find many more gov’t-Goldman Sachs connections at all levels of public service than almost any other single organization in the world, except for former military and university faculty-staff on sabbatical.

    Part of G-S’ culture is a company wide encouragement to serve the public…jobs are kept open for the employee, and many serve several stints during their tenure at G-S. The doors swing the other way too…many gov’t retirees are recruited by G-S because they were admired for their talent by G-S cohorts during their public service stints.

    Rubin and Paulson are the only 2 I can think of off the cuff, but there are many, many at mid-level positions as well.

  13. Keating was an Arizona man who, before his savings and loan tanked, posed as a good guy. He spent a lot of money on some ‘good works’ foundation — to improve schools or GOTV or register the poor. When these meetings were held, Sen Alan Cranston attended (Lincoln S&L was in CA too), the Sen from MI who chaired a relevant committee, one other, and the two Sens from Arizona. Only McC was a Republican.

    Nobody did anything that untoward. But they were seeing if they could help out a contributor who was in trouble. It was the fury of customers (mainly seniors) who made deposits that were not Federally backed and then lost most of it that propelled these hearings. The public felt that the senators’ backing compounded the problem or at least extended it. They wanted the senators to have exposed Keating and perhaps have saved some of the deposits.

    McCain and Cranston seemed to have just agreed to attend a meeting without checking into all the facts first. Bad judgment but McCain learned a valuable lesson. He was mortified that he had been used and had let his constituents down. I doubt that he would ever do it again since his honor is clearly important to him.

    Obama, on the other hand, doesn’t admit, explain, or show remorse at anything.

    Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday is launching a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

    Pushing back against what it calls McCain’s “guilt-by-association” tactics, the Obama campaign overnight began e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, which will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

    The only problem is that Team Obama registered “KeatingEconomics.com” on September 25, days before Gov. Palin’s truthful statement about Senator Obama’s association with terrorist Bill Ayers. This indicates that Obama was going to use “guilt-by-association tactics,” no matter what Team McCain did.

    moon, right after 9/11 the stock market drop 2000 points and hit bottomed around 7500… a sell off is not necessarily bad but the concern is the availability of credit.

    The financial implications are that many will lose money. given the reckless behavior of wall street and the lack of oversight it’s no wonder.

    I live within my means, but I still feel the crunch. I have faith this will be corrected even though many will suffer.

  29. Jan, because they built the economy on debt, they turned the economyfrom one strong on savings to one strong on credit and the bill has never been paid, 20 years ago, the majority of people rented properties, because we were taught to save up and buy, now its, buy and never save up.

    They went from Savings Good, Credit Bad, to Credit Good, Savings bad.

    Now foreign banks and Govts own the US economy and we let them do it.

    Maybe we need to go back to a time of American products, american workers producing and screw foreign goods. Looking at the way its going, we may have no option.

    I had this vision in my head this morning when remembering with such disgust the creepy video of adults pimping small children out to sing for nObama. What if someone, say a 527, had children singing the ABC’s and with each letter hitting the faults and bad associations of nObama. Something like: [children] I can sing my ABC’s. A [adult] Alinsky, Ayers, Auchi,anit-patriotic; [children] B [Berszenki?, etc etc]………and so on.
    There are talented people here and on blogs that could make this happen and we could make it go viral……….good idea?

  39. We shouldn’t be so concerned about who people know….it’s not so much guilt by association….it’s the sharing of views that’s revealing.

    Obama never gets this right. It isn’t whether or not Hillary knows corporate heads or lobbyists, but what she does or doesn’t think or do. It isn’t whether McCain knew an important Savings & Loan magnate in his state, but what he did or didn’t do. He certainly doesn’t and didn’t approve of looting or fraud, or aiding it.

    Obama didn’t just know Wright and Ayers. He bought into their “black liberation” stuff, their socialist (communist) views, their “white oppression and racism” ideas. He still does. Why else would every criticism be racist? Why else would he promise the unions that they would bar employees from a secret vote on unionization?

    To stem this recession, are we going to have confiscatory taxes? Redistribution of wealth?
    Will that work? Do we want it? No wonder he wants to grab all the guns.

    If Barack Obama is so outraged at John McCain’s involvement in the Keating Five scandal, why is John Glenn, another Keating Five member, doing surrogate work for Obama?

    Obama’s presidential campaign released a scathing documentary on Monday detailing McCain’s ties to the Savings and Loan crisis on the 1980’s. Five U.S. senators were named in the scandal: Sen. Alan Cranston (D.-Calif.), Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D.-Ariz.), Sen. John Glenn (D.-Ohio), Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.) and Sen. Donald Reigle (D-Minn.).

