Last night’s Vice-Presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin was widely viewed by American voters. Not since 1992 have so many Americans watched a debate in such high numbers.
Americans watched the debate in part for the bread-and-circuses appeal created by Big Media’s guffaws. Big Media coverage of Governor Palin led many Americans to expect Governor Palin to drop her glasses, break a shoe heel, snap her string of pearls – leading to Keystone Kops type comedy as she toppled the podium and dropped a pitcher of water on her head and say “Live from New York…”
Americans also watched to have one question answered: Who is Sarah Palin? Is Governor Palin the strong woman who they saw in Dayton, Ohio and at the Republican National Convention or was the real Governor Palin the Saturday Night Live caricature?
Governor Palin answered the question. It turns out Governor Sarah Palin is the Governor Palin Americans witnessed at the Republican National Convention who uses “betcha” and “doggonit” as an effective tool to demonstrate her connection to small town America.
Governor Palin proved neither she nor small town America are bitter and clingy. If Governor Palin was bitter it was towards Wall Street corruption. If Governor Palin was clingy it was towards her family, which took to the stage at the end, and wrote the epilog to the already answered question, “Who is Sarah Palin?”
* * *
Last night Governor Palin answered the questions Americans had about her.
Americans are still waiting for an answer to the question Who is Barack Obama?
Long past spending a quarter of a billion dollars selling himself these past 2 years, Barack Obama is still an unknown.
Who is Barack Obama? The answer to that question clearly will not be answered by Obama nor by Dimocrats. The question might be answered by Antoin “Tony” Rezko as his October 28 sentencing date approaches.
Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a convicted influence peddler who was once one of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s most trusted confidants, has met with federal prosecutors and is considering cooperating in the corruption probe of the governor’s administration, sources told the Tribune.[snip]
Rezko’s trial this year laid bare a culture of scams, bribes and backroom deals stretching from City Hall to the Statehouse. It even became fodder in the presidential campaign of Democratic nominee Barack Obama, whose fundraising and personal ties to Rezko go back more than a decade. [snip]
Rezko has made no deal in the wake of his June corruption conviction, sources familiar with the situation said, but has had preliminary talks with prosecutors before an October sentencing that could put him in prison for years. Still, there are indications Rezko has already provided investigators with information.
Four attorneys have told the Tribune in recent days that federal prosecutors have telephoned them and other attorneys either with news Rezko is talking, or armed with details only Rezko could know. The lawyers speculated prosecutors are using the preliminary talks with Rezko to shake loose more cooperation from other witnesses. [snip]
The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago declined to comment, as did Rezko’s attorney William Ziegelmueller. [snip]
Two months before his conviction on fraud charges, Rezko typed a letter to his trial judge accusing “overzealous” prosecutors of pressuring him to talk about wrongdoing involving Obama or Blagojevich. Rezko said there was none to talk about.
“They are pressuring me to tell them the ‘wrong’ things that I supposedly know about Governor Blagojevich and Senator Obama,” Rezko wrote U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve in an April bid to be released on bail during his trial.
On June 30, 2008 we wrote Let’s Help Barack Obama’s Slumlord Friend REZKO, Part I. We followed up that masterpiece with Let’s Help Barack Obama’s Slumlord Friend REZKO, Part II.
We asked the question What does Tony Rezko know and when will he say it? We provided some sane advice for Rezko’s family to transmit to the incarcerated Rezko. We suggested the main message to convey to Rezko was:
Obama simply cannot be trusted. Obama cannot be trusted on any issue. Obama cannot be trusted by his friends. Obama cannot be trusted by his enemies. Obama cannot be trusted.
We suggested in Parts I and II of our humble attempts to assist jailbird Rezko that perhaps, just perhaps, his attorneys (particularly Obama fan Joe Duffy) were more interested, as exhibited by their weak trial defense, in protecting Obama than in defending – friendless as soon as he is penniless – Rezko.
