Can John McCain carry California? Consult a new poll later today

John McCain has been offering springtime promises that a Republican presidential ticket headed by him can make California — and its huge cache of 55 electoral votes — competitive in November.

Such pledges by previous GOP standard-bearers have proved patently false in recent elections. But might McCain — with his maverick persona, Western roots and potential appeal to Latinos — be the exception to the rule?

A new L.A. Times/KTLA poll tested the proposition in McCain matchups with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. And in at least one of the scenarios, the results may surprise many folks.

We aren’t at liberty to reveal the exact results yet; for that, check out our homepage (latimes.com) about 5 p.m. EDT today (2 p.m. PDT).

Some perspective…

The last Republican to win the state in a White House race was George H.W. Bush in 1988; he defeated Michael Dukakis, 51%-48%.

Bill Clinton won it in 1992 with 46%; Bush got 33% and Ross Perot 21%. Clinton triumphed handily again in 1996, with 51% of the vote to Bob Dole’s 38%.

In 2000, Al Gore beat George W. Bush, 53%-42%. And four years ago, John Kerry kept the state securely in the Democratic column, getting 54% of the vote to Bush’s 44%.

The odds, clearly, should be against McCain.

I have just received in the mail (snail mail) a full DNC survey, complete with a statement from Hillary talking about unity, …

It says that I have been chosen to represent my area, blah, blah. It says the material is time sensitive, and it asks my opinion about strategy questions, etc.

I know about the FEC gambit with me and my site. I know about the Rezko-linked Chicago law firms scoping out my site. Same with the Boston Brahmans. I know what you guys are up to, and the longer you keep this up, the better the chance that I’m going to nail you when you slip.

So, please, keep going.

This isn’t a game to us, the majority of the party who supports Hillary. We are terrified of having Barack anywhere near the White House and the national security apparatus. We don’t want Michelle — a fervent anti-American — as First Lady. We don’t want the USA as part of Zbigniew’s Trilateral Commission, One World Government umbrella.

Zbigniew, we are not all as dumb as your daughter. Some of us caught onto the game and who’s running the show a long time ago. You are not fooling anybody, and we will work until the day Barack is defeated to make sure the message gets out to the electorate. And that includes with the GOP, as necessary.

Howard: You and the rest of the DNC better correct this thing before it wrecks irrevocably and not only is the party destroyed, but any thoughts you had of being able to reshape things after your own doomed run are ruined because you’re out of the power structure.

The fundamental mistake you Bambians are making is in thinking that we, your opposition, things like and is motivated in the same way you are. That is why you came and hoped to bust me on an FEC violation, because having people on the payroll is something you are used to doing. So you think everyone else is doing it, too.

Howard, you are the true disappointment here. We know Ziggy, Deval Daddy and Bambi are self-interested, but what is your excuse? How the F*CK could you let the party do what it’s doing to both the Clintons and to the registered Dem voters you and GodBrazila are looking to over-rule?

That is why you, Brazile, Kerry, Biden, Richardson, Edwards, etc. are losers, and the Clintons are winners. You never turn your back on a winner, particularly when the alternate choice is a guy who is the presumptive nominee getting his ass kicked by 40 and 35 points in states his cultists are doing more damage in by calling them ‘racists.’

If my party and the DNC chooses to screw over FL & MI, out-rule the popular vote to make Bambi “Bush 2000 II,” and out-rule the will of a majority of registered Dem votes, then you are no longer representing me. You have declared war on myself and my fellow Dems in order to appease the ‘Iran’ of AA’s and Clinton-hating elites.

And I will respond accordingly.

As will the millions and millions of other REAL Dems who feel the same way.