    “The Keating scandal is eerily similar to today’s credit crisis, where a lack of regulation and cozy relationships between the financial industry and Congress has allowed banks to make risky loans and profit by bending the rules,” reads a trailer for the video on a website created by the Obama campaign to attack McCain, http://www.keatingeconomics.com. “And in both cases, John McCain’s judgment and values have placed him on the wrong side of history.

    But Obama doesn’t seem to have any quarrel with Glenn. The former Democratic Ohio senator introduced Bruce Springsteen at a benefit concert for Obama in Ohio on Sunday, October 5. He’s also done other surrogate work for Obama as well. According to Obama’s presidential website Glenn held a conference calls with reporters for Obama in August.

    A day after Glenn urged people to register to vote for Obama in Ohio, Obama’s campaign began a multimedia campaign to remind the public McCain was one of the “Keating Five” although he was eventually cleared of all charges.

    Like McCain, Glenn was also found not guilty of violating any Senate rules.

    Attorney John Dowd, who represented McCain during the Senate Ethics investigation, said Senate Democrats conducted a “classic political smear job” on McCain in the Keating Five scandal.

    “When it was discovered Keating was pushing too hard, he [McCain] threw Keating out of his office and ended all relations with him,” Dowd said.

    This actually concerns me greatly. Not that wealthy people shouldn’t pay their fair share but the Robin Hood mentality.

    Tax policy should be fair, and I do embrace a flat tax.

    Although this may sound simplistic, but the way I see it if we were’nt giving so much of our tax dollars to government, many of the social problems we face would not exist. Our tax dollars would not be needed to fund the enormous number of programs that are now on the recieving end.

    Our goverment has taken on the role of papa to way to many issues. Science ,health, national security and education should be are primary focus…but instead we care about wooden arrows and Puerto Rican Rum

  49. I got this informal email this morning from my daughter who is a wonderful Math teacher:

    I do believe this is very true. I don’t think those same children were offered a chance to make a music video for both McCain and nObama ? That is awful trying to brainwash our children and we are PAYING taxes supporting the crap. I don’t think any teacher should even indicate who she/he supports in elections. I think debate between students is good when they have studied platforms/etc. I have a friend that teaches history in TN and he said he had students get in groups depending on which “platform” they believed in… like pro-choice, social programs, blah blah.. and he put them in different sections of the room depending on their beliefs. The platforms had NO names of candidates so they didn’t all know what each candidate believes. Then he had them go to different sections of the room based on whether they’d choose Romney, McCain, Hillary, Obama…etc. And MOST of his students did NOT go to the sections of their candidates beliefs. In other words, the students would “vote” for the person’s name when they actually in reality DISAGREED with their platform. But, I think most Americans like most students… do NOT really know what their candidate stands for or what their record is… they just vote for whoever they “like” or who they think looks more “presidential” “hip”… blah blah. It is really STUPID. I think people should have to pass history tests in order to vote. I think they should have a valid social sec number, be alive, have a residence where they are voting, and be SANE.
    I am really worried about this election. But, I do recall that the polls usually put the Democratic Candidate ahead before an election. So, maybe the polls will be proven to be incorrect!
    As far as bumper stickers, etc.. [my husband who works in a school system as well] got harassed before because he didn’t have a Democratic bumper sticker on his truck at work. He was told he should take his Bush sticker OFF or he would tick people off that are over him at work. I called the guy (I had dated him a couple of times and was friends with him before I married) and told him that he needed to quit harassing employees. But, I also have experienced that. If you have a MCCAIN PALIN sticker on your car, you will be considered RACIST. Well, the thought crossed my mind that those with OBAMA shirts /etc must also be RACIST.

    Jan- I know the question is rhetorical, but as long as you teed it up fro me let me take a swing at it. The answer to your question can be expressed in terms of a simple equation as follows:

    ACORN + Wall Street Greed + Fanny Mae Cover Up + Congressional Misfeasance + Corrupt Media = Worst Financial Disaster Since 1929 + Messiah= Shock Doctrine Risk

    Granted complex but to me at least this equation identifies the critical factors. Furthermore, it shows how Obama is connected to this crisis and why it is madness to expect him to solve it. Here is the proof:

    1. ACORN: is a radical organization that was directly and indirectly responsible for the intimidation of bankers which caused them to make large numbers of improvident loans to ineligible homebuyers, and pass that risk off to the Federal Government (Fanny Mae + Freddie Mac–or fanny mac and freddy mae per Bambi).
    (N.B.> ACORN is the orgainiztion that helped spawn Obama). Greed was also a factor.