We noted in our stupdendous analysis regarding the Rezko letter that Joe Duffy – Rezko’s lawyer – is basically calling poor Tony a LIAR. That is strange behavior. The lawyer is calling his client a liar in a major newspaper. It’s almost as if Joe Duffy is more interested in protecting Obama and Blagojevich than his own client. Weeks ago, as Rezko was spotted at the Federal Courthouse triggering speculation that he was cooperating with prosecutors, Joe Duffy expressed skepticism that Rezko was going to the Federal Courthouse. Maybe Rezko is leaving Duffy out of the loop.
We documented, with barely held back tears, how Rezko was under “tremendous pressure” from his legal team “to pay their fees.” We wept as we recounted how Rezko took a loan of 3.5 million dollars, with the advice and consent of his attorneys, in order to pay those same attorneys. The loan backfired when it turned out the transaction violated court orders and poor Rezko was sent to the slammer.
We then provided the most valuable advice to Rezko in Part II. After remorsefully noting that Rezko is now a convicted felon as he approaches more legal and personal trials we cited the ugly fact that Rezko faces a daunting 300 years in prison. What to do? What to do?
We took inventory for Rezko.
We sadly informed that with a 300 year imprisonment facing him and now a convicted felon rapidly losing whatever friends he ever had as his money disappeared in legal fees Rezko needs one darn good “Get out of Jail Free” card. While flipping on Governor Blagojevich might remove a century or more of prison time that would still leave two more centuries in the vault.
Why would the price for flipping on a sitting Governor get such a miserly reduction of sentence? We suggested that the case against Governor Blagojevich is sufficiently strong without Rezko’s testimony. Without getting too deep into the allegations let us just say that Ali Ata’s testimony against the Governor might be sufficient to result in a conviction.
Last week the news for Rezko became even more dire. Governor Blagojevich might not have to wait for the legal system to act in order to lose his Illinois job.
After what has happened in the last few days, it’s more likely that Gov. Rod Blagojevich will be indicted or impeached or both. [snip]
The Illinois appellate court on Friday issued a ruling that could provide reason for the legislature to remove Blagojevich. He decided to spend tens of millions of dollars to expand a state health care insurance program even though the legislature wouldn’t approve it. The court told Blagojevich to stop the program—and said his administration can’t even identify how many people have enrolled in it. [snip]
But Blagojevich’s attempt to go around lawmakers and spend money they didn’t approve for a vast health care program may be just as insidious as his pay-to-play politics. His effort to expand health care through the program known as FamilyCare was soundly rejected by the Illinois legislature. But he did it anyway, spending millions of dollars to broaden eligibility for state-funded health care to people with higher family incomes.
The Illinois secretary of state said the governor had no authority to do that. A legislative rule-making body said he had no authority to do that. But he did it anyway.
In January, Obama political god-father and Blagojevich protector Senate President Emil Jones will retire. The Governor appears vulnerable enough without Rezko that Federal prosecutors will devalue Rezko’s testimony.
We calculated, Rezko’s biggest “Get out of Jail Free” card is flipping on Obama. Rezko has answers on the straw donors that kicked funds to Obama campaigns and of course there is that interesting matter of Obama’s house.
In December 2007, the Hillary Clinton campaign unveiled The Hillary I Know website. The website was crammed with videos of Hillary family and friends of many decades. We wrote about the Hillary I Know website that it documented Hillary’s real life, not composite characters in an autobiography, can be traced through a lifetime of friends and work.
Of Obama little is known and what is known is concocted by Obama himself. No friends from the past come forth with testimonials. The grandmother is rarely seen, never heard. Only the most self-interested employees or “friends” of recent vintage are heard from. Little wonder – the long-time Obama friends we have seen are of the Jeremiah Wright variety – not exactly the best character witnesses you want to bring before the electoral jury.
Last night Sarah Palin answered the question “Who is Sarah Palin?”
After more than a quarter billion dollars spent Obama has still not answered the question “Who is Barack Obama?”
“Who is Barack Obama?” The answer might have to come from long-time friend Tony Rezko. The answer won’t be pretty.