    2. Wall Street Greed: all the bundling, the speculation, and the profit taking. Now the demand that taxpayers bail them out for their notorious schemes. (N.B. Barack Obama is Wall Steets Man. Last time I checked he received four times the amount of contributions from them that Hillary or McCain did. Obamas mentor Soros was a big time speculator in mortagages a few months ago and I would be surprised if he did not profit handsomely from short selling–that is his mo.)

    3. Fanny Mae cover-up: when it Raines it pours. Pours millions of taxpayer severance dollars into the bank account of former Fannie Mae executive now Obama advisor Franklin Raines. Pours billions of dollars of bad debt liablitity into the pockets of ordinary Americans.

    4. Congressional Inaction: as noted, Enron was a Republican probem, but the dimocrats who supported Obama over Hillary own this one lock, stock and barrel. When Hillary, McCain and Secretary Snowe foresaw the megapoliitcal disaster on the horizon they proposed proactive steps to deal with it. They were thwarted by Wall Street darling Pelosi, Countrywide whore Dodd, and obviously others. True to form, Senator Obama took no action. Was this malfeasance or misfeasance? You decide. (N.B. these so-called public servants led the support of Obama against Hillary before and after she tried to preempt this disaster).

    5. Corrupt Media: res ipsa locitur (the thing speaks for itself). This subject has been treated elsewhere and no one who has eyes to see and ears to hear can claim ignorance of the problem. They ignore a problem until it becomes a problem and then they fan the flames of panic to favor their own agenda. When the stop telling two sides to a story they become a totalitarian tool. (N.B. in this case, they have promoted the false narrative that the mortgage crisis favors democrats but if they told the truth people would realize that the dimocrats who support Obama and their allies are primarily responsible for it and the thousands of misfortunes that follow.)

    6. Worst Finacial Disaster: lets hope not. Lets hope this is all media hype, that the seven hundred billion dollar bailout will stabilize markets. However, it is noteworthy that the Europeans are now choking on it. What haunts me is the statement by the former Japanese foreign minister who presided over their 15 year recession when their housing bubble et al broke. Once you clear this mountain and look ahead as far as the eye can see is the Himilayas. Let us hope that is an overly pessimistic assessment. (N.B.> Barack Obama and his associates and congressional supporters bear responsiblity here.)

    7. Shock Doctrine. If he becomes President he will assume extra constitutional authorities to deal with this problem, play the race card with impunity, and silence his enemies just as he has done in the democatic party. Not alot of dissent out there now is there. They apparently support his truth squads in Missouri, etc. That is the risk.

    The tragedy of this is as ABM 90 says: we could have had Hillary Rodham Clinton–the greatest leader and the best American of out time. The only thing that prevented it was Big Media, the machinations of the far left and the corruption of the DNC and traitors in congress like Pelosi, Clyburn, Dodd, Kennedy, et. al. I worry deeply for our country if this manchurian candidate gets into office. The American People have got less than thirty days to figure it out.

And all the reporting this year was that this year, the dynamic has changed, that left-leaning orgs are outspending the right-leaning counterparts. MoveOn, and a host of other groups, including those funded by billionairs like George Soros, have been more than willing to “say anything” to get Obama past the American voters.

    Dozens of homes in a mostly white town in northern New Jersey received fliers deriding black people and depicting Mr. Obama as Osama bin Laden. Communities of mainly white Michigan auto workers have been subjected to hundreds of cable television ads linking Mr. Obama to Kwame Kilpatrick, Detroit’s discredited former mayor, and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., now infamous for his sermons damning America. Mr. Kilpatrick was never an ally of the senator and Mr. Obama has broken with Mr. Wright and rejected his racist rhetoric.

    $$$ Obama only parted ways w/ the good Reverend after it became white-hot. Otherwise, they’d still be best of pals. But that truth, and fuller context, would undermine the cover that the Times is trying to provide Obama.

    Senator John McCain has also been targeted by a liberal group suggesting that his years in a prison camp have made him unfit to serve as president.

    So far this year, the attacks have been more pinpointed and less sweeping than the low-blow Swift Boat ads of 2004. But we fear these slurs are the harbinger of a more offensive and widespread onslaught to come. It’s ominous that one anti-Obama producer — notorious for the racist Willie Horton attack ads on Gov. Michael Dukakis 20 years ago — is planning a campaign falsely “revealing” Mr. Obama as a Muslim.

    The best way to assure that free speech is not despoiled by hate mongering would be for the campaigns to make a routine, unsensational point of denouncing the ads and their creators for what they are — the product of a radical fringe that has little regard for rational debate.

    Blaming Deregulation

    The financial turmoil has pushed the Obama campaign into the lead, and this is mostly justified. Barack Obama is more thoughtful on the economy than his opponent, and his bench of advisers is superior. But there’s a troubling side to the Democratic advance. The claim that the financial crisis reflects Bush-McCain deregulation is not only nonsense. It is the sort of nonsense that could matter.

    The real roots of the crisis lie in a flawed response to China. Starting in the 1990s, the flood of cheap products from China kept global inflation low, allowing central banks to operate relatively loose monetary policies. But the flip side of China’s export surplus was that China had a capital surplus, too. Chinese savings sloshed into asset markets ’round the world, driving up the price of everything from Florida condos to Latin American stocks.

    That gave central bankers a choice: Should they carry on targeting regular consumer inflation, which Chinese exports had pushed down, or should they restrain asset inflation, which Chinese savings had pushed upward? Alan Greenspan’s Fed chose to stand aside as asset prices rose; it preferred to deal with bubbles after they popped by cutting interest rates rather than by preventing those bubbles from inflating. After the dot-com bubble, this clean-up-later policy worked fine. With the real estate bubble, it has proved disastrous.

    So the first cause of the crisis lies with the Fed, not with deregulation. If too much money was lent and borrowed, it was because Chinese savings made capital cheap and the Fed was not aggressive enough in hiking interest rates to counteract that. Moreover, the Fed’s track record of cutting interest rates to clear up previous bubbles had created a seductive one-way bet. Financial engineers built huge mountains of debt partly because they expected to profit in good times — and then be rescued by the Fed when they got into trouble.

    Of course, the financiers did create those piles of debt, and they certainly deserve some blame for today’s crisis. But was the financiers’ miscalculation caused by deregulation? Not really.

    The key financiers in this game were not the mortgage lenders, the ratings agencies or the investment banks that created those now infamous mortgage securities. In different ways, these players were all peddling financial snake oil, but as Columbia University’s Charles Calomiris observes, there will always be snake-oil salesmen. Rather, the key financiers were the ones who bought the toxic mortgage products. If they hadn’t been willing to buy snake oil, nobody would have been peddling it.

    Who were the purchasers? They were by no means unregulated. U.S. investment banks, regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, bought piles of toxic waste. U.S. commercial banks, regulated by several agencies, including the Fed, also devoured large quantities. European banks, which faced a different and supposedly more up-to-date supervisory scheme, turn out to have been just as rash. By contrast, lightly regulated hedge funds resisted buying toxic waste for the most part — though they are now vulnerable to the broader credit crunch because they operate with borrowed money.

    If that doesn’t convince you that deregulation is the wrong scapegoat, consider this: The appetite for toxic mortgages was fueled by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the super-regulated housing finance companies. Calomiris calculates that Fannie and Freddie bought more than a third of the $3 trillion in junk mortgages created during the bubble and that they did so because heavy government oversight obliged them to push money toward marginal home purchasers. There’s a vigorous argument about whether Calomiris’s number is too high. But everyone concedes that Fannie and Freddie poured fuel on the fire to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.

    So blaming deregulation for the financial mess is misguided. But it is dangerous, too, because one of the big challenges for the next president will be to defend markets against the inevitable backlash that follows this crisis. Even before finance went haywire, the Doha trade negotiations had collapsed; wage stagnation for middle-class Americans had raised legitimate questions about whom the market system served; and the food-price spike had driven many emerging economies to give up on global agricultural markets as a source of food security. Coming on top of all these challenges, the financial turmoil is bound to intensify skepticism about markets. Framing the mess as the product of deregulation will make the backlash nastier.

    The next president will have to make some subtle choices. In certain areas, markets need to be reformed — by pushing murky “over-the-counter” trades between banks onto transparent exchanges, for example. In other areas, government needs to fix itself — by not subsidizing reckless mortgage lending. But a president who has a mandate only to reregulate will be a boxer with a missing glove. By going along with the market skepticism of his party, Obama may end up winning an election while compromising his presidency.

    A middle school teacher in Missouri was suspended Monday for putting a video on YouTube of his students chanting lines from Barack Obama speeches and wearing military fatigues.

    The video, called “Obama Youth — Junior Fraternity Regiment,” was posted by a YouTube user named “keepitwildtv” on Oct. 2. The school learned the video was on the Internet and took action against the teacher Monday morning.

    Joyce McGautha, superintendent of the Urban Community Leadership Academy, a charter school for students in fifth through ninth grades in Kansas City, Mo., said that the video was probably taken last May during the Junior Fraternity’s morning meeting at the school.

    She would not disclose the teacher’s name. “At this time because of the legal action that we’ll probably have to take against the teacher, I’m not going to give his name,” McGautha said.

    Students at the school have 30-minute group sessions four times a week during which they are supposed to work on reading and writing. Once a week they are allowed to have “activities,” McGautha said. There are 12 groups at the public charter school.

    The Junior Fraternity students studied Obama’s economic plan with the teacher, and the superintendent did not know whether the teacher or the students scripted the routine. The group should have also studied John McCain’s economic plan, the superintendent said.

    In the video, eighth- and ninth-graders wearing military camouflage pants and navy t-shirts chant and perform a routine in the style of a step show, a dance popular among African-American fraternities at universities.

    Senator Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed. But the truth is I was the one who called at the time for tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could have helped prevent this crisis from happening in the first place.

    Senator Obama was silent on the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his Democratic allies in Congress opposed every effort to rein them in. As recently as September of last year he said that subprime loans had been, quote, “a good idea.” Well, Senator Obama, that “good idea” has now plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

    To hear him talk now, you’d think he’d always opposed the dangerous practices at these institutions. But there is absolutely nothing in his record to suggest he did. He was surely familiar with the people who were creating this problem. The executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have advised him, and he has taken their money for his campaign. He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them. Did he ever talk to the executives at Fannie and Freddie about these reckless loans? Did he ever discuss with them the stronger oversight I proposed? If Senator Obama is such a champion of financial regulation, why didn’t he support these regulations that could have prevented this crisis in the first place? He won’t tell you, but you deserve an answer.

    Ohio? Most of the recent polls, if we can believe them (??!!), have Obama up like everywhere; OH, PA, even FL, even MI, NM, CO.

    It has gotten to the point where it does not seem logical at all. If McCain was slowly steadily catching up with Obama since June, and the Georgia/Russia situation coupled with excitement about Palin propelled him into the lead, it seems silly that vague “economic anxiety” would suddenly result in a 10 point shift.

    During this time, McCain more than held his own in the debate, while Obama got credit for being better than his terrible early performances, although he still has to work on that condescending attitude, and the rude talking over his opponent tic.

    Sure, the generic Dem benefits from economic concerns, and Bill Clinton worked that issue expertly. Hillary was doing that too. And if HRC was running now, I’d understand that her expertise would trump McCain’s. But Obama is up to his eyeballs in associates with ties to banking and finance industries, just as much as anyone in DC. And yet he is barely anyone’s idea of a fiscal policy wonk.

    So the polls must be worth sh*t. Remember Obama polling better than Hillary on Super Tuesday in CA…until she won by 10 points.

    The same day Sarah Palin told Katie Couric that “science should be taught in science class,” a group of scientists were making that very point to the Texas Board of Education. Is Sarah Palin a closet evolutionist?

    Hardly, but it’s difficult to peg her as the sort of strict Creationist many academics and people of faith accuse of trying to undermine the teaching of evolution. Like many people of faith, Palin seems to believe that science and religion are not necessarily incompatible and that a good education should make room for both.

    Easier said than done, of course.

    The Texas scientists are battling an effort to require public schools to make room for both by teaching the “weaknesses of evolution.” That, according to the scientists, is a back-door attempt, under the guise of “academic freedom,” to require schools to teach Creationism and Intelligent Design in science classes.

    “Calling ‘Intelligent Design’ arguments a weakness of evolution is like calling alchemy a weakness of chemistry, or astrology a weakness of astronomy,” Sahotra Sarkar, a University of Texas biology professor, told the Texas Board of Education Tuesday.

    Similar “back-door” attempts are being made in several states. In June, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a law that allows teachers to introduce “supplemental textbooks and other instructional materials” about evolution. But other states are putting more emphasis on teaching evolution as “the organizing principle of life science,” as the Florida Department of Education ruled earlier this year.

    “Principle” is the word Kouric and Palin both used in their conversation broadcast Tuesday. Kouric asked: “Do you believe evolution should be taught as an accepted scientific principle or as one of several theories?”

    Palin responsed: “Oh, I think it should be taught as an accepted principle. And, as you know, I say that also as the daughter of a school teacher, a science teacher, who has really instilled in me a respect for science. It should be taught in our schools. And I won’t deny that I see the hand of God in this beautiful creation that is Earth. But that is not part of the state policy or a local curriculum in a school district. Science should be taught in science class.”

    That seems fairly clear. Evolution should be taught as a principle of science, not as a theory alongside others such as Creationism. This is a woman who has said that her father, a public school science teacher, did not teach Creationism in class. She hasn’t pushed the issue as governor.

    But Palin clearly believes Creationism should be a part of the classroom discussion. When Palin was running for governor in 2006, she was asked during a televised debate if she thought teaching creationism in public schools was good for students. “I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum,” she said.

    In a subsequent interview with the Anchorage Daily News, Palin said discussion of alternative views on the origins of life should be allowed in Alaska classrooms. “I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum,” she said.

    It shouldn’t be part of her father’s science class curriculum anymore than evolution should be part of her own child’s Sunday school lessons. For many people of faith, the question isn’t whether science and religion can comfortably coexist, but how.

    The best suggestion I’ve read can be found in “An Open Letter Concerning Religion and Science from American Christian Clergy,” signed so far by more than 11,000 clergy across the country.

    “We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist,” the letter reads in part. “We urge school board members to preserve the integrity of the science curriculum by affirming the teaching of the theory of evolution as a core component of human knowledge. We ask that science remain science and that religion remain religion, two very different, but complementary, forms of truth.”

    Does that seem so difficult?

    Putting money not only in high risk markets but into blue chips, bonds, metals, etc would have been the best bet even in a down turn. A financial planner who had their clients best interest at heart could have helped most of these people.

    I’m a inactive financial rep., I never would recommend throwing “all” your money into a 401k or company pension fund. Diversify if you have any money, but be careful of “early withdrawal penalties” if you plan on moving money around.

    A choreographed chant by a group of students at the Kansas City charter school Urban Community Leadership Academy has people talking ever since it showed up on the internet.

    I also read about people who were investigating this crime and just before they were scheduled to testify before congress they ended up dead.

    Polls refusing to identify party break down, so they may as well just make it up and they probably do.

    In Ohio, Susa did the sample in the their polls, in the 3 out of areas, Cinn, Toledo and Columbus that McCain is winning by a mile in Ohio totalled to 40% of the state sample, the area they tied in was Dayton 11% of the state sample and the one out of 5 areas Bambi was winning in largely by 60/40 was 44% of the state sample. They deliberately oversampled Obama’s winning area.

This is CRUCIAL to understanding this poll because in VA, 39% of the voters are registered Repubs and 35% are registered Dems. Now compare this to this morning’s Survey USA poll, which sampled 39% Dems and 30% Repubs!!! This is outrageously inaccurate.

    And that is why, despite the polls, McCain will win.

    That is very true. I think if people think BO will win they will stay home too. The thing that gets me is how many democrats will be voting for McCain this year. I think it is many many more than any one thinks it will be. I live in Florida, and this Barack doesn’t support the black community thing (where he is refusing to advertise with African American owned media) is going to hurt him. They are saying how can he expect them to vote for him if he is sending campaign ad dollars to every media outlet except those owned by African Americans.     I heard on fox news that Ohio Repubs have a very organized effort out there and do every year. They claim that is how they won in 2004.     I remember going back to the sorority house and talking to my best girlfriend and telling her what had happened. But there were no words yet to describe it. There was no term “date rape” yet in our political vocabulary. The notion of a psychological rape was not on the table.

    I was a mess and felt it was my fault for letting it happen. I was ashamed. Back home at the end of the semester, I got my parents to send me to a psychiatrist. What had happened affected my ability to trust in a relationship with a man and I didn’t have a close relationship again for a long time.

    CHICAGO (AP) — Federal prosecutors have asked to delay the sentencing of convicted fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko indefinitely.

    The motion filed Monday afternoon signals the key fundraiser for Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Sen. Barack Obama and other Illinois Domocrats may be telling prosecutors what he knows about corruption in state government.

    Since these prosecutors are republicans I read it that way.

    I had a case many years ago where I tried to get an assistant U.S. attorney to move against a prominent union official who was involved in a contract assault and I could not get him to move. I had the perpetrator of the assault prepared to testify. The union official and the US attorney were from the same party. That is why I say it is critical that in this case the US attorney is from the other party. This strikes me as an important development.

    So according to CBS the country is 38% Dem, 28% Republican and 33% independent. A 10% oversample of Dems and 5% oversample of repubs of indies. They gotta be kidding me.

    So in reality, McCain is winning by a mile if he’s only 3% down with a 10% to 15% oversample of dems and indies. No wonder Rassmussen and Gallup are not releasing their internal datas.

    The Examiner is no longer the paper of William Randolph Hearst, That Examiner merged with the SF Chronicle (affectionately known as the comical). The new Examiner is an independent newspaper privately funded. It clearly divides news from editorial content and its editorial content is generally better the Chronicle.

    The Chronicle, as are most mainstream newspapers, downsizing, and the editorial staff is shrinking. Except for a couple of commentators, both left and right, most of the editorial content of the Chronicle lacks depth. The Examiner on the other hand publishes a broad spectrum of syndicated columnist from both sides, and provides a daily nice contrast of competing opinion.

    The editor at large of the Examiner has libertarian leanings. One nice touch, the editorial page gives daily prominence to a quote of the 1st Amendment.

    That is yet another reason why it is so critical for McCain to win. The Democratic House and Senate by their own admission can work with McCain. The reverse is not true. In my opinion, if sleeper cell obama prevails the American People will accept him–about as well as we do here on this site–which is to say not at all. Nor do I expect the republican party to roll over if he wins. They will sweep congress in the midterm elections. Alot of people will obamaize their financia portfolios–they are starting to do it already. The most likely scenario is disunity at the worst possible time–thanks to Kenney, Dean, Pelosi, Clyburn. Those who think the party can be reformed within will find how difficult that is to do. Like that wonderful Texas law officer says–defend freedom–defeat obama.     I am not a lawyer but I fear there is not much time for this to hurt Obama — in that sense may be the sentencing spectacle could have hurt him more. If he wins, I am afraid people will suppress it unless Republicans make a point of going after Obama. If he loses, who cares what happens to Obama?

This is what sometimes happens when you rely on second or third hand information. I had best not hazard a guess on what the judge is up to. I do not know him. Highlight what deplorable conditions there were and are – and then hit him hard with the TRUST issue and talk about EVERY negative thing that nObama has done/said and his radical and evil associations – then ask at the end TRUST – can the American voters risk putting our nation in his hands during this dark time for our economy. Then tell of a plan to get us out of the crisis over time that McCain/Palin would initiate.

  257. ABM 90: we have all been wrestling with that question. I have decided that I cannot accept the new coalition or its tactics. Given that fact, should I work within the party to change it back to what it used to be or should I attempt to do so from the outside.

    This is what I was alluding to yesterday when I compared Erasmus with Luther. Both men were members of the Catholic Church, both knew it needed to change, one tried to change it from within and failed, the other tried to change it from the outside and succeeded.

    If you have ever been through a buyout and merger, you quickly discover that the single factor that determines your future is not how good you are in your job but whose team you are on. In other words, were you a member of the acquiring company or the company that was acquired. That will determine your future.

    In a union situation, it is rare that the winning candidate allows his opponent to stay on and share power with him. The norm is for him to eliminate that opponent and extract revenge on his supporters. This is organizational behavior 101 and it is as I say the norm.

    In this situation the problem is compounded by the fact that the media and elites have bestowed on bambi all their support. He is an egomanical person to begin with and these tendencies are exascerbated by power. He and his wife hate Bill and Hillary and are threatened by him. He has Ilsa Koch types like McCaskill who will blindly do his bidding. Internal reform efforts will be quashed.

    You could argue that if he wins he will fail and will not run for a second term. But the more likely possibliltiy is tha he and his big media allies will find scapegoats other than him. If he does not run again he will designate his successor. Bad leadership is thus not cured but perpetuated.

    For these reasons, I doubt that reform can be orchestrated within the party. It will wither and die in my opinion, and the party will become over time the mirror image of him. That is not good.

    This has led many of us to conclude that party unity under these circumstances is an act of surrender which will prop up an evil regime. Better for loyal democats to do what Luther did and change the party from the outside. If he is defeated in November the task becomes easier.

    The relevant question for anyone struggling with the question you and I are is this: do you support the coup that has taken place and the rise of the new coaliton. We must look beyond form, i.e. party label and focus on substance, i.e. the new coaliton and its anti-democratic tactics in deciding whether unity is possible.

    Everyone must answer that question for themselves. To me the answer is, has always been no way, no how, no bama. Thus if he is hte nominee then party unity is impossible.

They generally don’t have anything negative to say about his character. I hear no such thing about Obama.     Why are the Clintons constantly getting a pass for stumping for Obama. Bill himself said Hillary has done over and beyond what any normal second place winner in a primary has done.     I am 100% committed to Hillary and the country. To me they are one and the same. I do not watch her right now but will be back in the fold when the time comes.

    As to the Hillary thing, this is how I see it. If he loses which I pray he does it becomes the Clinton’s party again. He needs to lose and lose big so that a clear message is sent, then she can spend the next 4 years saying I told you so and position herself to run in 2012. Her and Bill will be back to being the most powerful people in the democrat party. If he wins then its over for her. But she can’t be perceived as causing him to lose, or the message that needs to be sent, that Americans aren’t going to accept someone so radical as she has been saying, isn’t going be conveyed. If she is seen as the reason he loses then she doesn’t get back what she wants most, positioned at the top of the party and a chance at the presidency. So she is playing along. But she isn’t stepping on toes, on either side really, on the way.

    The problem that I have with your statement (and this is certainly just my opinion), is that why stump so over the top for a person if only she was going to say I told you so? She is also telling her supporters to vote for Obama. Where is the “I told you so”?

    Personally, I think that it just an excuse to say that she will be perceived as causing Obama to lose if he loses. He was supposed to be the great uniter, not Hillary. Obama is the cause of his own downfall. How do we know that she may know think that Obama is better for the country than McCain?

    I really don’t believe that they were ever at the top of their party. I think that the public may have thought so, be inside the democratic party they couldn’t stand the Clintons. So internally, I don’t think that they were at the top or she would have been the nominee now and/or they would have defended her as passionately as they have defended Obama. They want to get rid of the Clintons. That’s reality.

    Another thought is who is saying that she will actually run in 2012? Has she indicated that herself? The democrats know how to successfully defeat a Clinton now and will treat her no better than better. They will be the ones saying “I Told You So”!

    1988: Democrats = 3+ party ID advantage (38 Dem, 35 GOP, 27 Independent)

    1992: Democrats = 3+ party ID advantage (38 Dem, 35 GOP, 27 Independent)

    1996: Democrats = 4+ party ID advantage (39 Dem, 35 GOP, 26 Independent)

    2000: Democrats = 4+ party ID advantage (39 Dem, 35 GOP, 26 Independent)

    2004: TIED (37 Dem, 37 GOP, 26 Independent)

    2006: Democrats = 3+ party ID advantage (38 Dem, 35 GOP, 27 Independent)

    At the MOST, there has only been a 4+ Democratic party ID advantage in the electorate. The polls that show SoetorObama ahead of McCain have Democrats with a 7, 8, or even 9 point party ID advantage. That’s not historically or factually accurate. What this means is the polls are using more Democrats in the sample pools than they should be (which means the results of the polls will not match actual voter behavior on election day).

    Well my thoughts on this is back when she was trying to get the super delegates to pick her, and she told them that he is unelectable, remember that? And someone from the campaign said you can’t win an election with the black vote and egg heads. You need the blue collar working class. Remember that? So my thought is (and this is only my thought) that if he loses she can come back to all those who deserted her (the supers) and say, see, I told you he wasn’t electable. I told you he was the wrong candidate. If you had picked me I could have won this. If she doesn’t stump for him than she will get blamed for him losing. And she hasn’t really attacked McCain or Sarah Palin. She also may have made a deal about paying off some of that campaign debt. But that is what I am thinking.     WHAT are we doing?
    Taking approx. 30 people to small HRC-lovin’ towns across Ohio to talk to people and hand-out Nobama flyers
    WHEN:
    Thursday, October 16th.
    Participants will congregate in Columbus, OH—-
    October 17th:
    Bus will leave promptly at 8:30 am Friday, morning
    October 17-19
    We will stop all along the way (Marilu will give the travel itinerary tonight) and talk to people and pass out flyers.
    We will travel throughout Ohio, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (we will return to Columbus by 5 pm)
    We will stay overnight at motels in target destinations and share rooms to control costs.

    We need to raise $2000 for gas for the bus, a few hundred for a sign and as much money as we can for flyers
    Anyone that has info on people willing to donate the sign or flyers—please reach out to them.

    If we can raise the money, we hope to go through Pennsylvania the following weekend (October 24th)—
    and Virginia the weekend after that (October 31st).
    If we can swing it, it would be great to go wherever McCain needs the most help Nov. 3-4th
    People who can’t participate– can contribute directly on our website.

    REMEMBER: DON’T believe the polls.
    Obama wants everyone to think he is the “inevitable” winner—BUT At this time in 2000 and 2004– Gore was up 18 points and Kerry was up 15 (thanks, Thelma)

  374. I just logged on to 44 using my laptop with no problem. the site is functioning fine, it seens if you’re not using firefox.

    that’s my default browser on the pc so i don’t know what i’m gonna do – i don’t want to change browsers.

    moonpluto is having the same problem with firefox.

    try another browser and see if you can get on that way.
